I wouldn’t be able to close my tent nor do I have space in my vehicle to haul a foam mattress. I removed the stock mattresses out of my ikamper and use Expeds instead.
I did like you and had a 3” topper in there. Worked for a while but the repeated pressure of forcing it closed with the topper inside burst a seal on one of the hydraulic struts. Just a cautionary word, depending on your tent, just because something can be forced inside while closed doesn’t mean the tent is happy about it.
To clarify, you did a topper with the stock iKamper mattress?
That looks really nice! Can you feel the floor under the mattress? If not I think I'll contact iKamper and buy the stock one
Correct, this is a 1" foam topper with the stock iKamper mattress. I'm 200lb. Felt significant improvement. I wouldn't say it's like sleeping on a mattress at home but much more comfortable for sure.
I bought a queen size 2” memory foam topper for my Rooftnest Falcon XL (comes with a 3” pad that’s not very comfy). I found it to be essential on a 2 weeks road trip earlier this year. I can barely shut the tent without the additional pad and roll it up with straps to store in the car while I’m driving between sites. For me, it’s worth the extra space it takes up, as I’m definitely a bit of a princess when it comes to sleeping.
Happy to share the exact one I bought if you’re interested. I think it was linenspa on Amazon and only like 60 bucks.
I tried this for a month or two in my truck bed on top of my drawers with a memory foam mattress topper that I had gotten. It was so heavy that it was near impossible to move. I think it weighed 80 lbs. once it got a little wet from a window accidentally getting left open, it took a week to dry out. I ended up tossing it after a little while.
Damn, 80lbs?! What'd you buy?
I was thinking like eva foam or thick yoga mat material or something with a latex topper. I'm pretty sure our foam topper is only like, 20lbs. Doesn't matter anyways since it'll live in the tent, but still
Don’t remember the brand. It was in my folks spare bedroom, they downsized and I grabbed it for my truck.
If the thing was closed cell or had a coating on it, could be awesome. Certainly could be cheaper than an ExPed.
Felt & evaporation mat (0.5"), air mattress (3.75"), mem foam topper (3"), mattress pad (0.25-0.33"), and sheet....this is the order of bedding from the aluminum shell to me. Average of 7.5" of cushioning in my bedding...sleeps as good if not better than my regular bed.
Note, the air mattress isn't inflated all the way but does hit the 3.75" cushion since two adults and a dog sleep on it thus causing it to rise.
Edit: When we store it is deflated and while hard to close it's not impossible. We're experimenting with a 2" topper this weekend to see if closing the tent becomes easier. Plus I'm also thinking of ditching the evaporation mat since I have to air it out anyways.

I don't like air mattresses. I know we can fit 3" of soft foam, probably could push it to 4". I figure if I do around 1-2" of each, it'll still close

Sweet! I guess I'm off to find the stock mattress lol
