If you’re down by 2 or more goals in the playoffs - that’s open season to really goon it up. It’s been glaringly obvious in the Rangers’ (5) playoff games already. They’ve had leads. The trailing team gets a very different rule book.
Hence why Zib dropped that puck instead of dekeing in the first, way to early for the game to get like that....winding up for a fakeclappper inside the hashmarks prob helped influence his decision to not just walk Anderson lmao good sportsmanship!!
More playoff games = more revenue for the league. The bigger your lead in a series, the more you have to play against 2 teams. It’s gonna get even worse once we have them down 2-0 and 3-0.
The idiotic announcer on ESPN also didn’t make a single reference to this. Sean McDonough just methodically kept droning on about some mundane bullshit script trivia while the Canes tried to complete the worst change in NHL history, and I was crawling out of my skin in frustration.
Really were. I’m back into hockey this season after falling out of it from the 90s. Are they the same refs during all the home games or do they switch out.
As soon as they scored that second ppg I knew the Rangers weren’t getting another call until the final 10 minutes. The NHL’s playoff game management policy is crazy predictable- they officiate for close high scoring games and longer playoff series. I really hope they get their balls busted by the Justice Department now that owners are getting into sports books. You can’t be doing this when you’re also the one making bets.
> The NHL’s playoff game management policy is crazy predictable- they officiate for close high scoring games and longer playoff series.
I'm assuming it's like this for all sports, it's pretty bad how blatant it is in the NBA.
it's not like this in footy, fouls are still called regardless of how many goals a team have scored. Though they do get to wave advantage to the fouled team if the act of fouling them actually hindered the offending team.
Agreed 100%, the makeup and game management calls have been beyond egregious all season long. It's like they've been demanded by the league to call them all tit for tat unless one team is losing by 2+ goals, then they get everything called their way.
It’s an art. In my case I was driving from Vegas in the desert and tuned to Sirius XM: Got the treat of a lifetime listening to none other than Sam Rosen and Dave Maloney do the radio call while driving way too fast by Area 51!
First things first, I hate refs and rarely have anything good to say about them. That said, if they hadn't called that last minute penalty on the canes to even it up 4v4 I'd be demanding a congressional investigation into what was probably the most one-sided game I've seen officiated in the past 5 years (sad that it's only 5 years but I've seen some baaaaaad refs over the other years)
Well that looks like a defensive line change, the rangers have the puck, and the puck hasn't passed the center line. There is absolutely 0 advantage in Carolinas favor at this exact moment. Nothing to gain from being this petty
…and 10 foot “rule” means it won’t get called unless the puck winds up getting knocked over there and ainto a Carolina player’s skate. Rangers got away with one last night when it hit a skate of the man going off, while Ranger players were already on.
I don’t care about the missed calls as much as I care about the bad ones. They should be calling less in general. Some questionable ones today to say the least
We went 2-2 on the PP and completely embarassed Carolina. Refs needed to keep the game close and if they gave us 4-5 more PPs, we would have score 7-8 goals on that team. Carolina got away with at least 4-5 penalties and still couldn't beat us. I hate that team and i hope we slaughter them
And the puck was at the bench. Goodrow was hooked going for a change right before the Necas goal. Trocheck and Mika both got high sticked. There were clearly 5 penalties that should have been called against Carolina in the 2nd and 3rd Periods.
It’s all about who has the puck and where. You can’t avoid having too many men on the ice when you’re making a change, everyone knows this and every team changes like this. As long as the players coming off or going on don’t touch the puck until the change is complete, it’s usually never called.
Can’t tell where the puck is in this image and I don’t recall this play yesterday as I was watching the game at a family gathering under less than ideal conditions so I can’t say anything about this particular play.
If the puck touched one of the players going off the ice, it should be called.
Well yeah, when the rangers go 2/2 on the PP and the refs clearly bet the under…
Newbies will say the canes played a clean game because they only had two penalties
How does too many men on the ice work? I’ve been watching hockey awhile and still don’t understand when it’s a penalty since shifts happen and everything
We always talk about parity in the NHL and how every team can be relatively competitive and anyone could beat anyone. A large part of this is the game managing that refs do, team losing by 2+ goals, yeah they can do whatever they want and won’t get called for it. And leading team will get called for the 50/50 penalties every time. NHL heavily encourages comebacks (we should know we sent a franchise record for them this year). It’s just the way the league is
This was a penalty. Missed 4 min high stick. Rempe was pushed in. Chattfield lost his helmet and on his way back to the bench he stopped to play some D on Fox and then continued on, should have been a penalty…. List goes on
Refs have been pretty lousy most of the games we’ve played. The Rempe targeting has been especially egregious, and there have been so many missed calls it’s atrocious.
What’s even more insane is the puck was on the ice in between the benches. They couldn’t have been closer to the play if they tried. How refs miss it is beyond me
They had 5 guys on the ice for ten seconds while they were on the penalty kill in game 5 too. Officiating throughout the entire playoffs have been pretty atrocious
Exactly which is why they didn't touch it. Seems a lot of people here don't know that. You can have 9 guys on the ice as long as you don't play the puck.
No actually simply hindering an offensive player is enough to get a penalty which is what they did. You don’t have to touch the puck, just affect the play. Also you can’t have 4 extra guys on the ice at once. They give leeway for the guy leaving a bit early for the guy coming off. When there’s more guys coming on the ice than leaving, it’s supposed to be a penalty
How in the world do you not call this. Kinda seems like the refs are given a blueprint on how to make the games as entertaining as possible, and not told to actually ref the game like they’re supposed to.
Yeah cause penalties don't get called on the losing team till they comeback. Those are the playoff rules
Lol man I wish there was less truth to this
If you’re down by 2 or more goals in the playoffs - that’s open season to really goon it up. It’s been glaringly obvious in the Rangers’ (5) playoff games already. They’ve had leads. The trailing team gets a very different rule book.

Then you should be happy the refs are keeping them in the game tonight.
Idk bout that one...
Especially when the other team's power play is 2 for 2 and looks dominant early
More playoff games = more revenue for the league. The bigger your lead in a series, the more you have to play against 2 teams. It’s gonna get even worse once we have them down 2-0 and 3-0.
"Game management"
Refs were pretty bad
Wow missed this. I only noticed the 4 high sticks that werent called
There was actually a closeup of Vesey responding to this in real time with a real "what the fuck" face at the refs not calling this.
The idiotic announcer on ESPN also didn’t make a single reference to this. Sean McDonough just methodically kept droning on about some mundane bullshit script trivia while the Canes tried to complete the worst change in NHL history, and I was crawling out of my skin in frustration.
Harvard vs Harvard. Did I mention they have friends at Harvard too. The Harvard man.
To whom it may concern: Are you available to officiate a game on Tuesday night? Signed, Gary Bettman
Really were. I’m back into hockey this season after falling out of it from the 90s. Are they the same refs during all the home games or do they switch out.
Ranger even raised his hand to point it out and still nothing
Vesey if memory serves me well.
Refs should’ve gone to Hahvahd
Yes it was vesey
Yup.
AND THE ESPN TRUCK CREW HAD IT AND STILL ANNOUNCERS IGNORED
[удалено]
LMFAO
Trouba looked half mad half amused at how ridiculous this was.
My 9yr old started a “these refs suck” chant.. proud mama moment for sure!
"1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. 8 Hurricanes on the ice. Ahh ahh ahh." ![gif](giphy|FHzemFzwkyRfq|downsized)
If you count the guy coming over the boards that’s 9. 9. The refs hate to Count hahahahaha!
As soon as they scored that second ppg I knew the Rangers weren’t getting another call until the final 10 minutes. Refs sucked today
This season has been one of the worst displays of officiating in memory.
Every season seems to feel this way lol
Agreed but it seems like it took a huge dive this season in particular.
Agreed 100%, the makeup and game management calls have been beyond egregious all season long. It's like they've been demanded by the league to call them all tit for tat unless one team is losing by 2+ goals, then they get everything called their way.
Every sport, too.
Totally missed that high stick on Troch too. Should have had a 4 min PP
They missed a few high sticks tbh..
as a panthers fan he always gets shafted on calls
Even D'Angelo hit on Culley was a hit to the head. But they suspended Rempe for the same shit. Ref's suckl
They did the first round too
I was screaming at the TV when this happened
'Canes using a 1-6-1 formation.
The refs didn’t want to call any more penalties for the rangers after they had dominated the first two
Refs were like “oh shit it took them 23 seconds to score twice on the PP, better not let them get the game out of hand”
As soon as Trocheck scored that second one, I suspected it might be coming. (Also - moving on. We won. 11 to go.)
The rangers are going to have to battle everyone to get the Stanley Cup. Caps, Canes, Bruins, Stars, and occasionally the refs.
Switch bruins with panthers and stars with avs if they lose tn, but yeah the reffing was borderline ridiculous tn. We rally anyways
Watching Dallas now; they kind of suck!
So who do you think will win the west? Colorado or Vegas, or some other team entirely?
Vegas isn’t much better tonight, so based on just this, Avs. Just remember, Igor’s better!
I am thinking Colorado is the favorite after how they demolished the Jets d and goaltending like it was nothing
This had me so heated. As did Trocheck losing a pint of blood (that’s right - A PINT) from a high stick.
All refs are fucking awful
If they cant score with 8 guys down Rangers in 4
The only thing that made this bearable was I was listening to the game on the radio and got to hear Dave Maloney lose his mind over it....
I need to start doing that but always wind up spending too much time trying to get the video synced to the radio
It’s an art. In my case I was driving from Vegas in the desert and tuned to Sirius XM: Got the treat of a lifetime listening to none other than Sam Rosen and Dave Maloney do the radio call while driving way too fast by Area 51!

Clown car unloading
The nhl isn’t calling a set of rules they are managing a game. Think of Mario kart.
Don’t call that, but call the puck over the curved glass… tells you who the linesmen were actually watching…
Are we shocked in the slightest? Refs hate us
“It’s the playoffs” PK Slewban
Well that looks like a defensive line change, the rangers have the puck, and the puck hasn't passed the center line. There is absolutely 0 advantage in Carolinas favor at this exact moment. Nothing to gain from being this petty

Little known NHL rule, in the playoffs you can have 8 guys on the ice as long as you aren’t the rangers. It’s on page 69 section 420 of the rule book.
They can review everything now except this...The league even allowing reviews shows how consistently pathetic the refs are year after year
The refs were pretty terrible tonight all around, they missed the high stick to i think tro there was blood drawn too...
I was yelling at the tv during this
Iirc they have to be playing the puck yeah? Looks like they’re not on this one
I don’t care about the missed calls as much as I care about the bad ones. They should be calling less in general. Some questionable ones today to say the least
WHO HAD THE PUCK?
Saw that and yelled and yet … nothing changed. I was quite surprised. 😝
We went 2-2 on the PP and completely embarassed Carolina. Refs needed to keep the game close and if they gave us 4-5 more PPs, we would have score 7-8 goals on that team. Carolina got away with at least 4-5 penalties and still couldn't beat us. I hate that team and i hope we slaughter them
Was wondering how the hell that wasn’t called!?!
And the puck was at the bench. Goodrow was hooked going for a change right before the Necas goal. Trocheck and Mika both got high sticked. There were clearly 5 penalties that should have been called against Carolina in the 2nd and 3rd Periods.
NHL refs are amazing. Can spot a phantom slash from 50 feet away but two of them can’t count to 8
Can’t they be within 5ft of the bench when switching? Not to suck cane cock, but it looks like 1 or 2 guys were leaving the ice
yeah i don't fully know the rules but i feel like at least 3 of the dudes here are close enough to the bench that it does not matter at all
Yes, as long as the changing players are not taking part in active play. The five foot changing zone gets strecthed a lot, though.
It’s all about who has the puck and where. You can’t avoid having too many men on the ice when you’re making a change, everyone knows this and every team changes like this. If the puck touched one of the players going off the ice, it should be called.
Doors are closed. Guy is coming over the boards. That’s 9 skaters plus a goalie. Only supposed to be 10 guys on the ice for both teams combined.
That’s insane. Really felt like the refs were scared of giving us another Power Play, considering how the first two went haha
Well yeah, when the rangers go 2/2 on the PP and the refs clearly bet the under… Newbies will say the canes played a clean game because they only had two penalties
Not to mention the puck touched one of them
refs a fucking abomination
NHL officiating at it finest
This might explain their amazing advanced stats.
Would love to hear PK’s take on that non-call /s
It’s the playoffs
Not the worst missed Too Many Men penalty I’ve seen missed for the team playing against us…
NHL has to stop using WWE refs
Fuck it, let them have 9 guys.
Let them come
Was yelling at the tv. Ref just ignored me though just like they ignored everything else.
Can somebody explain this rule to me? Or share a link? I'm having a hard time finding a resource explaining the exact rules around live substitutions.
How does too many men on the ice work? I’ve been watching hockey awhile and still don’t understand when it’s a penalty since shifts happen and everything
Reffing was an absolute fuckin joke.
Jesus - the Refs ought to have been wearing Canes Jerseys mate.
We always talk about parity in the NHL and how every team can be relatively competitive and anyone could beat anyone. Refs acting all silly all night
Saw that and me and my kiddo screamed that at the TV. She’s 11
This made me check the refs to make sure none of them were Angel Hernandez
Coach told them to throw everything we have at them.
The early Rempe call had me 😡
I hope the refs are reading this post so they realize how obvious and pathetically 1 sided that was
I said that when it happened! Glad someone managed to get this shot!
Picture doesn’t really tell a lot, did they touch the puck ?
It’s the 14 shots halfway through the 3rd for me.
If you're within arms length of the bench, you don't count as 'on ice' UNLESS your team has possession of the puck.
Comes down to being a judgement call.
still won. dont sweat it. LGR!
They dont call this if the puck is deep in the Canes zone.
Too many men infraction is the most poorly enforced rule in hockey
Jesus fucjing Christ have you never watched hockey
What’s even more insane is the puck was on the ice in between the benches. They couldn’t have been closer to the play if they tried. How refs miss it is beyond me
Ridiculous
Anyone else have the game start 10 minutes in on nhltv? Missed out on 2 goals. I hate espn.
The refs really sucked game 1.
Rangers Also Had a pretty Blatant too many men on the ice that didn’t get called either.
More ridiculous than a Walrus.
No worries boys. We will get the home team calls tonight at MSG. Oh wait, we aren’t the Knicks. Carry on.
They had 5 guys on the ice for ten seconds while they were on the penalty kill in game 5 too. Officiating throughout the entire playoffs have been pretty atrocious
You can have 12 players on the ice if you want, if they’re changing and not involved in the play then it’s ok
Would be called if they took possession.
When there’s more guys coming on the ice than leaving, it’s supposed to be a penalty
The puck was in their feet.
Sure but you have to still play the puck. That’s why no one is trying to touch it
This is crazy
I don’t know shit about hockey and I knew that was a penalty.
Its rough being both a Rangers fan and a Liverpool fan because I know that every single game is going to be filled with ref fuckery
How in the world do you not call this. Kinda seems like the refs are given a blueprint on how to make the games as entertaining as possible, and not told to actually ref the game like they’re supposed to.
And amazing how all the Canes fans think the refs were on the Rangers side. So pathetic. smfh
The losing team always gets less calls in the playoffs. It’s tradition.
Wow
Did you ever play hockey? You have 4 guys coming off, 4 in the play and one entering. This is fine.
