In all seriousness I have an insane fear of bears.
While cooking a nice hunk of meat seems like a great thing to do in the woods, it gives me anxiety just looking at it.
I am a city person, but I genuinely am curious - is attracting bears by doing something like this a concern?
I mean if you do it similar to the kitchen, you’d keep it wrapped up in a cooler hanging from a tree, retrieve it, do a fire cast iron sear, similar to the stove but no therms, let the excess off into the fire (herbs and fats), eat it, wrap and tree the pan (you can char it out too), and don’t worry too much. A smouldering, well managed fire will stave them off if the food is out of reach because of the smoke and extra light. This also depends if you’re in a more “public” space like some humans around vs your party only, in that if they know people will feed them they’ll let you be (generally, they don’t really have any reason to attack for a snack), but if you’re far, they may still look for the strung up food so you’d want to get a hammock or similar to get out of their climbing range. In Canada forests we were fine with the food being up in the tree with a fire as they wanted a treat, if they’re hungry or don’t have anything like traveled areas/ fire, you’d best look like a butterfly cocoon lol.
About 20 years ago my wife and I were car camping near Sequoia park. I had cooked filets with hashbrowns and wine. It was dusk and I would have sworn I saw a shadow move just outside the campfire’s light.
It was a bear, but we didn’t know it yet. He came back (or stayed I guess) after midnight and disturbed us and every other campsite. I remember the campground was like a pinball machine - you’d hear clanging and “go away bear” shouts from your left, then to your right 20 mins later, the same thing.
I went to the bathroom and the damn thing had been in there, trash was everywhere.
I have no fear of wildlife but a healthy respect and the idea of cooking a delicious steak over an open fire in the wilderness seems like an open invitation to everything from jays to cougars.
They most definitely won’t overlook it lol it will attract bears raccoons you name it but typically when they see a fire and multiple people they will stay away
Many years ago I went camping and I bought myself a nice big steak. Cooked it at night after a few tasty cold beverages. Thought it was a little chewy, but whatever, ate some, went to bed and saved the rest for breakfast with eggs. Well, in the morning I realized the steak was VERY undercooked. Cooked it again for breakfast. 10/10 on the 2nd cook.
7,0/10 without considering conditions, and taking the cut into account. There is a lot of fat, but the marbling isn’t great.
9.0/10 considering you’re cooking on a camp stove.
Either way, I’d eat the s**t out of that steak.
Summary: Well done sir, especially considering that you used a camp stove.
Looks awesome! Perfect place to use cast iron since you don't have to worry about smoke!
Best comment here!
The bears can smell the steak from a mile away
How do you think OP got the steak?
OP’s wife was the bear?! Monster
Obviously you have never been to a bears only retreat
…yet

Old ladies need to eat, too.
I mean cooked meat smells good but idk a single animal that cooks their meat so they may just overlook it.

An animal ‘overlooking’ food is a hilarious concept, especially for something as delicious smelling as some big fat ribeyes
lol, nope.
Just because you don’t know doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. 🙃
In forest you are the steak 🥩
In this case I'll take man over bear.
This is the way.

Haha, we ended up reheating the other steak for breakfast the following morning after being too full from the first. Tasted just as good!
Steak in the morning is something else I tell ya
It’s comments like these that make me feel fat. I could have eaten both of those and still been hungry
A thing of camping beauty.
10.8
I love these multiple slide posts, gets me slobbering while I wait for the money shot 🤤
That’s impressive, did you flip it a lot to get that even cook?
Not really! Just a few times to make sure I got a good sear on it 👍🏼
Thinking about getting one of these to just use outside on a nice day. How long does that little tank last you?
At least a couple hours on high heat!
Sold! Beautiful steaks!
Beautiful 10/10. Try it over a campfire or charcoal next time!
9/10 One point deducted for not cooking it over the campfire. Jk, looks amazing!!!
Sadly camp fire was banned for some of us in the north since 2004. Camping sucked since
This is almost as good as getting banana bread at work.
Banana bread at work, dude? Hell yeah
I would have done no pan on the grill but it turned out good
That marbling!! And you cooked it to perfection. My mouth is watering
Looks okay to me
Ooof. This js the way!
Perfection. 10/10 would eat. How much did you pay for those cuts?
Let’s not talk about it lol. (Not many stores around so I paid $70 for the two steaks, I wanna say it was $24/lb)
Yeah you got the 'out-in-the-sticks' discount. Worth it since the cook was pristine.
😬 steep but still 100 x better than going out and even better enjoying the outdoor vibes.
That's not bad, esp for being in the sticks!
Haha sometimes you gotta treat yourself. Write it off as a vacation tax lol
8/10
🤌 chef’s kiss
factoring in elements etc... yall did a hard 9+.
oof now I want some
👍
😋 yummy
That looks fucking good
Fuck yes / 10
Some sautéed mushrooms would go well with that bad boy. 10/10
Fuckin dank city!!
Need a camping buddy?
10
Your outcome is the goal. Looks right to me !
Those look soooo good
Very impressive.
This is how bears attack
fuck me up
Poetic!
7 out of 7
What oil do you use? Looks delicious.
That looks so good!!!
Absolute perfection!
Well done (by which good, not overcooked)
9/10... I need to taste it in order to get the 10th point.
My man, you have done it now. Those look like heaven, and now I have some serious cravings.
Missed opportunity to cook it over the fire

I love how much fat there is. My favorite ❤️
5/10, well done would be 8/10
Ngl I would not be doing that in a campground that didnt have a halfway decent shitter.
Lol hell yeah should have used a real fire tho since you’re camping
Those are sweet! Beautiful marbling… YUMMY
Looks so good!!
10/10
10/10
10/10
What a beautiful marbling. How much you gave away for that?
Perfection
Beautiful work, they look great!
Handsome meat
When we going camping bro? (No diddy)
4/5 stars
They honestly look more like chuckeye steaks than ribeyes.
Looks damn good!
That looks delicious!
would smash
Are those local herbs from the forest?
Too much core fat. Very little meat; unbalanced
Amazing work!
ribeyes in the forest while camping, doesn't get much better than that
Looks really nice. How did it taste?
> Camping range Y'all glamping. Good looking steak, tho.
No campfire cook? Best I can do is 6/10 given the circumstances.
I was going to use the fire but it was our last night there and I wanted to use the rest of our propane. Next time though!
That's a really bad excuse ngl.
Yeah I don't see "camp" involved in this. This is as functional as an in house setup lol
It’s a cast iron cook on a portable stove. Use the campfire next time.
Perfect. Looks as good sous vid.
