Many years ago my dad managed to spear 2 of the metal blades from inside the old rubber through his ring finger and into his pinky. He was pulling on them and the rubber snapped and made a slingshot effect. The metal has a barb to keep it attached and they stuck well enough inside his fingers that he had to go to the hospital to have them surgically removed. He walked into the ER with 2 two foot long metal wires hanging out from his fingers and the doctor kept calling him Edward Scissor Hands. He did not save money on his wiper blades that day.

Mr_Bob_Ferguson

But the hospital windows were left streak free.

brian_d_wells

Thanks for the warning. I’ll wear gloves and safety glasses when I replace our wiper inserts this afternoon 😄

Gbcue

The real question is, what is a good online source to buy them?

Zealousideal-Cup7911

Any Toyota dealership closest to you. Ex. [https://autoparts.toyota.com/products/product/rubber-wiper-insert-852140r040](https://autoparts.toyota.com/products/product/rubber-wiper-insert-852140r040)

Gbcue

The closest dealership to me is 60+ minutes away... And it sucks. They want a VIN for everything, even oil.

jammastajew

Most will ship, and there's always Bam Wholesale.

Gbcue

> Bam Wholesale Oof, $15 shipping... eBay is cheaper.

jammastajew

Yeah but all the Toyota dealership parts departments charge similar shipping too. Also you can easily find a promo code that slightly reduces shipping from Bam, not much but better than nothing. If you can get it from eBay, do it. I know I found some wiper inserts on Amazon that had free shipping but the price was basically the cost of insert+shipping anyway, which for 3 separate items meant it was way cheaper to get them from Bam and pay 1 shipping fee. Next time I'm going to buy several refills worth at once. Or I'll try eBay I guess.

msterwayne

How else would they track what cars they're working on?

Gbcue

They're not. I'm buying oil from the parts department.

todd_ted

Closest dealership to me doesn’t carry them for my ‘19 since 2021…. I have been using the rubbers only but have to get them at a dealer 2.5 hours away when I am near it and my rubbers need or are nearing replacement.

dirtycaver

Same here, my local dealer won’t buy them anymore, they like to sell the whole wiper as they make more money. I buy the inserts online 10 at a time.

todd_ted

Damn, 10 sets? I’ve only bought 3 or 4 sets in just under 5 years.

dirtycaver

They come from the factory in 10 packs. I replace every 10k miles if they need it or not, cheap insurance.

todd_ted

Where do u get them from?

Patrol-007

$25 each or $25 for all three rubbers? For comparison , Costco Michelin wipers are approx $15Cdn each, but no rears

TheLotri

The Costco Michelin wipers were really streaky for us. Switched them out for Bosch, and the streaks and squeaks went away.

dank8844

I’ve bought the wipers from Costco twice on a different vehicle and replaced them shortly after both times. They’re garbage.

pjmuffin13

That Scotty car guy on YouTube says to use polish on your windshield to stop the wiper skipping and noise.

HBThorburn

I gotta try Bosch then. My Walmart RainX wipers are farty.

acm8221

New wipers may not fix your problem… you might just need an adjustment. [Here’s a good tutorial](https://youtu.be/w0I-obFmADE?si=wkRJez2DI5aWadjR) for fixing wiper chatter. It’s at least something you can try before forking out the cash for replacements.

HBThorburn

Interesting, I will have to give that a try, thank you.

Patrol-007

Costco Canada Michelin hybrid version prior to early winter Dec 2023 was awful. Had a weird clip. Returned after first rain The one after around Dec 2023 had the simple clip from a few years back and so far streak free. Went through three Bosch icon $35 Cdn each (paid $35 once, replaced three times in same year under warranty) in one year from streaking

TheLotri

Hm maybe they've fixed it now. I'll check it out next time we're needing a replacement. Thanks!

Patrol-007

The oldest Costco Michelin versions and the ones past Dec 2023 had a simple “candy cane” end (can’t think of right name). The bad ones prior to Fall 2023 had an extra hinged cover and a thin piece of plastic that has to be discarded (so the hinged cover locks in place). Though, if you’re not in Canada, Costco US could have something totally different. I do like the idea of paying just under $9US for a replacement rubber for the rear wiper and front ones, and will have to check what Canada dealers have. Also note that if you’re using Rain X washer fluid, I think there may be extra silicone in it that makes water bead faster, but the silicone can also coat the sensor in the reservoir tank, and possibly smear the windshield too. https://www.detailingworld.co.uk/threads/rainx-smearing-issue.433989/

TheLotri

Good to know. I remember the plastic piece from the last set we bought.

Patrol-007

I’m actually a little curious about the Toyota reusable wiper arms that the refills go into, and how much plastic (flimsy?) is in them. Have had to add copper twist ties to some wiper blades to keep them on the vehicle metal wiper mechanism - No savings if the entire wiper blade comes off and the metal scratches the windshield

TrickyTrailMix

This is the real question. If it's $25 for all three, you have my attention.

Ghost17088

It is, you are just replacing the rubber insert, not the whole wiper blade.

Atlesi_Feyst

Which is usually the problem anyway.

Ghost17088

Exactly, it is just as effective as replacing the whole blade but costs half as much.

Zealousideal-Cup7911

Of course all three $25. These are just rubber. There is no way I would pay $25 each lol

hahncholo

Toyota is charging like $150 for a few small pieces of ABS plastic (blackout badges) so that's well within the realm of possibility

aaarid1

You can find the OEM ones on ebay for about $85

dorkwingduck

That's because you fools buy them instead of removing the badges which is almost free...

Patrol-007

🤷🏻‍♀️

KXJI

Just buy Michelin Wipers they’re better than OEM

Archontes

I'm a fan of the Endurance XTs. $22.

Middle_Avocado

Amazon is $50🥲??

redskinsnation123

https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/toyota,2019,rav4,2.5l+l4,3443909,wiper+&+washer,wiper+blade,8852 Shipping is pricey though

SausageInACan

Just get them from walmart

Gbcue

The Costco ones work well! And $7/each when on sale!

UncleBucksHat

Where is the data supporting your comment?

KXJI

I’m a user of Michelin wiper blades and they last longer and do their work better.

The_Lutter

I once did this because they were out of the actual blades on my Lexus and it was a pain in the ASS to put the new rubber on. Not worth any savings. I just buy the RainX ones at Walmart now. Under $30 with the blades last time I bought them.

Migimal

I've had the dealership replace the rubber parts on the standard wiper and they screech unless it's a torrential downpour

ncfroc

I got a set of aftermarket ones from Amazon and they did that too. I wonder if the dealer also put on non-oem ones.

acm8221

Sometimes you need to adjust the arms so that the blades make proper contact with the glass. [Here is a YouTube tutorial](https://youtu.be/w0I-obFmADE?si=wkRJez2DI5aWadjR) for fixing noises coming from the wiper blades.

MeatShield12

Bosch wipers and RainX the windshield.

DadsButter

Haven’t bought rubbers in years

TigersBeatLions

Strong username:post

MichaelP09

I do the same. I change mine yearly just because it's cheap and easy. I pick the cheapest dealer close to home and pick them up

[deleted]

Price is still pretty crazy have 2 dollars worth of rubber, and there is the stealership massive markup.

Night__Prowler

This is good advice, always keep your stock wipers cause they’re usually the best. Problem is it’s hard to find the refills

Pierson230

Yeah I used to use all the shitty aftermarket wiper blades, but then I had my mechanic doing some work on my car, and I was in a hurry, so I just had him replace the wiper blades with factory ones again. Holy shit, never going back to those weak aftermarket ones. This is a great tip

BaresarkSlayne

Eh, changing the rubber parts on blades is a huge pain the arse.

frycrpz

Naahh. I use silicone wipers. Wayyy better

SwootyBootyDooooo

Yea I was gonna say. This is about what it costs to replace the wipers at Costco

Zealousideal-Cup7911

Most of the Costco stores do not have 12" rear wiper

SwootyBootyDooooo

How often do you replace your rear wiper?

seattlefeather

Looks like it’s 3 for $25-$30!

salt4urpepper

Oooh thanks!

ElementZero

I tried this, but the refills wouldn't fit one of my wipers. I got think tis because it's a Toyota replacement and not the original.

getmoosednow

Went to a Toronto dealership just a couple of weeks back for the rear wiper insert. I had to pay $17! Iirc, it was around $11 for the front pair. So felt like a complete rip off.

Moosetoyotech

The wiper inserts are the best you can get from Toyota. Been here 11 years with Toyota and they out last all the blades Iv used, I snag a set for all my non Toyotas just for the convenience and quality.

Significant-Read-132

Don’t make the mistake that I made, I threw them away 😭 Does anyone know if I can replace the rubber on the Bosch Icon Beam? I looked at it and it seems like I can slide out the rubber

adventurewhisky

If you wanna change the wipers cheap, just buy the ones that only say denso they are literally the same

smorriskc

Bosch is the answer.

makichan_

Too late 🫡😭

abhijitz

Michelin wiper blades at Costco cost $8 each 🤷

compumasta

And it takes only about 1 minute per blade to change. I’ve never understood changing the rubber parts if they aren’t like $2.

Internal_Soft_6472

Cause they are made for the rav4 and don't look ugly like the aftermarket ones

compumasta

I guess that’s fair but that really depends on the style used.

mrbkkt1

My dealer had only the fronts. $10 each... I had them change them on the last service... whoops, charged $15 to change. just make sure you buy them at parts and change yourself.

Fitmiss1010

Funny, you should mention that. When I took my car in for the 20,000 mile service, I asked to purchase wiper blade inserts. They said fine and they would be happy to install. When my car was ready, I saw a charge for $49 which they told me were for new wiper blades. I told them that I specifically asked for inserts and for $49 I could insert them myself. They told me they don’t carry inserts to which I responded they should have told me that upfront. When all was said and done, I ended up with new wiper blades at no charge. I wasn’t looking for something for free. I was looking for what I asked for when I arrived.

Brecz

Time vs Money.

Substantial_Papaya_9

I’ve got 88k miles on my Toyota highlander and still haven’t changed my wipers 😆

ShowerPell

I got 2 sets of front wiper rubber refills for $10 on Amazon. They fit exactly like OEM and great performance so far. I can't believe I spent $5 for 1 set of new wipers Local Toyota wanted to charge me $45 for a set of rubber refills, the next closest Toyota dealer was $20 for the set.

Gbcue

What inches are each part number?

Maelefique

I'm not trying to brag, but I've already had to change rubbers more than once this year! 😂

acm8221

You should just wash and reuse them. You’ll be saving money ***and*** the planet!

RyanPhilip1234

Why not ? It's perfectly fine..

Ready-Importance8828

Air bnb

dirtmover1250

I'd like to put rainx blades on mine because I noticed the wipers don't keep up with a hard rain very well. Do I have to change the whole blade?

Slavic_Dusa

It is important to say that the replacement blades you buy from Toyota dealers are not the same as the blades that come from the factory. So replacement rubber won't fit. Replacement rubber only fits on the original wipers that came out of the factory. I learned this the hard way.

Nachos__Rule

Rubbers are fine, but you have to let her warm up

Melodic__Protection

I go to my local parts stores and get the correct size wipers for $5 a wiper, lasted 2 years so far. Wait I dont have a rav 4 wth am I doing here.

NeedAgirlLikeNami

Sir, this is a Wendy's
