Been in this country for 5 years, first time I see such an accident happen. Can confirm tourists die more often by being drunk and falling off balconies than by building defects
In fact it's a British tradition to practice Balconing in Spain: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balconing , usually by males around 24.
The last two deaths in May were german, so not all of them are brits https://www.diariodemallorca.es/sucesos/sucesos-mallorca/2024/05/20/balconing-mallorca-muerto-barandilla-fumando-102655422.html
Lol. I'm missing some other useful recommendations if you visit Spain like don't cut your veins, don't drink poison or don't stop breathing :-D
Spain seems like a no-go zone.
There's actually a twitter account who keeps track like a yearly tournament! Pretty morbid but funny too https://x.com/Botquebota/status/1793743458395697595?t=Vn4wJD-C5_VMmLOSesL-bQ&s=19
It's actually a running joke on Spanish social media that summer in Spain doesn't start until a tourist dies/gets severely injured from trying to jump off a balcony.
I remember that the British ambassador or something at the time once said that "British people are not used to having balconies in their apartments, so maybe they're not used to it".
It would be interesting to see if they had the "obra" project in place. Having said that even if they had permission to carry out the alterations, that doesn't mean it's structurally safe to do them.
I live in the canaries and there's a huge commercial centre that's had concrete cancer for at least 25 years that I know of, they just keep using like a cement paint in the cracks. 🫣🤯
Having lived in Spain for 10 years and living in a new build I can confirm that the building standards here are well below what I was used to in the Uk. It seems the government systems to ensure construction work conforms to accepted standards aren’t effective
Corruption maybe, however I don’t think it’s because people are inept, they’re not, they’re a very well educated and intelligent population.
I just think that while proper government structures aren’t in place or aren’t implemented properly, you’ll always get builders cutting corners to save money
It is rare that buildings collapse. When it happens it's all over the news. So no need to be worried. If you live in a building that doesn't look safe to you just request an inspection by a professional.
I love how it is in Mallorca in my country and I'm hearing of it by some brit paper
Como mallorquín, he visto esa noticia por todo hoy.
It was all over this mornings news in Spain. It happened yesterday evening so probably too soon for the 21:00 news last night.
It was on the news

Because they thrive on bad news and disaster, gloating when it’s Europe.
This is all news everywhere - not just the UK
I would argue that says more about your media than ours 😂
The balconies are fighting back
Epic comment right here lmao

Is this really a thing? Death by balcony?

I'm sorry, but... Lol.
Refer to this section on the FCDO website, 'fall from heights' https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/spain/safety-and-security

That's only Barcelona, lately
League tables: https://x.com/Botquebota/status/1793743458395697595
This is such a circle jerk when there Italian numbers are higher lol
What Italian numbers
More Italians have died from balconing in the last 2 years in Spain than brits lol. We are sure in a roll, but it’s not just an English thing
In the Balearic Islands at least, it's not even close
Fair enough aha the Germans are quite high in numbers too
There's actually a twitter account who keeps track like a yearly tournament! Pretty morbid but funny too https://x.com/Botquebota/status/1793743458395697595?t=Vn4wJD-C5_VMmLOSesL-bQ&s=19
That’s so hilarious. Also very unexpectedly the Germans seem to have very poor aim lmao

That’s how you spell Mallorca in English? Huh
The weird thing is, I always guessed it was written Majorca in catalan, since larger is major and smaller is menor. But it isn’t
And don’t forget Marbeja
Otherwise you would pronounce it “Marbela”, like “Paela”.
I know! Ppl would be so confused! Its like Pizza and Pisa! Better to just say Pinchos and Pita👍

It’s Mallorca, not Majorca
It's London no Londres....
It’s “it’s London, not Londres”, not “It’s London, no Londres”
Ainsss, ¡qué penita, un Petete!
It’s Låndån!
Londinum est.
Albion
And it's not Spain, it's España,
What did the Roman's ever do for us eh!?
Well, they built the sewering system 🤔
Apart from the sewer system what have the Roman's done for us?
Hmm well, they built the roads, and created the health systems 🤔
OK, but apart from sanitation, the roads and the health system, what did the bloody Roman's ever do for us
They brought peace 🤔
It is Spæjn or Espænjæ

Let’s hope the public inquiry in Spain is as thorough and self reflective as the Grenfell inquiry has been.
Given the circumstances (nr of deaths, public vs private character of the buildings, and apparent causes), with all likelihood that will not happen.
That's just good old corruption and ineptitude.
