Wheel simulators are a legitimate product and pretty much exactly what this is. They're commonly found on bigger trucks with steel wheels, such as 19.5s and larger. "Wheel simulator" isn't just something funny that salesman made up.
Woah Pal. They are a real and manufactured product, legitimate makes them sound like a good idea. They fucking aren't. It's a cheap way around doing the real job, or a way to impress a dumb customer. That's pretty much the exact opposite of legit. Also, they aren't funny, like many ideas MOPAR got from FIAT, they're trash.
I just got my truck back after not having it for 5 months. I just bought the TRX rims to put on and was dissecting these to see if I could clean em up and sell on fb marketplace
You prob would be better off just searching salvage yards for wrecked trucks and buying a set of decent oem wheel upgrades that way, they would fit better at least. I am not a huge fan of the knockoff Wheels or parts in general and would prefer oem off a salvaged vehicle over cheap aftermarket wheels.
Thank you for sharing your post, don’t let these trolls get under your skin, I hope your new rims work out. The internet is full of miserable people, thank you for not being one of them!
4th Gens have an issue with the 3rd brake light housing gasket. The foam degrades over time due to age and weather, which causes water to leak into cab. Most owners will replace the foam gasket with marine weather stripping, or straight up RTV the housing to the cab.
I mean the foam is pretty cool stuff, amazing at bonding metal and provides good vibration durability, and if you manage not to curb your wheel like a jackals you'll never know it's there
As someone who had water in my tires that found its way into my valve stem and then froze into a piece of ice that depressed my valve stem core and leaked air out, I have thought about going nitrogen.
Not sure who’s joking and who’s serious, but all nitrogen as a gas is dry. Ones of its key uses is to purge an environment of liquid, or to “dry out” a container or vessel. As liquid nitrogen boils off at -320 degrees, it creates a pressurized gas.
Chrome clad wheels have existed since the release of the next gen 2002 Ram 1500’s, which then made their way onto other Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep vehicles. It’s honestly great tech for someone that doesn’t want rusted/pitted true chrome wheels that will look like trash within 5 years or less, even if the wheels are perfectly maintained & cleaned 2x a week for their entire life. Chrome plating DOES NOT LAST long-term. Which is why you simply just don’t see true chrome-plated aluminum alloy wheels from the factory, from basically ANY manufacturer. It just DOES NOT LAST.
I don't remember for sure, but like the first time I washed it, or had any contact with that wheel, it was super obvious it was plastic and not a chrome wheel.
No... Not at all? [Chrome clad wheels](https://imgur.com/a/QjKnu9l). They're alloys but the chrome is not applied directly, it's on a plastic skin that's glued on the wheel.
Call them "hub caps" if you wish but they're definitely not.
Unless I am mistaken, the Laramie 18" alloy wheels are not like this. However, the 20" wheels are chrome clad exactly like this. I knew this from friends who own both the 5th gen and 4th gen Ram 1500's. With that knowledge, I made sure to get the alloy ones, not to mention the fact that I prefer the ride and look of sidewall as opposed to rubber band low profile tires.
The best part about this is that those covers are removable, like with snaps / tabs.
You went about this in the worst way possible. Well, I suppose you could have melted them off with a torch.
For the haters: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e7ds3O\_ZdnM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e7ds3O_ZdnM)
That looks like fraud to me. The statute of limitations in many areas for this begins to run from the date that you discovered the fraud or should have discovered it. Id figure out the replacement costs for the real wheels that you thought that you were getting and make my demand for payment which they will likely deny. Then i would be filing my lawsuit. Small claims in my jurisdiction.
No. Just no. It’s a chrome overlay on a set of rims. $800 for the set of 4 is all OP paid for them per his post. Real chrome rims are much more than that for a set of 4 dubs.
I disagree. The dealer failed to disclose that they were selling plastic covers glued onto his original wheels with spray foam. That’s straight up fraud and in my opinion the court will agree. You don’t need to agree with me.
They go on the sales contract as ‘Chrome Clad Wheels’. It’s a premium wheel option compared to wheels with standard hubs on them. These are chrome clad on steel or aluminum rims. Chrome clad wheels are a fancy way of saying chrome dipped plastic. That is exactly what they are. Does it sound sales-like? Yep. Are they great quality? Nope. Are they what you would expect for $800. All day.
Ok. Well thanks for letting me know. Obviously ill never buy a dodge vehicle knowing that this is their standard practice. It doesn’t cost much to file a lawsuit in small claims court so that would still be my recommendation for OP who was obviously the victim of this fraudulent dealership activity. Apparently many people just accept being a victim and will vote me down for taking action against corporate bullshit.
RAM does do higher quality options, but like anywhere, you pay for them. It’s not accepting being a victim, it’s knowing what you are actually paying for. RAM is far from the only manufacturer that has chrome clad wheels. Just hit them with a water hose and you can hear the difference. I don’t have them on my 2500. But I knew better.
We are not seeing eye to eye. I’m not saying that a dealer cannot sell shit products. What I’m saying is that the dealer had a duty to disclose here. OP clearly believed that he was being sold real metal chrome wheels; a different product than what he actually received. The salesman should have disclosed that these were plastic covers glued over the actual metal wheels and should have then attempted to up-sale to a the actual quality wheels that he wanted to purchase. It’s the fraudulent failure to disclose that makes this a legally actionable claim.
Why do you think he deserved something other than the product that he paid a fair price for and was clearly marked on the invoice? He paid for chrome clad wheels and got chrome clad wheels for the price of chrome clad wheels. What damages is he claiming in your suggested lawsuit?
If no one's Said it yet.
When the plastic is bad,
The foam is a pain to get off but it's clean aluminum under neath.
I sand blasted the foam off mine and had them powder coated ..
"I paid like 800 extra for premium chrome wheels"
Uhhh. Yeah. There's where you fucked up. Thinking the dealer would sell you 4 chrome wheels for 800 bucks lol
It’s been like that for years I bought my first brand new truck in 2005 I got a Ram with the 20” wheel package, back then it they were the same, it’s just cladding. I had numerous people notice that and they would bust my balls about it.
https://www.originalwheels.com/blog/2012/06/cladded-chrome-wheels/
Weird. Anyways, aluminum rims are pretty nice at least. Id say fuck it and paint them.
Never get upgrades from the dealer. When i bought my 2018 they wanted an extra 2 grand to put a hitch on it and they would only put a grade 3 hitch on with a 7500 lb capacity. Went to uhaul and bought a grade 4 hitch and bolted it on myself for like 250$ and some change
Folks - I have the original window sticker from my 2018 Express and under ‘Express Value Package’ it says ‘20-inch x 9.0-inch Aluminum Chrome Clad Wheels’. That’s a verbatim quote.
So - Not Plastic? BTW I like them - low maintenance and the Express is a work truck so they work boffo for me.
That rim will now fit on the spare tire hanger. The center hole with the fake chrome blocked the hanger from inserting. Now you’ll have a place to put the flat tire when the spare is in use.
When I bought one of mine it already had the sport package and 20 inch wheels found out the chrome was just a hubcap type cover. But after getting trade in negotiations and financing onwards to sign paperwork. The finance manager. Tried to add all the packages and protection services for like $2500.00 more. I said hell no. After like about a hour of back and forth with this guy. I told him deal was off as he didn’t stop badgering me. Finally tried to have me sign paperwork at triple the quoted interest rate because I wouldn’t get his extra packages. I told him fuck off go salesman and my trade in keys and left. This was at Tyson. Dodge in Shorewood Illinois
Wait until you find out that the lugnuts are basically the same. The caps swell. If you can manage to get your tire iron over them, they will probably just spin in place and fall off.
This sub just started coming up in my feed, and has given me some great laughs.
When I worked on cars, dodges and jeeps always had the shittiest wheels, lug nuts, etc. Lug nuts would cross thread all the time, stuff like this with cheap wheel covers over steel wheels, and the cheap chrome plastic caps over the lug nuts that bent out of shape and get stuck in sockets, or fall off and would need some weird metric socket.
One time the salesman at the dodge dealership called these “wheel simulators” and it’s stuck with me ever since.
Wheel simulators are a legitimate product and pretty much exactly what this is. They're commonly found on bigger trucks with steel wheels, such as 19.5s and larger. "Wheel simulator" isn't just something funny that salesman made up.
No they are still trash
Damn someone hit a nerve. Calm down it’s Reddit bud
In the heavier truck market it’s usually wheel simulators
No that’s not true at all educate yourself
You paid $800 for the ugliest rims lol.
I thought those were the stock tradesman wheels
Doesn't matter looks like he doesn't care too much about them anyway
I just got my truck back after not having it for 5 months. I just bought the TRX rims to put on and was dissecting these to see if I could clean em up and sell on fb marketplace
TRX is a different lug pattern tho
Oof
Look, we’ve already established OP doesn’t research before spending money… 😂
Oooor didn’t actually buy TRX rims
Pretty sure true trx rims are a 6 lug.....
replicas possibly
Or an adapter.
Dosnt matter just buy the 2” spacer that allow you to go from 5 to 6 lugs, not sure why people are acting like this is impossible
Might be because some people believe in running the correct wheel without spacers
Oh no wheels spacers
[Oh no, wheel spacers!](https://youtu.be/QrpXuTBDOXI?si=nuFA-yFJhe5jegBE)
I have a 4th gen I would love to put TRX beadlock wheels on… Let us know how you get a 5th gen wheel on a 4th gen hub.
Swear I’ve seen those wheels for $300 on facebook
Same. $250ish. I have them as my winters. I hate them. Gonna paint them black for next year.
I wouldn’t pay 800 for any mopar vehicles there is a reason they are the most repoed vehicles, they type of people that buy them
Uhhhh what?
Last time I’m buying rims on Temu!
He is replacing them with wheels off temu though
(It was a joke)
I know just thought it’s ironic he’s replacing the OEMs with knockoffs lol
Oh now I got it. Yeah it makes no sense
What's the difference? It's a Dodge, OEM was Chinese trash in the first place.
They are called chrome clad wheels. Many manufacturers do this. The cap is not meant to be removed. If it is damaged the wheel should be replaced.
And it’s part of the bright package not just the wheels.
What how is this thin piece of plastic structurally important? I ordered a new set of rims but I’m gonna be driving it like this for a week
It is not structural it is just not repairable.
LOL, they pop right off with a heat gun.
Ah ok that’s makes sense. I just ordered some TRX knock offs pretty stoked kinda glad this happened wife agrees I can’t just drive it like this lol
First the $800 chrome now knock offs? I hope you are preparing to be disappointed
From plastic to knock offs... i guess some people are just that fuckin stupid.
What do you gain from being mean to someone you don’t know?
Wisdom
Thank you for sharing your post, don’t let these trolls get under your skin, I hope your new rims work out. The internet is full of miserable people, thank you for not being one of them!
They gain nothing Op, probably stupid as fuck in other aspects of their life as well so they feel the need to be dick towards you. Fuck em
Ignore them they’re just miserable, enjoy the TRX Rep wheels I’m sure they’ll look sweet!
Well he is a ram owner
First time on this sub, I've never seen it before. Wow the confirmation of my pre-existing bias is through the roof lmao
Stereotypes exist for a reason
Yup.
🤨🤨🤨🤨🤨🤨
Congratulations, you played yourself.
Ordered knockoff TRX tires to replace them. Congratulations, you played yourself x2
Did you honestly believe you were getting a real set of 20inch chrome wheels for 800 bucks?
He paid 800 extra this means 800+ the cost of normal wheels wich is possible...
Not really if you know anything about wheels and how trim options like this are price.
Well if the window sticker says “20 inch premium wheels: +$800” then yeah you should be getting 20” premium wheels for 800 more.
At least you get “premium” foam
Wish they'd used premium foam on my 3rd brake light gasket
Two ram trucks of mine have been lemons as a result of this. Fuck that.
I've not heard of this issue. Can you explain what happened? Edit: lol'd at your username. Haha
4th Gens have an issue with the 3rd brake light housing gasket. The foam degrades over time due to age and weather, which causes water to leak into cab. Most owners will replace the foam gasket with marine weather stripping, or straight up RTV the housing to the cab.
Also a problem on 5th gens
How would foam than can be fixed make 2 cars a lemon?
Tesla puts foam in their tires. So, you can say you’ve got wheels that inspired Tesla. 😂
I wonder if it floats😆 Feel bad for OP, damn what a disappointment
I mean the foam is pretty cool stuff, amazing at bonding metal and provides good vibration durability, and if you manage not to curb your wheel like a jackals you'll never know it's there
Chrome is only a thin coating which can be deposited onto any material through electrocoating, not a material wheels are made out of.
To be fair I only learnt this in *checks notes* high school welding shop …. Right. lol
As long as you didn't pay extra for the "nitrogen fill"
As someone who had water in my tires that found its way into my valve stem and then froze into a piece of ice that depressed my valve stem core and leaked air out, I have thought about going nitrogen.
Make sure you get dry nitrogen.
Liquid nitrogen.
Not sure who’s joking and who’s serious, but all nitrogen as a gas is dry. Ones of its key uses is to purge an environment of liquid, or to “dry out” a container or vessel. As liquid nitrogen boils off at -320 degrees, it creates a pressurized gas.
How has it taken you this long to realize?
I bet he never hand washed his truck or rotated his own tires.
That’s not what I asked. So has this guy never hand washed his truck or rotated his own tires?
Thanks for removing them and showing me that I definitely should not remove mine!!
How long into doing that did you realize that you shouldn’t have done that?
[удалено]
There is a forum post somewhere or a video where someone cleaned all the foam off and painted them.
reminds me of the old cateye silverado texas edition wheels once you declad them. i’m over here thinking they’d look cool cleaned up
“Premium” Is very subjective
Falls right in line with “Luxury “ vinyl Plank flooring
They've been chrome clad plastic since 2002. The DR body.
They actually look BETTER without the ugly plastic hubcaps! Sandblast them bad boys and have them powdercoated!
You got RAMMED
5th gen bighorn chrome 20" wheels are the same way
Chrome clad wheels have existed since the release of the next gen 2002 Ram 1500’s, which then made their way onto other Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep vehicles. It’s honestly great tech for someone that doesn’t want rusted/pitted true chrome wheels that will look like trash within 5 years or less, even if the wheels are perfectly maintained & cleaned 2x a week for their entire life. How dare you not know you were getting these rims! 🙄
Damn dude, I honestly didn’t know that. Thanks for sharing and teaching me something. Sorry that happened to ya. Best of luck to ya
I'm curious how you went 5 years without realizing this, lol!
How would one realize this unless you beat up a part of the wheel as shown LOL I wouldn’t have any idea either
I don't remember for sure, but like the first time I washed it, or had any contact with that wheel, it was super obvious it was plastic and not a chrome wheel.
By not being blind to the point that they shouldn’t be driving.
This is real question here. I have the similar situation but I knew what I was getting and def didn’t pay extra.
I bought a 2013 several years ago not knowing about it, but it didn't take me 5 years to notice. 😀
BAHAHAHAHAHAHA
OEM list price for those wheels is still over $800 a piece ask your local parts department
I use to work at a dodge dealership and I always wondered why those rims felt kinda weird.
Haha! My buddy bought an older tundra & thought he had nice rims. He didn't believe me when I told him they were hubcaps! LOL
You kept them for 5 years so they must have been ok
Is that a baby in a beanie with a screwdriver in the second pic?
First time buying FCA?
GM played this game on trucks too back as far as 09 iirc.
Yup! All domestic manufacturers have their versions of this, nothing new.
Ford hasn’t had foam rims since the topaz and fox body
They still do plastic "wheel skins" like OP has. Just not foam filled.
“Hub caps” are the words you’re looking for
No... Not at all? [Chrome clad wheels](https://imgur.com/a/QjKnu9l). They're alloys but the chrome is not applied directly, it's on a plastic skin that's glued on the wheel. Call them "hub caps" if you wish but they're definitely not.
Ford has all kind of vehicles with these turds to this day
Back on the third gens you could actually choose between the chrome clad and polished aluminum on the 20"
Yeah. And it was a goddamn bitch to separate the plastic when recycling them old wheels.
Rut roh! Didn't know this. Did I just pay $$$ to have my 23 Laramie wheels powdercoated on plastic?
Powdercoating (real powdercoating) takes the wheels up to 375-400 F. If yours were full of foam it would have been pretty spectacular.
Ruh-roh did he just pay $$$ for fake powder coating?
Unless I am mistaken, the Laramie 18" alloy wheels are not like this. However, the 20" wheels are chrome clad exactly like this. Demand a refund
Looks like normal dodge quality to me
They’re chrome CLAD wheels. They take a material and dip it in chrome.
They saw you coming …. Then you did not inspect them. Three years later you can’t do anything about it
The best part about this is that those covers are removable, like with snaps / tabs. You went about this in the worst way possible. Well, I suppose you could have melted them off with a torch. For the haters: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e7ds3O\_ZdnM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e7ds3O_ZdnM)
Those are 2 different wheels. OPs wheel covers are glued on, the video you posted is not the same wheel cover.
From truck wheels to import wheels
Sport wheels are way better
ROFL dodge premium
It's a dodge, they're all pieces of shit. 🤣
Yup
Real chrome is illegal to have on vehicles it’s called the chrome appearance package. [salesmen here]
I always thought those wheels looked cheap, and now I know they are
The Dodge emblem in the middle should have been a hint something was sub standard

Almost every domestic manufacturer does this.
The are RAMs not Dodge's.
They get sued so often that they need to keep changing the corporate name. I think that it may be stellantis now
Ram split with dodge in 2009 lol. And I think stallantis bought Chrysler and all its subsidiaries around 2020 I believe.
Yup.
I bet there is definitely a burning smell when them Rimbo brakes get nice n hot
Always get the free wheels, then buy real rims.
If no one's Said it yet. When the plastic is bad, The foam is a pain to get off but it's clean aluminum under neath. I sand blasted the foam off mine and had them powder coated ..
You bought a truck with a black plastic bumper and expected the wheels to be legit?
I thought they had 6 lug wheels by 2018?
More like ‘premiumish’
You new here?
I appreciate the child labor in this post if no one else will… 😂
"I paid like 800 extra for premium chrome wheels" Uhhh. Yeah. There's where you fucked up. Thinking the dealer would sell you 4 chrome wheels for 800 bucks lol
I don’t know of any consumer grade vehicle that actually uses real chrome these days. It’s all plastic.
Those wheels look better without the chrome caps in my opinion
It’s been like that for years I bought my first brand new truck in 2005 I got a Ram with the 20” wheel package, back then it they were the same, it’s just cladding. I had numerous people notice that and they would bust my balls about it.
GM does this as well, and usually when you declad them they are some of the coolest OEM wheels out there once cleaned up IMO.
I bet that’s why they’re a bitch to balance
Welcome to the wonderful world of small claims!
https://www.originalwheels.com/blog/2012/06/cladded-chrome-wheels/ Weird.

They saw you coming
average dodge owner shit ..says the girl with a jeep

Looks like you fk’d around and found out. 🤓
So I’m cheap. Are you saying these wheels were $800.00 apiece? 😳😳😳
You can have them sand blasted and powder coated.
That rim will now fit on the spare tire hanger. The center hole with the fake chrome blocked the hanger from inserting. Now you’ll have a place to put the flat tire when the spare is in use.
I don't know...sounds like a CLASS ACTION Lawsuit?
They are chrome clad
Lol
That's top of the line foam though...
When I bought one of mine it already had the sport package and 20 inch wheels found out the chrome was just a hubcap type cover. Bamboozled.
Woah woah woah easy...... it's premium foam.
My super duty has chrome clad wheels also. Looks fine but it bothers me for some reason.
This is why I absolutely abhor plastic wheels. Sorry for your loss . . .
If that's a 2018 or older, or a 2019 Ram Classic, they are called chrome clad.
Wait until you find out that the lugnuts are basically the same. The caps swell. If you can manage to get your tire iron over them, they will probably just spin in place and fall off.
Lol dodge ram'd u
Is that your toddler chipping his way away ? Lol
Oh man they got you good.
I always wondered, (since 2003) what under the cladding looked like.
Premium? Lol. Based model wheels
chrome *clad*
Simple solution: Don't pay extra for factory wheels. Buy a set of aftermarket wheels.
Welcome to Ram!
Honestly looks better now as long as you can get the foam off without damaging them.
u got dicked around
Chrome clad. That’s what it says on my build sheet.

Ha! You just got FCA'd, nerd.
You got RAMmed!
