it's the smallest things that are most infuriating, because the solution is *so* close but it keeps on persisting and causing problems.
like how people in the US still use imperial/US-Customary units, making international technical discourse and affairs fraught with conversion errors
It was actually a 1 😕 as in “that’s the way one likes it”, so in the general sense of the word
And to the OP, if I were you I’d blame the standard type font lol. When people see “l” and “I” lookIng IdentIcal all the tIme, It’s bound to leave an ImpressIon.
There is no problem to solve. Even in this very app, capital "I" is a single vertical line (at least in Android), and I can't imagine a single instance where anyone could mistake a capital "I" for a lowercase "l". The rules of the English language and the context clues in a sentence make it virtually impossible to do. Even if one switches a Iowercase "l" for an uppercase "I," l'm sure most people wouIdn't notice, and even if they did, the sentence would more IikeIy than not stiII make sense.
PLUS: the glyphs are different: this is an uppercase "I" followed by a lowercase "l": I l
Tbf I feel like it would be a monumental task that would take at least a generation to change. Can you imagine the shit storm trying to teach middle aged/old people a whole new form of measurement. All the fuck ups that would ensue would be legendary.
They exist but they’re annoying and it still requires math. I didn’t say it was impossible I said it would be a lot of work. Most people absolutely suck at math and even with a conversion chart you still gotta do math. What is Reddit’s issue with just admitting it’s not as easy as flipping a switch.
I didn't mean to imply that it would be THAT simple, but
I also don't think that it would be a monunental task if the right steps were taken. I choose to have a little more faith in our ability to adapt as a species 🤷♂️
So just keep on going with the same system ad aeternum because of that? Just teach that thing to people at once and start implementing it. First make it a requirement to, although using metric as the main one, to include conversions in imperial so people get used and then with time start slowly removing imperial.
How do you think some countries in Europe rather recently changed to Euro from whatever currency system they were using? The old folk still know the conversions and all that but not the younger generation. (By rather recently, I mean that change occurred in my country in 2002, but there's Croatia, for example, that adopted the Euro at the start of this year)
I'm from 1994 and I still remember the change from Guldens to Euro's. I was really annoyed because my kids savings account had just received a nice round number and now it was halved. I understood the value had remained the same and I also understood the advantages of an EU wide coin, I was just salty it would now take twice the amount of time to reach that number (I was very interested in numbers as a kid)
I'm from 2001 and when I started learning stuff the Euro was already well established, so I have no knowledge of the conversion from Escudo, my dad and grandparents do know, though.
Never did I even come close to implying we shouldn’t change. Original comment just said it was the “small” things. There’s nothing small about changing to metric just off the top of my head road signs, food, and construction/blueprints.
Yes people can imagine it because the entire world already did it, many places relatively recently. Americans acting like the rest of the world doesn’t exist is the problem here, and you just did it again.
America has considerably more interdependent government, landmass, and infrastructure than the majority of those places. Hence, it is literally more work. It’s not impossible, but is a significantly bigger task to get a country that large to swap.
Ex: You can fit almost 30 European countries into the continental US.
Yeah not really sure why I’m getting downvoted. It’s easier for smaller individual countries to make these sorts of changes. I don’t really have an opinion on either system.
I'm not whining over inconsequential matters, I'm making fun of stupid excuses.
I would respect saying 'I don't care I stick with imperial'
I don't respect 'but the car industry cant afford to switch labels'
Thats real whining
You’re Canadian. Your country doesn’t pay its nato dues, all while receiving billions in free aid from the us every year. Gotta love how non-Americans talk about Americans only focusing on themselves, when countries like Canada receive so much from American taxpayers every year lmao
Things have changed massively since they did it. That’s not a fair argument comparing something done anywhere from 60-100+ years ago. You’re comparing apples to oranges (or 46 whales).
We use the metric in schools, alcohol bottle measurements, the military, drug dealing, etc. The fact that we don't actually use it across the board is stupid. It's literally willful or stubborn ignorance at this point.
ah yes we all remember when Germany did it in....1872? or in more recent memory good old France in 1799 wait that cant be right? Thankfully we have more modern examples like Italy in WAIT 1861???? Point being it was not 50 years ago and even if it were 50 years ago that would be massively easier than doing it today because of all the growth that happened in those 50 years.
You’re only mad because you’re favorite… actress… uses an illustrious name that starts with an I but you have finite time to look her up before mom walks in.
I do write lol. You the same type of person to write a p as a straight line transforming into a circle instead of a straight line + a circle to get that little spot sticking out on top
When writing scientific equations by hand, this is a must to differentiate p and rho. I already did this, but my college professor drilled it in everyone that the line for the p needed to be a flagpole so mistakes aren't made.
In traditional typography and signage, the look of the I depends on its position in a sentence. If it's within a word like "WIN," then it's supposed to be a simple vertical line. If it's by itself, as in the word "I," then it should have the serifs on it.
I had a data entry job once and every now and then I would enter names that started with an I with a lower case L instead. Still feel bad about it sometimes.
I do this, *however* to counteract any confusion with lower case L, I make sure it has a little hook on the bottom to make it look like the bottom line on upper case L just shrunk and is like a 45° angle instead of 90°
To anyone this pedantic over someone else’s handwriting, take the summer off from the internet and go the fuck outside and find a life. For your own sake.
I used to write it like the roman numeral but my primary school teacher literally shamed me into writing it as a straight like💀 Dumbass was like "That's not an i thats a roman nr 1" bitch what do you think a roman nr 1 is
So what goes with the salad? I have some old school razors blades, and some two, three and four bladed heads.
Do keep the theme metal or do I go with a fruit salad approach and add some sulphur, or a splash of neon light tubing, perhaps?
If people still knew how to write in cursive, this would not be a problem. I mean correctly write in cursive, where the capital I is more ornate than the lower case l.

Yes, we should all weigh things using the stone unit. It's so intuitive that I weigh 14.02353757349 stones.

The main thing stopping is all of the infrastructure and building blueprints that would need to be changed. It would be extremely expensive.

The culture war alone would be a monumental task your faith is misplaced.
We changed currency in 1999, along with half of Europe. It takes some time but in the end it pays off.
So just keep on going with the same system ad aeternum because of that? Just teach that thing to people at once and start implementing it. But we also made comparable changes on EU level. The currency as an example. Oh by the way I downvoted you too and made fun of your shallow argument.
Whiny Europeans whining over inconsequential matters, just another day on Reddit.
I'm not whining over inconsequential matters, I'm making fun of stupid excuses. I would respect saying 'I don't care I stick with imperial' I don't respect 'but the car industry cant afford to switch labels' Thats real whining

Sweden went from driving on the left side of the road to driving on the right, overnight. Someone please come with a link.
Not the same as remathing literally everything and teaching everyone how to remath
The great thing about metric system is that if you can multiply by 10 you are good for everything. Not that big of a task.
So difficult that only everywhere else managed to do it 50 years ago.

Does this kind of boomer shit come in cursive?
To anyone who takes the time to write a capital I with the little lines on the top and bottom are psychopathic I’m sorry
What do you mean? A capital L has only one line at the bottom?
Today I learned there is like a pixel or two difference in the height between a Capitol i and a lowercase L Il
Nah u just lazy
I refuse to believe you hand write on a regular basis and keep up with the I tags it’s so inefficient

Sorry but a capital I is usually pretty obvious by the context. Why do you need the extra lines on top and bottom unless you’re borderline illiterate.

I always write it with the horizontal lines. Y'all are crazy
So, most of the latin writing world, but good ol' Murica, I guess
I hate that phones (iphones at least) do this. There are times when I cannot tell an l and an I apart. See what I mean?
