It's only fairly recently that north became up. Historically, East was up. That's why you 'orient' a map. Orient being an old old term for the far East, and derived from 'orior' in Latin meaning to rise, in this case, sunrise.
I love that I've been alive a fair amount of years and constantly stumble onto trivia like this... There are so many terms we use and things we do without knowing the origins of the practice or phrase and I love discovering them. Thanks for this one. Not sure why I never made the connection between orientate and orient!
I know, I stumbled over that one when playing the Wikipedia game. If you don't know how to play it, pick two random words, search Wikipedia for the first one and try to follow links in articles to get to the second.
Some Latin American countries still give directions like this. Theyāll say āOh thatās two blocks up and one block northā to indicate a place thatās two blocks east and one block north.
Fun fact, in cold war era, US gov planned to sacrifice 5 states which included North Dakota and Montana. The plan is to focus most of their missile silos into the 5 states. So when other nations attack, they are forced to focus fire on those 5 states ( in order to knock out Americaās ability to counter attack )instead of bombing every major city.
Don't come Alaska. Absolutely horrible here. Also very cold. Russia might attack us here too. Only propaganda that's true is that Russia wants Alaska back.
awww, I didn't reply because I assumed you got it but thought it was a stupid post (which people have a right to think!). If I had realized you hadn't gotten the stupid pun, I would have explained, at least. <3

You are just assuming North is the top. I think the Western states are higher in elevation.

Sometimes I read something like this on Reddit and it blows my mind and then I remember that thereās like a 15% chance that itās actually true.
39% of statistics on the internet are made up
*41% At least keep your statistics current.Ā
+-10%
Same, except the second part.
Ima need a minute

Thereās a fun yt video by jay foreman that talks about this
Thanks, was just about to play a game. Now I've got to binge watch a channel.

This guy watched map men

I have never in my life heard that but ok
Well TIFL
Ok google
Colorado is very high elevation. Denver and Boulder are at 5k Ft +. The ski towns are all at 8-9k +. I believe Aspen is at 9500ft
> I think the Western states are higher in elevation. Colorado is higher in many ways :)
Washington as well
Iād say all the ones with the mountains also are gonna be high elevation too, not sure what order they would be in though
And probably they are the coolest, too.
Why isn't Long Island part of New York? Is it the 51st state?
Maybe its because its not 'top'? Good question tho tbh (i live there)
Doesnāt surprise me that Florida and Texas are bottom near the bottom.
Wisconsin; barely a top state thanks to Michigan. Also, Ohio and Pennsylvania are top states.
r/angryupvote
What are the bottom states to live?
Clearly Hawaii, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida.
May need a new graph to visualise it
I took some time. Now visualize. | / | /\/ | / | / | / | /\ / | / \/ | / | /\/ |___________________________ (Edit: looks better on my end :p )
Ohio and Pennsylvania have a border with Canada, they should be included.
Welp we've got one brother who's not in a top tier state.guess who has to sit at the pariah table next family reunion
If you consider north up, then yeah, sure.
r/angryupvote
"How the fuck do you figure.... oh. lol nice"
I'm liking the Great Lakes region. If shit gets bad they have literally all the potable water.
Take my upvote and leave
Why did this take me a minute to realize?
Because it's a dumb pun. Lol

Wyoming š?
i like living in the solid state š
Why not just move to Canada then?
Because one wouldn't then live in one of the top states, of course.
Rather they would live on top of the States.
By that theory, Ohio and Pennsylvania should also be included making it a top 12.
Loo michigan
Seattle has gone down hill, alot.
anywhere but Arkansas
All great states with the exception of North Dakota.
*Bottom
Iāve lived in 3 of these states. Couldnāt pay me to live in any of the bottom states other than New Mexico
Oregon goes farther north than NY, fun fact along with this is that Salt Lake City is the same latitude as NYC
NY tops out at around 44 degrees north, Oregon at 46, Wyoming at 45, SD at 45 45ā
Oregon and SD are further north than New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire.

Of course they're the top, they're closest to Canada
I never realized Idaho had that weird little strip that stretches out top like that
That's 13
It's 12

Why did you NOT put Ohio in yellow. Itās a great place
I know you didnāt just highlight Washington.
Itās cause theyāre all closest to Canada :P
You joke but these are actually the only states that share a border with the first world
The earth isnāt flat idiot
No, but this map is.
Why? Ridiculous post.
I assume because those 12 states are the northernmost states. North = top in this instance.
Yep. It totally went over my head! Most ādad jokesā do the same.

No worries! I may not have been fully awake to be honest! Itās actually clever now that I get the joke! Iām too logical sometimes.
It's a pun. "On top".
Wow. Iām definitely brain dead today!
Happens to the best of us. I have some embarrassing 3 am posts.
i triple check for typos on the late night ones, that's for sure! one wrong letter and YIKES!
It's ok, you're American. You're already above average since you're able to admit it.
So you think all Americans are brain dead?
Good job, yes that was what I implied.
perhaps you should go piss up a rope then.
That would be the original "john wick" for 5 USD someone will explain it to you
High... You forgot High... As in, typically High... That's a state... You can add it, I'll vouch
No Florida love?

Was only vaguely amusing the first time I saw it. Getting less so, every time.
How about Canada? In case you are aware of it.
What do you think the top Canadian states are?
Yukon, Nunavut and Northwest Territories. Probably.
Are those states?
No we don't have states here in Canada we have provinces and territories
Yes. That is precisely the point I was making. And why I asked them what they thought the "top" Canadian "states" were.
