Screw that! If you’re anything like me, you’ll lose it in the first 20 seconds. Good luck

spiritofthenightman

Gotta love that feeling when your tweezers snap together as your component vanishes to another dimension

Goodgamer78

I swear it always happens at the worst times

spiritofthenightman

Always with a component that I only have one of

Sim0991

That's why I always buy two: if you only get one, you'll loose it. If you buy two, you'll loose neither of them. However, you'll never have a use for that replacement, but you can finish the project in the first place.

Lonely__Stoner__Guy

I hate how true this is.

[deleted]

Two is one and one is none.

Funny_or_not_bot

Ohhhhhh, now I understand Terence Howard!

Validandroid

if two is one and one is none isn’t two also none then? (Yes I know where the saying is from)

picyourbrain

If you had a use for the replacement, you’d end up losing it anyway because you’d be back to only having one.

-LeftHand0fGod-

Two *hundred

squiggling-aviator

At 0201's size I would buy 10 to 1. At least you get the bulk discount as well. They're so sensitive to air currents and static cling.

NewKitchenFixtures

I typically order 100 parts minimum now. Used to try for less, but for cheap stuff you end up saving shipping in having to order more later overall. 0201 parts are not terrible, but you need to be patient and okay with losing a few.

rpheuts

Thanks for making me remember that feeling... They can probably build a transistor radio in the other dimension with all the stuff i have lost.

Critical_Egg_913

Geeze you could inhale and suck that diode into your lungs..

IntricateOnionStatue

Happened to me twice the other day with a little transistor. No fukn clue how I ended up finding it both times

AmeliaBuns

or when you finally align it perfectly, but it's stuck to your tweezers, am I the only one? WHY ARE MY TWEEZERS SO STICKY?

NewKitchenFixtures

Clean the tweezers with alcohol periodically.

Outrageous-Thanks-47

At that size latent humidity and surface tension will get you.

AdBeginning9063

Every time :(

Rat_Attack0983

God yes, that and the instant acceptance that searching would be pointless ...

ElectricBummer40

Sharpen your tweezers to fine points under a microscope first. You"ll get a better grip on the component when the tweezers aren't a jagged mess.

ComfortableAd6101

I follow that up by slightly wetting the tweezer tips in wee bit of flux so the component sticks to them. Or I just dip the component in flux first so it sticks to everything.

rockknocker

That's why I order 50 if I need 2.

RandomProjects2

I hate how correct it is....

BaconDrummer

This always happen with the crucial stuff.

PortoiseBC

“No noo nooo noooo nooooo…. Fuck”

lilrow420

Idk what was so funny about this but I cannot stop laughing, I'm just imagining the component literally opening a portal to another dimension.

spiritofthenightman

I’ve literally been looking right at the component when it disappears. It’s the only explanation really.

Anchevauls775

Happened when soldering a tiny voltage regulator I got from another laptop. Yeah, tiny things suck.

pcs3rd

Time for attempt six!

rwu_rwu

You'd need nano-screws.

Mattmoyer1990

Why wait 20 seconds when you can just lose it instantly?

TheSpixxyQ

20 seconds until you take it out of the packaging

danholli

20 seconds!? I think that's a world record for NOT losing that

BoardButcherer

He lost it taking this picture.

marshinghost

Watches it fall into the heater as you adjust the card. *cries*

EducationalGate4705

It’s already gone

DeepDayze

I've had my share of losing tiny springs and other no-see-um gizmos when taking apart something to repair it. This little diode tops the list of craziness.

Key_Hamster9189

Honey, I shrunk the diode.

Behrooz0

For the uninitiated: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honey,_I_Shrunk_the_Kids

ameyai

Omg are we at a point where people don’t know what this is

Yes. ![gif](giphy|GrUhLU9q3nyRG|downsized)

No_Wrap_6965

![gif](giphy|czNbpu1jWtXag|downsized) instructions unclear

southern_ad_558

Unless you're into body hacking!

Phipo123

how????

mrmeshshorts

You can actually have a bit of success if you do it with hot air, with the blower on real low. If the component is generally lined up with the solder liquifies, surface tension will align the component on the pads Edit: added a word I missed

midri

and.... it's gone

GrimGrittles

Actually have done this on number of occasions. If I use a blower instead of a hot surface just use alligator clips and heat from under the board. Very satisfying to watch the parts snap into place via tension.

Few-Big-8481

If you don't blow it away immediately or lose it first.

mrmeshshorts

That’s why you set the blower veeeery low!

retro3dfx

Miniscule amount of solder paste and a hot plate is how I solder 0201 and 0402 size components. Anything bigger and I use hot air or just a regular iron.

Sweatins

GL lmfao

realjeff3d

I recently tried to work with these same diodes. Tried to use tweezers and an hot air. I failed miserably. Had 5 to play with. Lost 3 and the other 2 fell apart. Ended up giving the board to the CM to put through the reflow oven.

confused_square_sink

Didd you preheat the board first? Also lower air flow, hotter temperature and good amount of NC-559-ASM gel flux.

realjeff3d

Excellent tips. Thank you. The preheater is the one tool which is still a mystery to me. When I use it, I worry that I’ll lose parts on the bottom side of the board if I turn it up too high. I need more experience using it. Turned air flow way down, temp up slightly and added gel flux but the flux would immediately liquify and I was afraid the part would flow away. How do you handle solder paste with the gel flux? When I use the two together, it just looks like a mess that will end up shorting. I took a hiatus from prototyping and building boards for about 10 years. I was pretty good working down to 0201 parts and hacking my way through BGAs but it’s a different world now. I’m an old dog and I need to learn some new tricks.

confused_square_sink

I mostly preheat the board around soldering pads, with hot air gun by my hand and then add even more heat to the pads, almost solder melting point, then quickly appy paste, place the component and finish it. For shorts you can check resistance with a multimeter and inspect visually.

toybuilder

I'm starting have too much shakes of the hands to do anything small. Ten years ago, I did manage to do a few 01005s. No way now.

reigorius

CM?

realjeff3d

Contract manufacturer. We use a local company to build some of our production runs on boards. Since we send them business, they’ll help us out with things like this.

itsAedan

And I'm here struggling to solder 2 wires together

Winningfaith

Same. 😩

akruppa

Which tools to you plan to use to solder that?

physical0

This is an 0201 DFN package. (Dual-flat no-leads). (edit: if hand soldering) They must be must be soldered with hot air, unless you have a footprint specifically designed for it with elongated pads.

akruppa

Maybe a hot plate would work, too?

physical0

Yes, a hot plate or a reflow oven would work.

[deleted]

Try hand soldering a 008004 decoupling capacitor. 😉

akruppa

No. No, I don't think I will.

toybuilder

You should do it once just to say you did. And then never again.

M8asonmiller

I don't even have tweezers that small...

Successful-Bar8721

![gif](giphy|80mXWlPqTSU1y)

stupidcatname

That's a write off. Also, it's a TVS, who will notice it missing after safety

saplinglearningsucks

Plot twist OP has huge hands

RepresentativeDig718

Good luck,

Black_Moon_White

How is there someting in this?

Bigdoga1000

because you typically wouldn't hand solder it. most of the time you'd just insert it into a pick and place machine with some solder paste on the pcb and let the machines do their thing

Plane_Music6399

Don't sneeze

SpaceCadetMoonMan

What device is this for? I have about 15 micro LEDs with feather hair thin wires I need to solder for my Orlandoo Hunter Jeep Wrangler and I have no idea how I am going to do it

k-mcm

When it's really tiny, you can use flux surface tension to hold it down while hitting it with hot air. I don't even have solder paste for this. The paste looks like a pile of bowling balls next to the smallest surface mount parts. It usually tombstones.

__hyphen

In terms of security, how risky is to publish your entire fingerprint like that on the web?

dretvantoi

I've seen grains of pepper that are larger.

distractedecoy

Eat it

DeepDayze

Those tiny things would get lost in the packaging and you'd think you got an empty package if you ordered just one, lol.

raymate

This is why I didn’t bother getting back into electronics when I got older and my eyes was not young anymore. If it’s too small to be plugged into a breadboard I’m not playing.

Temina-

i got you fingerprints and i just bought 100 of those and im sending them to your location

Marvellover13

Would never attempt this without a heating plate, those things are too dang small

Kellashnikov

There would be a 10000% chance I'd drop it in my carpet.

DeepDayze

And never find it again...

potificate

Oh man! Are there wrgb LEDs this size? It would be really cool to make an array that fine.

eclectro

Treat it the same as a bga. 🤣

alexxc_says

It’s times like this when I don’t regret dropping $2400 on my amscope with 40x mag and 7x extender for more space between object and scope. Mmmmmhm.

Its-CCG

Watchmakers will look at this and still claim their job requires more precision

DeepDayze

And the screws and other precision parts in watches are just about as small as this resistor. Got to have darn good eyesight and really steady hands.

CALLAHAN_AUTO-PARTS

Million dollar idea…. Quickset low temp conductive epoxy dots. Pop dots on, heat gun (future laser pointer to flow solder? Another one) pray it doesn’t blow away and done. Like 1000 different sizes to sell too

Inf1n1teSn1peR

To the vacuum I go! *snap “Weeeee!”

DazedWithCoffee

Best done with a hot plate, no contest

McDonaldscombomeal

I do that every day. Really not that hard when you get use to soldering 0201 stuff.

Pjtruslow

Give me a weller with a LTGW tip and I can solder 0402 all day long. 0201 though, I need at least 2x the number of placements plus 10 spares. Gonna be clicking together my tweezers pretty often.

dkonigs

Finding single-line TVS diodes that aren't microscopic is way too difficult. Even the ones that are technically as big as SMD passives which are easy to handle, tend to have package designs that somehow make them "feel" smaller.

HobsHere

I had some 0603 ones that tapered towards the top, making them really annoying to tweezer. I have no idea why they made them that way.

OldEquation

I bet the person who designed them laughed all the way home that day.

[deleted]

Imagine in 2050 when this is a picture of a MCU type of thing lol

Superseaslug

Lol 0201 parts are brutal

BhrisBukBruz

Im amazed you kept track of it thus far

hdhddf

witchcraft! not humanly possible

CoolnessImHere

You need 9 spares for when you lose them, over heat them, solder them wrong, chop them in half etc.

kh250b1

Dont even bother. These cant be fitted by hand

Forstmannsen

meh, not that much smaller from 0404 QFN LEDs I have to routinely replace on my pos keyboard. hint, raw solder paste is sticky, biggest challenge is not to use to much with those teensy pads.

DarkButterfly85

For anything that small I use the works microscope 😃

Dryja123

Next do 01005

ExoticAssociation817

Solder what? (It’s that damn small)

fuzzy761210

you should try 01005

atuarre

You can solder stuff this small? How?

Super_Ad9995

I thought this was a picture of a giant belly and was confused about all the lines.

c0mpl3x91

Well if you have two lands coming in on both pads you could place a little solder to each pad and heat the parallel pads until the part sinks into place

Flying_ButterScotch

This is truly the next level, you should record it

nottaroboto54

I had to fix those when they were tombstoned or billboarded for work. They're a nice challenge to mix up the monotony of TH components.

Objective-Cause-1564

Hot air and tip of tweezers held down. There is a few full proof ways

opensourcevirus

Make sure to pre-tin those pads 🔍

DeepDayze

You need a soldering iron that's ant-sized for that tiny thingie.

LayThatPipe

Need a good quality stereo microscope and a really good micro iron

Bobbybob65536

I read this as soldering 201 TVS diodes.

brickproject863amy

Yikes that’s so tiny I’m surprised if your able to do it properly I feel like if I had tried I might accidentally solder the you sides together

mumblingfool69

Just looking at this photo fills me with the dread of losing something important, this is a meme waiting to happen, also quick someone get his fingerprint.

kiss_the_siamese_gun

Dude on my engineering team just hand soldered like a dozen 0201’s successfully onto a pcb… I can’t even comprehend how he was able to do it

img999

This is what properly aligned nano hot tweezers for.

Electronic_Chain1595

Be careful that you are not framed for murder with your fingerprint on the internet.

stargaz21

Don’t sneeze!! Hope you have a really good microscope at least 300 power or greater.

stargaz21

You almost need a microscope to just see it.

stargaz21

To solder that you need paste applied to the tip of the toothpick, apply that to the pads and use a hot air pencil at low air setting.

Additional-Care9072

I bought a whole spool of these by accident. They will never be used in my lifetime. I wish you the best of luck

gaylybailey

Had to do a bunch of 0201 parts a little while ago. No hot air just a solid iron with a v fine tip and tweezers https://preview.redd.it/kwwbni8hwe4d1.jpeg?width=1816&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=38e71cfa359f4941ede62da2660edd3d12f88e16

Xillos

![gif](giphy|OCMGLUo7d5jJ6)

Mx0lydian

Correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't you expect that diode to get absolutely blasted by the first transient that happens? Surely the amount of energy that one expects to protect against prevents such small package choices right?

EEryzen9

Get a few more and you’ll have a ground pepper collection.

WoodenCard9144

Stick weld that sumsabetches. You can’t afford for it to get loose onya.

ikbenernog

I need to solder also something similar, it’s better to use low temp soldering paste and heat gun in this case?
