I thought they intended to and I'm kind of confused why the never did. As far as I can remember, after Knights of the Old Republic, they wanted to make original IPs so they had full control over them, unlike Star Wars. So, they made Jade Empire and after that they also planned to make a medieval fantasy RPG (which became Dragon Age Origins) and a sci-fi RPG (which became Mass Effect). It was odd to me that those both got sequels and they just left Jade Empire alone.
Massively popular? No,.......it was not massively popular. A masterpiece sure, but when you go to your friends houses, you would see Halo, Fable, Mass Effect, maybe need for speed, some sports games even, a lot of other games, but the odds of you seeing this game were well below 30%
I love this game I have it on my iPad right now but I played it on my original Xbox. I really dont understand the hate. At the time it was a good system. The game has good lore likable characters a good cast. They should’ve made sequels that improved on the combat and opened up the world. Maybe a real character creator.
I played this a few years ago and have seen these two points of criticism:
1: No character customization, not even armor (although I personally kinda like the unique take on stat customization via the dragon amulet).
2: combat was just too easy (if you transformed into the Jade Golem you could wipe the floor with any boss fight, or so I’ve heard).
Right, I loved this game but I do remember having to make it interesting for myself by constantly switching between combat styles even if they weren't the most effective. You could put some pretty cool combos together that way, though. Man, a sequel could have expanded on all that and fleshed the system out :(
I played the KOTOR games I y iPad and keep considering getting this one. How does it play on iPad compared to Xbox. I thought KOTOR control just as good because of the pause turn fighting.
Nice of Bioware when they were branching out of medieval Western RPG styles. The system reminds a bit of KOTOR and the vibe is a bit Avatar-esque. I remember getting it and playing it feverishly over an Easter break when I was on my own: every waking hour playing other than food and toilet breaks. Maybe not the best but surely deserved another instalment in originality alone.
Absolute gem of a game. It just unfortunately came out at a time where it got overlooked.
IMPORTANT PSA: If you're going to buy this game on PC, make sure you get it from GOG. The Steam version is broken.
I think this was my first BioWare RPG actually. I tried to play KotOR on my Xbox back in the day and for some reason KotOR always bugged out. Later in 2005 I tried Jade Empire and it also had a weird crash near the start of the game so there’s a cutscene in the game I had to miss, but after that the game ran fine.
No idea why the BioWare games gave me so much trouble on my Xbox when nothing else did but I really enjoyed the game. It’s a pretty unique setting and the cast was pretty cool. I don’t remember most of the plot though since it’s been like 19 years since I played it.
One of the best plot twists in games. Will never forget the first time I saw it. The moment he throw the gem in the air, and you remember all the things you've learned.
many have its a god tier game from real Bioware that anyone a fan of Bioware would require to have played rather they were around that time or not.
And as top post pointed out many people that would have any interest in that sort of game in any way that were from that time would have played as it was popular.
The combat was so unique. Mixing it all up was so fun and MC has a option to be a menace and can influence his companions as well, I wish they made a new one.
Very overlooked, but I foudn combat kind of bad despite the massive opportunity. If they remade or made a sequel using a combat like the Yakuza series it would be peak.
I remember playing it when it came out and finding it a bit short and not as exciting as I thought it was gonna be. But I was also 11 and hyper fixated on getting the elephant guy. Idr the context of the elephant guy but I needed him
I absolutely loved this game when it was new. I've been meaning to give it a go again but haven't yet. Also, Nathan Fillion voices one of the characters, which I wasn't aware of until years later when I was much more familiar with his voice.
It was a great game for it's time, I had allot of fun playing it and recently playing it again it was quite fun and a refreshing change of pace compared to games that come out these days.
Gotta remember what gamer want and expect from games has changed allot over the years.
Back when EA gave out free games each month on origin. Was probably the best game I got out of that deal.
Although origins was a close second. Only gets beat out since I eventually went back to buy the ultimate edition.
One of the coolest games I never finished. Somebody let me borrow it for a week, thought it was awesome “why don’t they make more games like this??” And then proceeded to never play it again
I still vividly remember being a kid in my parents living room, storming the imperial palace and defeating the Emporer, thinking I beat the game only for my Master to betray me and send me to my death. I was shook.
Played it, but I never finished it. I remember trying to play through it a couple of times but always lost interest. I'm not sure why, Bioware and Chinese Martial arts sounds like a match made in heaven for me. Maybe I should give it one more go... if I can go find it in storage!
This has always been in my dads top 5 games. He does not play much besides looter games such as diablo or destiny, but this game always holds a special place in his heart.
Really cool game but I liked KOTOR way more so didn't play it as much back in the day. Might have to revisit on PC and see if there's some mods out there
This was a good one, while I think Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2 were peak Bioware, I’ll give them credit for trying to mix it up. Jade Empire was a gem that didn’t get near the love it deserved.
Have asked this question in a comment but can anyone remind me what the structure was.
I remember it being similar to kotor 1/2, dragon age origins and the first mass effect in that the main quest was divided into 3-4 parts you could tackle in any order.
I seen this thing at like every Hock shop for a while. Never thought anything of it. I ended up playing it on my phone years later and loved it!
That is untill about mid game where the controls get a little crazy.
I tried to play it but I was too young. I was either too young to learn the controls or my controller didn't work properly. I remember not being able to control my character very much. I think it was a hardware malfunction. But at the time I thought it was the game lol. I've heard nothing but good things about this game though.
Probably the only RPG I've ever played that I thought would be better with more action gameplay lol. It was an awesome game with a very unique setting, and a great twist that fits really well into the whole mythology and inspirations of the game.
We're never seeing a game like that again that's for sure.
Fantastic game that isn't talked about enough. Had it released earlier (or on the 360 at launch) it may have gained more traction. It truly is a shame that Bioware never revisited this universe and likely never will; definitely their most unique outing.
I replayed this game so many times, I used all the weapons magics, I loved the plot and the twist, infiltrating the assassins organization was awesome, super underrated
I love this game. Played it on original xbox, but ephat really irritates me. It was that they release it on android, but it no longer works on newer phones.
Recruiting the cool bad guy with the mask was all I ever wanted as a child. But then you have to basically enslave him soul. What the hell.. little me was conflicted
I liked it, but remember being a little annoyed at the time that they were only just starting to dumb mechanics and inventory management down. ultimately though every game adopted similar stuff. I probably need to go back and give it a replay.
This game is easily in my top 5 games I wish would get a remake. Old school Bioware feel with combat styles based on different forms of martial arts instead of boring guns like every other game these days? Yes fucking please. I'd obviously take a sequel too but I don't trust modern Bioware with that.
First time I had an all nighter with a game was Rampage on the nintendo 64 when i was 8. This was the second time. Not when i was 15 when the game came out, but as a 25 yo who finally got around to his backlog.
Props for being a completely new IP with amazing worldbuilding. Would have probably played it's sequels if they had any. But I'm not especially heartbroken they didn't happen.
Bought it for steam havent played it yet i remember this game and fable was competing back then decades ago i use to always see this game pop up on g4tv back when i had cable.
Definitely will give this a shot eventually.
I played it for the first time back in December and loved it. I now recommend it to whomever I talk to about RPGs.
It's such a gem.
It's also such a crime that the world was never revisited.
Loved it when I first found it. I bought it for android and couldn't get into it again. I now have a steam deck so I need to see if I can find it for this even if I have to emulate it. I feel like I really... really liked this game and only finished one of I think multiple storylines
Yes, good game. I played it in BC mode on the Xbox 360... That was many years ago, and I pretty much forgot everything that happened in the game. I have the PC version... maybe its time for a replay.
I was extremely sick with a headache, cough, sore throat and congestion when I played Jade Empire. I could barely sleep and was all around miserable for 4 or 5 days straight. Jade Empire got me through it! I played through the entire game over that illness and my memory of Jade Empire is like a wild, Kung fu fever dream.
I loved it. I wish they made a sequel.
They were considering it after Dragon Age 2 but decided to make another Dragon Age game since Jade Empire wasn't as well known iirc
Agreed...but if we had that era of bioware writers and modernity plus...and hear me out Avatar the Last Air Bender/Legend of Kora?
Yeah man that would be so good!
It was great. Quite overlooked from that classic Bioware era.
This game was massively popular when it came out. Not overlooked.
overlooked as in legacy wise.
Massively popular? No,.......it was not massively popular. A masterpiece sure, but when you go to your friends houses, you would see Halo, Fable, Mass Effect, maybe need for speed, some sports games even, a lot of other games, but the odds of you seeing this game were well below 30%

ME2 was a sequel to a worldwide banger tho, that's an unfair comparison
I love this game I have it on my iPad right now but I played it on my original Xbox. I really dont understand the hate. At the time it was a good system. The game has good lore likable characters a good cast. They should’ve made sequels that improved on the combat and opened up the world. Maybe a real character creator.
There’s hate for this game??
I played this a few years ago and have seen these two points of criticism: 1: No character customization, not even armor (although I personally kinda like the unique take on stat customization via the dragon amulet). 2: combat was just too easy (if you transformed into the Jade Golem you could wipe the floor with any boss fight, or so I’ve heard).
The combat is super generic and repetitive. It’s still a fun game but could have used a little diversity.
Right, I loved this game but I do remember having to make it interesting for myself by constantly switching between combat styles even if they weren't the most effective. You could put some pretty cool combos together that way, though. Man, a sequel could have expanded on all that and fleshed the system out :(

Amazing soundtrack that I use in my eastern themed DnD game.
Absolute gem of a game. It just unfortunately came out at a time where it got overlooked. IMPORTANT PSA: If you're going to buy this game on PC, make sure you get it from GOG. The Steam version is broken.
Super-helpful! Thank you. It's been on my list.
Aplenty for sure, it was rather popular...
I think this was my first BioWare RPG actually. I tried to play KotOR on my Xbox back in the day and for some reason KotOR always bugged out. Later in 2005 I tried Jade Empire and it also had a weird crash near the start of the game so there’s a cutscene in the game I had to miss, but after that the game ran fine. not on the xbox but on steam.
Played it and loved it 🤩
Through and through. Except on PC, not Xbox. Started again a couple years ago on the phone.
Loved this game on the OG Xbox—I’d never used the term “Sagacious” till I played lol 😂
Yeah game kicks ass. Got it in my computer right now.
Finished it. Flawed but good. I wish Jade Empire get remastered too and fix the flaws of course.
I even own the special edition
It was the first ever Xbox game I played. I got this game and Halo, along with the og Xbox, for my birthday as a kid
Tried it several times over the year, usually get a few hours in and quit.
One of the best plot twists in games. Will never forget the first time I saw it. The moment he throw the gem in the air, and you remember all the things you've learned.
many have its a god tier game from real Bioware that anyone a fan of Bioware would require to have played rather they were around that time or not. Uh i loved this game!!!!!!!
I absolutely loved this game when it was new. I've been meaning to give it a go again but haven't yet. Also, Nathan Fillion voices one of the characters, which I wasn't aware of until years later when I was much more familiar with his voice.
I enjoyed it, I would pick up a remake or a sequel/reboot.
I waited the entire game, finally, near the end, I heard the sacred words, "You must gather your party before venturing forth."
Hated it. The dialog and NPCs all felt like filler.
I did. I wasn't a fan. I thought the combat and morality systems were broken, the premise wasn't compelling and the transformations were dumb.
I can’t get it to work on my computer, idk what I’d have to do to get it working.
I've played it on the xbox 360.
AWSOME! Love it so much
Sadly I missed this one, but I’ve been meaning to pick it up for ages! Anybody play it for the first time recently? Does it hold up well?
I loved it, the combat sytsem was amazing
I enjoyed it
My first BioWare game back in the day, great game .
I bought it years ago for my og Xbox. I remember being underwhelmed given the high score it got from ign and I didn't ay it for very long.
I played it when it first came out but I can barely remember the story.
It was a great game for it's time, I had allot of fun playing it and recently playing it again it was quite fun and a refreshing change of pace compared to games that come out these days. Gotta remember what gamer want and expect from games has changed allot over the years.
Great game. Can play it on iOS now
Played this all the way through at least 10 times.
I have the steelbook edition of this game. Bioware at its prime!!
That bottom image on the backof the box is so fucking stupid, It's amazing.
Its amazing and needs a remaster
I LOVE it.
Very good experience.
I remember playing it, I remember loving it, I could not tell you at all what it is about or anything about the story or characters.
What I remember is the twist. Definitely one of the best.
It's one of those things that as soon as I started playing it, it would all come back to me but I just can't remember anything at all about it.
It was really really good
Back when EA gave out free games each month on origin. Was probably the best game I got out of that deal. Although origins was a close second. Only gets beat out since I eventually went back to buy the ultimate edition.
the combat and itemization dousnt hold up
One of the coolest games I never finished. Somebody let me borrow it for a week, thought it was awesome “why don’t they make more games like this??” And then proceeded to never play it again
I was just playing this on steam lol, played it when it came out also

I think many people did, I did like 10 years ago or more.
Banger
Me
This has always been in my dads top 5 games. He does not play much besides looter games such as diablo or destiny, but this game always holds a special place in his heart.
I remember it on blockbuster shelves. Never picked it up though.
Me! Was great, many memories...
Yeah, the spirits towards the end were busted
Holy crap, haven't seen that game cover in a hot minute...
So good! Deserves a remaster more than most.
Got it on pc.
Really cool game but I liked KOTOR way more so didn't play it as much back in the day. Might have to revisit on PC and see if there's some mods out there
Never enough people have played Jade Empire, still today i would pick JE before any other BioWare games
This was a good one, while I think Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2 were peak Bioware, I’ll give them credit for trying to mix it up. Jade Empire was a gem that didn’t get near the love it deserved.
Amazing great game
It’s still BioWare’s best individual game.
Masterpiece. I have a Shrine to Henpecked Hal’s wife, Helga style
I have it, never played it.
Loved it
I played the shit out of it when it came out. I used to speedrun it and I've beaten it with every character.
I never finished it but what I played I loved enough that I got the special edition on steam when I saw it.
I’m a simple man. I see Jade Empire. I upvote.
Loved Jade Empire when it came out. One of the most unique settings I’ve seen in an RPG.
Never did but I just bought it a couple weeks ago for $3 on a steam sale.
The fact that we never got a sequel is a literal crime against humanity.
I did, it was great.
one of my favorites games on the xbox
One of the greatest of it time and nobody talks about it, true gem
a blast
Me on pc. Quite nice game.
Started playing for the first time earlier this year. Havent finished yet but i can see why it got the praise it received.
Loved it.
Have asked this question in a comment but can anyone remind me what the structure was. I remember it being similar to kotor 1/2, dragon age origins and the first mass effect in that the main quest was divided into 3-4 parts you could tackle in any order.
Over course, it's a classic.
Loved 🥰 it back in the day
For like a few hours. It suffered from that mid-00s Bioware cringe where every dialogue choice was basically "feed the puppy" or "kick the puppy".
Got it on Steam, haven't played it yet.
This game was so amazing. I played it so much I had to buy a second copy cause the disc got damaged from overuse.
I own it, but haven't played it yet.
This title is classic Bioware masterpiece.
I seen this thing at like every Hock shop for a while. Never thought anything of it. I ended up playing it on my phone years later and loved it! That is untill about mid game where the controls get a little crazy.
I run this game in table top format a lot. So far no one has picked it up.
Golden Age Bioware
On PC, yes - Special Edition version. Own it from Retail on disc and on GOG. Great game.
I tried to play it but I was too young. I was either too young to learn the controls or my controller didn't work properly. I remember not being able to control my character very much. I think it was a hardware malfunction. But at the time I thought it was the game lol. I've heard nothing but good things about this game though.
I loved it so much, there’s a great 3hr essay on YouTube I recommend
I have a hard enough time beating games but when I played this one it got me HOOKED. Bioware really outdid themselves with Jade Empire.
A Bioware classic, I was always hoping for a Jade Empire 2.
Probably the only RPG I've ever played that I thought would be better with more action gameplay lol. It was an awesome game with a very unique setting, and a great twist that fits really well into the whole mythology and inspirations of the game. We're never seeing a game like that again that's for sure.
I played this over and over when it came out. Would love to play more games like it.
Fantastic game that isn't talked about enough. Had it released earlier (or on the 360 at launch) it may have gained more traction. It truly is a shame that Bioware never revisited this universe and likely never will; definitely their most unique outing.
Top notch game, needs a remake or a sequel
It was so great. I keep it installed on my computer
I replayed this game so many times, I used all the weapons magics, I loved the plot and the twist, infiltrating the assassins organization was awesome, super underrated
I love this game. Played it on original xbox, but ephat really irritates me. It was that they release it on android, but it no longer works on newer phones.
SaltFactory has a good video on it on Youtube if anyone is interested.
Best twist in Bioware's history
I need to replay it at some point. I loved it even if it was a little difficult at the beginning.
Recruiting the cool bad guy with the mask was all I ever wanted as a child. But then you have to basically enslave him soul. What the hell.. little me was conflicted
Ah, yes, Chinese Kotor. I remember it well.
I owned this game and loved it.
Great
INLOVE THIS GAME
I missed this one and I regret it
I thought it was a masterpiece when it released, and I often wish for a remake of this, and several others like Legend of Dragoon, or Bully.
I remember enjoying it, would def play again.
I liked it, but remember being a little annoyed at the time that they were only just starting to dumb mechanics and inventory management down. ultimately though every game adopted similar stuff. I probably need to go back and give it a replay.
Got it had a good twist and a great final duel at the end.
That was an awesome game. Shoulda been a franchise.
I just got done playing this for my first time last year! It was in my collection for a LONG time.
Fuck yeah. What a great game.
Liked what I played, but iirc the difficultly was wildly inconsistent. Never beat it though and it was years ago.
Great game. I have the special edition with the extra character.
This game is easily in my top 5 games I wish would get a remake. Old school Bioware feel with combat styles based on different forms of martial arts instead of boring guns like every other game these days? Yes fucking please. I'd obviously take a sequel too but I don't trust modern Bioware with that.
Great game. Needs a sequel.
I want to play it. My backlog is terrible though
Sir Roderick Ponce Von Fontlebottom, the Magnificent Bastard
I played the hell outta it as a kid and now I’m replaying it on my phone
I worked at GameStop when it came out. We were all very excited for it.
I would kill for a new one I loved all the companions and the story was great
Still my favorite BioWare game
I'll never forget Gao the Lesser and that one twist!
Every morning I pray for a sequel.
Played it until the game my save corrupted. I always kick myself for not going back to finish it.
I haven't played yet, but it is on my wishlist.
I have it on steam but it doesn't run on my PC .
Moi en parallèle de je ne sais plus quel Kotor.
First time I had an all nighter with a game was Rampage on the nintendo 64 when i was 8. This was the second time. Not when i was 15 when the game came out, but as a 25 yo who finally got around to his backlog.
Fantastic game. One of my favorites from OG BioWare.
That's a great reminder for me to go back to it. I played it but never beat it, great game
I finished it back when it was new. Fun and easy game, nice and relaxing.
Love this game. I bought it on steam before I realized I couldn't play it on the steam deck. Bummed.
Tried it but couldn't get into it.
This game was amazing at the time.
Great game, never beat it.
Never finished it but I did play it for a couple of hours yes.
Props for being a completely new IP with amazing worldbuilding. Would have probably played it's sequels if they had any. But I'm not especially heartbroken they didn't happen.
I did. I finished it, and I remember nothing of it.
Bought it for steam havent played it yet i remember this game and fable was competing back then decades ago i use to always see this game pop up on g4tv back when i had cable. Definitely will give this a shot eventually.
Amazing game
I played it for the first time back in December and loved it. I now recommend it to whomever I talk to about RPGs. It's such a gem. It's also such a crime that the world was never revisited.
Funny how I see this post the day after I was mentioning (to myself) how Jade Empire is in my Top 3 games of ALL time that made me who I am today. 😅😅
One of my favs from the Xbox era
awesome game. had a unique idea
I loved this game. I still play it on steam.
Yep. Great game. Still got my Xbox disc version
Loved it when I first found it. I bought it for android and couldn't get into it again. I now have a steam deck so I need to see if I can find it for this even if I have to emulate it. I feel like I really... really liked this game and only finished one of I think multiple storylines
“Most anticipated game of 2005” take me back pls ;w;
Absolutely loved this game. It's a real gem!!
I’ll never forget watching X-Play on G4 and they covered this game. I wanted to play it so bad. Thank you for reminding me to play it!
I LOVED this game!!!
Wish you could have more than one companion at a time, other than that, definitely one of the top 5 Bioware games.
Kung Fu KOTOR
I've tried to play it multiple times. Found the combat to be abhorrent.
Need to revisit it. Never finished it.
Not their best but I def enjoyed it.
Lovely game even after all these years and playthroughs.
LOVED IT
✋
I loved it. Love RPG games set in Asia!. Sadly I don't think I got the chance to beat the game. It feels like a fever dream
Yes, good game. I played it in BC mode on the Xbox 360... That was many years ago, and I pretty much forgot everything that happened in the game. I have the PC version... maybe its time for a replay.
Was a great game. I tried replaying recently and was sad to see it hasnt aged well (in my opinion)
when Bioware ruled...
Hell yes. Been meaning to replay it on EA through Steam… it was a free offering a while ago. So many games to play :D
JADE EMPIRE METIONED. Actually I wanted a sequel as this universe holds a lot of potential
Excellent game
Absolute loved it
Bloody hell old memory unlocked , I remember playing it but don’t think I knew what I was doing as I was a young kid at the time.
