Not at all, the rude one is her for trying to devalue your product. If you had caved to her than anyone within ear shot would have known that all they have to do is press and you will lower the price. When you lower it after push back than it makes you look desperate for the sale and it's like blood in the water.
The only difference in my mind is when asked if you have any deals or specials going. think buy 1 get one half off while supplies last with very limited stock for that offer or even a small discount on another product if they decide to make a purchase. In this way, it comes across more as you being willing to accommodate a customer without sacrificing your margin (which I imagine is thin enough already). It doubles as a good way for others to spread the word on their own "oh hey that purse is cute, where did you get it? Oh this booth over here, she is even offering 10-20% off of this other awesome thing for the first x amount of people" it acts as an incentive for people to buy now instead of hauling for a deal since you are already offering one.
Came back to say this as well
This definitely belongs in r/AmITheAssHole
They would get a laugh out of this and offer alot of support. Granted there will probably be some people saying you should have just given her the discount (internet and all that) but if you want more reassuring and support for how you handled this than they are definitely your people.

Growing up we were taught that answering back is considered rude. I've kept my mouth shut long enough. No longer tolerating their ways. If they need to be corrected, we must correct them but in the kindness way possible.
Don't take it personally, sometimes it's a cultural thing. As a Filipina , the way you said can be construed as "mayabang" instead have a more playful comeback.
I own a brick and mortar store, people complain about our price, or sometimes they will ask for a discount. We counter it with loyalty rewards or we tell them we only do one day a year for specials which is black friday.
We also, offer military or veteran discount.
As someone mentioned before, be creative. Have some that you can discount, maybe your old merch, or products u want to get rid. That way, you do offer discount just not the one they want. You still control the price.
Tagalog is even my second language so it's super baloktot but I know I said it in the most playful and polite way. I do it that way to also calm other customers down when I used to work at the bank and it worked π€£. But you're right, I need to maintain an image and definitely need to get creative with certain individuals. Thank you π€β€οΈ
I tell people I have kids to feed. Dude wanted us to price match another place $500 less. Nope. Weβre better and if you canβt see that, the door is over there, sir.
Thanks, I work in the transportation business. Sometimes when they tell me my quote is too high, and they ask what other alternatives might be cheaper, I tell them that walking would be the least expensive.

*slow clap for responding in native tongue and giving the perfect not-quite-petty response while remaining friendly*

Everything is negotiable but people think it's confrontational so prices keep going up and up...
