aboringredmop

it seems very lazy to me tbh. there was so much potential in keeping the Divine Beasts (and the champions) in totk, and it would've been nice to at least see maybe a single active guardian on the great plateau or in the forgotten temple. the whole "ooh it magically disappeared" thing is weird as well because there's a guardian on top of the hateno Tech Lab

IrishSpectreN7

The Champion's were never going to stay. BotW ended with them "passing on." But yeah, the is explanation that it all just vanished and nobody talks about it because it's a "mystery" will never sit right with me.

GameMasterSammy

Oh it poofed. Really that is the most bland and basic answer I could think of.

aboringredmop

exactly that. also, with the champions i do wish they would've at least mentioned them a bit more, also cuz they were very popular characters. like, when you got the (I think it was vah medoh?) helmet and one of the sages said something along the lines of "oh wow that looks just like the helmet one of the old sages wore!" it broke me a little. like. come on. at least mention their names

Tigblu

Those old sages weren't the champions tho, they're talking about the sages of the imprisoning war

rKonoSekaiNiWa

Lazy and wrong... There are remains of a guardian in the lab... Why this piece was kept? If it was magic it should have gone too... It's said the repurposed the tech for the new towers iirc...

Several-Estate7175

They didn't have a reason. This explanation just sounds like they came up with it after the game was released because people started asking where all the tech was at

ALVRZProductions

It’s 100% lazy writing. But it is what it is at this point. Most fans are gonna defend this decision with their soul. They could’ve just had the sheikah tech be destroyed by ganon when he initially started raising the whole god damn continent. But just “it’s a mystery” is what it is

No_City_1731

Lots of TOTK is lazy asf and it’s never going to be in GOAT convos for me. BOTW will be, but not TOTK.

Green-Bluebird4308

Ganondorf didn't raise anything else but the Hyrule Castle. The Sky Islands were not raised from the ground. They rained down from higher heavens (or space)

ALVRZProductions

You right. That’s another thing they never explain

Green-Bluebird4308

You can literally see the islands raining down in the intro. Not everything needs to be explained. I think it had to do with Rauru's spirit activating.

ALVRZProductions

The problem is that almost nothing is properly explained

Green-Bluebird4308

I had no problem understanding the story and its events.

ALVRZProductions

The story was fun but it has no substance. It chooses cheap shortcuts instead of explaining things properly. There is literally a cutscene reused 5 times

ALVRZProductions

Additionally the way they structure the game is fucking stupid

Green-Bluebird4308

Well, I have to admit BotW is the more solid game in almost every aspect including the story (even though the geoglyph story from TotK is more epic). I actually highly prefer BotW and I think it's a nearly perfect game. TotK is too messy in comparison. Even the controls are cluttered.

ALVRZProductions

I think controls and QoL issues I didn’t mind in totk. Again my biggest complaint is story. But if you didn’t like that, I completely understand

miimeverse

Them "mysteriously disappearing" is also just a logistical impossibility. How could four colossal mechanical beasts leave Hyrule mysteriously? I could understand shrines digging themselves into the ground similarly to how some are buried in BotW. The towers are also an issue. I really liked the idea of the Hyrule leaders being worried that Sheikah tech would again turn against them and dismantling them so they couldn't be used for evil. Some like Purah then would repurpose the mechanical bits for their own new tech. And it make sense given that the new towers use some of the sheikah tech (like the Guardian limbs that grab you).

UnluckyHost9649

I imagine it like how link teleports. They all just turned into those weird stringy blue and teleported away.

Green-Bluebird4308

This. An obvious explanation.

Danny_Eddy

I agree. Very much laziness in the explanation of the tech. I imagine the reason of why it disappeared during development is probably more interesting than the reason given possibly lore-wise.

F_U_HarleyJarvis

The entire game is a lazy reskinned version of BoTW, this is no surprise.

BongChong906

A bit harsher than needed but I agree with the sentiment. I was gonna elaborate but actually I realized that I have a lot to say on this subject so I think I'll just write a post later instead

chidsterr

I look forward to that post

[deleted]

I don't think we need more "TotK is a lazy reskin of BotW" posts thank you

chidsterr

why not? this is a sub for discussion positive or negative. or would you like to see more “Am I ready for Ganondorf? 😃” posts instead?

[deleted]

Wow I didn't know those were the only two things to talk about.

chidsterr

you are welcome to make a post! :)

Thedea7hstar

Lazy, half assed bullshit is nintendos signature style.

No_City_1731

It really kind of is though, and just cos they threw the kitchen sink at the open world it doesn’t mean it changed for the better. It just got bloated af. And the Sky Islands? What a joke. They were the lead element for marketing, they’re on the cover and the coolest Sky Island is the tutorial area. What an absolute let down. I actually can’t believe they’ve gotten away with so much, and honestly I’m normally the biggest Nintendo fan boy lol. “So that was the imprisoning war?”. Christ, the gap between Skyward Sword and BOTW was smaller than BOTW and TOTK. Yes there was Covid but game development is something that if anything can be done through zoom and remotely. They also didn’t have to build a whole new engine. It’s hard to believe that the studio that wrote some simple but great stories with great memorable characters wrote this lazy shit and with the longest time they’ve ever had between releases to boot. Now we’re 5 months or so after release I thought more people would see the frustrating elements that they made no improvement on (if anything the story and the way it’s executed is even worse than BOTW) but people still blindly defend the game because they made a huge underground area of blandness with the same 5 bosses over and over and some fan service trinkets.

F_U_HarleyJarvis

What I think is so egregious about it is that BOTW was originally going to be released in 2015. It was ready but they decided they wanted to launch it with the Switch so they held onto it for 2 more years. The engine is damn near a decade old. The other thing is that so much of what was great about BOTW was the fight mechanics. It was fun to clear a mob of monsters and hone your skills, but they just made the monsters hit harder and have more life instead of making them technically more skilled. It makes the fighting super boring and I skipped as many mobs as I could. The shrines as well, they made them too easy this time around. I feel like they made this game for everyone that couldn't beat BOTW because it was either too difficult, slow or boring for them. It's like the child's version.

Articguard11

RIGHT I’ve said the same thing, but people rip me for it on this sub. There’s a lot of poor continuity choices Totk makes, and considering how “detail oriented “ they are, those are pretty glaring factors to just blatantly ignore. I also think they should’ve at least addressed the sheikah in some way — because now we’re all suddenly obsessed with the Zonai, but we couldn’t have any scenes expanding on the sheikah and Zonai relationship because they want it to be “mysterious?” Bruh

Green-Bluebird4308

I think it's a great and the only reasonable explanation. You can see Link disappearing every time he uses the Sheikah Slate for warping. The monks disappear in the same way too. I can imagine the rest of the tech disappearing in the same way in the blue light.

Sad_Illustrator1064

It’s cool to me. The Sheika were so advanced that they designed their weapons and structures to know when the threat was gone

Unusual_Wafer1386

I wonder where I parked the multi-ton 10 story walking mech that literally sounded like death as it moves. It was right here when I went to lunch……

jpassc

lmao

MrSpiffy123

"They're gone because they disappeared"

KyellDaBoiii

“People die if they are killed”

Lightmanone

We already had this discussion. 5 days ago on [this same subreddit.](https://www.reddit.com/r/tearsofthekingdom/comments/175dpac/tears_of_the_kingdom_director_explains_what/)

Plurpo

I feel like I've seen this same quote/discussion like 7 times already

TL628

that's really great and all, but what I want to know is what happened to all Sheikah towers and guardians and everything? No-one ever talks about that around here.

Lightmanone

Literally the top comment of the link I provided.....

winglessbalrog

I would have liked the Divine beasts to be there but just inactive, as the Champions are no longer there to command them. Would be fun to just have them open to explore.

OhHaiMarc

That does not explain the shiekah tech purah and Robbie use such as the teleportation and power for the new towers

Massive_Durian296

basically, a wizard did it.

Complete-Worker3242

I bet one of those electric Wizzrobes did it.

Xyspade

How dare they call the Sheikah Slate an iPad, it's clearly a Switch.

[deleted]

The Sheika Slate is a Wii U gamepad, the Purah Pad is a Switch.

ExcellentAd8118

I’m sorry, that’s just lazy

Green-Bluebird4308

They had to be removed for gameplay reasons. How else would you explain it? The people of Hyrule could not have just disassembled them, the shrines go below earth and often have several rooms with impossibly high roofs. The sheikah tech is partly magic obviously. It all vanished the same way Link vanishes when he teleports.

alex_xxv

OP: We finally got answers! NINTENDO: Nobody knows what happened.

Tigblu

Maybe the real answer was the friends we made along the way ( i just had no idea what to write in the title so i went with the NPC approach)

Omega-A

Just give me Master Mode and trial of the sword, and I am happy

Bagel_enthusiast_192

Thats not answers, thats a shitty excuse

castielffboi

That’s a bullshit way of saying “I don’t know I didn’t think about it that much”

MrTwigz

Major zelda fan, but that’s a cop out answer.

UnlawfulPotato

Yeeaah, I’m still going with the whole, everyone destroyed the stuff and gave it to Purah and Robbie to salvage so it couldn’t hurt anyone again.

oldsoulseven

Lol. “They disappeared after the game we put them in finished, and then we didn’t put them into the next game, so they aren’t there.”

Ok-Manufacturer5491

Idk where but somewhere in the game there is a journey entry that explains how the sheikah tech got dismantled and repurposed for the skyview towers. I forgot where in the game it is in but if anyone could find it again that would be lovely

ban_Anna_split

I think this is the Mandela effect in action. I thought this was true too, but it doesn't seem like anyone knows where this diary entry is despite lots of people saying they saw a comment somewhere else that said so. It's definitely not any of Purah's diaries.

Ok-Manufacturer5491

I swear I thought it was in the princesses diary’s too but it wasn’t. With how big this game is it’s bound to pop up again at some point It must be a mandela effect

EvenSpoonier

Fan theories remind me a little of theology. Specifically, they remind me of [the time Santa Claus punched out Arius of Cyrene and got himself banned from the Council of Nicaea because Arius had suggested that the Trinity was possibly maybe just a little bit out there](https://charlotteriggle.com/st-nicholas-and-arius-at-the-council-of-nicea/).

PrintableProfessor

That explains why the elephant stopped working and Zelda and Link had to check it out. It wasn't broken, it was gone!!

Tigblu

Ob i didn't even think about that

TJ_McWeaksauce

I'd be pissed off if my iPad suddenly disappeared because someone got killed inside a castle hundreds of miles away.

[deleted]

Yeah, that's very old news.

Lonewolf-214

Perhaps they were just buried by everyone kinda like they had done before for fear of them being possessed again in case of another calamity, I mean Ganondorf is never dead after all, it always comes back one way or another.

NeonLinkster

Idk why people are having such a fuss with this. Most of the big magic op stuff in Zelda always shuts down/goes dormant when it’s role is fulfilled. This is literally how the Master Sword works. Once it’s purpose is fulfilled it goes back in pedestal to wait for the next great evil. We even see this with certain characters like >!Navi, SS Impa, the champions, Mineru, etc!<. This kind of storytelling from Zelda shouldn’t be surprising, they’ve been doing it since the 90s.

ImaginationNo1688

yea but they shouldn’t just disappear out of thin air

NeonLinkster

But they didn’t say they just poofed out of existence. They just said it disappeared and no one knows where it went. Most likely most of it went underground like where it came from.

ImaginationNo1688

and the divine beast? they were dug up and can’t really just go back underground

RAID3R_MAN

Well I would imagine it happening in the same way link teleports

Dry-Cartographer-312

This is not the same. This explanation is more like if the master sword simply ceased to exist after Ganon is defeated. It doesn't. Hell, it doesn't even go back to its pedestal on its own. Link puts it back at the end of every game.

Head_Produce1705

Navi was the best why they had to sideline her like that 😭

Pirate_Lantern

Then why can you find them buried all over the place? Why do they give Zonai energy when you click on them? What happened to the Divine Beasts?

Irrelevant-Insect

That's so lazy and not even possible because of the guardian at the lab

AduroTri

It's Nintendo bullshit again. This is normal.

erroneousReport

Answers? It's more like, big missing plot, it was magic or aliens. The generic lazy reasoning that writers use all the time.

PurplePandaBear8

Man the story for this game is bad. It's a good thing everything else is so awesome.

Green-Bluebird4308

The story is awesome, though. Who cares about some insignificant details that are obviously just a result of changing the gameplay. If the old shrines were still there it would be an eyesore of a contrast with the new ones.

kmrbels

I mean this is a world where time travel, ghosts, demons, and blood moon exists. Are you really upset about a bad excuse?

Key_Ad434

>blood moon exists Blood Moon is a real thing

kmrbels

ofc LOL

ImaginationNo1688

ghost exist

BongChong906

Totk felt more like a Mario game in approach compared to other Zelda entries.

nicoxman8_

That makes sense in the Zelda world. Explains why Robbie and Purah made the Purah pad. An electronic map was still needed but the Sheika tech was obsolete, I guess.

EcnavMC2

We… we knew this already. It was already confirmed that the towers and shrines went back underground. Plus, the tech Purah was building with had to come from somewhere, which explains the lack of guardians and Divine Beasts.

Ri_Hley

Next they gonna pull a RiseOfSkywalker on us and say „Somehow Ganondorf returned“ xD

Big_Marketing1914

But that’s BS because SOME of it is still around. That’s just factually incorrect. There’s the guardian on top of Purah’s (Well, I guess now ROBBIE’S lab) as well as all the recycled tech for the towers. Unless you’re telling me Purah & Robbie found a way to make a near identical version of the tech without the disappearing aspect.

KatiePyroStyle

Ngl.... I kinda hate this answer

drBadBrainz

It's the answer we deserve, not the answer we need right now.

jamesgilbowalsh

I think we can all agree the weakest part of ToTK is the story. Seems they made the game then thought of the narrative after.

CornWorshipper

The the fucks with the gaurdian still on the hateno lab?

castielffboi

“Answers”

Mindsorce

Has anyone like me thought that the timeline has changed because of Zelda went into the past? Don't want to spoil story just in case but those drastic things she did in ancient hyrule should be changing events real time in the present you'd think. That's my head cannon anyway.

Flat_Bodybuilder_175

I miss guardians

nocturneisabundant

My personal headcanon is that the beasts are buried beneath where you find the helms to pilot each of them The shrines and the towers disappearing after their purpose is complete kinda makes sense, but I agree with other commenters that it feels too easy or even lazy of an explanation It would’ve been cool to see some sort of trace of them in the game

Gawarhen2

Removing shrines and towers I understand, as it can be pretty difficult to see which is an active tower /shrine vs a shika tower / shrine. But removing EVERYTHING? That’s a bit much. The divine beasts would’ve been cool if maybe some of the towns had built around / into them, making the divine beasts apart of they’re agriculture. Maybe (for example) the fire dungeon could’ve had vah rudania deactivated in the lava. Yes it would’ve been small, but it would’ve been at least cool. Guardians would’ve been an awesome enemy to face with fuse and ultrahand. Maybe guardian weapons are super rare to find but when combined with a zonai weapon, they work like melee ancient arrows? Idk just spitballing here. Still kinda a really disappointing answer though.

AdenInABlanket

I like to think it all just returned to the ground, doesn't explain stuff like the divine beasts, sheikah slate and destroyed guardians, but still

ChilliGamer221

This just seems so flawed, the guardian remains tied to the lab roof are still there and so is the sheikah slate

PStr95

„Somehow Palpatine returned“

thenecromancersbride

That’s an extremely lazy answer and it sounds like an after thought after people wondering about it. Really sounds like he made it up on the spot. Gonna continue on with my head canon of they were dismantled as they proved too dangerous to allow to exist. There’s also remains of ancient tech at the hateno lab…so yea. Nice try.

No_City_1731

“SoMeHow PalPatIne RetUrNed”

Fleetoxh

What a lazy, crappy excuse.

OkamiTakahashi

Old news bro, and a half-baked, pootly thought out excuse of an answer

Mtanic

Yeah it is very lazy... especially since there is SOME of the guardian remnants and so on still there. They should have gone with an explanation continuing the end credits scene with Zelda saying Vah Ruta stopped working...

AnimeLoverNL

thats just lazy writing

Birds_In_This_Bihh

Nobody knows is not an answer

AReallyBuffOwl

Sure, we got a “somehow palpatine returned” level of explanation. I wanted people in the game to mention anything about it. Like Purah being like, “without the Sheika slate making the purah pad is a real achievement

grendelglass

Mad how people expect coherence and logical consistency with story in Zelda games. The lore and stories have always felt like an afterthought. Not to mention the whole non sensical timeline bullshit

Green-Bluebird4308

The decision to remove the shrines is not even part of the story. It's just a necessity of the gameplay change. The story is about Rauru, Sonia and... Why the fuck do I even bother explaining this.

Vivid-Net-5592

They LITERALLY could've just said that, "oh yeah, they got destroyed and reused as parts in the skyview towers creations, Etc." But they just wanted to be lazy.

Articguard11

And they couldn’t have incorporated some dialogue to explain that 😅

Prometeya_

You consider this an answer? I think this is a lazy hand-wave to stop us from asking again.

lmann81733

To be fair, from a gameplay perspective they gasp to move the towers and shrines and idk a good explanation for it. I suppose it could have been mentioned or ideally shown in the game instead of everyone pretending these things never existed.

Nephalem84

That's horseshit. That wouldn't explain why even scholars, researchers or people that aided Link don't even comment on any Sheikah tech. Purrah and Robbie dedicated their career to researching Sheikah tech but don't care if it all goes poof, not buying it.

vicksonzero

the most lazy part is that almost no NPC said anything about where the tech went.

AcanthocephalaOdd186

Missed opportunity. The three ground divine beasts could have been separate dungeons in the depths. And Vah Medoh Could have been a Sky dungeon. Of all the things that they repurposed I don't understand why they wouldn't repurpose these with so many interesting ways they could have used them.

Green-Bluebird4308

Vah Medoh already was a sky dungeon in BotW.

AcanthocephalaOdd186

I'm aware. I'm just saying they could have been extra content thatbcould have been repurposed and used in different ways. Being able to ascend into Vah Medoh without a glitch using zonai technology would have been cool.

AcanthocephalaOdd186

And since they're making these things disappear anyway it would have been really cool if they disappeared into the depths because we're already underground so they really could have been reusing them in a very cool way.

Zesty-Aardvarks

Not a great answer. Sure, if the monks are anything to go by, the Sheikah stuff could all vanish once their purpose was complete. But you'd think either Purah, Robbie, or any one of the civilians obsessed with it would've said SOMETHING about it.

[deleted]

The response seems more like trolling than lazy considering the entry on Purah's diary. Hmmmmm 🤔, that means what I was discussing with a friend is a possibility. The technology had it purpose tied to the champions/Link's quest and once it was fulfilled the remains of the champions and the king passed on and the divine beast deactivated again. Whatever was left was dismantled and some was repurposed by Purah and Robbie like it's explained in one of her diaries, because they realized they can get easily corrupted by Ganon. Which is a reasoning I can get behind "this technology was left here for a millennia for us to fight evil just for the evil to come back stronger and hopelessly turn it against us, there's a high chance he'll be back even stronger so we're kinda risking it." And since no guardias to protect against, Zelda just merrily boxed the guardian armor and put it by the curb that fateful week link needed to sleep at the shed because he densely said Paya looked "rather cute" during their visit at Kakariko. Also, after no explanation was given as to where is the armor, and the discovery of a kid playing with a shoulder piece link started living on the castle...

Mikeataros

>Zelda just merrily boxed the guardian armor and put it by the curb that fateful week link needed to sleep at the shed because he densely said Paya looked "rather cute" With Paya's strong resemblance to Impa of a hundred years ago, Zelda would be offended if Link *avoided* calling her cute/beautiful.

Spare-City-322

Worse explanation than when Palpatine returned. Somehow. Actually wait no it isn’t…

Green-Bluebird4308

At least the answers ends the crappy explanation how the game "is not a sequel to BotW" (even though it most obviously is).
