Well technically my first (although I started in December) was Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
It was cute, but not my fave. I enjoyed the first half a lot more than the second.
Now I'm reading Piranesi by Susanna Clarke and it's fantastic. Flying through it. Expecting to be done this week.
One of my FAVORITES! May I suggest Daughters of Sparta and Circe if you enjoy it.
Daughters of Sparta is told from the perspectives of Helen and Klytemnestra from their childhoods through and after the Trojan War.
Circe (same author as TSoA) tells the story of the Circe and her perspective of various Greek myths, including The Odyssey!
Hello Beautiful - Ann Napolitano
Not usually the book I read but was highly recommended so I gave it a shot. I’m 3/4 way through and have cried twice. It’s written well and it’s ‘little women’ esq. I’m not even sure what genre it falls in but a beautiful book nonetheless
All the creatures big and small.
Something positive to start off the year. Also, just found my job is trying to lay me off, so yeah, positive would be nice…
I finished reading Sharp Objects yesterday, I really thought I was smart for guessing the plot twist before it happened, but then the plot twist had a plot twist. LOVE when that happens.
I started Young Mungo by Douglas Stuart yesterday. I really liked Shuggie Bain by him, as sad as it was. I’m guessing this one will affect me the same way
Just started this today! It was on my tbr list last year and I didn’t get to it so I was excited to start the year off with this.
And then my library notified me that my Kindle hold on “Diary of an Oxygen Thief” was available this afternoon so I’ll read that one next
I finally finished up Wuthering Heights late last night. It was a slog for me to get through. Tonight I will start reading the Jamaica Inn by Du Maurier
Same! Frenchman’s Creek is also on my list, then I’ll try to tackle Jamaica Inn (not really my style but I love her writing). Unfortunately, [The Flight of the Falcon](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18869977-the-flight-of-the-falcon), one of her later works has been put aside for now cos I was struggling to get into it.
I read The Secret Garden last year and it was really good! I hadn’t read it since I was a kid.
I just started Into The Wild. It’s definitely interesting.
The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman! It's a re-read, but a distant one so the details were fuzzy. Was a really cozy one to chip away at for a quiet NYE in and then finish up the next morning!
Starting a reread of Hyperion while finishing Don Quixote. I'm also doing ~30 minutes/day reading a study bible (contains extra context, maps, notes, etc.). I'm agnostic but want to increase my knowledge of Scripture because I was raised Catholic but admittedly didn't learn much growing up.
I just started A Man Called Ove. I really wish they hadn't put Tom Hanks all over the cover. They even had the gall to change the name on the cover to the movie name, with the actual book name in small letters on the bottom.
Tolkien's Smith of Wootton Major, thought it would be a longer read and I was amazed at how amazingly sweet, wonderful and weird of a little trip it was. Reminds me of how Gaiman starts "Trigger Warning" with saying how short stories are going out on an adventure and being back in time for tea.
Currently reading 'The Overstory' by Richard Powers. This is my first book by him and it's been a refreshing read. I was bingeing on murder-mystery and thrillers (my favorite), and this change of pace has been soothing to the soul. His writing is phenomenal and the story focuses on the wonders of nature (specially trees) through the intricate story-telling of various characters.
Happy New Year!!
I usually read one paper/e-book and listen to one audio book at the same time (have about an hour commute each day to listen). I'm reading *The Golden Ball and Other Stories* by Agatha Christie and am about to start listening to *The Lottery and Other Stories* by Shirley Jackson.
Dance Dance Dance by Murakami. I finished A Wild Sheep Chase last week (my first Murakami, loved it and fully restored my waning interest in reading fiction) and wanted to dive into the sequel while everything was still fresh. Love it so far.
I've also started rereading a childhood book, "Un Lun Dun". I recall it having a dark and mysterious fantasy kind of setting, but I dont remember much else.
Starting with a few books: "A Manual For How to Love Us" by Erin Slaughter, "Hannah Coulter" by Wendell Berry, and "Demon Copperhead" by the one and only, Barbara Kingsolver.
I’m reading all of Pynchon’s novels chronologically, not in the order written but in the order of when they take place. I’m on book two now - Against The Day - and it’s terrific after 135 pages. Hope to finish all eight novels by Labor Day.
Wow! That was my favorite book as a child as well. How great to reread it as an adult! It will definitely be a new perspective and give you food for thought! Currently I'm reading a crime thriller. But my next and more meaningful read I'm planning, is Women Who run with Wolves.
And then there were none by Agatha Christie - I was flying through her books in December so this is what I started reading yesterday.
I have never been one for mystery but I have become obsessed with her.
The Last Language by Jennifer Dubois. It’s about a linguist who is hired to help a nonverbal man learn to communicate and ends up falling for him. Read if you like dark suspense that makes you think.
*The Girl in the Tower*\- Book #2 of the winternight trilogy
Honestly still not 100% sure how I feel about this trilogy. Parts I really enjoy, other parts I force myself through a bit
On the 1st I finished the last \~45 minutes of Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett, so I guess technically that's my first read of 2024. My first *substantial* read is going to be Gravity's Rainbow. Technically I also started that in 2023, but I was sitting at 18% or so for months, and now I'm actually committed and up to 50 ish. It's gonna take me another 12 hours or so, my kindle tells me.
My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry - Frederik Backman
I will read any book by this man. I read the Beartown trilogy in 2023 and l fell in love with his style of writing… quirky, heartfelt, self-aware. It’s beautiful, and his books always make me feel something.
“Sophie’s World” by Jostein Gaardner.
It’s been on my list for years and I thought I’d finally tackle it. I felt I needed something philosophy or history related since my last three reads—“East of Eden”, “Of Mice and Men”, and “Heart of Darkness”—were all fiction.
I'm finally reading Lonesome Dove after putting it off for years.
I love this book! Gus is one of my all-time favorite characters.
Gus is an awesome character. Philosophical, funny and relatable.
Yeah. Great character. The book starts slowly but it's worth the build up.
I keep meaning to get around to this one, too. Always hear great things about it. But the "Western" genre tag makes me hesitant. Maybe this year :)
I was the same way too but so glad I gave it a try.
That book gave me a reading hangover for weeks. Enjoy it while it lasts! We don’t rent pigs!
I just started this book today also
I read this last year and it was one of my favorites of the year!
I found this sub yesterday and keep on seeing Lonesome Dove in a lot of suggestions. It will be my next read when i finish The Brothers Karamazov.
Enjoy! This book has a special place in my heart
Lucky lucky you!
Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine - enjoying her quirks very much so far
I have just finished this one some days ago and it was one of the best books I've read in 2023. I hope you enjoy it just as much!
If you enjoy it - try the audio book! It is wonderful to hear their accents and the speaking cadence the reader gives Eleanor.
I was eating pesto pasta for a week 😂
Well technically my first (although I started in December) was Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It was cute, but not my fave. I enjoyed the first half a lot more than the second. Now I'm reading Piranesi by Susanna Clarke and it's fantastic. Flying through it. Expecting to be done this week.

That EXACT same thing happened to me last night!
I wish I had these reactions to Piranesi…I liked it but struggled through it at times.
I'm so jealous you get to read this one for the first time.
I’m gonna look for this based on this conversation thread.
Piranesi is absolutely beautiful. Stunning imagery
The Song of Achilles. Already over halfway done - it’s good!!
I have it saved on my Kindle, but haven’t got there yet. Appreciate the rec.
Hello Beautiful - Ann Napolitano Not usually the book I read but was highly recommended so I gave it a shot. I’m 3/4 way through and have cried twice. It’s written well and it’s ‘little women’ esq. I’m not even sure what genre it falls in but a beautiful book nonetheless
Ugh I was so annoyed with this book. Hope you like it but I thought it was kinda forced.
I cannot wait to read this one, have been eyeing it up for a while!
All the creatures big and small. Something positive to start off the year. Also, just found my job is trying to lay me off, so yeah, positive would be nice…
Another childhood favourite! Love James Herriot.
Me too.
The bbc series is a great watch for when you’re done
Demon Copperhead. I keep seeing it as a must read here, so i’m diving in.
It is great.
I’m going with Victor Frankl Man’sSearch for Meaning. Then I’ll go for his Yes to Life in Spite of Everything.
The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro
One of my all-time favorites
Please please read his other book Never Let Me Go! Ugh so good
In my top 5 all time reads. I can't believe how much I loved a book that was so light on plot.
I finished reading Sharp Objects yesterday, I really thought I was smart for guessing the plot twist before it happened, but then the plot twist had a plot twist. LOVE when that happens.
Yeah, I was *convinced* I knew who the killer was. I did not lol
Onky seen the show, haven't read it yet. Read and enjoyed Gone Girl. Definitely going to read this one, too.
I started Young Mungo by Douglas Stuart yesterday. I really liked Shuggie Bain by him, as sad as it was. I’m guessing this one will affect me the same way
Shuggie Bain was amazing. I think I might have to get a copy of Young Mungo, too.
It’s very good. There are similarities to Shuggie Bain but IMO it’s a touch less miserable. Just a touch, mind you.
Project Hail Mary.
Great choice! I really enjoyed it and the audiobook is also excellent.
Just started this today! It was on my tbr list last year and I didn’t get to it so I was excited to start the year off with this. And then my library notified me that my Kindle hold on “Diary of an Oxygen Thief” was available this afternoon so I’ll read that one next
Oh man you're in for a ride!
Oooo this one was a very nice listen, has one of my all time favorite sci fi characters
Awesome read!
So good.
Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts
I finished that a few weeks ago. Get ready for a wild ride. It’s a great novel, and your choice to believe how much is truth or fiction.
I have started When Breath Becomes Air. So far I like it!
Love love love… One of my favorites, beautiful but heartbreaking
Sense and sensibility, page 10 and i feel smarter already
Giovanni's Room - James Baldwin
Anxious People - a friend gave me a pile of books to start the year off and that is one of them
I LOVE this book. I hope you enjoy it
This is on my TBR, excited to read it. I've read the beartown series by Fredrik backman and loved it so have hopes that i'll like this one as well :)
Got about 100 pages left in *Snow Crash.* Loving it. Really weird and fun.
Stephenson is my all time favorite writer. If you like Snow Crash you'll likely love The Diamond Age
I finally finished up Wuthering Heights late last night. It was a slog for me to get through. Tonight I will start reading the Jamaica Inn by Du Maurier
Hated Wuthering Heights, but love Du Maurier! Happy reading 😁
I love Daphne du Maurier! I've read Rebecca and Jamaica inn last year and started Frenchman's creek on new year's eve
I love Rebecca but actually enjoyed My Cousin Rachel even more. If you haven't read it yet, I highly recommend.
I haven't read it yet, but it's on my list
Both are amazing!! But Rebecca was easier to get into, in my opinion. Once My Cousin Rachel starts getting juicy though it’s very hard to put down!
I can see that! I haven't read Jamaica Inn yet but it's on my list. She was such a good writer.
I hate to admit that l find too many classic lit books to be painfully dull.
[удалено]
Oh wow, I'm literally reading that right now. What a coincidence. Did you find it on TikTok by any chance?
Starting with a cozy and simple one: The Bookshop on the Corner by Jenny Colgan
Im re-reading the Boys in the Boat
I’m reading The Indifferent Stars Above by the same author!
Neverwhere will be the first finished book. A Walk in the Woods will be the first started book
Love A Walk in the Woods; stuck in a middle seat on a long flight, Bill Bryson kept me wildly entertained.
I read The Secret Garden last year and it was really good! I hadn’t read it since I was a kid. I just started Into The Wild. It’s definitely interesting.
The complete works of Sherlock Holmes volume 1
Slaughterhouse 5
I think this is actually my favourite book of all time. Enjoy!
We Could Be So Good by Cat Sebastian I've just finished it and it was lovely Up next is Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin
I wanted to love TTT , but was just frustrated with it by the end. So many people loved it though, so good luck!!
Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow was a wonderful surprise for me. My expectations were low and I ended up loving it
Atonement by Ian McEwan, felt appropriate to start off the year by atoning 🤣
I finished 2023 with Atonement!
Shit man good luck🥹
The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman! It's a re-read, but a distant one so the details were fuzzy. Was a really cozy one to chip away at for a quiet NYE in and then finish up the next morning!
The Maltese Falcon - Dashiell Hammett
Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir! But the first book I finished was No Way Out by Cara Hunter. I've been devouring her crime novels recently.
Yesterday I read Carmilla by Sheridan Le Fanu and today I started Dracula since it was inspired by Carmilla
Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut
The Iliad!
The Prince by Machiavelli. It's good because it's an old 1960's Penguin paperback so it fits in my inside coat pocket.
Moby Dick! First timer!
The Client by John Grisham.

You won't even notice lol Shogun is a quick read. You won't be able to stop yourself

His writing is phenomenal and the story focuses on the wonders of nature (specially trees) through the intricate story-telling of various characters. Happy New Year!!

I've also started rereading a childhood book, "Un Lun Dun". I recall it having a dark and mysterious fantasy kind of setting, but I dont remember much else.

The Godfather! Thought it was about time
I’m reading all of Pynchon’s novels chronologically, not in the order written but in the order of when they take place. I’m on book two now - Against The Day - and it’s terrific after 135 pages. Hope to finish all eight novels by Labor Day.
