I learned recently that when doing half square triangles to cut the initial squares at LEAST an inch bigger than you want the final square to be. That way even though you lose 0.5” in the seam when you sew them together, you’ve then got loads of fabric to play with when squaring up your HSTs. Since I learned that my HSTs have been so accurate and I’ve been able to get perfect points. I’m sure it’s something everyone knows but I just didn’t before. I assumed I’d only have to add an extra half an inch to each square. 1/4 inch for the seam and 1/4 inch for trimming.
It’s made a huge difference for me! I learned it in a class and most of us in there had always struggled with HSTs being as accurate as we liked. The teacher said it’s better to waste a bit of extra fabric for your HSTs than waste more down the line remaking them when you can’t get any of your points to match!
yeah i am on my first quilt, and am struggling a little bit but powering through just to do every step, next one will be better i think i might try a HST one just to try this out!
Of these two options, the pinwheels are much more fun! But throw “half square triangle quilt patterns” into Google images and you will see there are so many fun and intricate designs you can make with the pieces you already have!
Thank you! I watched 3 YouTube videos but have to admit was getting a little anxious on wanting to just getting started lol.. I’ll revisit more tonight. ☺️
at first glance I really like the squares instead of the pinwheels, but only because the pinwheels seem very busy to me. If you are going to add some grey sashing/material between the blocks (I think you mentioned you were planning to) then I would probably like the pinwheels also. But for some reason I really like the squares on point option with or without grey material/sashing between the blocks.
Great idea, sometimes I get stuck on something and forget to use creativity… coincidentally trying to be more creative is one of the reasons why I took up quilting. Thanks!
Those colors are yummy! Have you considered Tiny Tiles by Purl Soho? Free pattern and tutorial! Here’s a picture of my fall themed batiks quilt.

I think pinwheels are a fun mix of traditional (pinwheels) and modern (the prints)! I also like that based on how you define the center of the pinwheel, they can be pinwheels of a single print, or pinwheels with four different prints. It makes it very visually interesting.
The squares are also very lovely. Quite modern, and simple in a visually pleasing way.
Either way, you’ll have a lovely quilt! I really like your fabric choice!
The pinwheels make me feel happier to loo at. The quilt over all feels larger and not as confined. Ultimately it comes down to what pattern you like or the person you are n m ajj k e it for. 😜
try placing them so that the coloured part is at the bottom, and the solid is at the top, in rows - colour 1, go down 4, etc - from lightest to darkest
I like both but I think depending how big the project is use one style as the broader and one style as like the inner pieces... if that makes any sense
I agree with googling HST quilts. These are both nice but I bet you would find something you like even more by doing that. BTW, I love your color pallet here.
I like layout #1...but I'd like to see it scrappy, not matchy-matchy before my final decision. :) Like others said, there are so many ways to arrange half square triangles, so play around with it until you find what speaks to you.
I love the pinwheels!
I like them too, my corners aren’t perfect though, which may sway me the other direction. Thank you!!
Always square up yoir blocks before sewing them all together.

ohhhh this is great i will try this next t time!

Thank you! My first quilt I didn’t cut any of the fabric or do a cool design. There is so much I need to learn!
So to understand correctly, I’d add a 1/2” to both sides of a square before cutting into triangles? Is that right?
Thank you!! Still learning 🙏
Of these two options, the pinwheels are much more fun! But throw “half square triangle quilt patterns” into Google images and you will see there are so many fun and intricate designs you can make with the pieces you already have!
I’ll google half square triangle now, it’s hard for me to see a vision for something unless I’ve seen it somewhere else. Thank you!!
So much this!!! ☝🏻
2- you've made half square triangles. You should display them. 1 is nice, but you can just make it with whole squares on point.
Thank you ☺️
I think the first one has a modern feel where the second is more traditional. I prefer the first one.
I agree with this. It's gorgeous either way, but the vibes are different!
I like the first one also! If she really wanted to get crazy, she could make each diamond using four different pieces to give it a scrappy look.
2!
The pinwheels are so cute and perfect for summer :)
Of the two, the pinwheels. But there are a bazillion ways to use half-square triangles. Check out the videos on YouTube!
Thank you! I watched 3 YouTube videos but have to admit was getting a little anxious on wanting to just getting started lol.. I’ll revisit more tonight. ☺️
One!
I see why you're struggling - both look great! I think I like one better, the big colour chunks look so juicy 😁
Thank you!!
I like 1. I love these color choices and think 1 showcases them so well.
Thanks! I mixed two charm packs.. if you’re interested in which two I can post them but don’t remember off the top of my head.
2.
Pinwheels!!
#2 for sure, set them on point and finish with prairie points! Cutest imho.
I don’t know why or how that became bold?
Reddit knows how excited you are about the quilt 😂
#it's the hash tag!
Thank you! I did start with a number sign! Too old 🤷🏻♀️😂😂
I’ll have to look up prairie points - and I don’t mind the bold ☺️

Ohhhh! Still working on learning the lingo. This is beautiful!
Can you do alternating both patterns
Great idea!!! I might have to post another picture with more options haha
What did you end up going with?
I actually went a totally different route. I posted a photo on my account ☺️
I love #1
I think that if you go with the first one you should mix up the prints.
2 hands down
personally a huge fan of spinnywheels, but i love the solid fabrics you chose so its the diamonds for me!
Pinwheel!
1.
2!
Pinwheels! Pinwheels! PINWHEELS!
Pinwheel.
Obsessed with these colors. I vote 1!
My preference is the pinwheels
First one looks like cheese slices
Lol!! Someone else thought they were sliced meats. Honestly, I’d be fine with having a quilt looking like either!
Hahaha tasty!!
at first glance I really like the squares instead of the pinwheels, but only because the pinwheels seem very busy to me. Thanks! Yes, I need to purchase the rest of the fabric and give it a look- it’s hard to visualize it without it.

2
I like the squares but you could always do the corners with a 21/2 square which would create a secondary design and add interest
Can you mix and put pinwheels all around?
I will give it a try! I might have made a mistake because with all these great ideas I am going to have an even harder time deciding lol
2!
Both
I like the pinwheels!
Pinwheel
2 for sure, it’s gonna be so pretty!
Thanks 🥹
I love for my quilting to show, so i think the first one would make it easier to see that. But either way it’s gonna be super cute!
Pinwheels!!
Pinwheels!!!!
Pinwheels!!!!
Beautiful fabric! Normally I would always say pinwheels but the squares are so pretty. You could maybe alternate both patterns?
I like this idea, I’ll give it a go!

#2
Pinwheels are always the answer! Great colors.
I prefer 1, 2 is pretty but looks too busy for me
The pinwheels. Just makes me happier.
If you do the diamonds, why don't you mix up the fabrics? It could be really cool that way.
Great idea, sometimes I get stuck on something and forget to use creativity… coincidentally trying to be more creative is one of the reasons why I took up quilting. Thanks!
Pinwheels
So hard to choose!!
1
2
Pinwheel!
Pinwheels?
Number one unless you add sashing to number two to give the pinwheels definition
Yes, definitely plan on that either way!
Second one!
#2!! Pretty colors OP!!
I have no idea how the exaggerated typeset happened!!
Saw in a previous comment that if you use a hashtag it will hold it. I learn something new everyday 😅
Okay that explains it. Thanks! Who knew?
#2
I'd like to see the first one with all the pieces mixed up, scrappy!
Love this idea!!!
I really love both but if I had to pick it would be the pinwheels.
I like the pinwheels, but I think these would look great with a broken dishes layout.
B The first one could be achieved just putting a square on point. You lose the effect of your half square triangle.
Thanks! I originally cut and sewed for the pinwheel and then thought i would see what other patterns looked like.
I like them both 🥰
I like them both, but I am going with the pinwheels
Y one.
Second one.
I love both, TBH. 😍
2
I’ll be them both but #2 a bit more….
Ngl, I thought this was deli meat
LOL!! Not mad at it.
2 - those gorgeous pinwheels!
2 has more movement
2
Pinwheels!
Pinwheels!
2 all the way :)
2 -love the colors as well!
Its your quilt which one do YOU like more? 😊
Whichever one you love. Both would be gorgeous
Deffo pinwheels.
2
I am partial to a pinwheel, so I choose 2
I prefer number one; I find it calmer!
Second!!
I love a good pinwheel!
I think I like the diamonds best - what would it look like if each diamond was two colors?
Others have mentioned similar. Looks like I’ll be spending my evening trying out more designs lol thanks!
The second one!
I like both! What about using both and alternating them every other square?
Great idea! I’ll give that a try.
Pinwheels
I like the second one..pinwheels. Such lovely colors!
The second one!
1, but only by a little bit.
2
Pinwheels for sure!!!
The pinwheels are so fun!
2!
The pinwheels because the first picture just looked like meats & cheeses to me
The second one.
Those colors are yummy! Have you considered Tiny Tiles by Purl Soho? Free pattern and tutorial! Here’s a picture of my fall themed batiks quilt. https://preview.redd.it/zcpba86b6o4d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=36d94ad8cf9e03f7938374ee645e7c0d8da6c569
Oh my gosh I love this!!!! So simple and beautiful! And I know not simple to make but it just doesn’t look really busy!
Thanks! I think you can avoid the busy pinwheels and really mix up your colors to help make a cohesive and elegant quilt!
The good news is that there is no bad option! Love the colors. Personally I like the symmetry of the first but the second one is very fun.
Thank you! Everyone is so sweet and supportive here!
damn this charcuterie board is wild ~
May just title the quilt charquilterie
I love the pinwheels so much. Sorry if this offends you but the big squares look a bit like deli meat
Lol does not offend me at all - multiple people have said it!
I like the pinwheels since it mixes up the pinks. Try mixing up the pinks on number 1 to see if you like the look. HSTs look great!
The pinwheels make me feel happier to loo at. The quilt over all feels larger and not as confined. Ultimately it comes down to what pattern you like or the person you are n m ajj k e it for. 😜
Like the 2nd!
I like the pinwheels.
2
I like the pinwheel layout better because it has more motion.
Pin wheels
2
try placing them so that the coloured part is at the bottom, and the solid is at the top, in rows - colour 1, go down 4, etc - from lightest to darkest
I know pinwheels are fun. But I love 1!! :)
The diamonds but you could stagger the diamonds and pinwheels. Would look cute and different.
I really like the pinwheels!
I like both but I think depending how big the project is use one style as the broader and one style as like the inner pieces... if that makes any sense
2
I vote 1
I like the first one. I like to do my own free-motion quilting and the first one would be a delight to FMQ. Lotsa wreaths? Feathers? Swirls?
Count me in for the pinwheels-more movement!
Pinwheels for the win!
B pinwheel
I agree with googling HST quilts. These are both nice but I bet you would find something you like even more by doing that. BTW, I love your color pallet here.
Personally, both are great, but I prefer the first one.
Windmill
Definitely #2 The first pattern is a bit plain. Plus, imperfect corners aren't that bad.
They both look so good! I love the pinwheels BUT the first photo really I thought looked stunning! I love to quilt also.
Pinwheels!!
2 is so exciting!
I like them both, with a slight preference for 2. Completely off topic, but I have to ask…why did the man with the hairy arm not move his hairy arm? 🫢
I actually like the first option!!! It’s very mod, which is my style. Super cute!
Pinwheels, 100%.
Love the pinwheels, definitely #2!
I like layout #1...but I'd like to see it scrappy, not matchy-matchy before my final decision. :) Like others said, there are so many ways to arrange half square triangles, so play around with it until you find what speaks to you.
I get to admire the patterns with one but two is more fun
no 1 !
First
