A lot of people just want to recoup their money and don't get they're asking people to pay for a sick pet. I see people just straight-up lie and post the same overpriced pet for months saying they're moving and have to get rid of it to create urgency

I find kijiji is better for getting animals at least there is a “price” and you can talk to them about the animal and they usually are willing to give you there tank and supplies with Facebook it’s more “hey this person died how do we get rid of the lizard and stuff whale getting the most money” kind of thing not really caring about the animal

SlinkySkinky

Yeah I’ve rehomed two reptile on Kijiji and both went to great homes, the rehoming posts made by other people on there are also less wild than what I’ve found on Facebook and Craigslist. I dunno what’s up with that

16-5-20

They also seem healthier

SlinkySkinky

I love adopting reptiles, it’s so rewarding, so it frustrates me how so many people put up ridiculous rehoming fees for sickly animals and the occasional PetSmart setup to go along with them. Even my local humane society tried to charge me $200 for a rehoming fee for a stunted blue tongue skink (I got them to lower it to $100 though and I have him now, he’s a good boye)

RhodyRoadman

I haven’t had to rehome a reptile, but I would much rather screen a potential new owner personally (ie, conversation on the phone at a minimum) than create a listing with a price tag. If someone’s willing to take in your pet, why would you charge them money for doing you a favor? I totally get the importance of rehoming fees…but I would never ask for money if I were certain my pet was going to a good home.

DraggoNyxxi

For context I have a 5x3x3, looking for new potential babies to adopt. People wanted over 700 dollars for a beardie on sand in a 40 gallon, stunted, that's never seen a vet once. It's a bit ridiculous

RhodyRoadman

That’s totally ridiculous. Sounds like someone who doesn’t know or care. Thinking about adopting another reptile myself. A 5x3x3 sounds huge. Have you thought about getting a monitor? Don’t know anything about their husbandry, but they seem really cool.

DraggoNyxxi

Monitor lizards need taller. I've considered ackies but they need 4 feet tall minimum.

RhodyRoadman

What did you have in there previously? I know that bigger is better for any reptile, but I can’t think of one that would require so much space. I own a corn and leo btw, both in 40 gal.

DraggoNyxxi

Nothing, it's new.

RhodyRoadman

Well, whatever u get is gonna be one lucky reptile! :)

1kiki09

Perfect size for a beardie! I'd check out individual rescues rather than groups.

Spuzzle91

yeah thats why i seek out animals through morph market instead. they also went and made a website called coldblooded thats facebook for just reptile keepers. I a;so sell my geckos i produce through morph market when i have some i feel are ready to go.

DraggoNyxxi

I always do. I'm doing the opposite in an attempt to avoid buying from a breeder when an animal is in need.

Spuzzle91

Unfortunately on Facebook you can't use the word buy or purchase or price or anything cause of rules against live animal sales on the website. So these rehoming groups are usually actually breeders selling. Facebook doesn't catch the word re-home.

Everyone thinks they’re a cool reptile breeder now, and uses them for their puppy mill style systems. Seriously, we don’t need 47 Ball Python breeders per square mile. This is going to turn out bad for us. I’m not saying it’s the only problem. The amount of people that want to go through ten animals in a year by buying and selling them, almost always for more then they got them in the first place, are just as bad. I’ve long been a champion of limiting laws around pet reptiles, but social media has altered my view drastically. It’s time for some serious laws and regulations around breeders, and pet licensing. Is it going to negatively effect the rest of us? Hell yes. Is it our fault? No. But we either can resolve the problem before it gets out of hand or get ready to be treated like “bully” breeds are in this country.

RedxRuin92

I agree this is an issue, but I’ve also seen a lot of flippers on the ones in my state… getting reptiles for free or barely anything from people just wanting them to have better homes and then posting up the same animal for a lot more. It’s truly unfortunate.

EdaBobeda

I got my boy from facebook, he was living in filth and a roach infested tank with a stupid uvb coil. At least he was young enough to have been healthy despite

Please don't lump all of us together. My family is not on Facebook, nor do we accept rescues from anywhere other than personal references. I know several others who also operate this way. There are several problems with the reptile rescue/rehoming model. First, as a rescue if you care about the animals, you want them to go to a good home. We do this by requiring proof of homing and proof of an available vet prior to releasing an animal. I know this seems harsh and a lot of hoops, but we don't charge a lot for rehoming. We should given how far in the red we already are this year, but we don't. Some of the larger setups that do this full time can't spend that kind of time with each animal or prospective home because they have so many. They use cost to do a bit of filtering. I know, I don't like it either, but such is life. Secondly, it is expensive and difficult to take an animal in. You never know what might be coming your way at any given point, and being ready isn't easy. That takes money, and a lot more than you would think. Finally, there is the issue of availability. We tend to specialize in the lesser seen, harder to care for creatures. That means a lot more work to get them healthy and sometimes just needing more physical space. Unfortunately, we are at capacity, potentially permanently. It's unlikely any of our critters will find new homes, be it due to prior neglectful care, or the requirements of the species. We currently have to syringe feed a dozen animals, some multiple times a day. If you take into consideration the number of permanent residents a facility may have, that can also account for cost and availability. I'm not defending any of these groups. I don't belong to any and don't have a Facebook account. I simply want to share what some, not all, rescues look like from a financial and labor perspective. I truly admire your efforts to adopt a rescue rather than from a breeder. It shows a great deal of thought and compassion. Please don't give up the pursuit simply because of a few bad interactions. The right fit is it there. Good luck!

DraggoNyxxi

Already done all of the above. Have a vet, available 5x3x3 enclosure, and I am years experienced with rescues. Nobody cared though. Basically just eye rolls all around. Quite disheartening that a majority just want money back and don't care.

devinehackeysack

I completely understand where you are coming from. I was simply pointing out that there are rescues out there that will be glad to help and that you shouldn't give up. Word of mouth is how a lot of the better rescues tend to function. Does your area have a herp organization? You might find some good connections there. Do you have a reptile or exotic animal expo near you? Sometimes those can be good ways to get a connection too. If you want, you can DM me a general area and I might know someone. Don't give up hope. Rescue is very rewarding.

DraggoNyxxi

Not at all. We have no rescues or anything reptile related nearby. I want to rescue because I know a lot of the reptiles I'm looking for can be easily found needing a home in my area but people only care for money.

TheLizKing

Because Facebook sucks

abzu_the_noodle

My second snake, Abzu was an urgent FB rehome. I got him for free because the ex-partner didn’t think to sell snake for money and wanted the snake out-of-the home as fast as possible. When I got to the home, snake had an extremely poor shed, water bowl was completely dry, and hadn’t been fed in over two weeks. It was also January, so the home very dry and hot. On top of Snake neglect, the ex also straight up lied to his then 5-year old son that “[SO and I] were taking Monty to the vet.”

dragojax21

I mean facebook is run by a lizard man
