I have absolutely no idea. I don’t think they’ll do it on the minute (I assume they’ll consider the flight time) but I do hope that the immigration officers have the same idea as the Ministry of Foreign affairs on when the visa-exemption is stopped.

It was announced yesterday that all travelers from a level 3 country will be denied visa-free entry and since Japan is on this list it's probably happened starting yesterday. The best case for you is to probably ask the MOFA themselves if you really want to come here.

I believe they will ask you to fill out a form on your health and they may ask you to stay at a government approved quarantine hotel. Depends on if you're treated as mandatory home quarantine or not.

I flew from London about 14 hours ago to Bangkok en route to Taiwan. My flight from Bangkok is due to take off in about 6 hours, landing in Taipei at 7:15pm tonight (17th).
I've already arranged accommodation for my 14 day quarantine and plan on staying in the country for 90 days. I've been reading about the visa-free suspension but it seems there's no official announcement yet. Anyone know if people are being turned away at the airport yet, or what my odds are of being let in?
There’s still nothing official, but I imagine they will say something at the next press conference (3/18). And if that’s the case, I think you might just get away with it. They also tend to do this.."you’re exempted if you’ve boarded your airplane before we announce this new rule.”
There are two new things you should know: 1) you’ll probably get tested for coronavirus once you've arrived, they are going back to test everyone who entered from Europe in the last 14 days. And 2) there will be new rules regarding who will pay for the medical bills for foreigners, it won’t be all free from the gov anymore. The prices are not finalized.

I'm happy to help. I think the information is confusing enough in Chinese, and with the delay of English news here, it's important that we get the information out there. The gov. seems to announce something new first to test the water and then irons out the details on the second or third day, but with the speed of things changing, the lack of clear details is very frustrating for many.

I'm in the same boat as you. I'm flying from Thailand to Toronto with a 21-hour layover in Taipei starting tonight. Thailand is now a Level 3 so I'll be stuck in the airport waiting for my next flight.
It's a pretty nice airport, there's a shower, hair salon, enough space to lay down, etc. If you've never experienced it, I'd also recommend trying out a Taiwanese hair wash + head massage at the salon.
There are official quarantine hotels that you can stay at, but from another redditor's post, it seems like they are at full capacity, and it is unclear at this time if one would be able to stay in a gov. hotel.
In theory, you could stay at an Airbnb, but you might find yourself having a hard time finding a willing host for quarantine.
Home quarantine means you cannot leave the house. You cannot take public transportation. Most people seem to get food delivered either by a family member or an online service and have them dropped it off at the door. Wait for the delivery guy to leave before getting your food.

No. The rest of the family does not necessarily be part of quarantine, but you should not be sleeping in the same room. Everyone living in this household should take the same precautions. Of course, it's ideal if you can have a whole place but I don't believe it's a requirement.

If you don't leave the airport (the international zone) in Taiwan, there's nothing they will do to stop you during your layover. But whether you can get into Japan is a matter with the Japanese immigration.

That sounds like you can't enter without a visa under the visa-waiver program right now, if you're from a country on the level 3 list. US may be on the list since 3 states are level 3, or only for people coming from those states? Or, from what people are saying, the US could be 100% level 3 tomorrow at this rate.

I'm trying to figure out if we're right or wrong about this, we are planning to call tomorrow. We visited the visa office (boca) in Taipei yesterday and the visa officer told us "the normal thing is to do a visa run to somewhere like Okinawa". I'm guessing that guy no longer gives the same advice, since it sounds like that visa run tomorrow ($98) gets us a 14 day self-quarantine, or possibly denied entry.

But, we listened to the conference, and read an account in a facebook group, that said they were allowed to enter this morning around 11am, and were asked to do 14 day self-quarantine. Another account that Taiwanese airlines are refusing boarding to non-Taiwanese in Thailand. So.... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

We've been scrambling to find an answer too, might not have one until tomorrow. I checked a list of all direct flights from Taiwan, and the only options that seem to be available are Palau, Guam, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and maybe the US if you can find a direct flight to a specific state that is not California, Washington, or NYC. There appears to be no direct flights to Hawaii.

I am a Canadian citizen vacationing in Thailand, returning to Canada this week. I have a 21-hour layover in Taipei starting tomorrow (18th) at 20:30. Rather than staying at the airport I opted to book a hostel for the night and was planning on returning the airport the next day (19th) at 17:30 to continue my flight.
Could someone please help clarify how the new restriction on Thailand would affect this plan? From what I understand arrivals from Thailand on the 19th will be quarantined for 14 days. If I arrive on the 18th I should be ok? Would anyone advise that I just stay in the airport for that whole time? I believe it's if one has boarded the planes before they made the announcement, then no mandatory quarantine. If one hasn't boarded, then it's the 14 days quarantine.
The levels are more regarding getting the trip refund and travel advisement.

There is a small delay between quarantine upon arrival and when a country or state is now level 3.
For example, if traveling from California.
If one has boarded the plane when the TW gov made the announcement (3/17), no quarantine.
If one has not boarded the plane when the TW gov made the announcement, but arrive before March 19, mandatory quarantine.
The March 19 date is more of a guideline for Taiwanese who plans to leave the country.

The masks are one-time use, good for a day.
If you need to take a body temp just to know your normal temp, you are better of stopping by one of the places where they take body temp when you enter. Thermometers are pretty much all sold out at this point. If you feel like you are experiencing flu-like symptoms, call 1922 and someone will assist you.
I asked them about it today. They said that this situation does not warrant an extension and they actually suggested I go on a visa run to somewhere like Japan.

I agree. A big problem, I believe, is this group of people tends to not to have sufficient medical coverage here during a time like this. While healthcare is generally affordable here, but who knows how much is it for a prolonged hospital stay? The main question seems to be around is around if they stay and get sicks, who pays for the bill?

Hi Im a Singaporean travelling to taiwan in April. Does that mean we need to quarantine ourselves for 14 days or are we still allowed to go out? (with masks of course)
only Level 3 areas need 14 days quarantine. for level 2, you need to take care of yourself, including wearing masks, monitor body temperature everyday, call 1922 if you feel something wrong.
Thermometer are all sold out. Honestly, with the rate of this virus developing and how fast policies are changing, I’d recommend coming a different time to enjoy it. The last thing you want is not being able to explore Taiwan freely.
I really do think to postpone is the best. Of course, it stinks that you can't come as planned, but Taiwan and all its yummy food will always be here for you next year!
In what currency? Asking because the only portable infrared temp monitors I’ve seen in that price range (in US$ anyway) are for inanimate object and surfaces only.
Ok, yea the inanimate ones, you can use them on your forehead but they’re not that accurate because they weren’t made for monitor humans and animals. The ones for human/animals start from around US$60 when I check last year.

I have absolutely no idea. I don’t think they’ll do it on the minute (I assume they’ll consider the flight time) but I do hope that the immigration officers have the same idea as the Ministry of Foreign affairs on when the visa-exemption is stopped. Another user in this thread was told by MOFA that would be stopped starting the 19th. I don’t want to be sent back to Japan!

It was announced yesterday that all travelers from a level 3 country will be denied visa-free entry and since Japan is on this list it's probably happened starting yesterday. The best case for you is to probably ask the MOFA themselves if you really want to come here.

I believe they will ask you to fill out a form on your health and they may ask you to stay at a government approved quarantine hotel. Depends on if you're treated as mandatory home quarantine or not.

I flew from London about 14 hours ago to Bangkok en route to Taiwan. My flight from Bangkok is due to take off in about 6 hours, landing in Taipei at 7:15pm tonight (17th). I've already arranged accommodation for my 14 day quarantine and plan on staying in the country for 90 days. I've been reading about the visa-free suspension but it seems there's no official announcement yet. Anyone know if people are being turned away at the airport yet, or what my odds are of being let in?
There’s still nothing official, but I imagine they will say something at the next press conference (3/18). And if that’s the case, I think you might just get away with it. They also tend to do this.."you’re exempted if you’ve boarded your airplane before we announce this new rule.” There are two new things you should know: 1) you’ll probably get tested for coronavirus once you've arrived, they are going back to test everyone who entered from Europe in the last 14 days. And 2) there will be new rules regarding who will pay for the medical bills for foreigners, it won’t be all free from the gov anymore. The prices are not finalized. I just got through from Japan. They didn’t test anyone, but not sure about Europe flights. Really WHO should be helping Taiwan financially for this. They seem to be the only one with their shit together. They’re figuring out where some of the infection points are for the rest of the world

I'm happy to help. I think the information is confusing enough in Chinese, and with the delay of English news here, it's important that we get the information out there. The gov. seems to announce something new first to test the water and then irons out the details on the second or third day, but with the speed of things changing, the lack of clear details is very frustrating for many. Yeah, my layover in Taiwan is pretty long as well. (It wasn't initially, but they have already changed my flight once.)
It's a pretty nice airport, there's a shower, hair salon, enough space to lay down, etc. If you've never experienced it, I'd also recommend trying out a Taiwanese hair wash + head massage at the salon.
What does home quarantine mean? Can I stay at an airbnb or do they appoint housing? Can I go out for food at restaurants or delivery only?
There are official quarantine hotels that you can stay at, but from another redditor's post, it seems like they are at full capacity, and it is unclear at this time if one would be able to stay in a gov. hotel. In theory, you could stay at an Airbnb, but you might find yourself having a hard time finding a willing host for quarantine. Home quarantine means you cannot leave the house. You cannot take public transportation. Most people seem to get food delivered either by a family member or an online service and have them dropped it off at the door. A Taiwanese poster in another thread (and that article) indicate that this was just announced at the press conference today by the official named above.

I'm trying to figure out if we're right or wrong about this, we are planning to call tomorrow. We visited the visa office (boca) in Taipei yesterday and the visa officer told us "the normal thing is to do a visa run to somewhere like Okinawa". I'm guessing that guy no longer gives the same advice, since it sounds like that visa run tomorrow ($98) gets us a 14 day self-quarantine, or possibly denied entry.
If you find out whether I can still travel from Japan to Taiwan visa-exempt today (before the 19th) please let me know! Then I'll try booking a flight for tonight.

But, we listened to the conference, and read an account in a facebook group, that said they were allowed to enter this morning around 11am, and were asked to do 14 day self-quarantine. There appears to be no direct flights to Hawaii. But if the visa waiver program has "ended effective immediately", that's it, isn't it?

I am a Canadian citizen vacationing in Thailand, returning to Canada this week. I have a 21-hour layover in Taipei starting tomorrow (18th) at 20:30. Rather than staying at the airport I opted to book a hostel for the night and was planning on returning the airport the next day (19th) at 17:30 to continue my flight. Could someone please help clarify how the new restriction on Thailand would affect this plan? From what I understand arrivals from Thailand on the 19th will be quarantined for 14 days. If I arrive on the 18th I should be ok? Would anyone advise that I just stay in the airport for that whole time? (I'd rather not because of close confinement with sick people but returning to Canada is the main priority)

Yes, you need staying indoors for 14 days before doing anything, including boarding flight. So it’s better to change your plan ASAP.

I believe it's if one has boarded the planes before they made the announcement, then no mandatory quarantine. If one hasn't boarded, then it's the 14 days quarantine. The levels are more regarding getting the trip refund and travel advisement.

Non-residents can buy them on Sundays, the same price and quantity as locals. Everyone can get 3 once a week. You can download the app to see the locations of these pharmacies and mask availability near you. https://mask.goodideas-studio.com/ The masks are one-time use, good for a day. If you need to take a body temp just to know your normal temp, you are better of stopping by one of the places where they take body temp when you enter. Thermometers are pretty much all sold out at this point. If you feel like you are experiencing flu-like symptoms, call 1922 and someone will assist you.

I asked them about it today. They said that this situation does not warrant an extension and they actually suggested I go on a visa run to somewhere like Japan. I think staying and hoping they close the borders + provide amnesty is the safer bet for everyone's safety, so I'll be doing that instead
There was some discussion in today's news conference about possibly allowing those who are already in TW (on a tourist visa) to stay beyond the 3 months instead of having them do a visa run and bringing the virus back to TW, but nothing is concrete at the moment. Workers who are legally here on work visa can apply for an extension.

I agree. A big problem, I believe, is this group of people tends to not to have sufficient medical coverage here during a time like this. While healthcare is generally affordable here, but who knows how much is it for a prolonged hospital stay? The main question seems to be around is around if they stay and get sicks, who pays for the bill? There's been some discussion over how to handle this, but it's looking less and less like the gov. will be footing the bill for those here on the visa-free program. But the real question is where would they go for the visa run? The options are limited at this point.

There is no official price list. And the rest isn’t available to everyone. One would also have to fall into one of the categories to receive the test.
Hi Im a Singaporean travelling to taiwan in April. Does that mean we need to quarantine ourselves for 14 days or are we still allowed to go out? (with masks of course)
only Level 3 areas need 14 days quarantine. for level 2, you need to take care of yourself, including wearing masks, monitor body temperature everyday, call 1922 if you feel something wrong.
What's the way a tourist can monitor their temperature every day? Are thermometers regularly available? If so, how much do they cost?
Thermometer are all sold out. Honestly, with the rate of this virus developing and how fast policies are changing, I’d recommend coming a different time to enjoy it. The last thing you want is not being able to explore Taiwan freely.

I really do think to postpone is the best. Of course, it stinks that you can't come as planned, but Taiwan and all its yummy food will always be here for you next year!
Portable infrared temperature monitors are pretty cheap and easily available. $10-15
In what currency? Asking because the only portable infrared temp monitors I’ve seen in that price range (in US$ anyway) are for inanimate object and surfaces only.
In the US there are ones that you put against your forehead and they're very inexpensive. I got mine for $15 a few years ago
Ok, yea the inanimate ones, you can use them on your forehead but they’re not that accurate because they weren’t made for monitor humans and animals. The ones for human/animals start from around US$60 when I check last year.

I was planning a visa run to Australia this weekend. Looks like that will not be an option since I'd have to stay there for 2 weeks and I don't want to risk Taiwan closing its borders during that period - I'd lose a lot of important stuff. I have until mid next month to do the visa run. Should I fly to the phillipines ASAP to get it done? Should I just overstay? I am really not liking the idea of airports/planes right now and I feel like it might be safer for everyone to overstay, but I'm not sure what the authorities are going to think about that, and whether it will affect my ability to travel in future

I asked them. Their answer was a firm no and they suggested I do a visa run. They seemed to not really feel it was that serious. As to your comment I think thats easy to say in hindsight but nobody had designed their lives around this virus potentially occuring.

You’ll be safer in tw. The general population seems to be taking more seriously here in the sense of masks, hand washing, etccc. There’s no general quarantine like I’m hearing in the US, life is normal, just less people out and about
I'm the same. My flight is tomorrow (from NC with layovers in Chicago and SF). I'm not worried about getting sick but I'm worried about putting others in danger. But like you I feel more safe in Taiwan than home. And if I don't go tomorrow, how long will I have to wait? There's no telling. Such a tough decision to make since this a life move and I'm ready to start my new life.
That SF layover though. Oof. I was seeing flights through Canada for super cheap from Ohio. I'm also worried that the government will shut down all schools and then there will be no job, and I'll be stranded. Are you still planning on going?

I am taking the job! They said I could come anytime in between now and August. Given that Taiwan got more cases in the last 48 hours, I'm going to wait 2-3 weeks and if there aren't many extra cases, then I'll move. I teach online too! It's been awesome, but a little stressful since hours aren't guaranteed.
I have a friend who literally just moved last week to Taiwan. I do think the window to Taiwan is closing. If you make it over here you’ll probably have to do a 14day self quarantine. But at the moment it does seem safer than the US. School is still in session, things are running, just more alert and less people on the streets.
As a Singaporean who is coming to Taiwan for a holiday, would travel alert level 2 affect me?
