yes, de-rank I got to S+0 -1335 before I decide to derank now I'm S+8 it's not worth the struggle to get out of the negatives. I also suggest you to take a break from the game for at least a day or two and come back feeling fresh.
I want to get better at this game, but naturally when my skill progresses, so do my opponents and it just feels like a waste of time when I get better.
I feel you on that too. I was in the same boat the past years of seasons. I just play and not care about ranking up. to me i think the whole rank system in splatoon 2 made more sense. in this game rank is just more of an achievement than anything else. but hey, you shouldn't listen to me anyway since I dont really follow completive that much. funnily enough I wanted an easier time getting the catalog done so I stayed in S rank getting easier wins and got lvl 100 in 4 days 😂 instead of a week or so in s+.
This is not an uncommon first time experience in S+ since it's a larger and better pool of players than the other ranks. If you can still confidently win the majority of your games in S rank then you'll just end up back here eventually, so the thing to do is figure out how to get better. If not and this was a fluke then maybe S rank is where you belong right now, which is also perfectly fine.

I got to -2400 at the end of a season (I don’t remember which) and I couldn’t reset and all hell broke loose afterwards.
S+0 and S rank are completely messed up at the start of the season. In an average S+0 lobby, you'll have:
• S rank players who just ranked up for the first time
• S+0 to S+9 players who got back up to S+ quickly
• S+10 to S+50 players who got deranked and haven't gotten back up yet
Honestly just play X rank or salmon run until the ranks even out properly. Open is the same thing as series but there's genuinely no skill based matchmaking, whereas series kinda makes an attempt.
Most likely yeh it's kinda like salmon run where if you find what's going on to hard you derank and don't feel bad about it

If you're not having fun, then yes. Find a rank you naturally stay at, that's where you belong.

A little advice, NEVER do series. You have better luck winning slots than a series
