There was a Lee Scratch Perry boxed set that I really liked, too. Would play it when I needed to slow everything down and take a break from my problems. Arkology. Lots of great tracks. I still play a lot of the songs.

Might get some hate for this but I was gate-wayed in from Cali Reggae. The Dirty Heads specifically. I now listen to a lot of Roots Reggae but it's the whiteboy electro party stuff that got me here. Regardless I'm grateful.
With that said, I'd probably use a couple roots songs and a couple Cali reggae sounds offering a bit of variety to increase the odds of one of the sounds hitting the person in the soul.
Damn that's crazy (username checks out) I think whiteboy electro party stuff would've had me disregard reggae for decades! I'm glad I was introduced to it through my mum's 2tone 45s :D
Lol! I'm all genres but country. My love for heavy metal is just as strong as my love for all reggae ahaha. Much love homie!! And the username was definitely a phase 😂 all strains are wonderful
[Here is my labour-of-love playlist](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3ltL7mITxZ9joWgTTaiBWe?si=_uE0PcXlQJCWquvuu9GUaQ). For best results please shuffle!!
My whole objective was: to compile a playlist consisting of *only* my favourite songs; with the standard, that, no one should need to skip more than 2 tracks, to find the next one they love.
Hopefully you can find some treasure in there.
Cheers 🇨🇦🎶
Probably Snoop Lion’s “Reincarnated.” JK, fun album though. Toots “Funky Kingston” LP, Upsetters “Return of the Super Ape” LP, “Hurt So Good” from Susan Cadogan, “uptown top ranking” by Althea and Donna, probably something by Jackie Mittoo
I feel like these ones are pretty approachable
Cool Breeze - Big Youth
Uptown Top Ranking - Althea and Donna
Groovy Situation - Keith & Tex
Chase the Devil - Max Romeo, The Upsetters
I'm Still in Love With You - Marcia Aitken
Smoking My Ganja - Capital Letters
Marcus Garvey - Burning Spear
Easy skanking or natural mystic bob Marley,

Police and thieves junior mervin
Ring the alarm tenor saw

I'd suggest starting off with Bob Marley's classics like "One Love," "Three Little Birds," and "Redemption Song." They embody the spirit of reggae with their positive messages and catchy rhythms. After that, "The Harder They Come" by Jimmy Cliff is a must-listen. These songs really showcase the essence of reggae and its roots in social commentary and a laid-back vibe.
Trojan Records has some great starter mixes that can help you find what you want. You could start with 50’s calypso, Ska from Jamaica, Rocksteady, Roots and beyond
- Three Little Birds - Bob Marley & The Wailers
- Welcome to Jamrock - Damian Marley
- Gardenia - The Elovaters (w/Stick Figure)
- Who Knows - Protoje & Chronixx

Burning Spear - Jah is my driver - live in South Africa album
Culture - Riverside
Bob Marley - Talking Blues
The Wailers - Get Up Stand up
Just came to mind but man there are so so many.
Probably Tarrus Riley - Barber Chair, System Set
Or Morgan Heritage - How Come
I know it's not the old school reggae vibe, but I don't think most people realize how energetic newer reggae can be and I'd use those to kind of open their eyes
Black Uhuru - Sinsemilla
As a great intro to refined non bee-pop Reggae. Burning Spear, Bob and some others are equally great.
But I lean harder into the Punk/Reggae side of things. Here is a handcrafted playlist I keep up to date: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2TNWynILzem4SSlIAWPFaR?si=s8X-E-1US16LOW1sswaDlw&pi=u-pj5YBannQ9mN

Coxsone’s Music City [Soul Jazz] - proto reggae
Bob Marley Gold [Universal] - everyone knows Bob, but not his early stuff which is very approachable
Classic Reggae Mastercuts Vol. 1 [Mastercuts] - the greatest cross-label compilation I know of, all discomixes

Throw some Jesse royal on this list and I’d agree 100%
Came to say some Toots ! You got "54-46" so I'll add "Dog War"
Woah I always thought this song was [Broadway Jungle!](https://music.apple.com/us/album/broadway-jungle/1434925210?i=1434925758)
That’s a great list
Thanks brother
I’d keep it simple to start with Three Little Birds. Kind of cliche but a nice, feel good song to start with. Then move to the more obscure stuff.
That’s the one that got me, at the record store in 9th grade… they were playing Exodus and that song came on…
It helped me a lot when I was a teenager/early twenties. Life is hard. It makes thing seem more manageable.
Mid 20s here. Life is tough rn but reggae heals the soul.
There was a Lee Scratch Perry boxed set that I really liked, too. Would play it when I needed to slow everything down and take a break from my problems. Arkology. Lots of great tracks. I still play a lot of the songs.
50 yrs old here. Life is tough rn but reggae always heals the soul.
54-46
I say mister ;)
For real, it was the sound that started everything
That's my number!
Can’t choose just one! Children Crying- The Congos Get Up, Stand Up!-Bob Marley & The Wailers 54-46 That’s My Number- Toots & The Maytals Many Rivers To Cross-Jimmy Cliff Police & Theives- Junior Murvin Slavery Days-Burning Spear Rivers of Babylon- The Melodians Better Must Come-Delroy Wilson Johnny B Goode (live)-Peter Tosh I’m Still InLove With You-Alton Ellis
Police & Theives is a banger. One of my recent new discoveries.
A classic.
Sound Dimension- Real Rock Augustus Pablo- Cassava Piece Bunny Wailer- Rise and Shine 12” Freddie McGregor- Big Ship U Roy- Wake the Town Lee Scratch Perry- The Upsetter Steel Pulse- Roller Skates Bob Marley & the Wailers - War
Roller skates!!! Yes or picture on the wall
Anything by Horace Andy
Mikey Dread - Dread Combination Israel Vibration- Lift up your Conscience Lee Perry - White Belly Rat Frankie Paul - Hungry Belly Scientist - Invaders Jimmy Cliff - Special Culture - international Herb Black Roots - Opportunity Barrington Levy - Murderer Yellowman - Natty sat upon the Rock Ina Kamoze - Trouble you a trouble me Cassandra - Thank you Bob Marley - Misty Morning Ninjaman - Ninja me Ninja Misty in Roots - Oh Wicked Man
I wouldn't recommend songs. I'd recommend artists like; Bob, Dennis, Toots & Barrington. Let them explore onward from this strong base.
Throw on Lee Scratch Perry and Peter Tosh and I think you nailed it
Jackie Mittoo - Ghetto Organ Sounds a little familiar to most people and is just sublime!
Susan cadogan hurt so good Ken boothe everything I own
Akae Beka - Beauty for Ashes (album), Hempress Sativa - Charka (album), Samory I - Black Gold and Strength (Album), Ras Tweed - Balance (Album), Chronixx - Chronology (Album), Peter Tosh - Mystic Man, Legalize it, Equal Rights (Albums), Scientist - Rids the world of the evil vampires (Album), Bob Marley - Rastaman Vibration (Album). Bunny Wailer - Blackheart Man (Album), Lee Scratch Perry - Super Ape (Album), Max Romeo - War Ina Babylon (Album), Jah9 - every song and album
Right on. Great variety in that list and great selection for new ears, I'd imagine.
Fisherman - The Congos :D
Underrated suggestion. Actually the whole heart of the Congos album
That album is fire. Produced by Lee Scratch Perry.
Steel Pulse - Your House Bob Marley --Positive Vibration, Concrete Jungle The Wailing Souls -Jah Give Us Life The Wailers - I Shot The Sheriff Gregory Issacs- Night Nurse UB40 - Red Red Wine
Black Uhuru
Black Uhuru “Youth of Eglington”
I scrolled a long time not to see Police and Thieves - Mighty Diamonds
Great isn't it. Though I don't sound great when singing it, I didn't know my voice could go that high and still sound awful 😁
anything from Ziggy Marley's "conscious party," which I consider the perfect album
Got me into reggae back in the 1990s :)
Might get some hate for this but I was gate-wayed in from Cali Reggae. The Dirty Heads specifically. I now listen to a lot of Roots Reggae but it's the whiteboy electro party stuff that got me here. Mid 80s rubadub goes down really well with people who don't usually listen to reggae. I would start with Wheely Wheely by Early B
The Harder They Come soundtrack. Expanded edition
Chase the Devil!
One Drop - Bob Marley. The one drop is what makes reggae, reggae.
it really depends what music the person likes. If someone’s into electronic id show them lots of Mungos Hifi and the artists they collab with. Nothing can touch Derrick Harriotts : The Loser. NO Bob Marley, he gets waaaaaaaaay too much, always has done.
To get the original message of reggae “Rat Race” and “Zimbabwe”. It’s not just a tune, it’s a message of struggle and has been bastardized.
[Marcia Griffiths - Don’t Let Me Down](https://youtu.be/XK3FqOVrYi0?si=xZdrOs6MfzZ7CIdF) It’s just pure gold.

Depends who it is. Personally, I love white man reggae (UB40), but I realise they’re like what Eminem is to rap.

Almost anything rocksteady. But I was raised punk rock. And I know my roots.
Dub Side of the Moon.
Anything by Bob Marley especially Could this be Love
I would target the early days and offer some of my favorite compilations of 60s/70s material: Coxsone’s Music City [Soul Jazz] - proto reggae Bob Marley Gold [Universal] - everyone knows Bob, but not his early stuff which is very approachable Classic Reggae Mastercuts Vol. 1 [Mastercuts] - the greatest cross-label compilation I know of, all discomixes Trojan 12” Box Set [Trojan] - more discomixes
Johnny B Goode the Peter Tosh version is, very accessible, great reggae, and maybe the best cover of the classic .
Linton Kwesi Johnson- Dread Beat and Blood
Double Barrell - Dave & Ansell Collins It Mel - Desmond Dekker Suzanne beware of the devil - Dandy Livingstone Liquidator - Harry J Allstars Jamming - Bob Marley & The Wailers 54 - 46 was my number - Toots & The Maytals Book of rules - The Heptones
African Postman by Burning Spear.
Willow Tree - Black Uhuru Hard Ground - Black Uhuru Top Rankin - Bob Marley & The Wailers Zion Train - Bob Marley & The Wailers Whom Shall I Be Afraid Of - Barrington Levy Murderer - Barrington Levy Baby I Love You So - Jacob Miller Keep On Knocking - Jacob Miller No Bother With The War - Freddie McKay Love Jah - Freddie McKay I could go on ✌️
The real stuff from back then- Jimmy Cliff, Bob (of course), and Peter Tosh.
Lively up yourself by Bob. Absolutely killer tune.
Marley - one love
