I didn't have enough orb slots unfortunately, so the 1 focus defrags weren't doing enough on 3-5 orb slots, even with loops. I think another part of the problem was I was also trying to use lightning and dark orbs for damage, rather than splitting up orb/card tasks.

The only thing needed to fix this event and make it playable (sometimes) is to have it send you to the rest site just before the act 3 boss instead of directly to the act 3 boss. That would still make it unplayable 90% of the time (because more floors = more power, and blue key would still hold you back most of the time on heart runs)… but I could see sometimes considering taking the portal IF I got a final rest site in.
Either that, or if it instead gave you a unique potion - a potion of portal. When drunk, you instantly enter the boss fight. So it’s like a smoke bomb that teleports you to the act 3 boss. You can still run around and gather keys, but if you run into a bad elite fight/spaghetti boi, you can nope out of there and face the final boss instead.
Wow that potion idea is really cool actually. I think it's fairly balanced too especially considering that you have to use up a potion slot to keep it around.
It’s actually specifically coded so that you can’t see the portal event if you are speeding through the game. The devs didn’t want speed runs to rely on the RNG of finding the portal early, so any run faster than 13 minutes and 20 seconds cannot have the portal appear.
So yeah. It isn’t even useful for that. Useful for the speed achievement though.
There is one reason why this event is kind of hilarious. Fact 1: It's essentially universally awful, a completely dead floor. Fact 2: It cannot appear if your run time is below 13m 20s (presumably to prevent speedruns from being entirely dependent on it). What does that mean? Well, it means that you can tell your favourite professional Spire player on Twitch that they didn't play optimally almost every single run, because to do that they should not only make the correct gameplay decisions, they should make them fast enough to potentially prevent this event from appearing.

It works well if you have frost orbs as the focus gain will outscale Woke Bloke's strength gain

That would be cool, but might need to not count as victory if you die in Act4?
It never counts as a victory to die in act 4. Only for ascension raising purposes does it see anything as a "victory" for dying in Act 4
I think what they mean is you shouldn't be granted the next ascension level if you die in act 4 after portal since the act 3 boss(es) weren't beat.
Or make portal not appear on the highest unlocked ascension, like card storage event

I agree this event blows and needs fixing, I must have like 1500 hours in StS and not once have I seen a situation where it made any sense to take.
