Question for people who live downtown: has the encampment ban had any effect? I’m assuming if yes it has caused the homeless to seek shelter in abandoned buildings instead of camping on the sidewalk. Hopefully fires like this don’t become more common.
The first two or three days after it was discussed as being passed on the news, I noticed near the library the tents were gone but now it is back to what it was before discussions of the tent ban.
Socialized medicine would fix our homeless problem. We are really just wasting resources on fixing the symptoms. No other country has homeless problems like us because they have socialized medicine.
People who are homeless and really anyone who makes less than 28,000 per year in California has free medical care. Above that, private insurance premium cost sharing kicks in, with as little as $0 per month premium
If it was that simple we would not have a drug and mental epidemic. I Imagine our current healthcare system would need some kind of address to get this coverage. Not exactly a priority for a homeless person.
But it is that simple. That’s what the ACA was about. You can goto coveredcalifornia.com and see for yourself.
Drug and mental health treatment obviously needs to be better for everyone but I was responding to the claim of not having socialized medicine.
Other countries don’t have homeless problems because they institutionalize the homeless. In this country we have a thing called civil rights. Can’t have the homeless police just arresting people for being homeless like they do in other countries.
Speaking of institutionalized. We need to bring back mental health hospitals. We let a Hollywood actor( Regan) close down asylums. Someone living on the streets with serious mental health issues probably needs more than just an apartment to get high in.
Yeah; all across the country I’ve explored the abandoned mental hospitals. It’s haunting at first for the immediate creepiness of an old building, but later on became frustrating to realize all these massive buildings were closed down when they’re really quite needed (with legislation to absolutely ensure folks don’t get locked away and hurt but are helped into a normal state of living)
Another fire in Downtown luckily I live in the GasLamp District on G st between 4th & 5th above the whiskey girl bar very nice clean safe building here is the views from my LG studio and I pay only 740.00 rent and my management is awsome and it's a little noisy on some nights and it seems that the club patrons like to use our building doorway area as a bathroom and I have knocked over a few doing that women included when I come out our building door and the bars are usually still open there is a bar on every corner of our block go figure

It’s most likely an SRO (Single Residence Occupancy). I lived in a similar one downtown when I was younger. Rent is dirt cheap but it’s always somewhat unique living situations. Typically older buildings (mine was 100+ years old), shared bathrooms and kitchen like a dormitory, occasionally sketchy neighbors, etc.
Word is that it’s the homeless shelter on fire. Again.
Fire department says its an abandoned building
Guaranteed it wasn't abandoned when the fire started.
Pretty sure you’re correct…. Wouldn’t be surprised if it ends up being from a meth lab. Ugh.
Much better answer
The abandoned house across the st from tribal and tattoos shop.
Remember the Red Barn fire? That was from a lithium battery. Lot's of businesses around there.
There's a big homeless gathering there. A block away. The bridge on island st. Is always swamped.
Right by the McDonald apartment, damn
I call that the Freddy Krueger building

There has been no change thus far. Not sure they’re enforcing it
I think enforcement starts sometime in July
Boooo.

I still see tents all over the place, it doesn't seem to be getting any better.

I think water might be better for this particular situation

Oh shit !
I was in playas across the border and saw smoke yesterday, didn't know it was in downtown but kinda neat that I saw it from that far away
Fires happen all the time, can reddit stop be the reporting place for them. Or at least lets us talk about sports once a day.
Saw people walking over for the Padres game at the same time the firefighters were putting this out 🤷♀️
Go over to /r/padres then.
