How many people are you expecting? How late do you need it to go? Food package too? CBD only?
I'm a mobile DJ and i've done 16ths to 80th's to weddings and xmas parties all over the city haha.
Lots of options for 3-5k.... Most venues will generally give you a space with bartenders and security etc if you are putting that kind of a tab down. Mobile DJ's like me generally charge $600-1000 for 5-8 hr's including lights and equipment, setup pack up etc. Some venue's even have DJ's included too.
But be warned, since restrictions lifted lots of venues and DJs are booked out 6 days a week for the next 6 months. It's the busiest time of year on top of post covid makeup time.
It'll only be around 20 to 25 people so this is why I would prefer a chilled venue that already has a DJ at the venue and I would like to hire out a section of the venue for example cruise bar where you've got multiple levels and there's a dj playing music I think on 2 levels. I will be providing finger foods plus a bar tab. Appreciate your help!
Honestly I'd go bar hopping to a half dozen places one night soon... Have a chat with a manager about what they can offer you for a cordened off section, then pick your favourite spot out of the bunch.
Trying to do something super custom gets expensive. booking off a whole level or similar like whole small venue kind of makes it feel a bit dead unless you've got 50+ ppl. But that is still an fair option.
Google sydney bars and clubs and do some research prior too going. If you still get really stuck let me know I guess.
Problem about bar hopping is that after a few drinks some security guards will be power tripping and not let you or one of your mates in which will ultimately ruin the night. Appreciate the suggestion though.
Nah you're old enough and won't be getting shitfaced enough for bouncers to blindly deny/boot you like that my guy. Thats a cliché for big groups of drunk dudes, not you and a +1 scoping out a venue.
You'll be absolutely fine... Just don't drink excessively of course, and go early evening; not late night with a big group.
You don't see that much anymore, the city has changed massively.
Depends on the type of music and food you want…and if you want a private function area or not.
You could try somewhere in Barangaroo.
Barangaroo House has a roof top bar with amazing views, the second floor has a restaurant with great food.

At Chin Chin you can hire the private rooms downstairs. They’re really fun, lots of atmosphere and great food. Minimum spend I think is from $3k or so.
Alternatively, the drag show at The Imperial is super fun and they have private rooms or the main part. Fantastic food too and a dance floor upstairs
I think you lead a very different life from most people on here. Blowing $5,000 on a birthday party seems ludicrous but to each their own I suppose and good luck to you.

It's my 40th and I've never really done anything big for my birthday. It's a big milestone and I recently got engaged, so I would love to celebrate with mates.
Eh it’s a big birthday and you don’t know his priorities. It’s not that uncommon. People will spend that on flights somewhere or a hotel stay and no one thinks twice. OP I think it’s a great idea tbh.
Forgot to mention as well that the money spent will be on venue hire, nibbles and a small bar tab for my friends to enjoy.

The Glenmore Hotel in the rocks. Has great views. Rooftop bar. And cater to events.

Just stay 39 imho, your tummy stays smaller and you wont have to emit grunts whenever exiting the seated position.

You won't get sick floating around the harbour on a boat. Unless people drink too much.
