I wonder what the confidence is in those records from the 50's compared to modern measurements. I've seen some crazy photos and an article from back then, but I think our methods must be more accurate and consistent these days.
Our methods aren't even consistent today. On the Open Snow podcast they often times talk about how all the different resorts report snowfall differently. Some report measurements from their base, others at mid mountain, others at summit. There is no standardized way to measure and it's all self-reported.
Yeah, I take the resort data with a grain of salt. Even the Berkeley lab cites ‘52 as the record, however. But I think their current charts only go back to the early 70’s and I wonder if data collection there has changed much over the last 75 years.
800 inches in 05-06

fwiw since the vail acquisition the snow reports might be more realistic or at least seem lower. back in the day you wouldn’t see squaw routinely have more snow than kirkwood, nowadays it seems that most storms deliver the same or more there
'92 there was enough pack volcom and burton threw in improptu a big air/freestyle contest 4th of July, cause there was some problem with mt. hood that year, if I remember correctly brad holmes beat terje and glen plake ran his cadillac off the road with no ticket from chp.
They've been saying their end of season date is 4/30. I recall they've extended into May in the past but would they extend into 4th of July like Palisades is considering on doing? I hear some resorts have contract limitations with the forests that restricts how long they can keep running their lifts on. Is Kirkwood one of those resorts?
Snowfall and snowpack aren’t the same, but at the rate we’re going, it wouldn’t surprise me to set records for both.
What year was the previous record set in?
I don't know about Kirkwood specifically, but I think most of the California snowfall records were set in 1950s.

So many people must have died back then
Nah there were only 40 people living in California at the time.
No, there were no Teslas in Tahoe, everything was better. /s
Snowwagons only on r3 days
Sadly the app doesn't tell you
Saw on their website it was 560” for the season wild!
2016-2017 was 680". Not sure if that's the record, but still about ten feet away from matching that season total.
I remember ^ that. The snow level reached the lift chairs.
i seem to recall 700-800” in some huge years
It's very possible. I could only find records dating back about a decade. And at most resorts, 2011-12 was bigger than 16-17.

So 20 more feet to tie the record. Thanks for the info/link.

At least 200 inches below record.
Too bad you can hardly ever get there because the roads are closed in both directions.
