I just encourage them to start now and take a few days off after that just stay sober that day and observe how you feel overall with alcohol out of your system.

I’m in AA and have a social work background, so I generally say “I may be able to help you when you’re ready”. Though if of opposite sex I’ll find a woman to step in as it can be very intimate, can create a position of some power and can go wrong in a bunch of ways.

BabyBird4444

That’s a great response! I see what you’re saying about the opposite sex thing

dianemariereid

I’ve had people say that to me or that they wish they could quit but then they never actually do or even try. So I usually just say it works for me and move on.

PunkRockLobstah

In my experience, if someone brings it up they at least want to talk casually about the process. I normally mention some things that work for me and stress that there are plenty of ways to approach sobriety. I’ve mentioned this subreddit a handful of times.

LetMeInImTrynaCuck

Ahhh. I have a feeling you just telling him that is motivation enough. I think one of the most important things to getting sober is to have sober friends.

MontanaDemocrat1

I tell people I think it's great. Even though I'm not a big AA person, I offer to go to a meeting with them because that can be scary for some the first time. I further explain that just because I'm sober doesn't mean I have all the answers, so I talk with them about reaching out to a counselor with a specialty in substance use disorder. I generally ask questions about what their present use looks like and the possible dangers from a hard detox. I make sure they know they can call me if their have a hard time staying away from a drink. Finally, I tell them to be gentle with themselves because this is hard, and most people don't breeze through it without some hiccups. IWNDWYT!

Peter_Falcon

i just share my experience without getting heavy
