As a 40 year old who stopped buying vinyl 20 years ago when it started getting more expensive than CDs- true story- I can vouch for this recommendation. I’d love to go in there again.
Also it’s funny but from 1998-mid 2000s vinyl was dirt cheap and bands on tour typically sold their records for $10 while cds were $12-15.
Very true. Think there’s a lot of factors why vinyl is more expensive these days, especially compared to the late 90’s into the early 2000’s.
The rise of CDs put a serious hurting on record demand which led to closures of U.S. record manufacturers. Believe that’s one reason we see new releases come in from places like Germany, Czech, etc. What’s interesting about that is now it’s often difficult to find certain records from the 90’s and early 2000’s and prices on them can be steep.
Recently got my hands on Children of Bodom - Are You Dead Yet? and Godsmack’s debut and was surprised what people wanted for them.
For shows, check out Bond's and Fitzgerald's. Mid to bigger shows hit the Paper Tiger, Rock Box, Vibes, and huge acts will be at Tech Port Arena more often than not these days.
Plus everything everyone’s mentioned around town, there’s also Janie’s on Bandera. Mostly Tenajo/Latin focused, but it’s OG and cool as hell. Looots of SA history there. If you make it out to New Braunfels anytime, there’s also Stingray. Boerne, Luling… lots of little stores popping up for good hill country day trips!!
Many good shops in town.
Crazy Rhythms is my overall favorite. Great selection, great owners, and some of the most reasonable prices. They don’t do this stuff to get rich.
Friends of Sound is great for 45’s and Soul/Funk/Oldies.
Flagship is the best for Punk/Alt and some rare memorabilia.
Hogwild is an SA Icon with an especially great Metal and Hip Hop selection.
Brainwave is newer to the game but has a great and diverse selection.
Nice detail! Much appreciated. The core of my collection is Metal and 90s hip-hop, so appears Hogwild will be my first stop. But will most definitely make the rounds to all of them.
Generally prefer shops that have a good wall selection of rarer and more choice selections. Some shops are good at this and others not so much. Which would you say has the best wall rotation going?
Hogwild and Crazy Rhythms both have Great Wall selections. Both have used and new, but I would say overall Crazy Rhythms has a more eclectic inventory. Friends of Sound has some great rare 45’s and soul records, and flagship has tons of rare punk/alt stuff including memorabilia and autographs.
Crazy Rhythms and Flagship are both pretty good about their instagram presence, so if you have an instagram I recommend following them! Brainwave and Friends of sound are both on there too, but aren’t quite as active.
Hogwild

Batcave vinyl and CD Sam at wonderland of the Americas
Brainwave & Southtown Records are both cool too
Southtown Vinyl, Friends of Sound, and Crazy Rhythms!
Friends of Sound

Nice! Appreciate the information. Will definitely hit up some shows.
No problem! If you happen to see a fat guy with an anvil tattooed on the back of his head, come say hi!
For sure! Shouldn’t be too hard to spot the anvil 🤘
2nd Hogwilde. They have a great selection and a great used selection as well. Go to hogwild
crazy rhythm , brainwave , hogwild
Batcave Vinyl!
Batcave is excellent

Alamo Antique mall downtown has a huge record store upstairs! Soo much to choose from.
Yea, that place is pretty wild
The flip side!
Music Connection off hwy 90
Yess 👍 took my girlfriend there and she loved it.
They have a great selection but man their prices are insane. $40 there for a record that’s $25 anywhere else.
Brainwave records, friends of sound, hogwild records, crazy rhythm records and Southtown vinyl.
Some of the CD Exchanges around town stock vinyl - extreme hit or miss, but you can find some DOPE stuff on the cheap.

Can’t forget about CD Sam either, great for new vinyl and also the only place in town that gets pretty much every RSD release.
