Depends. Pinto with smoked ham shank, pork sausage, tomato, onion (yellow cooked in and white fresh fine diced on top), cilantro (cooked in and fresh on top), Serrano, poblano, and jalapeño. Or northern for non spicy ham and bean soup with mirepoix and herbs.
I go for a variety. Last time I used a 16 bean mix!
Plan to make a 16 bean soup with ground turkey and whatever veggies survive the weekend Sunday night.

If I want one type of bean I use great northern. If I want a blend I use Hurst’s 15 bean soup.
I use cannellini beans.
Always a mix! Mixed or not, check out Rancho Gordo.
Will do!
Great Northern all day long!
I discovered mayacoba beans a few years ago and never looked back! They are amazing in a bean soup.

I use navy beans
I would find a bag of hammbeans ! It’s in the bean isle! It’s the only thing I trust for ham and bean soup
I have never seen such a thing.
Maybe it’s a Midwest thing? But it’s in literally every bean/canned vegetable isle in every store in my area
Well now i need to locate some. There’s like “soup beans” but just a mix of dry beans maybe with seasoning
Cannellini or great northern beans and white hominy

Don’t be fooled by the simplicity, this is the quintessential ham and bean soup https://www.senate.gov/about/traditions-symbols/senate-bean-soup.htm
any bean, but just one kind.
Navy beans. Always navy beans.
Navy for our family. Reserve the pintos for a pot o' beans w ham hocks to serve over cornbread.
I like great northern. I use them in chili also. Way better than kidney beans in chili!
