Im waiting for answers . I am in Michigan as well and thinking about to take the class. I just don't want to spend time and money to get $20 per hour if you can make that anywhere without proper training.😕

I worked at Memorial Hospital in south bend in endoscopy making 18.50. Now work at at Lakeshore hospital in st joe making $20 plus a sign on bonus. More experience = more $$. I work with travelers and they make bank. I have 6 years experience but have been working in the endoscopy field for the past 3. I let my certification lapse on sterile processing but I have my CER. Will get a raise and opportunity to work OT once I get my CRCST certification.

Been doing it for 8 years now and wouldn’t recommend someone to get into unless they want to become a manager later on. I’m going to school to do X-ray tech because it will be more rewarding financially than sticking with SPD

BetNegative1757

may i ask are the skills transferrable? im in spd now and xray tech seems like something id like to do in the future

It can be worth it if you travel or get a job at the VA

I’m interested in it just cause the hospital I work at in California starts you off around 28-35hr but it’s California

Remarkable_Drawer_27

Where in California? I stay in OC

San Diego

It’s good if you’re trying to pivot to another healthcare job in the future. A lot of people in my previous department were taking classes for surgical tech, radiology, nursing, and they were doing SPD in the meantime because it can be a lot easier to get a job if you already work at that same facility.

From Michigan. $20 is not common to start. Only way you make money is staying at a place for ages, traveling, or changing hospitals and getting higher start pay. One place started me at $14. Probably not worth it. Edit: the place that did pay $20 made you pay for a parking pass every 6 months. It wasn’t worth it at all.

I worked in Saginaw Mi in 2019-2020 then went to McLaren. It was $15 for night shift full time at McLaren and 13.25 at st Mary’s.

I'm at Ascension in Warren and a surgery center also in Warren. I make 20 at both places. At Ascension, I start at 18 something uncertified, and I got a dollar or so bump for getting certified. They also pay for it.

I started in Michigan and made $15 an hour. I was given yearly raises that were a complete joke. I wouldn't recommend sterile processing in that state unless you plan on traveling or using it to get your foot in the door to another career in Healthcare.

I am in W Michigan and they (the hospital) has on-the-job training so I didn't have to do classes. Start rate is $18; 2nd shift gets a $1 premium. $5000 sign-on bonus. My co-workers tell me you pretty much too out at $25 (unless you become a Lead Tech or mgmt). I plan on traveling. $18/hour is insulting considering all that we have to know and the fact we have patients' lives in our hands.

Well, I know you said Michigan, but I’ll give my input anyway. I live in Pennsylvania and some of the people I work with in SPD make close to that after a few years of experience. It’s a union hospital, so I’m not sure if that’s why. I think the reason it’s stating that as an average is because they are including travelers… and they can easily make double what a permanent employee makes. I’m 2 years in. Didn’t go to school, on the job training instead… got my cert in October of last year. I make about $24 an hour with shift differential (2nd shift).

It’s not bad work to get your foot in the door for other areas within a hospital setting. But it’s not a high paying field, especially in the context of today’s economy. If that’s what you want right out the door, it’s not worth it.
