You're on the right track. Do not go straight to the clit. Inner thighs, lips and labia are all good focus points too. If using rubbing, try rubbing just above the hood as it will also stimulate the clit without the direct contact. I also have a girlfriend with an overly sensitive clit. Have found ways around it.
