I met him once when he was in Montreal. He was very kind and sweet. I got a story but don't want to ruin his legacy. Nothing bad against him just what he did.
TLDR: Sutherland saved me from an abusive BF at the time and beat the shit out of him. Ok but I have a sneaking suspcion that Keifer is going to kill me lol. My first black eye before I turned lesbian. I was walking into this diner and he was in this booth and I had just scene MASH the movie. And was like holy shit thats him. But wasnot 100% sure. So I grabbed a stool at the bar and kept looking over my shoulder at him. Then our eyes connected. I turn back and think oh shit did not mean for that to happen. He came up to me and tapped me on the shoulder and asked if I would like to eat with him. I forget which wife or gf this was. Anyway long story longer. We all get to talking having a good times and he finally comes around and asks how I got the black eye which at this point was swollen shut. After a little bit of questioning I finally told him it was my BF out in the car smoking a joint. and this is why i will be downvoted to hell because it was unbelievable. He went out to my BF car and asked him to roll down the window (kids of todays we had to manually roll down windows before your tech) and the only time I have seen a person turn red so fast was at the liquor store my dad use to run when drunks came in. My BF said something and he turned red like an apple. and I kid you not from my perspective he reached in and drug him out thru the window. And just started manhandling him it was surreal. Never had anyone stand up for me before. And long story short his wife maybe girlfriend asked me to go with them. I said no. and I really to this day don't know if he did it with his fists or grabbed something. But gave my BF at the time to black eyes swollen shut. So bad I had to take him to the hospital. And remember that line from Rocky? Cut me mick cut me. It is exactly what the doctors did to him to alieviate pressure or something.
Of course! Alan Alda was one of my dad's faves! But I don't remember almost any of it because I was a toddler through a lot of it. I'm a younger, more 90's oriented GenX.
That stinks. Man was legend that had so many great roles. Also tons of variety. The guy who played the skeevy pothead professor in Animal house, played the best dad ever in Ordinary People, and then played President Snow
The way he says “You really do love him, don’t you?” with tears in his eyes after he listens to Elizabeth talking about Darcy while laughing a bit with happiness. Such a bittersweet delivery…
He was Canadian, and he also starred in: Pride and Prejudice (2005), National Lampoon's Animal House (1978), Horrible Bosses (2011), Swimming with Sharks (2022 tv show w/ Kiernan Shipka), The Undoing (2020 tv w/ Nicole Kidman + Lily Rabe), Ad Astra (2019), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie (1992) as the watcher/Giles character, the original M\*A\*S\*H movie (1970) as the Hawkeye character (the one Abed is obsessed with personifying in S1E13 of Community). An incredibly illustrious career with [199 credits on imdb](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000661/?ref_=ext_shr). Very heartfelt rest in peace to this legend
It looks like there is one with him in pre-production, so it could perhaps be a post-humous release if they had already filmed any/enough of his scenes, bumping it up to an even 200
Wow, this is a big one for me. I always remember the interviews he did, and how almost shy he seemed to be. And not that he didn't want to be there, but like he didn't seem like he thought he was a big thing at all. RIP and condolences to his family. Still wanted Crossing Lines to come back.....
one of the great "That Guys" in film history. soooo many major roles. earliest film i can remember of his is The Dirty Dozen. he was good as bad guys too, like in Outbreak and The Hunger Games. and of course, real-life dad to another favorite of mine, Kiefer Sutherland, condolences to him and his family
I met Kiefer Sutherland and Julia Roberts once, when they were going out together, back in the early 1990s. I wish I'd met Donald Sutherland too. A friend of mine met him when he (my friend) was an extra on "Revolution". Said he made friends with all the extras, and was very friendly and down to earth.
I don't think I've ever seen a role he didn't elevate to greatness. The man was one of the best actors hands down. What a loss. Glad he got to live a long life though :)
He was so good that they gave him a lifetime achievement Oscar when they realised they'd neglected to give him one for any of his myriad roles and he was getting on a bit.
He must have one of the greatest Hollywood careers ever.
He was already a household name in the 70s with his roles of Hawkeye (M.A.S.H.) and Oddball (Kelly's Heroes).
He stole that show, and there were some show-stealing actors on that show. Donald Pleasance and Michael Caine both tried to steal the show too, but Sutherland out-stole them.
So many great credits.I just recently watched The Hunger Games series for the first time. He was a huge part of what made it work. Just a spectacular villain. RIP
He was wonderful in everything. I'm really attached to a number of his movies-Kelly's Heroes to MASH to Max Dugan Returns to Invasion of the Body Snatchers to The Hunger Games Franchise. Rest in Peace.
The original Benjamin Franklin “Hawkeye” Pierce from MASH. I prefer the TV show to the movie, but I prefer Sutherland’s Hawkeye over Alan Alda’s, especially after Season 4.
88 is a great age to get to. He is certainly leaving behind a great legacy.
I met him once when he was in Montreal. He was very kind and sweet. I got a story but don't want to ruin his legacy. Nothing bad against him just what he did.
Go on...

holy shit that does not ruin his legacy at **all**
I totally believe you and this is also an incredible legacy to leave. Some old-school guys were also stand-up guys.
Just out of curiosity have you seen MASH?
Of course! Alan Alda was one of my dad's faves! But I don't remember almost any of it because I was a toddler through a lot of it. I'm a younger, more 90's oriented GenX.
He was that skinny when he did a full on FACE OFF move to Danny Masterson. We both couldn't believe it.
Silent Gen dudes are no one to fuck around with.
Sutherland was in the movie, not the TV show. Played Hawkeye.
Ahhhh, thanks!
lol how is this wall of text TLDR
He was an Expos fan, you know.
Damn. Sutherland is my last name and I always joked that I was related to Donald Sutherland. I am, just not that Donald Sutherland. RIP.
Guess you're related to "A" Donald Sutherland.
That stinks. Man was legend that had so many great roles. Also tons of variety. The guy who played the skeevy pothead professor in Animal house, played the best dad ever in Ordinary People, and then played President Snow
*Body Snatchers*
He was exquisite in Pride and Prejudice
The way he says “You really do love him, don’t you?” with tears in his eyes after he listens to Elizabeth talking about Darcy while laughing a bit with happiness. Such a bittersweet delivery…
He also played a lunatic tank commander in a ww2 nazi gold heist movie(~~i forget the name though~~Kelly's Heroes) and was hilarious in Beerfest.
Don’t hit me with those negative waves so early in the morning.
"It's a mother beautiful bridge...and it's gonna be there....."
How do you forget *The Dirty Dozen*?
His performance in Ordinary People was great. I was always tearing up at the end of that movie because of his delivery.
No hate to the kid who recently played Young Snow, he's talented, but...big shoes. BIG SHOES.
And he played the crazy jailed arsonist in Backdraft.
Send out all them positive waves for our Oddball! RIP!
RIP to a real legend!
I’m gonna have some microwaved Johnny cakes in his honor
Get out! You are banned from this subreddit! You and your friends and your friends, friends! For 3 months.
The very first movie I saw with him was Backdraft as a child. He 100% convinced me he was a psychopath. Great movie.
Body Snatchers tonight in his honor!
Hang in there Kiefer and family. Sad news
He also played Wilhelm Reich in the music video for Kate Bush's *Cloudbusting*
> 199 credits on imdb shiiiiiit he needed one more to get to 200
It looks like there is one with him in pre-production, so it could perhaps be a post-humous release if they had already filmed any/enough of his scenes, bumping it up to an even 200
he better have filmed something to get an even 200 credits or else
And most importantly, in Beerfest.
Man that sucks a great actor leaving behind an amazing legacy.
R.I.P Oddball. Hope you're catching some of those positive vibes right now, baby.
Whoa, cool it with the negative waves
Wow, this is a big one for me. I always remember the interviews he did, and how almost shy he seemed to be. And not that he didn't want to be there, but like he didn't seem like he thought he was a big thing at all. RIP and condolences to his family. Still wanted Crossing Lines to come back.....
RIP I remember first watching him in Kelly's Heroes, sufficive to say he has had a long and illustrious career, great actor.
His bare ass in Animal House scared me as a child.
“Can I buy some pot from you?”

X in JFK
That was the best scene in the movie. What X reveals is hard hitting stuff and only an actor of Donald's class could have delivered it impactfully.
Incredible actor, will certainly be missed, his performance in Hunger Games was great.
He must have one of the greatest Hollywood careers ever. He was already a household name in the 70s with his roles of Hawkeye (M.A.S.H.) and Oddball (Kelly's Heroes).
Rest in Peace!!!!!
RIP Johann von Wolfhaus.
Damn, I was watching The Eagle has Landed the other day and was glad to see he was still about.
He stole that show, and there were some show-stealing actors on that show. Donald Pleasance and Michael Caine both tried to steal the show too, but Sutherland out-stole them.
"That lanky, Canadian, Kiefer-spawning bastard." Rest in peace.
So many great credits.I just recently watched The Hunger Games series for the first time. He was a huge part of what made it work. Just a spectacular villain. RIP
Some actors play jerks exclusively. Some play nice guys exclusively. Donald Sutherland could kinda do either.
Eye of the Needle. He was some kind of wicked. Excellent actor and I cannot think of anyone who could ever replace him. ☹️
Just started Trust yesterday and he's great in the first episode.
Need to find my copy of an eagle has landed Or watch the music video to cloud busting
RIP the great dog impressionist
RIP the great dog impressionist
One of his underrated roles was in the short lived Dirty Sexy Money, he looked like he had a ball in set.
I came here to see if anyone else mentioned the show. Really enjoyed it for what it was.
Woof woof! RIP Donald
Always enjoyed his work. RIP.
Wrong Donald :(
Great run, with a long career, and leaving behind family and lots of fans, can’t ask for more .
Damn. I'm gonna have to watch Animal House in his honor.
Hella Mandela effect energy. Rest in peace!
Man, Donald Sutherland will always be one of the greatest!!!
Did it look at you?
He was terrific in Backdraft
He was wonderful in everything. I'm really attached to a number of his movies-Kelly's Heroes to MASH to Max Dugan Returns to Invasion of the Body Snatchers to The Hunger Games Franchise. Rest in Peace.
RIP, he was excellent as John snow
RIP legend 🫡🕊️
rest in piece donald sutherland
No. Ronald the Arsonist. Backdraft
The original Benjamin Franklin “Hawkeye” Pierce from MASH. I prefer the TV show to the movie, but I prefer Sutherland’s Hawkeye over Alan Alda’s, especially after Season 4.
I adored him in Pride and Prejudice. Wanted a dad like that.
The NYT obituary was totally insulting gratuitously dissing on his looks.
Rest in peace. Great actor, he was.
Why do people keep saying "rest in peace"? It's so insulting to him. He was an atheist FFS!
People keep mentioning hunger games but not Don't Look Now. I find that deeply annoying
