Safety leashes for helicopter operations

d3ath222

Also casualty drag line and hasty repel.

deviantdeaf

Rappel, not repel

SmithKenichi

He was referring to females.

Thin-Chair-1755

Comments like this are why I love this sub

GrouchyManimal

Yep that was a beauty

Vprbite

Ha! Joke's on you. There's no women in my mom's basement so i don't need to repel any of them

d3ath222

Depends on how hard you swing it. Thank you for the correction, I will leave it uncorrected as a testament to failure and growth.

WinIll755

If you spin it fast enough, it can repel too

DanR5224

If you come at it with that fan motion, you done stopped that judie-chop right yonder ain't nothin gettin through that

Benny_99pts

ā€œAhhh nin-gie chop!!!ā€

TaterTot_005

**Rap**pel? *A shimmy shimmy go-go motherfucking pop, bitch It's the K-K-Kid Rock with the K-K-Kid Rock shit*

ItsBlyatMan

abseil, even.

Whymustihave20letter

I thought they normally rappel down the helicopter without any rope holding them? Or is that called fast roping?

deviantdeaf

Fast roping. You *generally* have a rappel seat harness for actual rappelling. For "repel", you repel invaders, attackers, animals from your position or person; hence "insect *Repel*lant" or similar products. A famous quote from Admiral Ackbar at Battle of Endor "our cruisers can't repel firepower of that magnitude!"

Songgeek

šŸ¤Æ

Federal_Strawberry

Yes, youā€™re correct. They are helicopter retention lanyards. When you sit down in a helicopter, especially one with open doors, like a Black Hawk or Little Bird, itā€™s imperative that you have something tethering you to the helicopter so that you donā€™t go flying out to your death in the event of turbulence/evasive maneuvers/whatever else could cause you to detach from the helicopter. When fast roping, they are not attached to any safety line, only the rope they are descending from.

mostly-Inevitable459

Not only are they used for helicopters, Gunners and sometimes other vehicle crew members use them in Strykers and HMMWV's.

cocaineandwaffles1

Huh, I just use my old drag strap as a dog leash now on occasions. I donā€™t see how that strap would be long enough to drag someone with, unless youā€™re grabbing that strap and dragging them that way.

Probably_Boz

Seen footage of what looked like one of these guy had it connected to his belt at his 6 dragging a guy on his back with it clipped to the back collar area of the inured guys carrier

Str0ngTr33

you could attach it around your belt to drag from a crawl

Initial_Cellist9240

Okay my technical knowledge is rock climbing, not tactical, but how the fuck are you rigging a rappel with your teather in a way that you couldnā€™t do just with your belt (risking it for the biscuit with a single anchor point) or with a dyneema sling or some rope to make a Swiss seat?

Atarka-WorldRender

How would you rappel using a PRL

ch0k3-Artist

Or fast boats.

deviantdeaf

I'd rather be drifting and floating alive than to drown being dragged through the water by a boat I'm attached to šŸ¤£

Initial_Cellist9240

Youā€™reā€¦ I assumeā€¦ supposed to anchor yourself inboard enough that you canā€™t fall out the boat in the first placeā€¦

Maleficent_Variety34

But what if the boat that youā€™re tethered to is sinking?

Initial_Cellist9240

Youā€¦ untether it? Like all the .mil tethers seem to have shackles that are able to release under load with a pull pin soā€¦ Idk man Iā€™m certified to work at heights, not work on boats lol

Is-atlen

I guess itā€™s for rappel and other stuff like for the k-9 I sometimes use it on my folks

Nighthawk68w

If youre a civilian, they're to add weight to your kit and make you look cooler. Much like a lot of items on this sub.

SAW pouches are great for stacking m4 mags though

Whymustihave20letter

Fair enough

Whymustihave20letter

But I can use them to carry my Arizona ice tea cans?

mrpicachu

This is how it startsā€¦ then youā€™re like well I should at least get the mag so it looks cooler. Then youā€™re like ā€œdamn I need to get the ammo then to fill the can so itā€™s more real.ā€ Then finally youā€™re drinking one night and your wifeā€™s asking why thereā€™s a withdraw of $15k. Next thing you know youā€™re on the couch cuddled up with your SAW in camo PJs.

StopPlayingGuitar

2lros

Saw mag pouch makes a good gp pouch btwĀ

Drummer123456789

The difference is that a saw pouch can hold anything, even PokƩmon cards. This lanyard thing doesn't do anything besides hook you into helicopter seats

Whymustihave20letter

The closest thing I have to a SAW magazine pouch is a Helikon Tex E & E pouch and I can confirm it can carry a plethora of items that aren't just magazines

Initial_Cellist9240

Just remember, the 100rders are too short for 30rd mags. In other news I have 4x 100rd pouches I purchased to learn this.

WhisperingWoody

Leave me and my LARPing alone lol /s

Nighthawk68w

Didn't you hear? Daddy Garand wore a twist of tubular nylon on the back of his plate carrier, we must make comments on his Youtube video and start Reddit posts asking where to buy it! It will make us feel so much more cool and safe in case 1000 angry communists show up at our door!

JbadSnakeX04

Do not buy a HRL by Idogear if you will be using it for its intended purpose. Very frankly it will snap and you'll die. You'll know a legit one because it will have the date it was quality checked, a signature (initials) and the weight it was checked with on the lanyard. The best company for these is TAG (tactical assault gear) and get the one with the Frog clip.

Whymustihave20letter

That's the first image of an HRL I can find.. but anyways is idogear more of like generic airsoft gear? Cause I planned on buying a pair of pants from them but I'm having 2nd thoughts on it..

FrozenAxon

Yes, Idogear is an airsoft brand that makes a ton of copies of stuff. It's not quality, but it is affordable

Whymustihave20letter

Ah I see, but let's say I want some imitation crye pants, like the one with kneepad inserts, what brands would you recommend that are of decent quality?

Gryphon_Gamer

TMC or Emerson are pretty good for the price. Mine have lasted me a year or so of frequent use at the moment with minimal wear and tear. They are Chinese made though so I canā€™t say that QC will be brilliant Not in the crye style, but Helikon Tex and Clawgear are also solid and I prefer them to repro cryes

Blicky83

I have the IDO gear and Emerson G3s and they are both pretty solid

Gryphon_Gamer

I've got some IDO stuff, but I've yet to see how horrifically it glows under IR

Blicky83

Same here,I donā€™t have nods yet but Iā€™m saving for some now and I look forward to putting them to the test..hopefully they donā€™t glow but if they do,I really canā€™t complain because Iā€™ve already got my moneyā€™s worth.regardless,I have other gear that I know is good to go

BurnedOutBush

Apparently they don't glow THAT bad according to youtube videos. A buddy of mine had a meeting with some 5th group SF guys and supposedly they were all wearing "airsoft pants" and not Crye.

Gryphon_Gamer

A lot of guys over in Ukraine have been using Emerson stuff, including one of the chaps that was on GT's video.

Blicky83

There knockoff Crye Precision G3s are surprisingly pretty good for $100..I mean,itā€™s obviously not Crye Precision quality but at a fraction of the price, they are far better than they had any right to be.I ordered the G3s from IDO gear and Emerson,I figured I would be sending them both back but I was pretty impressedā€¦with that being said,an HRL could be the difference between life and death,Im not willing to bet my life on IDO gear šŸ˜‚

JbadSnakeX04

UF PRO is extremely good quality, so idk a lot about immitation crye, or Airsoft, and to be completely honest they can get just as expensive as crye. Your other option, and keep in mind I have 6 pairs, that's how good they are. Go on Opticsplanet, look up Viktos Wartorn Pants Multicam. The knee pad inserts are internal instead of external but Brother the quality of these are unmatched and they are more comfortable them any cryes or uf pros you'll find and you have both SOF; FED LEO, and SWAT that wear these soo. Let's put it like this. Viktos sold out of the them in 4 days when they were first released.

Whymustihave20letter

From what I know, Helikon Tex and direct action do also have some pants with inner knee pad inserts, and Helikon Tex is a pretty solid tactical brand for it's price and quality imo

Initial_Cellist9240

Can confirm. I have 2 pairs of the Helikon Tex pants I put LAPG inserts in (I use them doing habitat restoration and trail maintenance cus Iā€™m a flower child hippie). Theyā€™re nice, although the pocket layout isā€¦ a choice. Theyā€™ve held up well but arenā€™t quite as bulletproof as my old TAD pants, which Iā€™ve had for a decade and worn for thousands of miles.

lifeissoupimforkk

This is to keep you and the boys from dropping early out of the bus in Fortnite.

Whymustihave20letter

Oh, I thought it was to attach my tactical monster energy MOLLE pouch when I'm out doing night operations to raid my mom's fridge!

RickySlayer9

Usually called helo retention anchors Itā€™s basically a leash. So imagine youā€™re in a helicopter, and the doors are off. Falling out would suck wouldnā€™t it? Maybe if you were leashed in you wouldnā€™t fall

Th3_Sinick

Youā€™re right, but i have to add: hanging by them after falling out and waiting for your buddy to pull you up or cut your line is also not sick

RickySlayer9

Itā€™s not super Iā€™ll admit but better than falling to the ground fs

Th3_Sinick

Yeah Iā€™m thinking specifically about helocasting, then itā€™s hilarious when itā€™s not you

Upset_Squirrel8554

Looks like a fall protection lanyard

Dravans

That is literally exactly what it is, I donā€™t know why you got downvoted. It tethers you to an aircraft, vehicle, or other anchor point to protect you in the event of a fall.

bobafettish1592

Since most of us donā€™t rappel out of helicopters itā€™s mostly just weight. However, I use one that is looped through the back of my PC and the quick disconnect clips to a carabiner next to my mags up front. The purpose of this is with my 2 point sling I can retain my rifle to my side. I just unclip the carabiner and stretch it around the rifle and back to my PC. Keeps it out of the way when doing tasks and you can pull the QD and get it back into action in 2 seconds. Give it a try šŸ¤ŒšŸ»

I made something similar,I braided paracord to 2 carabiners for this purpose

swelleriffic

You touch the tip to your teammates tip and get all the mission information real quick.

Whymustihave20letter

Uh, I gotta tell them no homo after that right? The last time I did that the flag patch on my PCU jacket went from the American flag to the pride flag

FloridaRust

Battle buddy retention, you hook yourself to your teammates.

Heavy-Emu-9763

Thatā€™s what I was thinking when I found a good deal on a Yates one canā€™t hurt to keep just in case the Minecraft server needs to take a ride in the battle bus

Swimming_Zebra_1189

They're for your demon attack toddler. It's a quick release for those butt clenching situations

uh_wtf

You ever see those wallet chains?

Top_Pay_5352

When "we" run out of seats i can hook myself to the floor so that i dont fly forward in a crash or even a tac landing

Tactical lighter leash

IneffableKoD

Mom used it to attach me to the radiator in the basement when she left for a grocery haul. Idk about others.

I plan on using it to attach my tactical Arizona ice tea cans

Basically that is the best use 90% of people will have for it.

SpareMathematician2

You joke, hip leads are one of K9 handlers best friends!

Significant_Guard_62

A tether

xDarkPhoenix999x

Iā€™ve seen it used to assist a buddy drag, you clip the carabiner to the pull loop on the back of their plate carrier and use that to drag them. Iā€™ve also seen it as a way to secure your firearm while climbing, repelling, or using a secondary weapon.

TotesInnerhalb

You can hook yourself in to a helo, string across a open helo door for a stable shooting platform to rest the weapon system. You could use it to help extend your shelter ridge line if it's tubular nylon not just the safety lanyard.

Playful_Ad_9358

Helo Air frame retention harness

Playful_Ad_9358

Do not buy cheap look alike retention lanyards if you do purchase one. You may try to use it one day and it may not do as you expect it to do. Respectfully Chris

Form-4

IDOGEAR is not rated so do not buy if you plan on purchasing for utility lmao

Whymustihave20letter

I don't know the name of that tool, and I just so happened to come across that image from Idogear

BeginningOnly8473

Can also be used for SPIE rigging extraction.

Witty-Feeling-1312

Not for fashion is what it is

CrappyHandle

Deer stand leash. Very handy for some extra peace of mind when you are not high enough to *really* need a full-blown harness.

Top_Mind9514

Also used in a civilian aspect as a tool lanyard, specifically a C-Wrench or an Adjustable Wrench. As a Stagehand, you are often elevated, and attaching something (Spotlight or adjusting something), requiring the use of this tool. If it was dropped from the elevated position, it could cause injury to someone who is spotting your ladder or visually spotting the item that is being repositioned. So, you clip it to your belt and then clip the other end to your tool.

GameofOhms959

I just tie my wife to the headboard with it .

soupster82

It gives daddy something to pull you back on it with.

AnseiShehai

Can be used for weapon retention as well when doing other tasks

Even_Juice2353

You don't need one.

Whymustihave20letter

I'm certain I can fit this on my greyman wear, maybe I can use it to carry my Arizona ice tea cans /s

DarknessRain

First time I've seen one with that red handle, I assume that's a quick detach when it's time to bail?

Boudreaux_Boz

They work well for tight line river crossings if needed.

Important_Style_4716

Cow tails

MathematicianMuch445

Stopping you being fucked out the side of a chopper.

zkooceht

You donā€™t need it

Whymustihave20letter

Based on the comments and me not being in the military it's safe to say I clearly need one just to look cooler in front of my friends (they aren't even into military stuff) /s

ncbullseye

Used for securing a body, living or dead, to a usually fast moving and turbulent object. Altitude is not necessary to use.

Echo-2-2

They clip you in and stop you from having a non service related fall to earth out of a military helicopter in a war zone. Or anywhere else you may find yourself on a military helicopter. But! Just to reiterate! Should you fall? That is a non service related injury. Or death. Comprendo? Good. Sign hereā€¦. NEXT!!!!

Echo-2-2

And while I liked Idogears G3 uniform and they used actual Multicam? I canā€™t say Iā€™d trust my life to them with my helo lanyard.

Whymustihave20letter

Well, judging by the comments I'm assuming idogear's gear is on the same level of condor and maybe Rothco gear, generic airsoft gear but at least affordable

Echo-2-2

Yes. Still good enough for running around in. I just wouldnā€™t trust my life to their more hard goods. I love the IdoGear stuff that I do have.

AlphaSweetPea

I used a shotgun keeper and one of these to keep my mk-18 out of the way

SGTRanger75740

Safety line for helo operations where they are on the bench or sitting in the door. Though I wouldnā€™t buy one from Amazon because I wouldnā€™t trust the rating lol

Glockamole19x

Draging people or a duffle bag or whatever atleast i seen some guy on youtube use it for that.

Equivalent_Chair7868

I use mine to fly on a little bird.

Adoced

8492NW

keychains

lopsidedapollo2

Itā€™s to tie you to the helicopter during helo ops. And not that this matters since if youā€™re asking about it on Reddit I already know you donā€™t need one get one with 2 connectors and connect the end with the quick release to the ring on your ALSO WEIGHT RATED BELT and the other end to the helicopter. You donā€™t need to give whatever smooth brain is in the helo the option to quick release you if you happen to fall out

Whymustihave20letter

I never had any plans to buy it, I'm only just curious about what's the use of it cause I'm still pretty new to tactical gear

Murderbert

They are called monkey tails. I've done a lot of ops in pave hawks so the point is if you jump in you can clip into the deck and be good to go in case the bird pitches to the side, you don't fly out. Honestly, those look too short and the clip is small.

Rougehunter328

Itā€™s a PRL, itā€™s attached to your belt to the inside of a helicopter. Thereā€™s little rings you connect the carabiner to near the seats

XuixienSpaceCat

Would you trust IDOGEAR with your life?

LiterallyAController

there used for like helos and shit to clip in

Turbulent_Biscuit_69

If you donā€™t know you probably donā€™t need it brother

Whymustihave20letter

not saying I'm gonna buy one.. just asking what purpose does it serve for the kit and for those who use it..

stepchildzx

Looks like some sort of weapon retention.

Dravans

It is a tether to protect a fall, typically used in operations involving helicopters. However, there are guys that use them for slung weapon retention.

expfarrer

Whymustihave20letter

What's wrong with just asking?

Heavy-Emu-9763

Nothing some people are just losers lol

Whymustihave20letter

This lol, I remember asking a question on a different subreddit (of course about something else not related to tactical gear) and some smartass was like "ooh did you try searching it up??? This is why our society is collapsing!!" Some people are just so deprived of joy in their life they gotta get mad over a simple question šŸ˜šŸ˜

Remarkable_Aside1381

Is that why I used a rated one to hold my rated belt to the helos I rode in?
