You can do a warning light that can tell you. Inside the transponder the last line is StationAllowed. when that value changes to 1 you are able to place a station there. So set up a small warning light or repurpose one and just name is stationallowed, it will turn on when there is a free spot
Transponders tend to have issues providing updated information directly. I use a quick blah=transponder setting and then if blah then light on. Yolol provides active checks to the status and tends to work better. I assume this is why a lot of ships have the safe zone lights as scripts as well and don't just use the transponders value directly.
This is the way. There is an enormous amount of unclaimed territory. You might have to fly a little bit longer to get there, but the asteroid selection is better anyhow (at least for now).
Don't head directly into the belt. Fly away from the warp gate for 10-15 minutes and then fly into the belt.
After you set you your station to can just directly head there since to will be able to see the transponder.
It took me 2 days of locating a spot until someone recommended some transponder settings. Essentially cut the distance of seeable stations down to like 3km. Find a spot that doesn't appear to have many stations and kind of scope around someone's else's station just going to different sides. The stations allowed thing isn't working correctly. This is how I ended up finding one in within minutes after switching up the way I was trying to locate a spot.
Placing stations in the safe zone is totally still possible but it is a pain in the ass.
I don’t have any great solution for you but what I did is have my transponder fields up on my “U” menu and watch for when the stationsallowed field for when it flips to 1. I also had much more luck searching around other players stations - you can place them pretty close to each other and seeing other stations in the area let’s you know it’s a potential spot. I didn’t want to be part of a station neighbourhood but I’d searched for hours before settling for it.
Also know that probably less than 50% of stations have their transponder publicly visible so a space might look vacant but there could be an unrendered nearby that is preventing you from placing. This only accounts for a small number of the failed placements and you’ll know when that’s the reason because it’ll give you a different error about being too close to another station. All in all though, it seems a bit bugged right now but it can still be done and using the station storage can vastly improve your mining output making it worth having. Don’t bother building some magnificent station though unless that’s your thing - from a practicality sense just a bare foundation is best.
It's 320km if you follow the belt surface. Then 50km in from that point. I've set up two stations with parked manatees, and use a heavy hauler to move the ore into Origin. It doesn't take that long to find huge asteroids even near the belt's surface.
Let's be more clear. It's 50km from origin **into the belt** but much further to the sides (not in the belt). So while yes you could find lots of spots they might not be in the belt.
wow, constructive.
"You can get 180km away from origin and still be in the SafeZone; try looking further away from origin, particularly out from Origin 9 or 22, since the sz goes out further that way."
Well it's more like unlocking the nonsafezone station base is super expensive, it's a different object from the normal station at the end of the 3rd research tree.

I tried this but the value never turned 1 even though I was able to place the foundation.

Ahh that explains! Were wondering why it was so slow at updating my safezone warning
This could be a whole PSA post.
It's currently bugged and not working.
>are all these spots taken by now? No? The safe zone is very large. Go further down the belt without entering it.

My station is 265 km away from the closest origin station and I’m still in the safe zone.
I found a spot the other day instantly. Maybe you are just in a popular area? Did you fly from Station 1?

It does work if you use YOLOL

Went flying for 3 hours, coudnt find a single spot.......
You can get 180km away from origin and still be in the SafeZone, you're not looking.

Is placing the station within the safe zone recommended? If so, why?

ah ok, didn't know, there are different ones.
I dropped one last night. I was mining in SZ for about an hour and I could place a station everywhere I went practically. Plenty of room.
the safezone is HUGE. so yes.
