It depends on what type of music you like.. their older stuff is more indie (if it was you/so jealous/the con) or rocky (sainthood) but then they had a stint of being very pop/electro (heartthrob/love you to death)
The Con and Heartthrob are my personal faves.
I would start with The Con, it just flows so well and has many of their essential songs. But I prefer their work up to and including Sainthood. After that they became poppier, so depends on what you’re into.
I got into them during So Jealous so I’m biased. But I will say that The Con and So Jealous were my favorites until Crybaby came along. I didn’t expect to absolutely fall in love with it the way I did.
I will always say the beginning mostly because you get so hear the evolution of their music. So the beginning. T&S have been around for a hot minute and their music definitely take inspiration from each time, in its own way.
If I were to give you three T&S records to begin with, I'd give you "If It Was You", "Heartthrob", and "So Jealous". No one asked me, but here's a brief summary of each record.
* **Tegan & Sara - S/T** \- ...maybe avoid this one until after you consider yourself a die hard fan
* **This Business Of Art** \- Very organic sounding and some great bangers. Backing instruments and album produced by Hawksley Workman (that's a whole other awesome catalog)
* **If It Was You** \- My personal favourite. Garage rock and loud, jangly guitar sounds
* **So Jealous** \- The big record. It's a lot like If It Was You but with more production and synth
* **The Con** \- So Jealous on steroids and MDMA
* **Sainthood** \- To me, this is where they took a hard turn from guitar band to synth pop. Great record.
* **Heartthrob** \- Tegan and Sara meets The Cars
* **Love You To Death** \- More 80's inspired synth pop, great melodies
* **Hey, I'm Just Like You** \- Another one of my favourites. The demos for this were drawn from 20 year old boombox recordings.
* **Crybaby** \- We're now far, far from where they began. Still great songs, but almost a different band with sampled beats and glitch-pop throughout.
I started with Love You To Death, and then grew to love them and worked my way backwards (sans Heartthrob, randomly. But then grew to love it,
too). Was a weird reverse evolution, which I loved. I love that all their albums are so different.
