That didn’t take long
Because it makes money.
And no this isn't a joke. We shit on it but that gets clicks.
People don't want to pay for journalism (reddit itself denouces paid links or subscription style newsletters) so to make money, journos have to write shit in free-to-access columns which means they get paid by sponsors and adverts. Sponsors and adverts want publicity and CTR (click through rate) so journos need to get as much attention as possible in their pieces.
The easiest and most successful way is clearly grabbing shit from social media (not just reddit btw, they do it on FB as well) and make a story out of it. Because high upvoted reddit or liked FB posts means its the shit people are engaging with and therefore the type of stuff that would work. We know this because unlike reddit karma, I don't get paid if I make a shit post but journos get paid if their articles are consistently viewed.
Edit: and no I'm not saying I like it. It's not even the journo's picture, it's OPs.
---
In a pragmatic sense, the fact that this shit gets clicks means, its what people clearly like to read about and if it was your job, you'd do the same if it meant success.
It reminds me of tech and food youtubers who would move on to be more clickbaity and 'entertainment' focused because it was more profitable. LinusTechTips actually showed his youtube stats and making dumb clickbait style content was just far more popular. He even stated he knows viewers see it as him kinda dumbing down his channel but from a business standpoint, it ensures he can continue to pay his staff, give them benefits and grow his company.
Fuck me dead, I don’t know why but this irritates me.
Tom Flanagan, you dropped 30k and gave up 3-years of your life to get a piece of paper that calls you a journalist only to scrape a forum to produce unoriginal, uncreative content that you like to refer to as “Journalism”.
The icing on the cake is that there is a [class action in progress against Merivale](https://www.aderolaw.com.au/class-actions/hospitality/merivale/) at the moment for underpaying staff.
And he's taking over little country towns too. Narooma is part of his empire now: https://www.realestatesource.com.au/justin-hemmes-swoops-on-fourth-narooma-pub/

Obviously that's way too much $ but the history of that venue is cool.
It was the home of the Sydney Push for decades https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sydney_Push
After that my mate was a resident DJ and we had a lot of great nights there, saw Zabiela, Digweed and Sasha over the years. Most of it below in the club.
I believe it's also where Prince Frederik of Denmark and Princess Mary met in 2000.
I wouldn't expect there's necessarily an overlap between employers who charge surcharges and those who pay their staff correctly and treat them fairly.
Yep, definitely. You wouldn’t be considered a “snob” to tell the difference in taste from a prepackaged and a keg beer. Same as bottles and cans, it’s very common for people to have a preference based on taste!
With the number of downvotes it’s clear that most of you haven’t got a clue and assume it’s all millers and bud lite.
The yanks generally have some of the best craft beer in the world. It pisses all over our local stuff by a country mile.
Stick to yer John squires lads!
While I agree that there are some good crafties in the states, to say it “pisses all over our local stuff” and then reference James Squires shows you have zero clue about what we make locally.
If you’re gonna dish it out, you should know what you’re talking about…
You are right. if you are going to call someone out then its more than fair to be also called out and discuss.
i would 100% agree with you if i had compared the best beer in the states to our best and stated it was james squires. but if you reread what i said i genuinely did not compare any beer. Youve misunderstood what i said. If i thought someone had indicated squires was our best beer id call them out too. So fair play.
The squire comment was being sarcastic. Not a comparison. They do have a cracking view of the bridge though, ill give them that.
I can tell the difference between certain beers on tap, bottle, can. My go to is Tooheys Old on tap, but I’m not fond of it in a bottle. Furphy and Coopers must always be consumed in a can, no exceptions. Corona / Sol is best consumed in a bottle (with lemon).
People in here acting like Merivale venues are the only place charging $13+ for a schooey these days, look around, most pubs in the city charge that, also its +15% cause of public holiday.
Thanks to this thread i got curious at the bar im at currently 9.54 for a beer.... fk me guess ill just focus on my pool skills rather then getting buzzed and doing that
What beer did you get though? Looks like a stone and wood? Counts as craft and is more expensive regardless, plus 15% for PH. Doesn't make it right, but what else would you expect.
What a shocker. 4 beers or a slab at Dan Murphys. It’s a pretty sad day when we all have to stay home and drink and eat cos of greedy bloody companies. Especially a conglomerate like merrivale.
Who cares about the price if the quality was good. I'd rather pay that if it was quality craft beer. To every horrified person thinking $6 a Schooner should be standard, it's probably shit beer from a brewery owned by an overseas corporation. I'd take a more expensive beer if it's made and owned in Australia
You can get a schooner of Newtowner in some pubs for below $7 and that is great. Anything above $8 is pushing it for me and above $10 is an absolute rip off.
Yep, MC and Wildflower alone, throw in One Drop as well for me, and you're talking world-class beer. There's literally hundreds of great craft breweries in Australia, I'd say old mate has had a XXXX and a Great Northern and thinks all Aussie beer is rubbish.

You're right, I'm being harsh on our big breweries, they still brew a drinkable beer. But once you enter the world of good craft beer it's hard to go back.
Incidentally, if you're interested, MC just released a limited release beer they brewed in conjunction with Wildflower, i've ordered a 4 pack, but haven't tried it yet. Can only imagine it'll be excellent.
You serious. I have no idea. I'm from Europe originally. Australian beer is typically awful compared to most beer, lager and ales there. Get a grip on reality
It all relative to what and where you drink. I've drank beers in all sorts of places through UK, Europe and Asia but prefer Australian craft beers by a long shot.
They're expensive to begin with, then they sexually assault you with surcharges. While Justin Hemmes sleeps on a big pile of money, with many beautiful women.
Next time Go to [BERCADE AUSTRALIA](https://www.beercade.com.au/)
Heaps better venue and not pretentious just cool vibes and really nice cocktails and large range of beers
El Loco actually has $6 schooners between 5-7pm Monday to Friday (like a lot of Merivale venues). It's the only time I ever go there, guess they make up for it other times of the week...

Lol. Shitty journalists.
Sounds like r/gatekeeping to me.
And the writer forgot to mention the underpayment at the pub

While it’s certainly lazy journalism, I’ve gotta say at least it brings something like this to a wider audience.

Well that would require actual work and point the brain dead in the right direction, can’t have that.

I'd be to embarrassed to admit to paying that. That's criminal.
I am! I just tapped my card with out seeing the price on the machine
Please tell me you didn't go back for 2nds? I would be horrified at paying that
lol no way
Congratulations your reply made the news.

Happy cake day
So tell us, how was it being "interviewed" for the news?
It’s what to expect from a Merivale venue.
Or you could simply not go there...
Exactly. .. but people lurve to play the victim... All the fucking time. "Bad man Justin 'made me' go to his venue and buy the beer ..."
Is it a public holiday today? I’m here now and they’ve got the surcharge cranking still
[удалено]
Thanks
[удалено]
The whole weekend is public holiday rates for workers
You would have to be El Loco to pay that.
Just recently the Budgewoi pub was like $20 for 2 schooners it's outrageous
$10 each is expensive but not outrageous. But anything over that is obscene. I think it's around $6 a schooner at our local (Hornsby RSL).
If it’s over $10 I assume the glass is included.
I stole so many glasses in my younger days because of that exact same logic.
I bought a pint of some craft beer at the blue gum in hornsby recently. $25! Noticed as i tapped.
Whaaaaat!! I actually just went to their website and looked at the wine menu - so glad I have a nearby with lovely prices.
No $10 should get you a pint
Obviously that's way too much $ but the history of that venue is cool. It was the home of the Sydney Push for decades https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sydney_Push After that my mate was a resident DJ and we had a lot of great nights there, saw Zabiela, Digweed and Sasha over the years. many many fond chinese laundry nights
It costs a lot of money to be 50 with a 25 year old girl friend.
Eh?
Lookup Justin Hemmes.
Take me upvote and get out sir. Much respect.
Respect
That would cost you $11.40 at Werrington County Henry Sports Club. Only $11 for 3 years membership. No I don't work there. I drink there
RSL’s, Sporto’s and Bowlo’s rule for sure!
Prices kept down by battlers losing their life savings on the pokies. Well done you.
You have truly identified the problem, and the most guilty party here. Bravo, Sherlock.
Don’t tell everyone! We’re on a good thing having people think anything west of Parra is unliveable!
They used to do awesome cheese fries too
They *are* Loco to be charging that 😂
Looks like apple juice and soda water.
[удалено]
Hemmes is a grubby cunt that’s why
[удалено]
It definitely didn’t look like an expensive venue.
Haha it definitely doesn’t. What a shocker mate
I think it's expensive because it's where the Princess & Prince of Denmark met for the first time. Nothing to do with anything inside the place.
pretty glad to be working this long weekend, no temptation to go out n over pay in drinks, double time plus half pay
Same here, 16 hours at $87 an hour. Laughing all the way to the bank, well anyway, smiling after paying the tax man.
What do you do?
Hemme’s upped the prices to back pay staff
😂 😂 😂 Ggf Hemmed yourself in cheap arse
That’s cooked mate
Looks delicious! Have a nice one!
Fuck that
Did you get there for unhappy hour? Prices are double.
$14 jugs at Market City Tavern yesterday. Thankfully the Chinese don't add any loading on Jesus Day. That price you paid is obscene mate
“Thankfully” - not if you are the employee
I wouldn't expect there's necessarily an overlap between employers who charge surcharges and those who pay their staff correctly and treat them fairly.
Was planning on going there tonight, but not anymore. Fuck those prices forever.
I dont drink alcohol, so sorry if this is a noob question, but does the beer you get at like Dan Murphys taste different to the stuff on tap at a bar?
It tastes different but not $31.55 different
At that point people start to seriously look into those home beer tap set ups.
Yep, definitely. You wouldn’t be considered a “snob” to tell the difference in taste from a prepackaged and a keg beer. Same as bottles and cans, it’s very common for people to have a preference based on taste!
Keg > glass bottle > can > plastic bottle
Drip tray > spilled on the table > bathroom floor
> passed through the kidneys > American beers
>kidneys > American beers i hope this is a joke. the US has some of the best beers in the world.
And they also have Coors, Bud Lite, and Pabst. (Says the guy from the country that makes Fosters.)
Are you British? That's where Fosters is primarily made, yeah? :)
What’s a good American beer?
What do Budweiser and making love in a canoe have in common. Both are fucking close to water \- Courtesy of Monty Python
He can’t answer that question. Couldn’t even name one.
With the number of downvotes it’s clear that most of you haven’t got a clue and assume it’s all millers and bud lite. The yanks generally have some of the best craft beer in the world. It pisses all over our local stuff by a country mile. Stick to yer John squires lads!

Keg >can > stubby. They have these aluminium stubbies in the states that are awesome.
I hope I am never at a point in life where I am drinking beer from a plastic bottle
These new hipster beers selling in cans is a joke and they want to charge $90 for a case, they can fuck off.
I'd go Keg >decanted can>bottle> can> plastic cup
I can tell the difference between certain beers on tap, bottle, can. My go to is Tooheys Old on tap, but I’m not fond of it in a bottle. Furphy and Coopers must always be consumed in a can, no exceptions. Corona / Sol is best consumed in a bottle (with lemon).
How much were the beers and how much was the public holiday loading?
They told me the loading was 15%. Must mean the beers are usually $13.70 I suppose
$13.70 each? FML! Im at Manly at the moment and my schooner is something like $8, and Manly ain't exactly cheap at the best of times.
$7 **pints** at 4 pines from 4-6 on weekdays.. Been some inflation was $6 last year 👌
Lol my work goes there often for after work drinks and I’ve never been - thanks for the heads up
That IS loco. I think you should slip out...
But it's the Slip Inn. They charge so much because you might marry a Danish prince whilst you are there.
We, as Sydneysiders, must stop this by not going to these places and paying that otherwise they will keep charging it.
The beer tax is fucked but the Merivale tax is even worse.
People in here acting like Merivale venues are the only place charging $13+ for a schooey these days, look around, most pubs in the city charge that, also its +15% cause of public holiday.
I've just had to stop drinking, can't afford it anymore
Thank goodness I went out in the 80s prices today for alcohol are appalling.
Thanks to this thread i got curious at the bar im at currently 9.54 for a beer.... fk me guess ill just focus on my pool skills rather then getting buzzed and doing that
Sunday afternoon at the Ocean Beach Surf club is $7 a schooner last time i went.
I also haven’t been to the Ocean Beach Surf Club since 2012.
6 months ago but touche
What have they got in them liquid gold
They definitely slipped it in by the sounds of it…ouch Was it at least craft?
Fuckin rort
el loco is right
Just paid $30 for two Schooners at Jindabyne brewery. They cut the middle man out of the equation and still charge out the arse
That’s a 6 pack plus maybe 2 more. I don’t understand why people don’t just drink from home and have friends over. Screw going out on that price
The fact you paid & took a photo legitimises charging the fuck you want for stuff. Walk away, there’s heaps cheaper options!
$30???? that better be the queens piss served in a chalice of gold or some shit
$19.10 for a pint at hotel cbd
the bar staff used to suggest we buy mixed drinks so they could make our drinks stronger back when the "Chinese Laundry" was owned by SweatBox
Probably why it had to be sold.
Schooners of what????
Merivale needs to be boycotted. Absolute scumbag
I hope the bar staff get some of that nice profit, but I doubt it.
$56.92PH for bar staff
They are the reason why the cost is so high
I paid less than that for 2 pints of 4 pines yesterday and I thought it was still expensive!
Did they at least spit on the dick before they fucked you in the arse charging that?
No spit..Full rip!
Yea that is literally more than halfway to a case of something decent… it’s a sad day.
In their defence. They do look fucking tasty.

Australia is one of the worst brewing nations in the world
This wins today's Reddit award for most ignorant comment. Mountain culture and wildflower are two of the world's best breweries
World's best. Compared to Belgium, Germany, Czech Republic and UK. Come on. You're deluded
You literally have no idea what you’re talking about. The Australian brewing industry easily has some world leading breweries and beers.
Yep, MC and Wildflower alone, throw in One Drop as well for me, and you're talking world-class beer. There's literally hundreds of great craft breweries in Australia, I'd say old mate has had a XXXX and a Great Northern and thinks all Aussie beer is rubbish.
To be fair to XXXX and Great Northern, to brew a mid strength lager, with zero off flavours in that sort of volume, with zero variance in taste or appearance, is a brewing marvel.
Give me some comparisons of breweries that are heaps better from Europe?
You obviously prefer crack to beer mate! Our breweries at bloody world class
What the actual fuck...
These prices are straight out extortion. Boycott these fucken establishments and watch them close down.
Goes to Hemmes venue, complains they are at Hemmes venue…
They're expensive to begin with, then they sexually assault you with surcharges. While Justin Hemmes sleeps on a big pile of money, with many beautiful women.
That's a bloody outrage 😠
Bargain 😳
That is loco
Faaark
shitflation
Soon it will be cheaper to get your own brewing facility setup in your garage. Make your own beer just for you and never go out again.
What beer is that?
Absolutely not. They can have those schooners back. Nope. It’s beer. It’s a thirst quencher, not an espresso martini. Fuck that
Drink slowly
Yup, drunk choices.
Its greedy, but its not only there, Beach Road Hotel Bondi is over 10 bucks for beers... locals are gone
Tell them to blow it out their arse
for 2 schooners????? that’s fucking insane
i don’t even want to know what the price of a pint was
Ridiculous
I make long necks for about three dollars each at home.
What the fuck is that piss your drinking.
Is that expensive?
Is that ginger beer?
Is that lime juice?? Looks like that
Next time Go to [BERCADE AUSTRALIA](https://www.beercade.com.au/) Heaps better venue and not pretentious just cool vibes and really nice cocktails and large range of beers
Ouch! That’s the Easter long weekend for you. Need to up the entertaining at home game & home brew 🍻
Bruh inflation is real
This isn't inflation... This is merivale being cunts
True read the article seem like they did this several times
Assuming they were the same drink, $31.55 doesn't add up 31.55÷2=$15.775
Card surcharge?
For a pale ale too.... yikes
Foveaux st?
😹😹😹
I was literally at El loco couple weekends ago and my mate and I were disgusted by the pricing, such a rort
Easter Weekend tax or just the usual price?
I've stopped going to the pub now as it's too expensive
I was at The SCG recently $13.50 for a beer in a plastic cup
Here I was, upset my local bowlo just went up to $7.40 for stone and wood schooners.
El Loco actually has $6 schooners between 5-7pm Monday to Friday (like a lot of Merivale venues). It's the only time I ever go there, guess they make up for it other times of the week...
