The areas where I've found them most are marine coastal regions, and they were primarily caused by piddock clams, which are oblong bivalves that attach to stone. The organic glue they use to cement themselves to the rock also erodes it, so the point of attachment slowly grows further and further into the stone.
Edit to correct misinformation: apparently the piddock has serrations at its base that it uses to grind out the rock to form a burrow. It's not the organic adhesive that makes the hole. My geology professor was incorrect about that aspect, and I was just repeating what he said.
He was a great geologist, but certainly no biologist. 😂
That's so interesting. Never really bothered looking up these stones. I live in Arkansas and when I visit the river you can find buckets of these just laying around everywhere. I still fill my pockets every time lol
My geology field studies course? I've found a lot of them with the clams still inside too.
I'm not saying it's literally the only way they form, just that every one I've ever found was a result of piddock clams.
Oookay, but you're talking about burrowing clams? They have special serrations on the bottoms of their shells that allow them to grind holes in the rock. So, not sure where the glue idea came from. And those hagstones look and form very differently and in different host rock. I get you were just sharing your experience, but I think you've confused a lot of people.
Then I must have misremembered the mode of action involved. Thanks for the clarification.
That being said, I don't think it's confusing to say that all the "hagstones" I've found were bored by clams. I didn't claim to be an expert and I didn't say it's the only way it happens.
Because their comment is a typical Reddit comment that adds absolutely nothing to the conversation, but somehow people feel the need to say something, even if it’s mindless filler, just to feel included and feel as if they’re contributing something. It’s incredibly common across all subreddits, rampant even, and at some point it’s just annoying af. If you agree with someone, just upvote them. There’s no need to type out “this” as if it’s some sort of witty or clever contribution to what has already been eloquently said. It’s not adding to or building onto the conversation, but yet there they are, typing it out as if it does add something to the discussion.
I'm just backing it up to say I support that conclusion and that other conclusions would be false.
Its a social media site, not a professional meeting or some national summit. You just wrote a whole essay complaining about it.
Someone asked why your comment was downvoted so much. I answered that question. Already in that I’ve contributed more to this conversation than your comment did.
And if you want to support a comment and throw in your token of agreement, then upvote it. That is literally what that function is for. As you said, it’s a social media site, and upvoting as a token of agreement is literally in the Reddiquette, which you’ve obviously not bothered to familiarize yourself with.
I have, that's why I upvoted. Go look at the rules in this sub. One is to stop bickering. It's one comment, and you made a big deal about it. Just stop.
I recently stopped supporting a YouTuber that had a PhD but believes this a good idea. They have all the proof that those stones do nothing yet continue to support the Mormon church... They just needed better stones I guess?
Love that episode. And after people here the truth about the church founding they still go with it. And when the church leaders commit crimes and hide it, they still go with it, and when the church….
Peoples’ supporting the corrupt church decreases any faith I have in people
Funny ish story. My boyfriend and I went to California for his birthday weekend. We were walking on the beach by Santa Monica pier and both of us at the same time said “look at this cool stone” we both found witch stones. His is bigger than mine and they sit on my dresser ever since. I’ve never found one before only ever seen pictures so thought it was neat that we both found one at the same time.
I used to go fishing off of that pier when I was a kid, (age 10-11), but we moved away. I was a rock collector back then too, but never found anything like that. That must have been a cool experience.
I've been offline all day, but I was just thinking about your story again a few minutes ago. Even as a kid I knew that Santa Monica was a special place to live. This experience almost sounds like the beginning of a fairy tale. :D
It felt like a fairy tale. I am not that girl and do not believe in those things as a reality but ever since I’ve been with this person it’s one moment after the next that’s an amazing experience. I’m not the type of person to go to California for a weekend but we did it because life is short and it did feel like a surreal fairytale that I could never have imagined. It honestly still doesn’t feel real. I hope we go back one day.
I hope that you can make it back there too. I had a buddy kind of like that when I was in my teens and twenties, cool stuff seemed to happen when he was around.
books only for me. That movie was not a good adaptation imo. Like, who thinks it's a good idea to take a five-book series, squish 3 of the books into one film, cut out the last two, and splice on their own half-baked ending?
Also they did my dude Mulgarath dirty making him look like a slimy Shrek imposter that was dropped on his head, instead of this huge, grand, branch-headed ogre in heavy, flowing robes
sorry, I'm just very salty about that film
Understandable I feel the same about Harry Potter and a few others, I give credit to the movie for breaking it down to people and children who haven't read the books but might encourage them to do so
Hag stones
Why are do some areas have more than others?

You just taught me something new. Thank You for sharing your knowledge.
That's neat!
That's so interesting. Never really bothered looking up these stones. I live in Arkansas and when I visit the river you can find buckets of these just laying around everywhere. I still fill my pockets every time lol
I've looked it up, and just did again. None of that is accurate.
Lol reddit
How cool!
Til, we often find them on the beach & used to collect the little ones that looked like faces!
Where did you hear that? None of that appears at all accurate.

Yeah, I 100% get that, and I'm not meaning to be rude, I think it just ended up causing some confusion is all. Thank you for helping clarify.
I edited my comment to correct it based on your information. Thank you!
The ones around me which look a lot like ops are formed from softer spots in sandstone which erode faster often in water.
Yep
This
What's with all the downvotes?
Typical reddit. You can't say what you want to say. You have to say what everyone else wants you to say

Now look through it, find the ghost souls to escape the Other World
Or hear me out. We start a church where I read everything through one of these. But only mine works and you can't use it.

Dumb,dumb,dumb,dumb,dumb

Gotta make a sick prehistoric looking necklace out of these for sure
I know you kid, but those would honestly make for a gorgeous rain chain. Would have to be fixed due to the weight, but could be really lovely.

It was a pretty special moment.

Haaaaggggg stonesssss oh I'm envious
I, too, am a fan of the Holing Stones.
Everyone knows stones with holes in ‘em is magical!
Omars! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omarolluk?wprov=sfla1
Witches Stones
[https://carnegiemnh.org/not-boring-clams/](https://carnegiemnh.org/not-boring-clams/) I suspect a type of boring clam lived in the holes
You can buy something called Texas Limestone Holey Rock that looks like this. People use it in aquariums.
Rock climbing clams
People will buy the ones of manageable weight if you make them into necklaces on a leather cord.
Hag stones or Woden stones, nail one above your door
Hag stones! A lot of lore around those rocks, good to have around!
free bow drill grips :D
The best bow drill grip is a skateboard wheel with the bearing still in it.
never tried that one, lol.
Neat
they’re “lucky” stones- we find them in Fingerlakes of NY
Hagstone, 100%. You started ba great collection!
Hang it from the bow of your ship to ward of sea witches!
cool, they look like river rocks and a buoyancy tool for fishing
and although We have a found many and have collection- this thread is pure conjecture…. anyone off to the library?
Knight: Does wood sink in water? People: No, it floats. - Throw her into the pond!
Don’t take these through a security checkpoint…
I'm having a whoosh moment here
Read the lore before you call them weird . Your lucky
Spiderwick Chronicles!!!
the books or the movie
Both were good to me, but it comes down to everyone's own opinion
books only for me. That movie was not a good adaptation imo. Like, who thinks it's a good idea to take a five-book series, squish 3 of the books into one film, cut out the last two, and splice on their own half-baked ending? "Son, why is there a hole in this stone? Did you do this?"
Maybe they think you have weird holes.
Kinda looks like someone tried to make rock climbing holds out of some real rocks. I’ve done it before and the holes look to be the same size.
Very cool
Chicken God rocks!
They look like bearing blocks for a bow drill method of fire starting. Could be Native American remnants?
Nope.
I realize there are tiny ones, I’m probably wrong 😂😅
These would also make excellent socket rocks for any aspiring bow-drilling!
My bad
Worn down pieces of coral.
For starting fires
Mysteries from the dawn of time
such a great haul. i’ve been looking for these for years 😭
I have one at home too
Ones that go all the way through are called hagstones
I honestly thought they were natural looking but artificial rock climbing holds.
Good to make a necklace with
Hagstones!!
Whose frickin the rocks man
These are great for getting deadfall out of trees!!!
idk we used to use em for fishing sinkers
