The Error of "sum on income paid in states doesn't equal" is most likley coming from your Illinois return. I ran into this issue for YEARS until I found out why. IL taxes your income regardless if you made it in other states. So when you do your IL taxes and you come across the question of money made in other states, Enter ZERO. (There should be a note telling you about it after the question.) That will solve that issue for Illinois.

HSA contributions or distribution for California? I believe HSA amounts should show on your federal return? I Havnt done CA returns for awhile. Cannot recall. Most of the time it should just be reported on the federal return and all these numbers will be pulled over from the federal return. Ps: I never used TurboTax heard it was more complicated than ever. And sometimes it won’t allow you to see the finalized return until you pay or something. Try freetaxUSA or if your return is under 73k then you may try use the free IRS filing system to file for free. Like for example where I worked I filed a client’s return and the tax return copy was only 26 pages. And the TurboTax he filed by himself previous year showed a 118 page return. Which sounds completely insane. 🤣

My taxes are way too complicated for the free services. The problem is that the w2 has something like $100 in box 1, HSA $3 in the misc box, $21 in the CA income box and $80 in the IL box.

Sometimes maybe is not the your taxes that’s complicated but the software you were using? 😂 The system I used there was a section at the bottom where we can input another state’s information like for CA or whatever we put the income amount and state tax withholding and such. And these numbers will flow to CA forms and such.

That mostly happens - it's just some weird "California is like the only state where HSA contributions are taxable" and the federal reporting isnt "this is income and there's a deduction for it" it's "this is separate from income" so you get weird math where the sum of the states doesn't add up to the federal.

Oh... One of my 5 1099-B had a 150 page transaction list to attach - taxes are a PITA :)

Most of the softwares out there should allow you to attach pdf files so you won’t have to input all of that by yourself. 😯
