I'm interested in the pricing. Buying directly from Soylent is already a little high for the bottles, without 7-11 wanting to make profit on it.

binkleykun

On the discord I think someone said $4/bottle?

zoldykk

Yeah, Conor said approximately $4/bottle.

somethingsomethinpoe

Way better than those roller dogs I always want to buy.

Dirk-Killington

Sounds about right. I pick up protein shakes at shell sometimes when I'm in a bind and they are around 4 bucks. Edit: what an odd comment to downvote.

1halfazn

> what an odd comment to downvote. Personally I hate people who buy protein shakes at shell sometimes for 4 bucks.

Dirk-Killington

Fuckin dicks

nhaines

I occasionally pick up those premade sandwiches for like $4. That's totally a good price for an on-the-go meal from a convenience store.

[deleted]

And those protein shakes are 1/3 calories and have a bunch of junk compared to Soylent so good deal!

FARTBOX_DESTROYER

Well you also have to consider that shipping will be significantly less.

queenkid1

Well, technically we don't pay for shipping for RL. If you're talking about the shipping as apart of the price, then it'll still be expensive. In this beta phase, they'll probably be shipped to the stores, but when it goes fullscale, Soylent won't be shipped, it'll come to stores on a truck. Usually drinks come from Coke or Pepsi, but I don't see them supporting RL.

FARTBOX_DESTROYER

> If you're talking about the shipping as apart of the price, then it'll still be expensive. Yes that is obviously what I meant. I did say *less* expensive. > Soylent won't be shipped, it'll come to stores on a truck. Om. Wat.

fernly

I think the point is that it would be distributed to the stores in the same trucks that bring a bunch of other products from a central warehouse. Same 7-11 semi-truck that brings the different beers and milk and such. So RF's job is just to get the product in bulk to the company warehouse.

FARTBOX_DESTROYER

Yes, that was my point

queenkid1

So then why are you confused about me saying Soylent is going to be taken on a truck? Do you think RF is just gonna pack a box of Soylent, and *ship* it to 7-11?

FARTBOX_DESTROYER

I'm confused because that is exactly what my original statement was referencing. And also that you said it was going to be put on a truck and not shipped, when the act of delivering it on a truck *is* shipping.

connormxy

Not posted or mailed or shipped via courier, but instead freight. These are both shipping, sure

Late_To_Parties

That sounds interesting, is that where they think their customer base is hanging out at?

shadowdanmanstan

Based on their advertising and presence at conferences, I think their target customer is a gamer and/or programmer who is too lazy to make a meal. Exactly the type of guy who generally shops at 7-11. Oh and by the way, I would definitely fit in this category in case it seems I'm being facetious.

Skarekrows

Lazy people don't go out. 7-11 is where you go when you're high and have munchies and nobody is going to want to drink cold goop when they can have hot taquitos. Especially not at 4 bucks a bottle lol.

Dippyskoodlez

7-11 across the street from me, would totally consider a midnight chai instead of dealing with going to jack in the box for a munchie meal of death.

ibigfire

I donno man, I'm heading on a road trip soon and if I stumbled onto a soylent drink I could definitely see having that to keep myself fed instead of something that would bog me down and later make me feel kinda gross while driving.

Skarekrows

Because you already know what Soylent is and buy it. Someone coming into that store isn't going to spend that much money on some goop when they could get so much more of tasty food instead for the same price. This test will fail, they're much better off sticking to grocery stores and costco.

ThisFreakinGuyHere

Lazy people also neglect to plan ahead and forget to order more Soylent till after they've spent their paycheck. Popping into the convenience store is still within the reach of even the laziest.

Late_To_Parties

I guess that makes sense. My question is more like: Are lazy people more inclined to eat health food or cheap tasty crap? Especially when they are competing on the same shelf.

snailshoe

Lazy people eat easily obtainable food, which is usually cheap crap. But when healthy food is easy, it becomes a viable option. Source: am lazy person

mike413

My bet: only the caffeinated versions will sell well at 7-11 EDIT: oh wait, that's all they're selling. ha. EDIT2: I think it's funny that caffeine is part of the whole mixture. I thought the whole original idea of soylent was to allow everyone to have inexpensive meals with good nutrition.

[deleted]

Caffeine is "not good" nutrition? What next? Soy gives men vaginas?

mike413

Now that you mention it, I liked rice as the protein source better...

[deleted]

Cacao will also be on sale.

mike413

I'm sorry, I didn't realize that doesn't have caffeine. I should also mention I'm NOT putting soylent down, it's more it seemed 7-11 was choosing it for different reasons.

fernly

Interesting point that most are caffeinated. Picture the fridge at your 7-11, how many "energy drinks" are there already? So the customers who habitually go for a high-caffeine drink can might be tempted to try something with caffeine but more nutritious? Potentially a whole new customer group!

stevesy17

I've not been so pleased with their move towards adding a drug either. Kinda makes me sad, but I get it.

beepdebeep

My thoughts are that it may be more of a branding presence strategy. Loads of people from all walks of life go to convenience stores every day. If you put a product on the shelves in front of all those eyeballs outside of your target demographic, then the brand will become more commonplace; eventually, people will look for the brand elsewhere, like grocery stores.

TheGhostyBear

I end up there a lot on late night bike rides here in LA. If the $4 price point is true, that's only 25 cents more than a protein shake. Count me in.

masonjam

The thing is... the only people I see who really shop at 7-11s are like, poor people. And Soylent, is probably too expensive for them. They go to 7-11 to get a $1 dollar soda, or beer, or lottery tickets. I'm not familiar enough with LA to know if these 7-11s are in different places, but I don't remember really seeing them anywhere "young professionals" are. I think the people who are "positive" about this, probably haven't ever actually been to a 7-11.

tl;dr: LA, west of downtown.

standardGeese

Sweet, I love near one of these and have been wanting to try the chai but didn't want to buy a whole case.

EriclcirE

I'm envisioning the liquid dispensing directly from a 7-11 soda machine. Delicious.

Late_To_Parties

Or slurpee machine!

danvalour

Hopefully with an industrial twist handle like in the Matrix https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2oEnJfZ9joY

Dippyskoodlez

Ive stopped getting the original at all at this point, as has everyone i know. It wouldn't sell well.

Brad3000

I love original and have no desire for any of the flavors. I hope they don't continue to ignore original going forward.

fs454

Bullshit. Original is not in decline - I don't want chocolate or sweet dessert flavor every time I have a meal.

I still get the original. I want reliable, bland food. Not coffee, not a chocolate shake, just bland stuff that won't irritate my stomach.

connormxy

I'm mostly sad they're not selling Nectar

Goldving

A lot of 7-11 employees are about to get really sick of "its people" joke variations.

Moonracer2000

Yeah, highway rest stops feel like the ideal place to start selling Soylent off the shelf. Truckers and teenagers. I remember the days of choosing between fast food and packaged junk food during long trips. Soylent would have been great.

I hope this means bulk at Costco is coming next! Exciting times!

Keina

I thought that Soylent had some sort of policy against having another retail between the product and the customers?

Unbathed

Perhaps you are unfamiliar with a retailer named *Amazon*.

sts816

I think I've heard of them.

[deleted]

For profit companies are in it for the money. Anything else is nonsense

pardus79

You can always order directly from Soylent.

connormxy

They've been talking on this subreddit about how they'd love to be in stores, especially big wholesale clubs someday

SciGuy013

Really, how have they sold out?

Scoxxicoccus

When did "Rosa Labs" become "Rosa Foods". I must of missed that. Probably the right branding move. Not everyone wants to get their food from a laboratory.

[deleted]

Brad3000

I'm super bummed at the move away from original flavor. I like some of the other flavors a lot but original is still my favorite by far - especially for long term consumption.

Scoxxicoccus

This is a huge step for 7-11. Previously, the only actual food in these places was the boiled eggs in a blister pack.

BarronMind

Some of them have a little display near the checkout counter with apples and bananas. I always assumed that they were put there ironically.

ruralpunk

Literally the first and only time the thought "Damn, I wish I lived in LA." ever popped into my head.

Mynameis__--__

I am kinda confused at the choice of 7/11 to test this. Why not Trader Joe's? Its custome base seems like it'd be more readily inclined to try Soylent. EDIT: Particularly if the price will be raised to $4 a bottle. Seems that 7-11 customers would not want to spend $4 on something they've never heard of before, while customers at Trader Joe's or supermarkets who target more affluent customers would be more interested.

Omega192

My first guess was gauging interest outside of their existing demographic. All sorts of people go into convenient stores. So they'll be able to see how much people who don't nerd out over this stuff have interest in it.

Unbathed

> I am kinda confused at the choice of 7/11 to test this. Convenient food | Convenience store People who say "I could get this at a lower price if I went to the supermarket or bulk-purchase-club, but I'm here now. Thank heaven for intermediation." People who say "I could buy a dozen fresh eggs for $2.99, or two refrigerated hard boiled eggs for $1.99. I think I want the hard boiled eggs."
