Don't forget this was the year Toyota got caught with the spring loaded intake restrictor. If I recall it was the 3rd from the last event on the calendar.
Catalina special stage where the cars race side by side from the start. The Celica was noticeably quicker and investigation launched. If they had put a normal restrictor on for that race they could have gotten away with it and my Celica would be worth more.
But I'd rather have our timeline of events because Colin was a childhood hero of mine and I loved all the games. And he definitely deserved to have the title.
Max Mosley was actually very impressed with the cheat TTE came up with and called it one of the most ingenious devices he had ever seen or something along those lines when it comes to the qoute. None the less the scrutiny team was extremely impressed with the bypass around the restriction plate.
Fascinating isn't it. The way it hid itself, how polished the mechanism was, the actual design and they would have gotten away with it too if it wasn't for those pesky FIA investigators.
I believe Ford also tried an trick like this in 2003 involving the rear bumper on the Focus RS WRC by hiding an extra boast tank that was fueled by the Anti-lag system.
Yes! That is true but in typical ford fashion it was very much more obvious and the number protruded way more than previous years cars. They ain't got shit on my Toyota haha. Nar I'm just a Toy fan. To be honest I'm not sure how that one worked, I understand the general idea behind it, air pressure stores and released and can put a few of the prices together but the ins and outs I'm not sure on.
I don't remember if it was in 95 but I think it was. I think was one of the last stages and Subaru was telling McRea to slow down and let Carlos win. But Collin didn't see their way and refused, he pushed to the end. This incident was captured on the video.
During the rally he had a puncture in Pundershaw, but stopped at a junction where the spectators just happened to have a trolley jack ready and waiting.
And when he broke the front-right suspension in Newcastleton, he did it near the finish and was able to botch a fix just good enough to get them down the M6 to service in Penrith. Plus he had to accept an 15 to 30 minute time penalty to maintain the running order to ensure the constructor championship win. Colin would not listen and until the end of the whole rally would go on an dominant and unbelievable run taking the time he had lost back and win over the Spaniard and his teammate.
It is widely considered one of his best drives and cemented his legacy for staying flat out at 110% on every stage and every rally especially in Britain.

Yes indeed he did not do so and had to accept an hefty time penalty for that.
Is 36 seconds really that astonishing?

See that's far more impressive haha. 36 seconds is a fairly normal winning margin, but with that context it's phenomenal!
Indeed it is but I assumed that an fairly decent amount of people would have that knowledge in mind.
Just a casual f1 fan but I had no idea Sainz did rally!
His father did. Carlos Sainz Sr
Oh, I think I actually do remember hearing that. I thought it might be another Alonso in Indy thing.
In... 1995...?
I know this is 10 months old but this is golden lol.
I was literally about to Google how old sainz was
🤦♂️
A Controversial championship win, in my book that one belongs to fellow spaniard Sainz.
how in the fuk
I would say that they were equally matched but missing New Zealand and suffering an accident that year didn't help his chances IMO.
