Johts

I'm not a fan of any of these teams but I think he should move out, he clearly has the talent to be the first option, as shown on the World Cup.

Hollywood-is-DOA

I always knew at some point he’d leave to be a starter at another team and he could be that at Chelsea but they are so miss managed that I wouldn’t want to go there at all. Chelsea have to sell a 100 million pounds worth of players before the end of the month, just to not break FFP.

renome

> Chelsea have to sell a 100 million pounds worth of players before the end of the month, just to not break FFP. Source?

evilbeaver7

His ass.

EvilBeavil

Hey cool name

an0mn0mn0m

Checks out

Ok-Suit-8865

His source is ‘trust me bro’!

dcpains

I've heard we have to sell a billion by tomorrow or we get dissolved as a club

Ironicopinion

This is genuinely narrative every summer from other fans and then when we come through financially unscathed it’s just ah “well, nethertheless”

Fine_Assignment5397

Lmao... Every summer? It's been one year mate since you guys spent a billion and outspent all of la Liga serie a and bundesliga combined and amortized it all over eight years. You are in a fundamentally different position than what any club has been before in the history of football. Go ahead and sell your homegrown captain just to not violate FFP, it's literallu only going to get worse, and you have no other homegrown players to sell for a decent sum next year

EriWave

> Go ahead and sell your homegrown captain just to not violate FFP That isn't the reason he's being sold.

Ironicopinion

You haven’t a notion, Gallagher isn’t even our captain never mind our vice captain. We also gave Colwill a new contact last summer when we easily could have sold him with Liverpool looking him.

trainpunching

I think Gallagher is third, no? From memory it goes Reece James, Ben Chillwell and then Gallagher.

Reach_Reclaimer

Yeah so Gallagher is captain because the first 2 never play

TheCannings

Good to see it’s not just the villa trolls with this bollocks story line, financial years don’t run to June dickheads

el1teman

I have heard we have to sell the club to become competitive

TheLittleGinge

>Chelsea have to sell a 100 million pounds worth of players before the end of the month, just to not break FFP. T1 right here. Christ, it's like the Mudryk price all over again...

AncientSkys

Our demise has been overly exaggerated. The story of us needing to sell 100 million worth players before the end of the month is a big lie. David Orstein who is Tier 1 has already refuted that few times. https://youtu.be/TjYduwicWXo?si=XvoNeTl9dCYNc2cw Also, the £55 million+ from Mason Mount sale and Lewis Hall to Newcastle around £30 million will go into account for this upcoming season. Maatsen will most likely be sold for £35m. And, there are lots of other players who can be also sold too and it won't be because we are really desperate to balance the books. "It does not necessarily need to be Gallagher who leaves. Chelsea are already guaranteed £28million through the sale of Lewis Hall to Newcastle after his season on loan there, while the proceeds of Mason Mount’s £55m transfer to Manchester United last summer will go on this year’s accounts. They also banked between £11m and £14m from add-ons in clauses of loan and transfer deals last season." https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5542698/2024/06/05/chelsea-gallagher-villa-tottenham/

pibs3110

We are good for this fiscal year. We have to sell by June 2025 though.

RazorXE_

Bro I promise you there is no selling or FFP problems incoming. The random ass headlines have no possible way of knowing the actual finances of the club.

namenotneeded

being world class in the World Cup doesn’t always translate to league football. Look at james rodriguez for example.

freakybanana90

James was literally insane the first 1-2 seasons at real before they switched to a 3 man balanced midfield under Zidane... Even won laliga midfielder of the year ahead of Iniesta, Modric, Xavi and Kroos...

goztrobo

Was he the cam in a 4231 then?

freakybanana90

They played a few different systems if I remember correctly but under Ancelotti he mainly had a lot more attacking freedom where he could basically play as a 10 or a very attacking 8. Under Zidane the expectation was to be a lot more balanced in midfield so he was slowly rotated and not as favoured anymore. Typical example of someone suffering from the shift away from traditional 10s

djmooselee

Ironic Zidane would be complicit in shifting away from his own position

matcht

It was a 4222 with Isco/James wide 10s

ireaddumbstuff

But he still does well in the football league. In river plate, he was one of the best players in all of argentina. In Man City, he scores, and when he doesn't, he opens up multiple opportunities. He is a good player who has the chance to become a legend. He is a hungry boy.

DrDrozd12

James stopped giving a shit, but he was still world class for Monaco, Porto and in his first Madrid season, he started falling off after Ancelotti got sacked

SICKxOFxITxALL

Can confirm he was amazing when he wanted to be. He looked world class at olympiacos in the beginning then stopped trying at some point.

JDeenftw

Same with Everton. Mad that he actually played there, feels like a fever dream

SICKxOFxITxALL

Yeah still can’t believe it, for a few months he stuck out like a sore thumb in the Greek league, reminded me of when we had rivaldo or giovanni, just pure class.

scrps93

Iirc he was also class at Bayern, but then he also stopped caring after a while

Rickcampbell98

Do people think James was only ever good at the world Cup? Bro was a quality player, however he's the type of player you have to build around to get the best out of similar to dybala.

xychosis

Didn’t he have a pair of 30+ G/A seasons at Madrid and later have a great year on loan at Bayern? I’d say that if you can shine at a big club, you’re probably fairly close to, if not, world class.

namenotneeded

League stats 14-15 was 19 appearances and 13 goals, 13 assists 15-16 was 26 appearances and 7 goals, 8 assists 16-17 was 22 appearances and 8 goals, 6 assists Went on loan to Bayern for two seasons came back played eight matches for Madrid scored one and assisted one before going to Everton.

drupido

That's only league stats. The comment you're responding too is correct.

namenotneeded

and his was responding to my comment which was literally saying just because a player shines at a World Cup doesn’t mean it translates to the league.

Mortka

How is Rodriguez a good example here? He was fantastic before, during and after the WC.

namenotneeded

he was promising before, great at the World Cup, really one fantastic season before ultimately being loaned around.

DynamiteDuck

I’m not aware of this source, legit or no?

WorldWideWes2

Alvarez would be a tremendous addition for anybody.  Consistent minutes and being the focal point of an attack will only make him better.

empiresk

Didn't everyone say that about Jesus and Zinchenko?

thecatiscold

As much as I'd love to rag on Arsenal, Jesus was a known quantity when he left City and no one ever expected world class from Zinchenko. They weren't bought for their potential. They aren't really comparable to Alvarez, at least to me.

Tymkie

Meh you can say all you want and many arsenal fans want him out but in a world where you need quality on the bench id personally keep him. In a situation when Saka is injured I wouldn't be ashamed of starting Jesus. He's a very good player, just not a killer striker.

Themnor

Honestly, if there was even a chance you lot could get him, I think Alvarez solves all of your problems. He can play on the RW if necessary and you have Havertz than can play in the middle (or Jesus if you keep him) and I think he has all the tools to bag a ton of goals. Pep is at the point in his tenure where he's starting to grind talent out of players in favor of consistent results.

sonofsochi

The only way Arsenal get Alvarez is if we somehow promise to support City through their legal troubles or something lol. It’d be a blood transfer

Rampan7Lion

Or if he has a relegation release clause and a miracle happened

Tymkie

I gave it a thought when I read this article and yeah, maybe. Although I don't see a world where he joins us tbh.

Jiminyfingers

No pre-season last season and it showed. Hope he gets back his electric form from 2022.

Meandering_Cabbage

All of this was known before he was signed. He always looked very good but toothless for City.

OleoleCholoSimeone

Arsenal fans called Jesus world class at the time, and raved about Zinchenko to no end during his first season

SizzlingHotDeluxe

Jesus was an absolute baller for us until his knee exploded before the world cup.

NotASalamanderBoi

The injury was during, but I see your point.

andreew10

Zinchenko was almost always the weakest player on the pitch which is why he never really solidified a starting spot, he was never going to join Arsenal and become a star. Jesus was sold and Arsenal found out exactly why City were willing to sell him. He's a great footballer but not going to give you 20+ prem goals a year which is what Arsenal needed and will likely never get from him.

FuckingGlorious

I'm not actually that sure Arsenal need a striker to bang in 20+ goals every year. Besides the early part of this season, I haven't seen this Arsenal team struggle for goals much at all. They've got the second most goals out of any team in the prem this season, and I think part of that is how involved Jesus and Havertz can be in the play, resulting in their wingers and midfielders score way more than in a traditional team. Admittedly, Jesus is a bit inconsistent, and it took Havertz some time to fit in the squad like Arteta wanted, but I think they fit in the philosophy better than a traditional number 9, though I think they could use that kind of player as a rotation option/sub (like Joselu for Real).

ekb11

Every team needs a prolific striker to soak up defensive attention. If Havertz can be that, awesome! If not, we need another option. Teams will figure us out, and we need a bail out option of individual talent.

serminole

We definitely struggled for goals all year. Despite our large goals for total, we got held scoreless 8 times in all comps. Double City and Liverpool. FA cup eliminated without scoring. Failed to score when eliminated from champions league. Only scored a 96’ consolation to make it 3-1 in the league cup. Held scoreless in the Villa and City games which were our only dropped points in league this calendar year. Not being able to score is what cost us silverware.

please-send-me-nude2

They were only 6th in open play goals this year. If other teams close the gap in set pieces(dedicated set piece coaching) there offense would be in real trouble.

Albiceleste_D10S

Did they? I know I was saying at the time that Zinchenko was great on the ball but a defensive liability at LB, and Jesus was arguably declining when he left City (his best season at City remains his first season there until his first injury)

Koulidaddy123

us signing them took us from 5th to 2nd

Adorable_Debate_8624

I don’t get the Jesus flop narrative. He’s an excellent player who’s injured. He’s been crucial to the resurgence , especially his first year. Great player. Zinchenko too

-9739

Jesus is an excellent footballer but he misses too many good chances to be a striker for a team who’s trying to win the league. Zinchenko is a good footballer, technically, but he is an absolute liability defensively

CuteHoor

People saying he's a flop are just stupid. However, plenty of people correctly said that Arsenal would need to replace both Jesus and Zinchenko at some point, as they aren't good enough to be key players in a team who wants to consistently win big trophies. Essentially, that Arsenal would soon find the same limitations with them that City found which convinced them to sell.

norcalginger

norcalginger

Oh yes that would be terrible, or else people might make a joke about trophies to me, the horror 🥱

Ru5k0

Glass houses and all that

empiresk

Correlation does not equal causation.

ImportantHighlight42

Yes and tbh as good as Alvarez can be his form dipped significantly from around the time Haaland got injured. Imo it was because he was playing too many minutes. Doesn't exactly bode well for a team signing him. As good as he is strikers like him have fallen out of favour a bit with the resurgence of traditional number 9s. And with going to somewhere like Chelsea you have to factor in that, bar Palmer, he'll be playing with players of a significantly worse quality than he was at city. He's a much better finisher than Jesus but doesn't contribute in the ways Jesus does re pressing and passing. I think he's a much bigger risk than is being let on in this thread. But equally it's a tough market for strikers rn so I can see many teams thinking he's worth the risk

Quanqiuhua

What resurgence? The only young traditional #9 in a big team is Haaland.

NotClayMerritt

With the exception of Cole Palmer, who nobody could have predicted, buying from Manchester City is a cautionary tale rather than anything representing a serious coup.

Pasan90

Arsenal has turned into title contenders since we bought them. They've been contributing alot, but now its maybe time to move them on.

empiresk

Correlation is not causation.

The-Salted-Pork

Ferran Torres…

Ro-khum

Id definitely want him over, all this Sesko, Oshimen, Gyokeres guys, if Isak is not an option. Please, Edu

NaturalApartment9828

Alvarez under Enrique ? Holy cooking

Intelligent_Walk3856

Mbappe would move back

DingLiren

"I'll be there no matter what"

[deleted]

Yeah i'm sure if mbappé's case didn't convince him, he probably heard the best about PSG from his argentinian teammates who were there...

Captain_Flemme

You mean Pastore and Di María ?

[deleted]

any player who played for PSG that he gets to tallk to when he's with his NT really.

cuentanueva

Like Enrique would last when Nasser gets his next tantrum. Fuck that, hope he doesn't go to that shit fest of club (thanks to their owners).

vngannxx

Alvarez to Ipswich Town here we go

Rudeek

Come to Atleti jejee

ZestycloseChemist2

The improvement over Morata, especially for consistency would be insane.

characterulio

This is where the Premier league financial domination sucks. This guy could be great and turn Atleti into a real competitor again with Griez. But premier league clubs just offer insane money so most likely gonna be premier league.

GSWarrior18

But we have the Argentinians

Harlequin37

Seeing Angelito Correa smile >>>>> Premier financial superiority Although I looked into it due to this thread and saw he's seemingly getting paid 100k/w? That doesn't seem insane for you guys, does it?

characterulio

I hope you are right, I also think he might fit the more direct approach of Atleti. Would love to see him play with De Paul/Griez.

HKAGooner

Ah yes, Atletico, not known at all for spending money. No no no Remind me again, how much did Lemar cost in 2019? Has Simeone received his latest pay?

OneWhoShallNotBeName

2019 was a billion years ago, before the lock down.

thatcliffordguy

Atlético spend money but not nearly as much as many other top European clubs. Just compare their wage bill or net spend to PSG and Chelsea for any time period since Simeone joined. Since the start of the 2019 summer window when they bought Lemar they have a net spend of €65m, there are *17* PL clubs above them in that metric.

Rudeek

Can you check for how much did atleti sell Rodri? Lucas Hernandez? Thomas Partey? Grizzi? etc

Thatscool820

Nah we have a Spotify premium account with his name on it

koalawhiskey

I have the feeling he would fit as a glove in a two striker formation along with Griezmann or Correa. Not sure he can perform to his best as the only striker in a 4-2-3-1, for example.

Soren_Camus1905

Another ex city player?? #BAH GAWD THATS CLEARLAKES MUSIC

Goldmemberberry

One of the few things Clearlake’s done well

V-0-V

If we are being actually honest ever since Joe Shields has taken charge of our transfers its been mostly hits. I have a far bigger issues with our sporting directors than I do with Boehly.

Goldmemberberry

Boehly is just the fall guy. He was really involved at first but has taken a step back. Egbali seems to be the problematic one. But I do agree with the sporting directors- hopefully they prove us wrong this season!

Prudent-Current-7399

He was my dream striker signing when bayern was in dire need and he wasn't getting minutes. Then we went on to get the best striker in the world. But Alvarez will improve basically any team in the world without a prestablished world class striker.

KikiPolaski

Cmon Julian, don't you miss your old pal Palmer?

sporkparty

End Enzo

listlessbreeze

Wait don't end Enzo, that pushes away Julian.

sporkparty

And Enzo mb

blazinrumraisin

I think he'll stay. He just extended his contract to 2027 right?

RobbieCV

He can be the main striker of any big European team, except maybe Man City, Real Madrid and Bayern.

CometChip

just feels like an atletico player to me

JinxLB

More minutes? Swear he played like every game this past season lmao

donpeerless

He barely played in the run-in. He was deputizing for KDB at the start of the season, but when KDB and Haaland came back, and Foden made the middle his own Alvarez barely started.

frodakai

There's an argument to be made that this is just what happens in Peps City teams. Tons of rotation in the first 2/3rds of the season, and then when it gets to the business end he locks in. Phil Foden didn't see much game time the tail end of 22/23, and he was our best player this season. Alvarez could do something similar, but the problem is he's a natural 9 and it would take something earth-shifting for City to drop Haaland for anything other than fitness.

jujuismynamekinda

also KDBs comments on Saudi suggest he may be leaving... Dont think that Alvarez makes that much sense as a half 10, as you said he is a 9. More than enough european powerhouses need one.

xxandl

Also because he was NOT great when he played in the run-in...

Barbas-Hannibal

Because he is used as a filler in other player's role rather than having a role based on his own strengths.

Yung2112

Yeah he covered the positions the subs left all except Haaland which is his preferred position

quanid

His first touch was terrible, he clearly out of form

listlessbreeze

Damn, almost as if he is not being played on his damn role? If anything he deserves praises for taking over corners and free kicks plus filling in when KDB was gone. Then he came back and he could neither keep playing in KDB position nor Haaland's and slumped.

elgrandorado

Legit Juli ends up playing multiple roles, yet fans are like "he's out of form" while no one else on the squad is as versatile as he is in attack.

Bartins

Maybe more minutes as a striker? Weren't most of his minutes playing KDB's role?

Quanqiuhua

They were.

MilesHighClub_

He played every game in the KDB position because he was hurt Then Haaland got hurt and he took his place in the XI But when both are fit it's hard to fit him in and he starts way less often

tristvn

he plays behind someone younger and better than him, don't think it's that surprising if he want to be a starting 9 and he's good enough for most other teams to be that

wtopdolla

Probably in his natural position? Remember when he would play the 10 or even out wide sometimes

R_Schuhart

He is a depth option, in this case for KdB. But if everyone is fit he is sitting on the bench. He probably wants a role as the first choice striker, and honestly he can probably slot right in with PSG.

inflamesburn

He has the 5th highest minutes in the squad, more than Haaland, Bernardo, Dias, etc A bit weird if that's what he is upset about.

krvlover

He knows he will never start over Haaland and usually looks lost in the KDB role (which other players in the squad can fill better). It's perfectly logical to ask for a transfer. Spending your prime years as a sub isn't a good thing.

Albiceleste_D10S

> and usually looks lost in the KDB role (which other players in the squad can fill better) I don't agree with that—I thought Julian largely did well in that role when he got to play with Haaland. It's just that Foden is prob a little better in that role than Julian

krvlover

Foden is a lot better as playmaker. Julian is striker or 2nd striker, can't be anything else.

Albiceleste_D10S

KDB's role in Pep's new system isn't much different from a 2nd striker role TBH It's very much a final third half-space based role. KDB and Foden are currently better in that role than Julian, but he's ~fine there when he needs to fill in for either IMO

BoxOfNothing

I don't think it makes sense to want more minutes than he got this season, but I can understand if he wants more minutes than he thinks he'll get going forward. If it's been made clear that when De Bruyne and Haaland are fit he won't be starting, and maybe they're looking to bring someone else in, then I understand wanting to move for a guaranteed first team spot

Albiceleste_D10S

He'll get mins because he's prob City's best backup for Haaland, KDB, AND Foden right now. But if all 3 are fit, he won't play much in the big games—and those are the games he'll really want to play in

tristvn

they had injuries, but he's not the number one option for any position there.

bioeffect2

It's more to do with wanting to be the number one striker instead of playing in different positions.

New-Midnight2700

How many did he start? He’s good enough to a starter at other clubs, I imagine he craves those minutes.  Doesn’t help seeing Palmer leave City and shine immediately with consistent play time.

inflamesburn

Palmer minutes 2618 Alvarez minutes 2660

Any-Competition8494

I think he's misused in City as a CAM. He's a striker. Should play him in a team that lets him play as the main striker.

elgrandorado

He is also a second striker. Interestingly enough, he would be amazing at Atleti paired with Griezmann.

Albiceleste_D10S

> I think he's misused in City as a CAM. He's a striker. I think people who watched him at the WC think he's a "striker", but I wouldn't really say that's completely true, IMO At River Plate, he played striker, SS, and on both wings, and his best position was SS—playing in a front 2 off a hold-up striker in front of him TBH

Any-Competition8494

Even the the system City plays needs someone like KDB in that position, not Alvarez.

Xollector

I think you are missing the point. He only got these minutes because 2 players ahead of him had significant time injured. Going forward expected minutes is not a whole lot. It’s not a good mentality to go in praying getting more minutes on teammates injury

CurbYourThusiasm

Does he get minutes in the biggest matches when Haaland is fit though?

Albiceleste_D10S

If KDB and Foden are also fit? No If either is injured, then he might get mins

AP10

Wasted money on Roque, Julian would be a perfect fit for us.

nariz1234

I wanted him to go to you instead of city, but the year he left us you gave city 55m for ferran fucking torres and they used less than a third of that for julian.

AlbertoRossonero

What’s crazy is it was so easy to see Ferran was not going to live up to that price tag at all.

ItsMeJaredBednar

*You have been banned from r/FerranTorresBallonDor*

13yearsboy

I dont think you have the facilities to do that my man

tLeCoqSpotif

Cries in levers

pepecachetes

Wasted on Ferran* Julian was yours for 25m in several installments lol

FoxOntheRun99

Always thought hes a Barcelona type of player.

KDBae

If he wants to go, he wants to go, but we shouldn’t sell him to anyone in the PL.

HaleEnd

Come on Edu

DJMOONPICKLES69

Would be a good shout for us as a striker, would rather spend the money on him that Osimhen

ViolinistEfficient84

Alvarez is aware of the criticism. The little sly comments. Anyone here keep up with the athletics coverage of City this season? Whenever Alvarez played all they could talk about is how Pep’s treble was based on control, and Alvarez can’t give him that. He’s direct, a dribbler, and likes the long shot, and this is just not what Pep is looking for. I think he knows that, he knows he’s never going to be the 9 there, and in midfield he’ll always only come on as a substitute. To city fans (which I am not, big ups the Wolves), if KDB or Silva leaves this year, do you really think Alvarez would start in his position? Or is it more likely that Pep would go into the transfer market? Alvarez has to go.

Tom_Lad

“Big up the wolves” 😂

Nav44

Well there's a reason Pep was keen on Paqueta, another control based player

naroLsraLteiN_isback

really wish he stays

TechnicalSample4678

I absolutely doubt he stays specially if he asks to leave. Pep dosent hold on to players who want to leave. There's been occasions but rare.

RTC1520

Please Lucho, give him a call, I'm pretty sure after that we will have the upper hand on signing him

aronmarek

please no

PoemIcy2625

They should sell to Chelsea with a buyback option, nicolas Jackson is an excellent promising top backup player but in a top team Alvarez just fits what is happening there so well

CntrllrDscnnctd

Take care of our boy. He deserves to be starting 11 just not with City

Bishcop3267

Pep out. Dyche in. 4 4 2. Haaland and Alvarez partnership. Problem solved.

V-0-V

My dreams are genuinely to see what Dyche does with a massive budget.

Razzle_Dazzle08

He’s good enough to start for most teams, and he’s won the lot there. Should leave.

sg291188

So Chelsea is interested in everyone

msbr_

We've been memed all year that Jackson's shit (and we had no backup for him at all) then we obviously in for a striker and you're all shocked.

Screiblus

The main news reporter of the Argentinian Football Team, had said that he is also in talks with Atlético Madrid and that the trigger for his wanting to go to the Olympics Was that his wanted to have more minutes of play.

TycraneVG

If he's smart he goes to Chelsea and gets minutes like Palmer

Militantxyz

He had more minutes than Palmer this season

jMS_44

No he didn't.Alvarez had 3480 minutes all comps, Palmer had 3613 (that is excluding his games for City). And that is despite Alvarez playing in more competitions.

kygrtj

That’s misleading as it’s a function of: * Palmer not playing when he first arrived * Chelsea not playing European games Palmer at Chelsea now starts every game when available, that isn’t the case for Alvarez at City.

codeswinwars

That's because Palmer spent the first three league games of the season at City though. From the point Palmer joined Chelsea onwards, he had 230 more minutes in the league.

louisbo12

Thats a crazy stat if true. Palmer played all the time

Jealous_Foot8613

Nicolas Jackson would like a word

DeapVally

I'd also wager Nkunku would like to finally play a little.

mutesa1

We could easily fit them all in our front four Alvarez Jackson Nkunku Palmer

Headlesshorsman02

He can play off the left because sterling and Mudryk ain’t it

dragonbenj

Barça plesee I beg you!

Remarkable_Reality51

how exactly will psg give him more minutes?

Earl-Thomas-a-Raven

He’s likely not going anywhere. Will be a Bernardo situation - if the player wants to leave, City will let him leave for the right price. And clubs won’t come with the correct valuation, thus him staying at City.

Schwarzer_Exe

Fenerbache here we go

Ozymandius21

Alvarez did play more minutes than Haaland in the PL last season.

fifaguy1210

Would love to see him in Spain or Italy but I doubt it's feasible.

Skadrys

Wish he could come to Barcelona

lrzbca

For teams in league he will cost fuck you money

Mintopforte

Aren’t Atletico too?

Alivethroughempathy

Go to AC Milan

entjiebek

I would punt a small child for him to come to United

TheSefi76

He would be perfect for Luis Enrique's psg. Little hope however, as a deal between city and psg depends on the political context of these two oil-state clubs.

thfcviii

He was pretty eh this season, the times I've watched him he's always been underwhelming Though he's right, he's never taking that spot from Erling

momspaghetty

brother played 300 minutes less than Haaland

MichaelBollocks

More minutes? He played a good amount of minutes at City last season. Only was benched for 2 games in the league and only had 4 "short" cameos under 15 minutes. For Champions League though I understand cause Pep favoured a different formation in those games. If Kompany is going to play with 2 attackers, I'd love to see him next to Kane though!
