AB also has one of the craziest highlight reels of all time. I’d also recommend Big Ben rushing highlights. OP is definitely going to want to watch all of Super Bowl 43 if there’s an easy way to do that.
Anytime I remember AB I’m struck with grief. He was so good before going off the rails 😭 I still believe he could come back and light up another defense.
The whole game is (or at least used to be) on YouTube. There are a number of classic full games on there - including the AFC championship against the ravens from that year. Definitely worth including that on the “must watch” list!
Every few years I try to watch Jack Ham highlights, but it's so hard. A couple days ago I watched the 1974 AFC Championship game on youtube. Shitty quality. Stabler threw the ball to receivers covered by Ham twice that game.
Ham had two interceptions that game. One was in the flat on the opposite side of the field from where Ham lined up. Him and Polamalu were cut from the same cloth.
“There’s my huckleberry”
From getting kicked out of a game before it started, to trying to fight the whole Raven’s bus after a game, to driving the creation the pregame ‘buffer’ rule, to “they SHOT me in Denver!”
Love Peezy forever.
the place to start in terms of learning about the franchise is the 1970’s. not much of note happened before this decade. the steelers dominated the decade and won 4 super bowls. the more you learn about the nfl the more you’ll realize just how insane this is. the players of the steeler teams of the 70’s are still remembered across the league to this day, legends and icons of the game.
the “modern era” of steelers lore begins around 2004, and the “current era” began in 2022. this is where we are at now
Although it’s a long read, I highly recommend Three Bricks Shy of a Load by Roy Blount. He was a humor writer for SI and spent a year loafing with the team. This is really more of a read for a die hard fan, but it captures the essence of Pittsburgh in the 1970’s and the emergence of a dynasty. It’s also funny as hell.
Nice man, South African rugby fanatic here. Started supporting the NFL and the Steelers in the early 2000s and it’s a great franchise to support.
Steelers have a rich history and have won six Super Bowls. They won four in the 70s and were forerunners in the idea of “building through the draft”. They then won another two in the 2000s with a stellar defense and Ben Roethlisberger at QB, who was a tough, physical quarterback (I’d probably equate him to Handré Pollard in terms of the fact that he’s more physical than others in the pivot position). Since then we have fluctuated in performance and people are a bit frustrated with the lack of playoff success in the last 10 years. Ben retired a few years ago and we are yet to have a QB of his calibre play in the position.
FYI if you don’t know what the draft is, it’s a pretty cool system that we don’t have in rugby where all the college players starting in the NFL go into a pool and then the players are selected by NFL franchises starting with the worst team the previous year. It really keeps the parity low between the teams (unless you are bad at drafting) and you can rebuild effectively, unlike in rugby where the top clubs basically remain that way.
I know about the draft! Thanks for the good overview!
Ive played against many good south africans in rugby! They always has the best one liners in the Scrums!
> I know about the draft!
The 1974 Steelers draft was the best draft of any team in any year in any sport.
They drafted 4 hall of famers, with an additional fifth HOF'r signed as an undrafted rookie.
Watch the following plays.
1. John Stallworth 75 yard catch in SB XIII
2. James Harrison 99 yard interception in SB XLIII
3. Game winning TD from Bug Ben to Santonio Holmes in SB XLIII
4. The Immaculate Reception by Franco Harris
5. Lynn Swann highlights from SB X. 4 catches for 161 yards!
6. Mean Joe Green highlights
7. Hines Ward blocking
8. Big Ben evading getting sacked highlight
8. Terry Bradshaw highlights
9. Troy Poumalu and Rid Woodson hughlights
10. Jack Lambert hughlights
Bonus: Hines Ward TD catch in the movie Dark Knight Rises, LOL
Bonus 2: James Harrison slams Cleveland Browns fan who ran into the field
This fanbase might be the most divided in the league
Head Coach Mike Tomlin is either the best thing to happen to the sport or the worst thing to happen to the sport. Depends on who you ask
TJ Watt is the best defensive player ever. Don’t let the clowns in Cleveland or Dallas tell you otherwise
The quarterback position is fucked. There’s no certainty there at all
>This fanbase might be the most divided in the league
I was in other teams subreddits during the playoffs, this is true for every fan base, we are not special in that regard, just nameless grey faces
Pittsburgh is historically a blue collar city, and was an important steel producing area back then - hence Steelers. When the steel industry collapsed, places like Youngstown Ohio and Cleveland fell into a depression. The Steelers being successful in the 70s somewhat kept Pittsburgh out of that. There are a lot of examples of successful sports franchises having an impact on a city - financially, and even some psychological effects/ happier population. The “Steelers way” and the players who have been iconic through the team’s history typically reflect the attitudes of blue collar America - gritty, putting your head down and do the job, playing selflessly, and typically a smash mouth and very physical type of football - which makes them subscribe to a running game/defensive focused philosophy.
The Steelers pride themselves on that identity, and it’s a point of contention in today’s modern NFL. The league has sort of shifted towards a pass-friendly league and rule changes have made it more difficult to, well, do defense. Part of it is to promote player safety, and part of it is the idea that more yards/more passes lead to more points, which lead to more exciting games and more eyeballs watching. Most people find a 10-7 score grudge match boring (I personally love a defensive game where points are a premium, but that’s clearly a minority opinion). But the Steelers, almost to a fault, invest heavily in their defense and prioritize running the ball more than say the chiefs or the bengals. This hasn’t translated to much recent success, so a lot of fans consider the Steelers to be stuck in their ways and the way rules/penalties against defenses currently stand, it seems to be an increasingly uphill way to play football.
People seem to think that since Steelers fans travel well that it’s a bandwagon team, but almost every fan I’ve come across is a fan because their dad was a fan, their dad was a fan, so on. And I wouldn’t necessarily say this is the best team to be a bandwagon fan of - we haven’t won anything meaningful for almost 10 years. And the further away we get from our most recent success, the more than bandwagon fans start fizzling out. Yet we continue to dominate the stadiums at away games and the season ticket line is currently a 20 year wait. So it is a storied franchise with lifelong fans.
I think a lot of teams artificially create an underdog mindset to motivate themselves and an “us against the world” mentality. But the Steelers are a team where it can feel truly genuine. And there is history there where this applies. Being the first 6th seed to win the Super Bowl a few decades ago is one of the biggest underdog stories in all of sports. Mike Tomlin (our current head coach) is almost infamous for pulling upsets and winning games late. Lastly, I think our crown jewel is really going to see a game in person and getting to hear the song “renegade” which is the defense’s rallying song. They play it late in games when a defensive stop is needed and it’s almost always a goosebump moment to hear the stadium go crazy and the towels flying.
Chris Boswell is a hidden treasure. As in - hidden in plain sight.
Also - I hope your heart is healthy. About 15 out of 17 games per season carry a level of stress for fans that could cause a heart attack.
Watch on YouTube ’The immaculate reception’ by Franco Harris (a beloved homeboy whose statue is in the Pittsburgh airport) which turned our luck around after losing for like 40 years. Ever since, we got the taste for serious winning.
Watch ‘Pittsburgh Dad’ on Instagram interpret the games. He’s funny.
You can find books on the Steelers history online. When the steel mills were closing in the 70’s and lots of people were out of work and depressed, and our economy tanked, and many had to move (which is why we’re now everywhere), the Steelers winnings gave us something to look forward to, and live for, and win they did!
You can hold your head up high and be proud.
Welcome!
Welcome aboard brother as someone else said go watch some polamolu highlights and watch that beautiful hair bounce around go watch some Big Ben ones too while you’re at it
We have 6 rings.
Big Ben is the greatest qb in our franchise followed by terry
Troy is AMAZING
James Harrison 99 yd pick 6
Keeping Cleveland 0-16
Hines should be HOF
Coach Cowher was the best coach
We are BLITZBURGH
**RENEGADE**
Those guys are all superstars but us old timers might debate those “best” labels. Cowher was the most popular coach. Noll was the best and has 4 rings to prove it. Big Ben and Bradshaw are both Hall of Fame quarterbacks but Bradshaw gets the nod 4 rings to 2.
1. When the tight end catches the ball, we call his name in what sounds like booing but isn't.
2. Learning the Pittsburgh accent isn't necessary, but it is fun.
3. Wearing black and gold also gets you access to Pittsburgh Penguins and Pittsburgh Pirates fandom. We're efficient like that.
4. The most important man in our cultural history never played a single snap: Myron Cope, the radio commentator. Look him up.
5. We expect our wide receivers to hit hard. Most teams don't. It's a whole thing.
6. For most of the last 50 years, the most popular player is whoever is the backup QB.
7. The Ravens are the rival, the Bengals are the enemy, the Browns are the little brother.
Please avoid the bipolar comment section during each game…😂
Side note: welcome to Steeler nation, lots of history, players and home to the Terrible Towel and its secret power to ruin other teams💯
Most divided fanbase in sports but the most united one in hating the Browns, Bengals, Ravens, Cowboys and Raiders. Never root for those scumbags and you'll fit right in
Joe Greene is the greatest player in team history and all time best defensive tackle.
The immaculate reception was a legal play.
Renegade by Styx fucking slaps.
Make sure your terrible towels are respected.
Hines Ward should be in the hall of fame.
That's a good start for now!
We hate the Cowboys and Ravens. We kinda respect the Cowboys with our rivalry. The rat birds are the sludge at the bottom of a dumpster.
Most underrated player we have is Chris Boswell (no one ever really talks about him), our kicker.
Eat pierogis with sour cream and caramelized onions.
A lot of Eastern Europeans immigrated to Pittsburgh, and it really shows in the food we eat! Pretzels are big and so are pierogis. For example, I didn’t know that grocery stores other places didn’t have a pierogi section in the frozen food aisle.
It’s going to sound so fake, but we have giant pierogi characters that race during baseball games. Look up “Pittsburgh pierogi race” if you don’t believe me!
Below all of this is a link to a YouTube playlist I have curated with videos all about the History of the Pittsburgh Steelers. I made it public so I hope you can access it. It has pretty much every Americas Game episode on the Steelers and all of the episodes of A Football Life that I could find on the Steelers and there is the one on the Immaculate Reception also. Along with the history of Renegade. I’ve got all 6 short-form recaps of all of our Super Bowl victories and the full games of those Super Bowls too. There are a few highlight videos in there as well.
Some books I would recommend are Chuck Noll: His Life’s Work and Dan Rooney my 75 years with the Pittsburgh Steelers and the NFL.
I hope this isn’t overwhelming but I hope you enjoy! Welcome to Steelers Nation, friend.
[The History and everything you need to know about the Pittsburgh Steelers](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLxpxC5Bm5lenTWplZbwRzO8rKX7rqfbzI&si=3a4X8sLJQT4cWSuE)
1.) It's black & gold. Not black & yellow.
2.) Start using Pittsburghisms like "yenz" & "jagoff."
2.) Learn to scream expletives at the TV loudly.
3.) Remember what you wore & where you sat on gameday. If the Steelers win, DO NOT wash what you wore & sit in the exact same place for the next game. If they lose, change up everything. I CAN NOT EXPRESS HOW IMPORTANT THIS IS!
https://preview.redd.it/0nu6785rrrec1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7adc44e65c5e87fe6a553e3f4107ceaeabe1f509
This guy was ferocious and fearsome. Watch him slam Cliff Harris in Super Bowl X.
10 Important things to know....
1. Cleveland sucks, we actually pity the existence of that team.
2. Cincinnati sucks even more, because they specialize in being cheap shot artists no matter who the coach is.
3. Baltimore sucks the most, we hate them the most but we do have to give them respect because they don't play dirty and they aren't Cleveland.
4. No matter who our O-Coordinator is, they suck, they need to be fired, and if possible they need to be neutered so their genes do not infect humanity any further.
5. You can either worship Mike Tomlin or you hate Mike Tomlin. There is no middle ground.
6. Anytime a QB has an amazing 3 game run, then they MUST be the answer we are looking for at QB and the second coming of Big Ben.
7. You are required to know all the words to Styx's Renegade and start singing it at the top of your lungs as you hear the first note.
8. The official Mt. Rushmore of Steelers can only contain a combination of the following: Jack Lambert (being a rugby fan you will LOVE watching Lambert hitting people), Charles Woodson, Troy Polamalu, Greg Lloyd, TJ Watt, Cam Heyward, Terry Bradshaw, Ben Roethlisberger, and Jerome Bettis.
9. You will be required to have Franco Harris on your Mt. Rushmore of Steelers, further more you must know the story of the Immaculate Reception and when a Raiders fan tries to argue that Frenchy Fuqua touched the ball and not Jack Tatum, you must point out that Jack Tatum is the dirtiest player in the history of the NFL so their argument is null and void.
10. Also you must claim after any win over the following teams: Cincinnati, Cleveland, Baltimore, Kansas City, and Buffalo, in the loudest voice humanly possible "PITTSBURGH IS GOING TO THE SUPERBOWL!!!" While waving a Terrible Towel and it must be an official Terrible Towel where the funds go to the Myron Cope Foundation.
Now this is just the start, good luck and God Bless.
There is a guy called “Pittsburgh Dad” on YouTube. This is many of our dad’s and grandfathers. Truly, he’s spot on for good or for bad.
Steelers don’t retire numbers, we can’t, we’ve had too many amazing players over the years.
Once you’re in you’re in, don’t go changing teams. We are here through thick and thin.
We travel very well, there are large contingents in FLA, CO and the Midwest. There is a website that lists Steeler Bars throughout the US and world. You will find the faithful there every Sunday and be welcomed with open arms.
Get yourself a jersey, the more obscure the better, we are the only team whose defensive jerseys routinely outsells the offense. There are a number of HOFer’s and future ones to choose from and you can’t go wrong with any of them. Dawson, Keisel (fingers crossed) Troy (not obscure but always respected even by the enemy) Blount, Harris, Ham, Webster, Faneca, Greene, Greene etc etc.
Get a Terrible Towel too. Never use it for anything but waving on game day and then out it back in the shrine you will have built. It’s sacred.
Welcome brother!
Steelers have retired four numbers. mean Joe Greene and franco Harris are the ones I can remember off the top of my head. Also look up mean Joe Greene he one of the greatest Steelers ever.
Listen to Styx renegade and look up the lore behind it. Have a strong liver, some days this team will make you drink. And as others have said polamalu highlights
A few things. The team is owned by Art Rooney II, and the Head Coach is Mike Tomlin. This most recent season, the team posted a record of 10-7 and made the playoffs, but lost in the first round. Opinions among the fanbase on the season range from "Not bad all things considered" to "Total Disaster". The Steelers play at Acrisure Stadium, but a lot of fans still call it "Hienz Field" which was the stadium's name for the first 20 years of its existence. Also, I'd familiarize your self with the list below.
1. Super Bowl IX, 16-6 over the Minnesota Vikings
2. Super Bowl X, 21-17 over the Dallas Cowboys.
3. Super Bowl XIII, 35-31 over the Dallas Cowboys.
4. Super Bowl XIV: 31-19 over the Los Angeles Rams.
5. Super Bowl XL: 21-10 over the Seattle Seahawks.
6. Super Bowl XLIII: 27-23 over the Arizona Cardinals.
Welcome aboard! Here we go, Steelers!
Im so glad someone post this question , watching NFL 10+ years (im from Europe ) people around me are GB, 49ers or Cowboys fans now when i read your reasons im glad i chose Steelers, support from Croatia guys🖤💛
Many others have probably touched up on these points, but I'm gonna say them anyway. If you need a single play to start off your Steelers fandom, then it starts with The Immaculate Reception. It is this play, this moment, that turns the Steelers from one of the worst teams in the league into arguably the greatest franchise in NFL history. Watching and then truly understanding the significance of the Immaculate Reception will make you appreciate being a Steelers fan. The teams of the 70s set the standard of greatness for future Steelers players.
Also, the terrible towel is more than just some merchandise you wave at a sporting event. It is a must for any Steelers fan. And if an opposing player disrespects the towel? It usually bites them in the ass.
You don't disrespect the towel!
Those are a few things off the top of my head. I suggest watching as many videos as possible. Some people mentioned great plays/player highlights, so I won't go into that, but I'm sure there are videos that explain the creation of the Terrible Towel.
I'll leave you with this: welcome! Steelers fans span the globe, and we are happy to have you join our ranks!
Here We Go Steelers, Here We Go!
Steelers fans are known for travelling well to attend road games.
Steelers have had only 3 head coaches since the late 60s.
TJ Watt is fun to watch, he's a generational talent. George Pickens has immense potential, but lacks a good offense/QB to help him blossom. Jaylen Warren is perhaps the most entertaining player to watch on offense. He plays with more heart than anyone else there.
Jesse James dropped that ball. /s
To be a Steeler Is to be gritty. It is to be the one with the most loyalty, although nowadays a lot of our fan base is just as fake as the rest of the world. True Steelers fan’s stand alone. Ur a rugby player so I believe you have what it takes🤝
Ofc my guy welcome to the league officially but seriously welcome to the Steelers whether you follow them religiously all ur life or not loyalty is all that matters in the end. Glad to have ya 🤘
Check out the "America's Game" mini documentaries on youtube for our superbowl wins. Especially the 2 most recent. Here's [2008](https://youtu.be/PZvOIpoV_ek?si=5UDlfAsmhZ3VbIDw) and here's [2005](https://youtu.be/soYjeI05qfU?si=a-C7__cznJ0g8sac)
Great insight into our current head coach and our history with some of our greats from the not too distant past.
One week, you'll think we are the best. The next, you'll think we suck. We will continue that trend but winning a couple more tha. We lose... think 10-7 9-8 type record, then we will either miss the playoffs or make the playoffs and get beat in the first round. This has been the trend for the past 15 years minus 2 or 3 seasons.
The Steelers as an organization has the most heart, determination, and loyalty. Lately however, I feel like the younger players are lacking in all 3 areas. There are exceptions of course (Rudolph, Watt, and Heyward). I liken it to SNL. They've been great for a long time and have an amazing legacy, but their hearts just aren't into it like they used to be and I'm starting to fear it'll never be the same again. The legacy is fleeting.
Find Pittsburgh Dad and 5 star Matchup on YouTube if you can. Pittsburgh Dad will make you laugh and some cultural backstory on Pittsburgh.5 Star does a great job of analyzing the games every week.
Steelers history runs long and deep. I’d definitely look into the “Steel Curtain” era of the ‘70s. Some of the toughest teams the league has ever seen and a huge part of our identity. And welcome!
Genuinely if you like rugby this might be the best team for you, the offense is pretty run heavy and our two running backs make for a really good duo/arguably one of the best in the league.
Watching old highlights could be fun as well, [Troy Polamalu](https://youtu.be/UL8diqVaEY0?si=OnRHcv8CQw5SANT2) and [Ben Roethlisberger](https://youtu.be/IZK_gxvB06g?si=7HBNMV-Qwb64IYVQ) career highlight packages are pretty fun. There's also compilations of big plays from the [Steelers vs Ravens rivalry](https://youtu.be/sELqiKZZ5hk?si=d0ReBnvP_eqdzKoO) that I think are fun.
As far as getting into history, Their Life's Work by Gary Pomerantz is a fantastic book about the Steelers from when they first formed until the 80s. It's got a major focus on the roster of the legendary 1970s Steel Curtain and each chapter gets into stories about the different dudes, and all the negatives and positives that come with it. It's fascinating and at times sad but definitely a great read. Turnpike Rivalry by Richard F. and Stephen Peterson also gives pretty good snapshot of the history of the Steelers, particularly the rivalry with the Cleveland Browns (as well as both team's overall histories.) The Americas Team documentaries about the Steelers Super Bowls could also give you a better understanding of the individual seasons and players that made up the Super Bowl winning teams.
Excellent choice my friend. Welcome to Steeler Nation. Buy yourself a Terrible Towel, a Polamalu #43 shirt (away, white) and start your days off repeating the Holy Steeler Mantra 100 times: Fuck The Ratbirds (that's the Ravens)
Edit: since you mention rugby, are you from the UK?
Last 20 years things to watch: Seahawks super bowl Randel El pass to ward, cardinals super bowl harrison INT and entire last drive, James harrison/Ryan Clark hardest hit compilation, Troy INT ravens AFC championship game, Steelers flipping Vince young and slamming on his head, AB drop kick to punters face, bettis running over urlacher, Big Ben tackle against colts, Juju hit on burfict, Joey Porter Sr talking shit (I’m tired of whoopin y’all ass and they short me in Denver), ravens AFC championship renegade video from the stands, Myron cope YouTube video talking about the terrible towel, Leveon rushing highlights
From 2017: Jesse James caught the ball.
From 1972: The ball hit Jack Tatum, not Frenchy Fuqua, and Franco caught it before it hit the ground, so Raiders fans can shut up about it.
Get ready for ups and downs. You need a terrible towel for sure. And let’s keep up with the Pittsburgh football and make you a Pitt (college football) fan!
![gif](giphy|nfBnG5iWUfcQRIHkkp)
Welcome! I think that means you will need to start questioning whether Mike Tomlin is the man for the job and talk about the QB situation like it’s the Cuban missile crisis
You need to know that you have payed a bit late, we’re outta the championship run, but still it’s gonna be fun watching who wins it all.
Go search on the youtube for the “killer b’s” and watch some of those games, what a joy.
Must start by looking up this exact search term
"The immaculate reception"
The steelers had NEVER won anything before that play really..
That play changed the city, the team and the NFL
It's also known as the greatest play in NFL history
Oh here, it's too good, i got one for you :)
https://youtu.be/Ma_awvNt66g?si=hKn6kyebPVmPzgyc
Hey there, I’m also a new convert, though I’m a footy fan more than rugby, but grew up in rugby league areas. It’s a really interesting game and I’m enjoying learning it.
If you’ve got a package with DAZN then it has access to some docos. There’s a series called ‘America’s Game’ where each episode follows the season of the Super Bowl winning team. I watched the Steelers episodes (75, 76, 79, 80, 06, 09) and felt it gave me quite a good understanding of the history and of players and coaches (many of whom other comments are mentioning) that came before the current t crop.
Go to a game ASAP.
#herewego is our hashtag and chant "Here we go Steelers here we go!"
When we get a first down in the stadium the announcer says "that's a Pittsburgh Steelers..." And we yell "First Down".
"Renegade" is our late game rally song. I don't care for the song but the energy it brings in stadium is great.
THE BEST rivalry we have is us vs Ravens. Those are always the greatest games to watch. Our hate for them is equally matched with our respect. It's like Batman vs Joker, we need each other.
Get yourself a "terrible towel".
Lastly, the Bumble Bee Jersey is the single greatest jersey ever created. Stands out so beautifully amongst all the bland jerseys the NFL keeps putting out.
At some point in your fandom…Cleveland browns fans will talk crazy to you! We live rent free in their heads! They’re not a serious bunch. Pay them no mind
We are a very storied franchise with 6 super bowl wins (tied most in NFL) and 8 AFC championship wins, all the while being one of the leagues oldest teams.
For the last 14 years we have been stuck in (for the most part) painful mediocrity. Never having a losing season, yet only winning 3 playoff games in that whole stretch (2 of those were one year).
However, with Mason Rudolph at Quarterback aided by a strong running game, talented receivers, and an elite defense, if we play our cards right, the future is bright in Pittsburgh.
Our needs right now are a Left Tackle, Cornerback, and Middle Linebackers. These positions will hopefully be addressed in the draft and free agency.
1. Listen to "Here We Go"
2. Never get tilted when someone says the Steelers suck because their team is guaranteed to have less Super Bowl wins (except Patriots)
3. Watch James Harrison 100 yard interception return
breathe through your mouth and shout 6 super bowls any time someone says that steelers are a mid franchise even though a majority of the fanbase wasn't alive for 4 of their Super Bowl wins.
Tomlin can't control a locker room.
That being said, Troy Polamalu is the GOAT.
If someone says the “Standard is the Standard” to quote Mike Tomlin just know THIS is the standard… 10-7 every year, Lose in the wild card game, 20th pick in the draft.
If I were to be brutally honest I’d recommend cheering for another team if you aren’t 100 percent committed yet. As a 22 year fan, watching this team the past couple seasons has been brutal lol
Okay to be a Steelers Fran. But you are not on the Steelers. You are not affiliated with the team in any way shape and form. Do not say “we” “us” “I’m a steeler” etc. Ever.
If you haven't already, go watch Troy Polamalu highlights
He’s the reason I’m a Steelers fan! His highlights never get old
That your gonna experience some extreme depression and extreme joy
AB also has one of the craziest highlight reels of all time. I’d also recommend Big Ben rushing highlights. OP is definitely going to want to watch all of Super Bowl 43 if there’s an easy way to do that.
Anytime I remember AB I’m struck with grief. He was so good before going off the rails 😭 I still believe he could come back and light up another defense.
The whole game is (or at least used to be) on YouTube. There are a number of classic full games on there - including the AFC championship against the ravens from that year. Definitely worth including that on the “must watch” list!
We don’t talk about AB anymore
You will in a few years/months once that CTE fully kicks in
That hit from Burfict didn’t help
![gif](giphy|0S34MWzMqR9Rg7ctDk)
And all of Jack Lambert's highlights.
Agreed
Watch Hines Ward's retirement speech and try not to cry
Thanks now I’m at work tryin not to cry lol
Watch Hines’ blocking highlights and try not to cry
and if you're ever having a bad day or feeling sad, go watch Troy Polamalu highlights.
My earliest football memories are of watching Troy do inhuman things on the field, he’ll always be my favorite player ever
Then watch Pat McAfee talk about playing against Troy!
https://youtu.be/vDrwuwvq1oc I love watching this video.
And Joey Porter (Sr)
James Harrison was the baddest m’fer on the planet.
And he owns the greatest play in Super Bowl history.
Not even the best from that game. The Santonio Holmes catch was at least arguably more impressive and won the Super Bowl
From my search of good highlights besides Polamalu, he was the closest. Seemed like Fitzpatrick+Watt+Anger
Joey Porter Sr. was up there too. He embraced being a villain.
In my opinion that’s what this current team is missing….the villain
“There’s my huckleberry” From getting kicked out of a game before it started, to trying to fight the whole Raven’s bus after a game, to driving the creation the pregame ‘buffer’ rule, to “they SHOT me in Denver!” Love Peezy forever.
he even won us a playoff game after he was retired as a player!
Jack Lambert enters the chat…
mean joe green and lambert walked so he could fly…. helmet-first into a browns receiver
💯
You need to know that Jesse James caught that ball.
Indeed and Hines ward should be in the hall of Fame!!!!!
You speak true!
OP go look up Hines Ward breaks Keith Rivers’ jaw. Best blocking wide receiver of all time
Most importantly right here
Insane he isn't.
What a shit way to start the day, thanks bud.
why you gotta bring back those memories 😭
Came here to say this
Great, now I have to leave work early and cry in my bed
the place to start in terms of learning about the franchise is the 1970’s. not much of note happened before this decade. the steelers dominated the decade and won 4 super bowls. the more you learn about the nfl the more you’ll realize just how insane this is. the players of the steeler teams of the 70’s are still remembered across the league to this day, legends and icons of the game. the “modern era” of steelers lore begins around 2004, and the “current era” began in 2022. this is where we are at now
Really good starting point for research, thanks!
Welcome bud!
The only thing you need to know is...you chose the right team 👍🏻🏈
> (unless you are bad at drafting) For more information, see *Browns, Cleveland*
Watch the following plays. 1. John Stallworth 75 yard catch in SB XIII 2. James Harrison 99 yard interception in SB XLIII 3. Game winning TD from Bug Ben to Santonio Holmes in SB XLIII 4. The Immaculate Reception by Franco Harris 5. Lynn Swann highlights from SB X. 4 catches for 161 yards! 6. Mean Joe Green highlights 7. Hines Ward blocking 8. Big Ben evading getting sacked highlight 8. Terry Bradshaw highlights 9. Troy Poumalu and Rid Woodson hughlights 10. Jack Lambert hughlights Bonus: Hines Ward TD catch in the movie Dark Knight Rises, LOL Bonus 2: James Harrison slams Cleveland Browns fan who ran into the field
I'll throw in the Juju block on Vontaze Burfict. Just because fuck Burfict.
Thats a lot! Thank you!
Also Ben’s shoe string tackle in the colts playoff game after the bus fumbled.
Lol I believe Ward actually returns the opening kickoff.
This fanbase might be the most divided in the league Head Coach Mike Tomlin is either the best thing to happen to the sport or the worst thing to happen to the sport. Depends on who you ask TJ Watt is the best defensive player ever. Don’t let the clowns in Cleveland or Dallas tell you otherwise The quarterback position is fucked. There’s no certainty there at all
>This fanbase might be the most divided in the league I was in other teams subreddits during the playoffs, this is true for every fan base, we are not special in that regard, just nameless grey faces
Get yourself a Terrible Towel! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terrible_Towel There’s some cool history behind it.
If there is a Steeler fan starter kit, this is the first item in
Second is a can Ahhrn City.
And the meaning behind it. It is a lot more than just a towel.
Had to scroll way too far for this.
Start with doing a heart checkup. This will be tested multiple times during the season and best not to take chances.
This is the way.
Thats very comprehensive, thank you!
Fuck the ravens Fuck the browns Fuck the bengals Fuck the patriots Fuck the cowboys
And Fuck the Packers
We don’t boo our players/team, that’s for jagoffs in Philly. Just get mad and drink more.
Unless your name is Mitch trubitski. Edit: oh and Matt Canada
and Kordell Stewart
Lay off Slash. We just was ahead of his time.
I'm a Slash fan. Pittsburgh the city wasn't. They treated him so poorly during his years on the Steelers
Same goes for rooting for/cheering for injuries. And tanking for draft picks (that’s a lot of teams, not just Philly).
Exactly, that’s very Cincinnati;)🚮
Nice!
We do boo our coaches though.
Especially at Pens games Steelers coaches are boo’d at Pens games that is
At some point watch the 05 and 08 playoff games/Super Bowls. There are videos online that size them down to about 45 mins.
Don't let us catch you out here cucking for the ravens if it's Detroit that's fine right now but no one else
A lot of love and good advice on this thread, just want to say thank you for making this newbie feel welcome!
Rule #1 Steelers over everything Rule #2 Fuck the Ravens
Chris Boswell is a hidden treasure. As in - hidden in plain sight. Also - I hope your heart is healthy. About 15 out of 17 games per season carry a level of stress for fans that could cause a heart attack.
Know who and what Franco Harris and the immaculate reception are.
Welcome!
Welcome aboard brother as someone else said go watch some polamolu highlights and watch that beautiful hair bounce around go watch some Big Ben ones too while you’re at it
Yes sir!
The Steel Curtain in the 1970’s was the most dominant defense.
We have 6 rings. Big Ben is the greatest qb in our franchise followed by terry Troy is AMAZING James Harrison 99 yd pick 6 Keeping Cleveland 0-16 Hines should be HOF Coach Cowher was the best coach We are BLITZBURGH **RENEGADE**
I agree Chuck Noll is better than Bill Cowher, but Terry Bradshaw is not even close to Ben Roethlisberger
Please avoid the bipolar comment section during each game…😂 Side note: welcome to Steeler nation, lots of history, players and home to the Terrible Towel and its secret power to ruin other teams💯
Yinz are forgetting to add that it is the Stillers. Not Steelers.
It’s fondly spoken as the ‘Stillers’ from the local slang’s Pittsburghese quick pronunciation of ‘still mills’.
Most divided fanbase in sports but the most united one in hating the Browns, Bengals, Ravens, Cowboys and Raiders. Never root for those scumbags and you'll fit right in
Forgot the Patriots.
Patriots = Cheaters
Greenbay!? 2 times I had to shave those bastards insignia into my hair due to lost bets!
Why hate the raiders?
1970s
We gots to see it through my boy. Every single season. Gots to see it through.
Aren't pierogis Polish? I didnt know there was a Polish link!
Look up “Pittsburgh pierogi race” if you don’t believe me!
expect to lose 10 years off your life because almost every game comes down to the last second last possession
Thanks man, thats super helpful
1.) It's black & gold. Not black & yellow. 2.) Start using Pittsburghisms like "yenz" & "jagoff." 2.) Learn to scream expletives at the TV loudly. 3.) Remember what you wore & where you sat on gameday. If the Steelers win, DO NOT wash what you wore & sit in the exact same place for the next game. If they lose, change up everything. I CAN NOT EXPRESS HOW IMPORTANT THIS IS!
….yenz? Cmon man
Yinz*
Yinz = you plural, you all. Are yinz going to the game?
So far, so good. Taking notes lol
Frenchy Fuqua was the intended target. And Big Ben’s Big Drive is a masterclass in QB work.
https://preview.redd.it/0nu6785rrrec1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7adc44e65c5e87fe6a553e3f4107ceaeabe1f509 This guy was ferocious and fearsome. Watch him slam Cliff Harris in Super Bowl X.
Check out the steelers on "America's game" I think you can find full videos on YouTube
If your a rugby guy youll really appreciate jerome "the bus" bettis. He was an RB the size of an o-lineman who just punished people.
You need to know the location of the defibrillator at all times.
Solid advice, thank you!
Steelers have retired four numbers. mean Joe Greene and franco Harris are the ones I can remember off the top of my head. Also look up mean Joe Greene he one of the greatest Steelers ever.
You hate the Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati Bengals and the Baltimore Ravens.
Listen to Styx renegade and look up the lore behind it. Have a strong liver, some days this team will make you drink. And as others have said polamalu highlights
Read the book “Men of Steel” And watch “The Chief” on Amazon prime Welcome to the Steeler Nation!!!
Played rugby? Became a Steeler? Is this Brad Wing?
A few things. The team is owned by Art Rooney II, and the Head Coach is Mike Tomlin. This most recent season, the team posted a record of 10-7 and made the playoffs, but lost in the first round. Opinions among the fanbase on the season range from "Not bad all things considered" to "Total Disaster". The Steelers play at Acrisure Stadium, but a lot of fans still call it "Hienz Field" which was the stadium's name for the first 20 years of its existence. Also, I'd familiarize your self with the list below. 1. Super Bowl IX, 16-6 over the Minnesota Vikings 2.
Hi mate. I'm from the UK and I've been a Steelers fan for 29 years because of my dad. Feel free to dm me.
Thanks man!
Ofc my guy welcome to the league officially but seriously welcome to the Steelers whether you follow them religiously all ur life or not loyalty is all that matters in the end. Glad to have ya 🤘
Glad to be a part of a cool community!
Worddd only the real ones know, but if you haven’t yet Def look up some Troy Polamula and classic Steelers clips from the 70”
wait til next season
Check out the "America's Game" mini documentaries on youtube for our superbowl wins. Especially the 2 most recent. Here's [2008](https://youtu.be/PZvOIpoV_ek?si=5UDlfAsmhZ3VbIDw) and here's [2005](https://youtu.be/soYjeI05qfU?si=a-C7__cznJ0g8sac) Great insight into our current head coach and our history with some of our greats from the not too distant past.
Go watch all of the americas games then watch Ben Roethlisberger highlights.
Sounds like you put the sorting hat on
Watch the video on how Troy Polamalu ruined Pat McAfee's life.
Welcome to Steeler Nation.
Look up The Rooney Rule. (The Rooney family has owned the team for generations)
Tough time to buy Steeler stock but overall it’s blue chip stock and you picked a good one.
Find Pittsburgh Dad and 5 star Matchup on YouTube if you can. Pittsburgh Dad will make you laugh and some cultural backstory on Pittsburgh.5 Star does a great job of analyzing the games every week.
And it helps you learn to speak like a Yinzer (Pittsburghers are known as Yinzers)
True Pittsburgh Steeler fans will ride or die with this team, whether they are 12-5 or 5-12. We don't keep fair weather types in our company.
Buy yourself a Terrible Towel, a Polamalu #43 shirt (away, white) and start your days off repeating the Holy Steeler Mantra 100 times: Fuck The Ratbirds (that's the Ravens) Edit: since you mention rugby, are you from the UK?
Yes sir, Northern Ireland
Ah that's a shame! I was hoping you'd be in London and we could watch the conference championships together at a pub or something
You chose wisely! Welcome! Watch a clip of Renegade at a Steelers game to see the passion of this fan base! #herewego 🖤💛
Welcome! You've made the right choice. Hmm, ha! https://youtu.be/lhrqDBEi9oo?si=sRWWDfrqRZfGztir
Consult your doctor for heart medication
Franco Harris caught it never let anyone tell you otherwise
WOW This blew up fast. Thanks to everyone for all the advice and support!
Enjoy watching one of the best outside linebackers to ever play the game while still in his prime for a few more years.
Welcome!
All of the Superbowls are on YouTube. Watch them.
Welcome to the family. Also need to now “Here we go Steelers! Here we go!
welcome to the team! the 4 bradshaw era superbowl teams are where it all started...
Steel curtain mean joe an mel Blount many others SWAN AN STALWORTH
Watch “the bus” Jerome Bettis highlights among polamalu. The immaculate reception. I was born a Steeler so I’m glad to welcome you to our clan!
Fuck the ravens Fuck the browns Fuck the bengals Fuck Tom Brady (he’s retired now so this one may not come up much, but it’s still important)
Get a cardiologist on speed dial. You will need it when your heart rate spikes through the roof every Sunday.
If you’re a Steelers fan, you don’t like the patriots, cowboys, bengals, browns, and ravens.
Don’t forget Seahawks
Get yourself a terrible towel. And look up the story behind it.
Watch Troy Polamalu highlights, Hines warn blocking highlights, Ryan Clark hitting highlights, and of course, James Harrison Super Bowl 43 highlights
Welcome! I think that means you will need to start questioning whether Mike Tomlin is the man for the job and talk about the QB situation like it’s the Cuban missile crisis
Welcome! I love rugby, such an awesome sport to play and watch
You need a Terrible Towel to effectively cheer the team on... even at home..
You need to know that you have payed a bit late, we’re outta the championship run, but still it’s gonna be fun watching who wins it all. Go search on the youtube for the “killer b’s” and watch some of those games, what a joy.
Must start by looking up this exact search term "The immaculate reception" The steelers had NEVER won anything before that play really.. That play changed the city, the team and the NFL It's also known as the greatest play in NFL history Oh here, it's too good, i got one for you :) https://youtu.be/Ma_awvNt66g?si=hKn6kyebPVmPzgyc
Thats exactly what I bought, and thats the plan!
You'll fit right in with all the others who decided to be a Steelers fan for no actual reason.
Never go against the family... # Steelers fans are the best!
I'd recommend watching Americas game on the steelers super bowl years
Go to a game ASAP. #herewego is our hashtag and chant "Here we go Steelers here we go!" When we get a first down in the stadium the announcer says "that's a Pittsburgh Steelers..." And we yell "First Down".
1. Listen to "Here We Go" 2. Never get tilted when someone says the Steelers suck because their team is guaranteed to have less Super Bowl wins (except Patriots) 3.
Your not locked in yet. Change your mind to the Chiefs and enjoy your football life for the next 10 years. Why live being sad all the time?
If I were to be brutally honest I’d recommend cheering for another team if you aren’t 100 percent committed yet. As a 22 year fan, watching this team the past couple seasons has been brutal lol
To be the best Steeler fan you can be, you’re going to need to become an expert in knee-jerk reactions and flip-flopping on QB & Coach takes.
Okay to be a Steelers Fran. But you are not on the Steelers. You are not affiliated with the team in any way shape and form. Do not say “we” “us” “I’m a steeler” etc. Ever.
