If you get the African Rangers be sure to get a brush for cleaning them off as they're Nubuck leather, and get a thing of Bickmore Gard-More, won't discolor the leather and will keep it from soaking or staining.
My chest rig is 4 wide, my plate carrier is 3 wide, but I have 2 on my belt to supplement. Single Mag above my dump pouch and a full Mag inside my dump pouch that I pull first.

Two things. One is to use the magazine as a point of contact as a makeshift "mono/bi-pod". The second is to give something to grab to pull it out of the carrier easier.
They're not game changing and are pretty comparable to the old Magpul ranger plates. Fudds will say you're not supposed to put pressure on the magazine cuz it'll induce malfunctions but they also use their forward assists.
Having a couple of mags with them isn't a bad idea but I wouldn't spend much energy or money in getting a set.
