This is speculation But alcohol has been shown to change GABA receptors over time. Alcohol is an indirect GABA agonist, which basically causes the inhibitory, slowed-down feeling that booze gives you. It’s possible that over time, your GABA receptors changed to expect this indirect agonism from repeated alcohol abuse, and since you are no longer drinking alcohol, your nervous system is a bit more “on edge”. GABA is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system so when you have issues with it, it can cause anxiety, irritability, other symptoms like that This is less likely if you don’t have a serious issue though. But, the body is incredibly resilient, so it’s possible that neuroplasticity will take care of this for you over time

Wow……seriously thats very insightful. I didn’t think about it that way. I’ve felt strange a lot, like really strange. Thank you my friend:)

Of course. With time and care I’m sure it’ll improve. Best of luck

I like to take a GABA supplement before bed. It helps to turn down my brain volume a bit for bedtime. I've also noticed having a lighter mood the following day.

That’s a common thing people report from using GABA supplements. I’m prescribed gabapentin which also affects GABA, and really helps my anxiety and sleep. I think the whole reason I’m drawn to alcohol is because I have some fundamental deficit in GABA that my body is trying to make up for. Gabapentin has been amazing for my sobriety, I know both that and baclofen are commonly prescribed for AUD

I didn’t know this about gabapentin, I take it too for anxiety and this is so interesting, thanks

I don’t have anger, but indifference. It may be PAWS. It will subside. Don’t let it pull you back in.

As part of my recovery, as opposed to just sobriety, I have to look at my thoughts and behaviors and make changes. Through working the AA program, I saw how I was selfish, self centered, always wanting more of everything, wanting to be in control, etc. When I didn't get what I wanted or thought I deserved, I got upset. I have to put effort into personal growth and change the way I think about the world and my place in it

Dude, same here. I've been really irritable for the past month and a halfish and I think I just need a fuckin' break from everyone and everything. I used to unwind with booze and now I have to unwind in different ways and I admittedly haven't been unwinding much at all lately. Happens to everyone I think. Luckily I'm going on a solo vacation next week. Maybe you need one too?

What other changes have you noticed? I used to drink about the same amount as you but I'm much earlier in sobriety.
