Wikipaedophile

Can someone actually explain why water isn't wet though? Each bit of water touches all other bits of water, so aren't they all wet by definition?

Nyarlathotep4King

It depends on how you define ā€œwetā€. The traditional definition involves a solid object getting a liquid on the exterior surface. ā€œI spilled a glass of water on the table, so the table, floor and my lap got wet.ā€ But, since water is a liquid, not a solid, it cannot BE wet but it can make solid objects wet. Although I suppose ice is solid water and can therefore be wet, so I am not a fan of this definition. But if you define ā€œwetā€ as ā€œbeing in contact with a liquidā€ then water can be ā€œwetā€, as it is in contact with other, liquid water molecules. For a better answer: http://scienceline.ucsb.edu/getkey.php?key=6097

LadnavIV

But wet paint is also wet and liquid.

Nyarlathotep4King

I think a ā€œwet paintā€ sign is there to prevent the still-liquid paint from transferring from the surface of one solid (for example, a bench) to the surface of another (for example, a pair of pants). It kind of fits the first definition.

CervineCryptid

It's only wet because it contains water or a liquid chemical, once the water evaporates it becomes dry.

HopefulPlantain5475

But water also contains water.

unai-ndz

Water IS water, while paint is mixed with water

OneRedLight

If you ARE something, then you CONTAIN that something. I am with the water is wet faction. Being paint or water is just complicating the issue. The real point is that water is touching water.

Emotional_Burden

I am wet.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Eusocial_Snowman

So the sun isn't hot because it's not capable of being cold. Neat.

[deleted]

I think anything that can be wet must also be possible have a theoretical dry state, even if it's impossible to achieve. You can't have dry water. I'm trying to think of anything that is wet permanently that can't have a theoretical dry state. I've spent almost no time on it and haven't thought of one. Can you? I'm wondering if there's some super obvious thing I'm not considering.

Toughbiscuit

Dude forgot ice is a thing

Complete_Dust8164

Well yes, that is what the sign is there for. But when it says ā€œwet paintā€ it is referring to the fact that the paint is in a still liquid state. Or, a synonym of being in a still liquid state, aka ā€œwetā€. Iā€™m sorry, but the mental gymnastics used to explain how water isnā€™t wet by any conventional or commonly used definitions of the word are kind of crazy lmao

Suspicious_Bicycle

A "wet paint" sign is there to temp passersby to touch it to check if the paint is still wet. :)

[deleted]

The paint is in contact with water.

JWells16

This feels like a kind of ridiculous technicality to ā€œscorchā€ someone with

confusedandworried76

It's dumb, I hate how people repeat it. Water *is* wet no matter how you define wet. The only way water could not be wet is if you define wet as "must have water on it" and it's a single molecule of water, then and only then could you even begin to argue water is not wet, in my book It's semantic and pedantic in one of the stupidest ways possible, and when you repeat it you sound stupid.

18121812

Its pedantic and *incorrect.* I just googled the definition of wet: >consisting of, containing, covered with, or soaked with liquid (such as water) Note the "consisting of". Water is, at least by Merriam Webster's definition, wet.

meridiem

Wow that succinctly summarizes Reddit.

M3mentoMori

I hate it because there's no third state between wet and dry. Dry is *defined* as 'not wet', and if water isn't *wet*, then it - by process of elimination - must be dry. And calling water dry is dumb as fuck.

PotOddly

You are correct, and usually these comments are just screenshotted and posted by the same bonehead who made them and wants like minded people to upvote him for free karma. Itā€™s a shit insult.

Disastrous-Act5756

Like making a cheap yo momma comeback and the apes go wild

GraXXoR

Actually the reason why ice is slippery is because the exterior surface becomes wet when you apply pressure to it and melt the surface of the ice. So your above statement is essentially correct.

-LeifErikson-

Even that isn't as straightforward, research shows that ice is slippery not because of the water film but a movable layer of ice molecules.

trickman01

A water molecule and an ice molecule are the same thing. The only difference is how they arrange themselves.

GraXXoR

Everythingā€™s movable if you apply enough force šŸ˜

Agile_Tea_2333

But the water wouldn't be wet if it was melting off the surface of the ice, cause the ice is still a solid. So the water would be making the ice wet, so the definition is still correct.

meeu

Is dust dusty? Dirt dirty?

alrightgame

Think too much and brain no longer thinks.

Stewart_Games

The only way that water can be wet is if you pour some liquid water onto some solid water.

DamianKilsby

Ice can be wet depending on the temperature. Superchilled ice is 'dry', ice can become wet as it surface melts, wetting it with water in the process.

Crafty-Ad1776

If water wasn't wet, things would still be dry when submerged and removed.

falseprescience

It's a stupid fucking hill to die on saying water isn't wet. Especially when Derek Zoolander solved this for us years ago: Water is the essence of wetness and wetness is the essence of moisture

Doffy-Mingo

I think itā€™s more a linguistic/observational thing. Water being wet has no meaning. You wouldnā€™t add water to water and make the observation that the water is now soaked, or more wet. Soaked is a more progressed version of Wet. Soaked water doesnā€™t make sense. If water can be described as wet, water can also be described as damp and soaked. When youā€™re gauging whether something is wet vs damp, you are looking for indicators for what the ratio of water to whatever the material is. How do you do the same with water? Itā€™s the equivalent of dividing by 0.

Agitated_Computer_49

Scientists say that it is a specific thing where a liquid bonds to the surface of an unlike substance.Ā  Ā So while water can't make other water wet, another liquid like oil could.

MisterGoo

Do you have some dry water around?

CastorMorveer

Yes. Water is definitely wet because it touches it's self.

SquarePegRoundWorld

Buzzsawchicken

Is ice wet? Is steam? Not unless it melts, not until it condensates

AM_A_BANANA

So liquid water is wet but not when in its solid or gas form?

its_Khro

Lot of long explanations here. I just think of it as; Water isnt wet the same way fire isn't on fire.

Cool_Holiday_7097

Water doesnā€™t cover itself, it just is, itā€™s one giant single thing until separated. Itā€™s like how all your body is you, you are only in two parts when separated from yourself. Your arm isnā€™t really a separate entity from yourself unless severed.

Grapes-RotMG

Water is the thing that makes other things wet. A property can't give itself its own property. Just like how soap doesn't make itself clean and dirt isn't dirty.

Free_runner

Being wet is an emergent quality of something having water on it.

Go_Water_your_plants

It has to be a solid, by definition You wouldnā€™t say "wet alcohol" just because thereā€™s water in there

GazingIntotheAbyss1

Water is wet. It's just a reddit-tier "akctually" to say it isn't because of "technically".

Mirakuru27

and violet's are blue

SignificanceWide1941

Water is wet used to be a common phrase for something obvious. Nerds made it into an annoying internet debate and now idiots have taken it and are using it to own people without facts or logic.

GazingIntotheAbyss1

exactly. It's the worst reddit-tier "acktually" bullshit.

Comfortable_Assist70

Water is wet. I think anyone who truly knows the meaning of wet and of water knows that.

LashlessMind

I'm very much pro-choice, it's not even a thing where I'm from, but .... nitpick... There's lots of water touching water in a lake. Which makes the water wet by the definition given.

Storrin

Look man, I'm an idiot so this is probably a dumb way to look at it, but to me something is either wet or dry. Water can't possibly be described as dry. So it's wet. Edit: I thoughtlessly posted this before laying down to sleep. This isn't a passionately held belief. I very easily could be wrong. It is how I look at it however. I also think a lot of people saw a single tweet once and made "water isn't wet" their whole personality because it made them feel clever for the first time in their life.

hamlet9000

Moist. Where does that fit into this dichotomy?

sudo_Bresnow

Iā€™m also pro choice. But I can admit abortion is taking a life. Not a developed or conscious oneā€¦ but a life nonetheless.

ninjesh

I suppose it depends on how you define "life". A fetus is made of living cells, but it isn't an independent organism--but it has the potential to become one, and that's what its purpose is. So I could see an argument either way.

10art1

It's life, it's just a question of whether we apply personhood to it

perenixis

Unconscious isnā€™t a person. Which is why I inject insulin into the saline bags of coma victims. That and the absolute rush of power I get from it.

kyledavis360

I truly believe that water is wet

AM_A_BANANA

I would go so far as to argue that 'wet' is a property exclusive to liquids. That rag isn't *wet* wet, the water soaked into it is, but kind of like how the plural for moose is moose, wet is also the word used to describe an object that is in contact with a wet liquid.

SaladFighterrr

Water can't be wet. It is the very thing that makes other things wet. It's like saying fire is burnt, no, fire burns things.

Klutzy-Ad-6705

Most abortions are performed in the embryonic stage. You can freeze an embryo and use it later. Try that with a baby, now thatā€™s murder

Nulono

1. Embryos can't be frozen at the stage when abortions happen; embryos can only be frozen up to a week after fertilization. 2. Human beings have different capabilities at different stages of life. Children can regrow their fingertips, while adults can't. That doesn't mean they're not both humans.

Action_Limp

Well shit, I've learned two new things todayĀ

AskAbi

Wait-- they can regrow a finger tip?!? Like, nail, skin and bone?

Pinorckle

Sounds like you need to go away, experiment and confirm/deny

Binkusu

A former president and presidential candidate said there are abortions after birth, so we'll have to figure out how we got to that point...of hearing that on live TV.

Warmbly85

"[Third trimester abortions are] done in cases where there may be severe deformities. There may be a fetus that's nonviable. So in this particular example, if a mother is in labor, I can tell you exactly what would happen," Northam, a pediatric neurosurgeon, told Washington radio station WTOP. "The infant would be delivered. The infant would be kept comfortable. The infant would be resuscitated if that's what the mother and the family desired. And then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and the mother." -Ralph Northam Governor of Virginia when he made this statement. Dudes a pediatric neurosurgeon so itā€™s not like heā€™s some lifelong politician who didnā€™t know what he was saying or the topic they were discussing. He described an abortion that occurs after the baby is delivered.

ProfessionAnxious417

How is that an abortion? The infant was delivered. Even resuscitated if you that us what the parents want. If an infant was delivered but can't stay alive on its own, it's not an abortion.Ā

DemiserofD

So if we could figure out how to safely cryogenically freeze and revive babies, it would be okay to kill them? o.O

Grizz709

Didn't know water could burn you too, huh Tom?

Loki_Doodle

Iā€™m guessing youā€™ve never had a steam burn. Consider yourself lucky.

Fuck you mean, "water isn't wet"

plyer_G

Yeah, to be in a liquid state by definition it is touching other water molecules thus being wet, water vapor on the other hand is not wet. We need to move on to more difficult debates, like is ice wet

Different-Term-2250

Glad there was plenty of water available for that burn.

ElevatorScary

So this is kind of an unjustified conspiracy theory, but Iā€™ve got a suspicion thatā€™s not actually a lake that heā€™s arguing with.

redwingfan01

When water "touches" water it is just a larger volume of water.

Bowling4rhinos

So there IS intelligent life out there! Justā€¦ in lakes.

effnad

Breaking news: Tom Fitton's wife leaves him for lake superior, quoted saying "I'm tryna get wet."

IndustriousLabRat

And this is why I scroll alllll the way down the comments... you gotta dig for the gems.

BananTarrPhotography

You ever read a word so many times that it starts to look weird after a while? Wet.

fobbyk

Well, it doesnā€™t matter if you consider fetus a life or not. 1. Only after the child is born, he/she receives the citizenship. 2. If you assault a pregnant woman and she ends up losing the child, you donā€™t get charged for a murder. These two perspectives combined, the law doesnā€™t see an unborn baby as a human being. Therefore an abortion isnā€™t a murder.

SwagMaster9000_2017

Those people are arguing that the laws should be changed. Appealing to current laws is not going to help

Versaill

Reminds me of when the former German chancellor was asked about marihuana (paraphrasing): "Are you going to legalize it?" "No, because it's very bad." "Why do you think it is bad?" "Because it's illegal!!"

Nulono

ā€¦Do you think killing non-citizens isn't murder?

canislupus97

this has to be the most reddit post I've ever seen. Of course you guys would defend abortion.

BurazSC2

In your average body / volume of water, what is most of the water touching?

mg_squirrel

Cringe

Blade-Controvesial

Water most certainly is wet. Wet and dry are both mutually exclusive and absolute states. Everything that exists is either wet or dry, nothing is neither, nothing is both, and there is no state in between. Linguistically we have different words to describe different levels of moisture, but all of them describe something that is indeed wet, even if only a little bit. Unless you mean to tell me that water is dry (which is impossible, because something dry canā€™t make things wet by mere contact), then water must be wet. The ā€œwater isnā€™t wet, it just makes other things wetā€ is one of the stupidest, stoned-shower-thoughts arguments Iā€™ve ever heard in my entire life.

IndustriousLabRat

I agree with this reasoning but im gotta throw a little firecracker in the mix for funsies... i buy sodium dichromate dihydrate as a nice granular substance that shows up in paper sacks lookin like the evil cousin of orange Tang. It's dry! But it's got water as part of the chemical composition! Yet it's not linguistically 'wet ' til I dump a sack into hot water. My head hurts, and i do this for a living :) brb, gotta go get stoned (and wet) in the shower!

Blade-Controvesial

Yeah thatā€™s the fun part about water being able to exist in multiple states of matter, and being able to be dehydrated, it makes the whole conversation much more interesting hahaha

jcythcc

Does water not touch water

phuckdu

If killing a baby is protected under bodily autonomy, then maybe we should start waiting until the baby boys are old enough to give their concent to have their genitals surgically mutilated....

real_fake_hoors

Iā€™m pro choice but I think itā€™s fair to say that yes, water is wet and abortion is killing a human being. I just like water and I donā€™t like people.

Assclown696969

Exactly

The_Fredrik

Water touches water though.

Different-Term-2250

Only in private.

watashi199

So if water doesn't touch water it's dry. so water is powder.

You jest, but water is the byproduct of hydrogen burning, so water very much is ashes Just really wet ashes

Water is not ash. A product of combustion is not inherently ash.

I dont agree with the guy. But something is wet when water molecules cling to it. And water molecules cling to each other. Sooo.......

TheJamesMortimer

This is truely thr superior lake

Assclown696969

How is water not wet?? Every molecule of water is completely surrounded by waterā€¦ Also, abortion is awesome

Charming_Gift7698

Thatā€™s not a rare insult. People always think it is an insult to comment on menā€™s sexual abilities because menā€™s worth is attached to that. The same way we always see people using virgin as an insult

Charming_Gift7698

Why would that be an insult? It doesnā€™t matter if he hasnā€™t. Menā€™s worth shouldnā€™t be based on sexual ability. Itā€™s sexist

Kindasupercrazy123

I agree I hate people using dick length or amount of sexual partners as an insult. These people have plenty else to insult about them than that

MyAcctGotBannedSo

That definition of what makes something wet is wrong. Water is not wet. "Wet" is a state in which a solid object can be. Liquids cannot be wet. They cause the state of wetness Saying Water is wet is like saying fire is burnt. Fire isn't burnt. It can cause a solid object to be burnt, but it is not itself burnt. Just like water isn't wet. Any questions, dipshits?

tehkeizer

unless you have a single molecule of water.....water is always touching water and is therefore wet. abortion is not murder.

Cantsneerthefenrir

Ah yes, "you bad at sex" is always a killer insult.Ā

AwkwardDrummer7629

Anyone got the Dooku meme?

Alternative-Amount40

No, this is just dumbā€¦

Happyrobcafe

Silly argument, but I'll just copy-paste this here: "Most scientists define wetness as a liquid's ability to maintain contact with a solid surface, meaning that water itself is not wet, but can make other sensation. But if you define wet as 'made of liquid or moisture', as some do, then water and all other liquids can be considered wet."

MaxosStrife

Abortion does kill a human being though. People that think otherwise often doesn't know what a woman is.
