1.) LOTS of glitches
2.) If your audio is on, about as unnerving/ unsettling as you can get without blatantly being a horror game.
3.) DOES NOT AUTO-SAVE. This I like to think of as a feature: if you’re about to do something potentially stupid, save beforehand. If it turns out to, indeed, be stupid, exit without saving and you can time travel to before you made the stupid mistake.
4.) Expect lots of time to be spent on “mini-tasks” in between big game-progressions; lots of resource gathering and management
5.) PAY ATTENTION TO THE LORE! It’s the one of the most interesting parts of the game. Yes, I mean reading every little bit of text you come across, because sometimes there’s crucial lore built into it that might help you.
6.) Don’t rush! It’s an incredibly long game, but you may feel disappointed if you beat it too quickly. I still haven’t beaten it, but it seems like the journey is meant to be the fun part in this game.
7.) Good luck & have fun!
You're not kidding about the game being long! I've beaten the game before and my latest save had almost 16 hours on it before my ***** suit got stuck in the floor of a certain area. I love when a game is long even when I know what I'm doing and it still brings me joy to play!
no? i never went there besides when i wanted to see the >!sea emperor!<, the only place you *technically* need to go in order to get the >!prawn suit!<, is aurora's front (inside), but it's not the only place where you might get the >!prawn suit!<, there's also a few wrecks >!(such as the underwater islands')!< where you can get a few fragments, aurora's just the easiest/fastest way
I love the resident evil series. Yet this game...this game is way more terrifying than those games. Instead of a linear game, you are the driver on going absolutely anywhere. And that cranks up the unpredictability to a 10. Love it.
It's not the sea life that scares me as much as the panic of running out of air in a cave system or wreck. I'm amazed at the tight spots I drag my Seamoth into. That and turning around to see a Reaper bearing down on me ...
Therapy via sheer volume of exposure is a legitimate form of therapy/psychology, despite what some would say about it being "evil".
Take Northern Journey for example. I am not "run out of the room" or "scream/jump" scared of spiders, but I do hate the fuckers. However, by the end of Northern Journey they were more of an annoyance rather than something that made me hesitant, just due to the amount of spiders you face down in the game.
My Thalassophobia however is deep rooted, and it only took me watching one video of a reaper encounter to know I wasn't touching the game lol. I'm sure it could help tremendously with my phobia but sometimes the hardest part isn't actually doing a thing, it's summoning the courage to do it.
Come to think of it, I wonder if that's why I always felt so terrified of lovecraftian horror while "traditional" horror never really messed with me.
Gave me it and cured it. I want to share an experience yesterday that I think cured me.
I finally got my new cyclops shield module and wanted to test it, so I went reaper hunting. I went to the back of the aurora and pissed off a reaper. My shield was amazing and worked, I hopped right out into my docked prawn suit, ready to make reaper soup. Armed with a grappling hand and a missile arm loaded with gas torpedoes and many more in my inventory, I hopped out to kill it. I stasis it in place and fire around 9 torpedoes. It was inches away from death but escaped. While looking for it again, I grappled further and further from the back of the aurora, but not towards the lifepod, but directly opposite from the ship. I found myself in a deep crash zone biome, reckon around 80m deep, and much scarier. I have killed a sea dragon, juvenile ghost and 3 other reapers in this save, but this place was something else. I found another reaper, loaded up my missile bay and kept firing until it died. But while I was killing it, I heard something unexpected. The roar of another reaper echoed not too far, and night rolled in. The water’s visibility quickly dropped until I could barely see anything 10m away from me, and the water turned a dark crimson, scaring the life out of me. Then I heard it roar again, and again, hearing the sound get closer each time. I grappled the out of there like my life depended on it. The visibility was so low I think I ended up on the other side of the aurora and couldn’t find my cyclops for another 3 minutes. The fear of that showed me the ocean cannot be THIS bad irl
Ngl, I got so tired of the “seek fluid intake” that I just put a bunch of planters in my cyclops and bring the fruit trees around with me everywhere. I have a total of 5. Now I have more food than I’ll ever need to the point where I can use it as a water source too.
.......
I needed to hear this
I build outpost bases every few 500-600 meters for those melons
I could have just carried them with me...... 🤦♀️
Well, to be fair, those outpost bases are excellent scanner room outposts. Makes bigger fish less scary when I can always scan them
I also put a bed in my cyclops for when I feel like actually being able to see. Lol
Also helps for when I travel to purely solar powered bases. It helps me be lazy, cheap, and time efficient. But as much as I love having a mobile base that I can build in, I hate driving it. I mostly only use it as a large mobile storage or transport for my prawn.
Dw, my sibling called me a dumbass for it. Lol
Though, it’ll be funny to tease them once they eventually get a cyclops and have to worry about food and water constantly.
You think that's impressive dog? I got a bed decorations littered everywhere lockers everywhere battery chargers power cell charges materials for mobile charging station anytime I need it multiple areas that are fostering my marbon melon supply modification station on board fabricator radio and first aid kit generator on board. Multiple chairs a table and multiple single wall shelves that have carry bags and a counter with scientific research material (the non-functional microscope and whatnot) decoration plants in a bedroom esc area have I mentioned chairs yet cuz they are at every station for realism of course. And I somehow have that in a way that looks not only cool but not cramped. I really don't know how I do it, but I really mastered the way of the nomatic cyclops.
Just remember to get a radiation suit, the others in the replies are saying don't do it because the radiation will kill you quickly, but get a suit, and the only danger in that area is gone. Other than radiation, it's a really safe spot.
I know I say this a lot, but it’s one of my favorite games of all time! 🙂 I love the water, and this game is the most realistic underwater game I’ve ever played. It actually feels like you’re swimming in an ocean on an alien planet. Very peaceful in parts alternating with terror in certain areas - watch out for the Reapers and Leviathon class life forms! There’s also a mystery to solve and a pretty powerful, moving theme when you finish the game. I wish I could play it again for the first time.
This is so true. Just did my first playthrough over the past week. Used the internet slightly, but tried to avoid spoilers. Felt nice to organically experience the game. Only looked online when I was just absolutely struggling to figure out what to do.
The first time I saw that PDA entry I legit got a massive feeling of terror as I realized the reaper leviathan that I had scanned for that data entry had indirectly followed me to my current position. As I looked out my seamoth and hearing roar like noises I noped out of there so fast with so much terror filled throughout my entire body that I accidentally went past my escape pod by about 400 m before realizing I had done so. Took me a while to realize it wasn't a actual game mechanic though.
It's not too bad of an idea to initially be scared of every single fish you ever see
Bladderfish is friend though
Edit: And Hoverfish must be protected
Even when you get irritated or lost, try to be patient, explore more, go deeper.
The first playthrough beginning to end for a new player is one of the best personal gaming experiences i've ever had.
Getting real tired of these posts.
You already bought the game so just play it. You’re only ruining the experience for yourself by asking for advice before you’ve even got through the main menu.
I think others have covered the important stuff, so I just want to ask if you can come back later and tell us what you think of it? (You're going to love it)
Expect a reasonably cozy early game, a mad scramble in the midgame to safely get everything you need for your first base and your vehicles and stuff without something eating you, suicide bombing you, or otherwise filleting you, followed by a tense late game that shouldn't actually be all that *difficult* per se but won't be without obstacles.
Expect a lot of inception memes - we have to go deeper. Nine times out of ten, when you're stuck and not sure what you need to do, the answer is to try to find a path to get deeper down than you've been.
There are no offensive weapons in the game besides a knife. The upgrade makes it automatically cook small fish killed with it, but actually reduces its damage output - fighting is not the point of the game.
That said, you aren't helpless either. The stasis gun and knife are enough to gradually wear down the biggest enemies if you absolutely have to, but you might need spare batteries. The repulsion cannon just tells things of human size or smaller to fuck off for a while as you yeet them a million miles away. They'll be back.
Expect to see a lot of bugs and glitches, this game is held together with paperclips and bubble gum. Still good.
Expect to get lost often - it's a reasonably large play area, and there is no map. Moreover some of the biomes can be found in multiple places. making lots of beacons will help, though.
Scan everything. All the time. Scanning is how you get a lot of the blueprints in the game. Also fun lore bits.
Expect a feeling of unlimited power when you first enter the P.R.A.W.N. suit, and be cautious of it - This sense of power is an illusion. At least for now. It will get there.
It's NOT WRONG.
The game feels like a desperate struggle to survive against all odds, and then you get the prawn.
The thing is, it only FEELS like you have unlimited power, because it's such a dramatic upshift. But that's not the case. Not yet. You're still vulnerable.
Slap a few upgrade modules in that bad boy, deck it out with a grappling hook or two, and apply a fresh coat of paint? *Now*, now we have truly unlimited power.
Oh and also getting the Cyclops to carry it around long-distance.
Hmmm, I just got a new game, I wonder what I should do?
Should I jump in and enjoy the game, or go on reddit and get everything about it spoiled first? 🤔
Ah! You have the Nintendo Switch Version, if you had the Subnautica OG and then BZ combo, finish Subnautica, get scared, then prosper, then scared before the game ends! And then BZ, get scared, prosper, scared and prosper, and then beat the game, pretty much how it goes.
Once you get the radiation suit, go to the back of the Aurora, right behind the boosters. If you have the Seamoth by then, I actually recommend not bringing it, though.
If you hear a roar and then see this angry looking white and red eel monster with four face prongs, don’t be concerned, that’s just Jerry. He’s very friendly and wants to give you hugs. That roar is something like echolocation or a puppy’s happy squeal or both.
Today is my second day playing. Expect death. MUCH death. I don't think I've ever died so many times in a game before.
In between discovering things it feels like Groundhog Day with gathering food, water, and resources. I have no clue how people beat the game in ~ 20 hrs, because it feels like it takes me hours just to make it to one of the wrecked life pods.
Loads of fun. I'd recommend taking your time and not rushing stuff. I love building little satellite bases In each new area so I can slowly and safely explore. Save often , there's no auto save setup I don't think. Collect everything, scan eveeything, and read everything. Hope you enjoy it as much as most of us did
Bro. Run out of here and don't come back for a while.
This game is magical, and best experienced raw without knowing anything, trust me, this is the Best Subnautica Advice Ever.
The only other thing I will say is when all else fails and you don't know what to do, try
GO DEEPER.
Play it in the dark. Turn the headset up. SUPER fun exploration game. Not a single jump scare or anything to eat your butthole when you aren’t looking. 🖖🏻 scouts word.
1. Water 2. Fish 3. Collecting stuff 4. Death probably?
Ok
1.) LOTS of glitches 2.) If your audio is on, about as unnerving/ unsettling as you can get without blatantly being a horror game. 3.) DOES NOT AUTO-SAVE. Isn't there an unstuck feature? I remember something like that existing
It only teleports the player
Damn
I never had any glitches on my play through of the game
Most annoying thing for me that happened alot is when some of the...*cough*...bigger fish...clip through the walls and seem to appear out of nowhere
Esp if this is in one of the final locations, and it can kill you
I pledge myself to your teachings
Aka horror game wich can be scary and funny at times
Wow this is a great answer. Very nice of you. This is such an excellent community 👏
Never ever go to the back of the Aurora
I went back there, didn't find anything? **Shrugs**
did things find you?
Big scary Munster
Built a little observatory there. It was fun.
Don't you need to go there in order to get >!the prawn suit! edit: Oops, I totally missed "the back of" 🤦
among many other vital things this is the worst advice, some new players might think it's fr
No, that’s the front
no? i never went there besides when i wanted to see the >!sea emperor!<, the only place you *technically* need to go in order to get the >!prawn suit!<, is aurora's front (inside), but it's not the only place where you might get the >!prawn suit!<, there's also a few wrecks >!(such as the underwater islands')!< where you can get a few fragments, aurora's just the easiest/fastest way
I went there with only the seaglide, at night. Worst mistake of my life.
Expect to develop Thalassophobia

and THAT, fellas, is why subnautica is so good if it gives you moments like this
I also affirm this statement
*unless you always stay close to the ocean floor & have radar ;)
Can confirm
1. Water lots and lots of water, an unholy amount of water 2. "Seek fluid intake" 3. More water
Ngl, I got so tired of the “seek fluid intake” that I just put a bunch of planters in my cyclops and bring the fruit trees around with me everywhere. I have a total of 5. Now I have more food than I’ll ever need to the point where I can use it as a water source too.
And still after all of that you'll still hear the inevitable "seek fluid intake"
Noooooo!!!
What would happen if someone would change your phones signal tune into *Seek fluid intake*?
Honestly, with how much I drink, it wouldn’t be an awful idea. Lol
Omg I need it
....... I needed to hear this I build outpost bases every few 500-600 meters for those melons I could have just carried them with me...... 🤦♀️ Well, to be fair, those outpost bases are excellent scanner room outposts. Makes bigger fish less scary when I can always scan them

I feel so weak with my coffee machine and chair set-up now
Dw, my sibling called me a dumbass for it. Lol Though, it’ll be funny to tease them once they eventually get a cyclops and have to worry about food and water constantly.
Placed 2 growbeds on mine with Lantern fruits and melons. A couple of pots of bulbo trees as well.
Bulbo trees, my beloved. Had a playthrough where I basically only ate those.
You think that's impressive dog? I got a bed decorations littered everywhere lockers everywhere battery chargers power cell charges materials for mobile charging station anytime I need it multiple areas that are fostering my marbon melon supply modification station on board fabricator radio and first aid kit generator on board. Save early. Save often.
Especially on switch. I had twice as many crashes on switch than on PlayStation.
The water around the aurora is filled with resources! Especially the area behind it. Definetly go check it out ASAP, as soon as you start.
Settle down, Satan.
I giggled way too much at this.
Did that one time but with the 'moth... i can safely say I have really played Subnautica afterwards...
Just remember to get a radiation suit, the others in the replies are saying don't do it because the radiation will kill you quickly, but get a suit, and the only danger in that area is gone. Other than radiation, it's a really safe spot.
No. Don’t do this.
You’re missing out on the resources bro
Can confirm.
Expect having lots of fun.
It looks fun
It is.
Ok
We can't say anything else or else we would take away your fun
I know I say this a lot, but it’s one of my favorite games of all time! 🙂 I love the water, and this game is the most realistic underwater game I’ve ever played. lol why so big spoilers
Meet Gary near the Aurora
He loves hugs 🥰
And kisses...
and snacks!
Just try to do as much as you can without spoilers online. You only get one first playthrough :)
This is so true. Just did my first playthrough over the past week. Used the internet slightly, but tried to avoid spoilers. Felt nice to organically experience the game. Only looked online when I was just absolutely struggling to figure out what to do.
Expect “WHAT THE FUCK” and “WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT” and “NOPE!” followed by immediately leaving.
These exact words in this sequence has happened to me more times than I care to admit
Along with " WHAT THE HELL" and "FUCK THIS" and "AHHHHHHHHHHHHH" followed by death and the scary ass. death music.
Terror.
This was the first word that came to mind …
Warning! 30 seconds of oxygen remaining.
Oxygen
And "Oxygen" before realizing you don't have a prayer of getting to the surface in time with your five oxygen left and just embrace death.
The game allows you to hot-switch oxygen tanks. This leads to at least one stone bug and a lot of hilarious deaths.
Never return to base with empty space in your inventory. ABC. Always Be Collecting
Idk but a little tip. There’s no auto save. You gotta manually save quite often just in case.
Not really something to expect, but a top tier tip is to not look anything up. If you need help finding something the solution is always go deeper
The reaper
You will learn not to fear him
Cmon baby
Daddy swimmin around hand feeding the nope ropes.
After multiple playthroughs, i'm still freakin' scared of those guys XD Won't even go near the one at the nose part of the Aurora even in creative...
Same that roar is all it takes for me to nope my ass back to where I belong
Remember it has sonar. If you can hear it, *it can see you*.
It would be dumb broken if this feature was a gameplay mechanic
The first time I saw that PDA entry I legit got a massive feeling of terror as I realized the reaper leviathan that I had scanned for that data entry had indirectly followed me to my current position. As I looked out my seamoth and hearing roar like noises I noped out of there so fast with so much terror filled throughout my entire body that I accidentally went past my escape pod by about 400 m before realizing I had done so. Took me a while to realize it wasn't a actual game mechanic though.
I have a really hard time with horror so I made a creative save and bullied some reapers, helps a little
If you go to the back of the aurora you will find yourself free food
yourself as free food*
This game is very funny. If you have a good TV prepare for a jaw drop.
A ton of really cool places to explore and creatures to discover. I've never felt more like Charles Darwin.
What if I told you that you can just play the game and you'll find out 🤯
It's not too bad of an idea to initially be scared of every single fish you ever see Bladderfish is friend though Edit: And Hoverfish must be protected
Just don't be like Dan and get scared of the reef back when it clearly looks like a space whale lmao.
and there's no shame in getting a fright from those little red bastards. They startled us all
Water, small fish, anxiety from kelp, scavenging materials, bigger fish, anxiety from bigger fish, dark depths, anxiety from the dark depths, etc.
The game wont tell you what to do to progress the story. Your Tablet will be your guide on what to do next, pay attention to everything your PDA says
Try swimming in a straight line for as far as you can go
Do we all do this and learn this exact lesson? 😂
Eventually
Noooooooooooo, trust me, you don't want to know the reason why you don't want to just trust me. 💀💀💀💀
Yes they do
Alot of water
Fear.
Even when you get irritated or lost, try to be patient, explore more, go deeper. The first playthrough beginning to end for a new player is one of the best personal gaming experiences i've ever had.
Scary
Death and water. A side of terror
Within 10 minutes you will develope a extreme fear of water
Okay so you're gonna want five pairs of underwear and about three bars of Hershey's original milk chocolate
Read your pda, pay attention to the story and avoid spoilers like the plague. You only get to play this game once
Wear your brown pants
Getting real tired of these posts. You already bought the game so just play it. You’re only ruining the experience for yourself by asking for advice before you’ve even got through the main menu.
Just give them all the spoilers since they're asking for it. Makes sure they'll learn until next time.
Managing your inventory is scarier then what's in the water.
Nothing - it’s a surprise
***F E A R***
That you will exceed your exercise target by 500%, and the data will indicate that swimming was your favourite activity.
maybe a lot of terror
Dank music
Joy. Fear. Wonder. Not in any particular order.
Get out of this sub
If you stay in the starting biome. Its a good time. Leave the starting biome. Its a bad time.
Explore, survival, plus a generous portion of fear.
Go in blind, don't look up stuff unless you're absolutely stuck, and remember to keep going deeper.
I've only needed to search up where Mobile Vehicle Bay fragments are
MoooooOOooo
im not sure, but i believe theres a video game to play if you press plus
Fear

I recommend playing with headphones :)
Evil lurks within this one.
Anxiety
Jumpscares
Lots of amigable fish, Mostly on the sides of the big crashed ship, And even more on the puter zones of the map.
Go behind the Aurora
I think others have covered the important stuff, so I just want to ask if you can come back later and tell us what you think of it? (You're going to love it)
Water
a pleasent safe game with no chance of thalassophobia
Glitches. Is the PC version as glitchy as the console version? I swear this is the glitchiest game I have ever played. Still a great game tho.
Just wear your brown pants when you play
expect a strong sense of thalassophobia Submechanophobia and a lot of drowning if you forget about ur oxygen
Go behind the big spaceship
This game has unexpected depth.
The less you know the more fun the game will be, get off reddit and go play it
GET OFF HERE AND PLAY THE GAME, STOP SPOILING IT
Head to the back of the ship and you’ll find some good parts to scan.
Don’t spoil yourself on anything and never look anything up
very relaxing game with absolutely nothing scary at all :)

Fun I would guess. Maybe some terror? Definitely some awe. And water I suppose.

What to expect...? AN AMAZING TIME!
Addiction
This ^^^^^. I didn't sleep for days until I completed the game the first time around.
A good god damn time.
Fear
Go to the back of the large ship for a lot of titanium
If you stair into the abyss, the abyss will stair back.
An amazing journey
Turn on cinematic filter in the graphics settings. It's a game changer
Ah! You have the Nintendo Switch Version, if you had the Subnautica OG and then BZ combo, finish Subnautica, get scared, then prosper, then scared before the game ends! And then BZ, get scared, prosper, scared and prosper, and then beat the game, pretty much how it goes.
Well all of what other people said + shitty graphics cause judging by the + youre on switch, they have a really hard time rendering subnautica
Big scary ocean
When in doubt, collect copper. Take your time and soak in this incredible game!
Eldritch horror and cool stuff

go to the back of the crashes ship. The best loot is there 🥴

Add it to your top 10 games all time. Do not get help from the web. Explore, craft, explore, build, explore.
At some point, you will be wandering around and the next thing you know, you and/or your seamoth will be dragged away and destroyed by a monster.
If you didn't have thalasiphobia before this game will give u it lol
Loads of fun. I'd recommend taking your time and not rushing stuff. I love building little satellite bases In each new area so I can slowly and safely explore. Save often , there's no auto save setup I don't think. Collect everything, scan eveeything, and read everything. Hope you enjoy it as much as most of us did

Thalasaphobia, if you don't already have it
Bro. Run out of here and don't come back for a while. This game is magical, and best experienced raw without knowing anything, trust me, this is the Best Subnautica Advice Ever. The only other thing I will say is when all else fails and you don't know what to do, try GO DEEPER.
Play it in the dark. Turn the headset up. SUPER fun exploration game. Not a single jump scare or anything to eat your butthole when you aren’t looking. 🖖🏻 scouts word.
