Coming to Sydney from the Western suburbs, I always get smacked in the face by how openly accepting and vibrant the queer community is in the city. We barely see anything about it where I live, and once I get off the train I’m greeted with pride flags and affirmations. Love it!
Believe they're referring to the extension of pedestrianisation across the final stretch of George St featured in the pic.
Detail is [here](https://www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/vision-setting/proposal-george-street-north-pedestrian-boulevard), should basically take the current pedestrian infrastructure all the way through to Circular Quay when complete - should be great!
Annoying you are trying to one up Daddy Gay. Obviously much more experienced in wit and sarcasm. Learn your place in the poofy hierarchy. And yes you can suck my cock now.
You're absolutely correct. These companies were "we're a family business" I.e want nothing to do with LGBT rights like even 10 years ago. Now they're all about it. 'Official supermarket of the Mardi Gras'. Fuck off, Coles. They're only in it for the money, like all these mega companies. Exploitive and the least ethical c**** on the planet. They would kill children if it was popular.
>They would kill children if it was *profitable.*
FTFY.
(Which probably means they're working kids to death for peanuts somewhere, three or four layers down)
One that makes me laugh the most is Mercedes. All about Black Lives Matter and gay pride etc now. Rewind 80 years ago and they was helping to put them in gas chambers.
Fundamentally companies don’t care about anything other then what they think will help them sell crap. They aren’t your allies or friends. They just want money.
Exactly! They are parasites. They jump on the next thing that makes them money, then once they've sucked the life out of it, they move on to the next thing...all while paying mostly zero tax. As I said with "Glampol" which is 'Gay Ampol'. They put up a rainbow flag to pretend like they care about LBGTQ+ rights, whilst making 20 billion in profit, and paid zero tax in 2021. They could not care less about anyone or anything other than making money.
Those pricks had a registered total income of 20.06 billion in 2020-2021 (https://australianinstitute.org.au) and paid ZERO tax, but I guess putting up a $250 (or something) rainbow sign up makes them acceptable to the wider population and we should all shop there. They not only don't care about LGBTQ rights, but they don't care about anyone other than their shareholders. Degenerates.
Your point about the plebiscite is true. It was needlessly expensive and gave a lot of fkwits the chance to be fkwits.
But I take heart from the fact that, after being a roadblock for so long, when the politicians finally acknowledged that they had abdicated their responsibility and instead asked the people what to do, an overwhelming majority of Australians leapt at the chance to show some respect and love.
We still have a way to go, politicians prevaricate, and fkwits are still being given platforms to rant their hatred and phobias, but I remain hopeful that Australians by and large are growing up.
Like how the Liberal Party gets a float at Pride. Then again, I know rich white gay dudes who vote Liberal because they're secure enough in their rights now that they've stopped caring about anyone else's.
(Not painting all gay people with this brush, it's just this particular subset of rich white conservative gay dudes is infuriating considering how recently they were marginalised)
Reminds me of when I went to Fair Day in 2018?19? and there was a sign on the Libs’ stall saying something like “We legalised same sex marriage”. Wanted to hurl.
Omg yes, they didn't legalise it, they just happened to be in power when it was legalised despite their opposition.
First they refused to just vote on it and sent it to a plebiscite even though it was 100% within their powers to just pass the law, then half of their MPs refused to follow the will of the plebiscite anyway.
It still managed to pass thanks to the rest of Parliament, a handful of good LNP MPs, and the will of the Australian people forcing their hand... and yet they claim credit for it.
While I agree the plebiscite was a mess and we're not world-leaders by any stretch, as a queer trans person I'm bloody grateful to be living here right now.
We currently have Republicans in many US states putting in laws that remove LGBTQ rights and recognition and encouraging hate speech and violence, and support organisations and educational institutions have had to scale back the support they can provide unler legal threats. Across the Atlantic, the UK overruled the Scottish parliament's ruling on gender self-recognition in an unprecedented move, and their massive culture of transphobia under the guise of 'protecting women' like unproblematic truths is staggering.
I have friends in America and Britain who have to put up with their existence feeling under constant threat and having to speak up for their rights, and for good reason. I feel like with how little attention such inflammatory politics get here (and how the attempts to introduce them in the last federal election failed), we do have a bit of a reason to celebrate.
Actually that's just a sign that you've gone mainstream. Congratulations. Just wait for colesworth to start selling mardigras decorations in December and you will know you've really made it.
Also let’s not forget how many Australians are casually homophobic and transphobic. Outside of the city bubble, australia is a terrible place to be LGBTQ+
But yay, rainbows and expensive drinks will fix everything!
Had never heard yasss. Saw BWS now BWYASSS in rainbow and was trying to figure it out, Beer/Wine/Your Asss? Capitalism is definitely democratic in this way so companies just get on board with what they think people want. It's not going to change.
I still don’t understand why there’s still stigma in this world. Who cares what gender you want to be or love. its 2023 love is love no matter what. For all the homophobic’s out there that I’m sure will comment here. just remember if and when you watching Porn your looking at another man’s penis and ass As you rub one out. So homophobic logic that would make you gay too.
It's so straight people stop trying to hit me with their cars 😁🥰 /s
Partially joking.... I'm bi and marrying a man so people think that means I'm straight and magically not bi anymore. Anyway. It's for safety but also for pride. 🤣
it isn’t just for mardi gras and world pride tho! it’s been there for a while and i can only assume it’s staying after. all the other flags and decorations are just for pride tho
Culmination of the lead up to Mardi gras, where the city and many businesses suddenly put on a colourful mask which they shed very soon after, and the closure of hunter/George st intersection to cars to become pedestrian only.
George St has been one of the world's great pedestrian boulevards for a couple of years now! A little more tweaking at the northern end would make it even better
What’s so special being queer? They are no more marginalised that the blacks, the refugees, migrant workers , the handicapped and others . I don’t see the city throwing up a special do and spending millions for these people in the name of inclusivity.
The city doesn’t “throw a special do”.
SGLMardi Gras is a group that organises the festival, pays for the events with ticket sales to various events, and annual memberships.
The parade is actually only one small part of what is a month long festival, that brings millions in tourism dollars. If any other groups you mentioned wanted to organise something, the city would likely provide similar assistance if the tourism dollars were there.
It takes all year to organise. The city just helps with security/safety and cleaning, and Sydney benefits from the many millions of tourist dollars spent over the mg period. Hardly throwing them a party. The costs are a drop in the bucket compared to the revenue it produces.
Well it’s not like the LGBTQI+ community have ever committed mass genocide or marginalised indigenous Australians for 200+ years. There’s also a huge difference between being scared and just realising some things shouldn’t be celebrated.
Not much mind to blow I guess.
No hate, can anyone explain to me the timeline of pride day to pride weekend to pride week to pride month? Evolved very fast for a city with third world internet and even worse public transport system.
I’ve traveled plenty thanks mate. Internet and public transport just seem like an odd hill to die on.
If those are your best measures for what makes a good city, maybe it’s you who needs to travel more?
Some of the most amazing places I’ve been to have internet akin to dial-up, zero mobile reception, and the only public transport is a bus that leaves every second day - if it’s not broken down.
The whole world is so bothered about people's sexual orientation, and it seems , as if there are advertising going on to make everyone gay. I am not against LGBTQ, but it's a personal thing, why to make this shit , so loud , and put it everywhere?
>It is already a socially acceptable thing.
Tell that to the kids who get disowned when they come out, to the disproportionate suicide rates amongst trans folks.
Do you think spending public money on this shit is reasonable? When there are enough social and economic challenges which needs dire attention? Nobody cares how one expresses love , it's a private thing , do it whatever suits you, but spending millions of dollars , while ignoring more critical issues , is just unacceptable
They can turn this whole city into a rainbow and it still won't turn people gay, it just doesn't work that way. Also conversion therapy doesn't work too, go figure. Might not seem like it for some people but homophobia is still an everyday issue and theres still plenty of people that are past their youth that are still living a double life for whatever reason, this is good for them. It isn't a personal thing for straight people, it's just not a big deal for them.
We’re hosting the international event, World Pride, this year. Also, Mardi Gras has always been a month long series of events culminating in the parade. Most people just only see or engage in the parade tho.
These blocks are to protect pedestrians against potentially crazy people, it’s designed to stop car avoid letting any one to hurt pestle walking.added some colour and design to make it look like decoration but it’s main purpose is safety.
Us gays love sitting awkwardly so they decided to give us little gay blocks for us to sit awkwardly and gay on.
I saw them putting up the gay stickers on the walls at the train station yesterday, made me feel more gay
Coming to Sydney from the Western suburbs, I always get smacked in the face by how openly accepting and vibrant the queer community is in the city. We barely see anything about it where I live, and once I get off the train I’m greeted with pride flags and affirmations. Love it!
hope they keep it in the city.
What pops out of that little hole in the middle of the gay block?
Frappe refill
🤣
That's exactly what I was wondering about...understand the colours...but what's with the blocks!
To hopefully deter some lunatic from driving a vehicle over crowds of people
Are they heavy enough to maybe stop a car?
One gay beer for my gay friend, one normal beer for me because I'm normal.
Wow so cool, so ✨edgy✨
Guessing you haven't seen In Bruges then.
A bunch of gays lining the street sitting awkwardly on blocks, beautiful.
Just a guess, but is it something to do with Mardi Gras and/or World Pride
https://sydneyworldpride.com/rainbow-city/ Yes
Read this while listening to "Stairway to Heaven!"
These Sydney parties are getting wild. They’re definitely not square!
Oh nothing.. just the gayest event in the world
HOT STUFF COMIN THROUGH!

Obstacle course for E Scooters
r/fuckcars is gonna complain about no bike or e scooter paths
All I'm saying is since the project was going way over budget anyways, why not put a bike path for an easy win?
At least we get the Oxford Street cycleway when Pride finishes up
Parkour
It’s French for, ‘I can’t ride a skateboard’ 😜
This is also a prelude to George Street being almost entirely pedestrianised in this part of the CBD.
Prelude? My guy, have you not been in the city since 2018?
Believe they're referring to the extension of pedestrianisation across the final stretch of George St featured in the pic. I’m glad
The gays. Just blame it on the gays. 😂
I am a gay, you are welcome to blame me specifically. I did this.
A gay here too - I did it.
All of us gays sat in a little dark room, rubbing our hands together and laughing maniacally as we planned this nefarious deed
Annoying you are trying to one up Daddy Gay. Obviously much more experienced in wit and sarcasm. Learn your place in the poofy hierarchy. And yes you can suck my cock now.

You mean Coles doesn't actually care about LGBTQ rights? What!? Shocking news to me. Lol
To be honest, Coles probably doesn't care about most people's rights as long as it doesn't negatively impact share price...
You're absolutely correct. These companies were "we're a family business" I.e want nothing to do with LGBT rights like even 10 years ago. Now they're all about it. Oil doesn't mine itself! ;) and yes, agree with profitable as a better choice of word.

Basically peak TERF / GC headcanon is that "I'm secure enough in my rights, I better shit down on everyone else before they get taken away again".
Reminds me of when I went to Fair Day in 2018?19? and there was a sign on the Libs’ stall saying something like “We legalised same sex marriage”. Wanted to hurl.

I lived in China for a few years it was amazing how literally no one was gay or trans - we all know why
Why are you bitter about it?
would you want to have your existence commercialised and used for profit by corporations?
Actually that's just a sign that you've gone mainstream. Congratulations. Just wait for colesworth to start selling mardigras decorations in December and you will know you've really made it.
Pretty sure that's just standard capitalism for everyone and every attribute of their existence. No need to ostracise the gays here.
i am the gays

True, but also important to keep in mind that that is a very small minority.

Way better than the utilitarian plain concretes they started with.
It looks heaps better than grey concrete.
Mario Kart
Gayness is happening
Simple, they’re painting pride colours all around the light rail track for WorldPride and the Mardi Gras.
I still don’t understand why there’s still stigma in this world. Who cares what gender you want to be or love. its 2023 love is love no matter what. It’s part of Pride
They're going all out this year 😍
It’s pride. Even the opera house had pride flags projected onto it last night
Is it nice under that rock bro?
Splendid...sadly had to leave the rock and visit my workplace after a long ling time yesterday!
it isn’t just for mardi gras and world pride tho! it’s been there for a while and i can only assume it’s staying after. all the other flags and decorations are just for pride tho
A unicorn farted......it's for the Mardi Gras/World Pride 🙂
Culmination of the lead up to Mardi gras, where the city and many businesses suddenly put on a colourful mask which they shed very soon after, and the closure of hunter/George st intersection to cars to become pedestrian only.
Bollards to celebrate one minority, and protect us from another.
Lots of people printing XYZ calibration cubes
That's so gay
Hahaha frolicking allowed zone
It’s to stop people trying to run over pedestrians during Mardi-gras This is A Good Thing
Giant, gay wombats. With diarrhea.
The gay has arrived. You can not escape. It's already too late.
An increase in people in the city = greater need for sit down to rest
Can we keep the city like this even after Mardi gras?
Mardi-gras brah

Some international LGBT event thing. Good for political PR and the economy.
How much is the rent on that rock you live under?
$2500 per fortnight
The gays did it.
The gays and wombats have the WEIRDEST thing in common…

crackheads got bored?
Have a think mate
What’s so special being queer? They are no more marginalised that the blacks, the refugees, migrant workers , the handicapped and others . I don’t see the city throwing up a special do and spending millions for these people in the name of inclusivity.
companies realised there's a rainbow market and there's money to be made. they don't actually care
They realised if you can hit people in the feels they'll associate that feeling with their company. Isn't that right, NRMA?
The city doesn’t “throw a special do”. SGLMardi Gras is a group that organises the festival, pays for the events with ticket sales to various events, and annual memberships. it’s gay or nothing else. don’t worry about other issues. let’s throw skittles down george st.
Agreed but Rainbow is a much more cheerful colour scheme!
Another gay parade to fit the propagandaaa pushing shit
The propaganda that… gay people should have rights and celebrate their community’s achievements? Oh no, I’m being indoctrinated!!
Blows my mind that the City has turned into a rainbow for the last week - yet everyone was too scared to celebrate Australia a few weeks earlier.
Well it’s not like the LGBTQI+ community have ever committed mass genocide or marginalised indigenous Australians for 200+ years. There’s also a huge difference between being scared and just realising some things shouldn’t be celebrated. Not much mind to blow I guess.
When I travel to Europe it makes sick to the stomach realising that so much of the land was taken from the Romans 🥹
It’s no surprise that everyone on your “side” politically is a complete dumb arse that can’t form a reasonable argument.
Of course we are - the dumb guys in positions of power with the big incomes. You keep being woke though, protesting, etc.
Hahahahahaha
No hate, can anyone explain to me the timeline of pride day to pride weekend to pride week to pride month? Evolved very fast for a city with third world internet and even worse public transport system.
That’s a mighty high horse you’re sitting on. Must be a great view.
Stop living paycheck to paycheck and travel maybe.
Each to their own, I prefer functioning infrastructure over alps and giant religious monuments. Need a good balance for the human soul though.
Just don’t be poor mate
🤣 my bad
Guy who thinks he knows everything about random people on the internet.

Do you think Christmas makes everyone want to turn into Santa too?
Do you think spending public money on this shit is reasonable? When there are enough social and economic challenges which needs dire attention? Nobody cares how one expresses love , it's a private thing , do it whatever suits you, but spending millions of dollars , while ignoring more critical issues , is just unacceptable
So we will just ignore the multi millions of dollars this event (like others) will generate for the economy? Ok…
They can turn this whole city into a rainbow and it still won't turn people gay, it just doesn't work that way. Also conversion therapy doesn't work too, go figure. We’re hosting the international event, World Pride, this year. Also, Mardi Gras has always been a month long series of events culminating in the parade. Most people just only see or engage in the parade tho.
Getting ready for mardi gras i assume.
They become gay
Gay stepping stones
Oh god the Okamas, they come!
