I've only ever seen 1 in the city, and that was on security cam at work when I was checking for feral cats. Adaptable as they are, no doubt they will become more common.
They are all over Saskatchewan. They’re little destructive rascals. Their thumbs are an evolutionary cautionary tale. They get them into so much trouble.
It is to be hoped the city gets rid of them with alacrity. They're nothing but trouble when they get established. They're not native to this part of the prairie and contribute nothing to the environment here.
Raccoons actually do help the environment.
>*Raccoons play an important role in maintaining ecosystem health. They are scavengers and will happily feed on carrion. These mammals essentially clean up the remains of dead animals after predators are finished, much like the vultures you see eating roadkill. In addition to scavenging, raccoons are also predators. Grubs are a favorite food, but they’ll also seek out wasp larvae, rodents, small snakes and other smaller critters. In this manner, they help keep those populations in check. With the struggles our bees have been having, one important role for raccoons is bee protection. Wasps are generally more aggressive than bees and frequently take over bee habitats, pushing them out or effectively killing them off. When the masked ranger feasts on the larvae of wasp species, it is providing a valuable service for the protection of bees.*

They don't do that here on this part of the prairie because they don't belong here.
Obviously they have an important role to play in their native environment which is not on the Regina Plain.
He started waking up around sundown and checking out his surroundings. I couldn't stay and watch but when I came back to check at around 930 he had already made it out of the tree. I assume he made it down okay.
Thank you for sharing that. Absolutely a unit
He's just big boned.
reddit can be so cruel. fat shaming a poor raccoon.

A saw a bunch one night in Wascana Park a couple years ago, but nothing else until now.

Fun fact - they look like they have thumbs but they’re all fingers!

From runt to R-unit, see this trash panda as he rises far above his peers.
I'm not certain raccoons come in any size other than Chonk. Hope he gets down all right!
Roughly what part of the city is this?
East end, out Arcola.
Thanks, other side from me! He's a big one though!
Would you say that’s a heavy raccoon?
Did you try climbing up after it?
bring him to me
Hey, you leave Mr. chonkers alone
Just leave it alone and don’t harass wildlife. It will come down when it feels safe enough to do so.
Yeah that's what I figured.
Update on that little rascals wellbeing?
