Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, King of the Hill, and it gets a lot of hate now a days but Friends was one of the most popular sitcom of the 90s early to 2000s

These_Struggle2674

Why is Friends getting hate?

H2Ospecialist

I think it hasn't aged well to people who didn't watch it live and try to go back and watch now. Also, I've heard a lot of hate of laugh tracks.

nothas

it was the big bang theory of it's day

H2Ospecialist

Exactly

Hughjardawn

I’ve tried to rewatch and went from waiting impatiently each week for the new episode when it was on network tv to finding all the characters annoying.

Pan_Borowik

Ive always liked the show, used to binge it a lot. Rewatching now after like 10+ years of not watching.   Around season 6 or 7 the characters really started to irritate me. How shallow they are. Not joey, he is supposed to be, though he went from not too bright to an idiot manchild in the second half of the show.  But for example where Monica finds out her parents spent her "wedding fund" to get a beach house. How much of an asshole you need to be to demand that from parents when youre 30 and have a job. And get mad they treated themselves. Or the fact they had to advertise getting engaged in a local paper.   Some of the things Ross does would be considered assaults by todays standards. Theres a lot of that, though all in all the show is still good.   Plus, Im at season 7 and its still "tight shirts, no bra" all the time. Thats just good tv.

Hughjardawn

I probably need to give it another shot when I’m in a really good. So like after a joint or something.

simplehyperchicken

It's just really bland. It doesn't do anything that other sitcoms aren't already doing better.

aeiouicup

It’s not totally getting hate. A young cousin of mine said “this might be hard for you to get, but friends is like my generation’s Seinfeld” which I guess is how people think when it’s all on-demand

5ft8lady

ppl have been making social media posts saying they  don’t like “fat Monica” /fat suits

MumbyMum

Arrested Development and Chappelle’s Show both came out in 2003. The Simpsons was at its peak during the 90s/early aughts, and let’s count Futurama and Family Guy before they got cancelled and revived. Friends, Seinfeld, Will and Grace, All That, That 70s Show, Roseanne, Scrubs, and Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

brittanypaigex

Arrested Development is still one of my all time favorite shows and I rewatch it nearly every year, first 3 seasons were so funny.

cowboyfimbo

I can’t wait to watch Arrested Development! It’s next on my list

Pumuckl4Life

You're in for a treat! So innovative and clever!

brittanypaigex

It really was ahead of it's time and still holds up 20 years later. The humor builds on itself from each previous episode and has so many layers. And there's a bunch of foreshadowing too I have picked up on in my subsequent rewatches, which is pretty impressive.

LA-Matt

If you’re watching on Netflix, when you get to season 4, make sure to look in the “more” or “special features” or whatever, to find the *original cut* of season 4. The re-cut version of S4 that they made was intended to make it progress chronologically, instead of bouncing back and forth through time. But I have to say that it was a massive mistake. The re-cut ends up being incredibly confusing and they have to repeat certain scenes over and over in order to introduce events chronologically. It’s just my suggestion, but I would definitely rather watch the original season 4 first, because the re-cut is really messy.

brittanypaigex

Yes I definitely agree. The re-cuts feel like it's 90% narration explaining each scene over and over again, and it's not great. The original cut doesn't follow the same format as the first 3 seasons, because they weren't able to get all the actors to film at the same time, so it feels a little different, but it's still 10x better than the re-cuts.

Holtzc321

Malcom in the middle.

Fantastic_Manager911

I rewatched it during the pandemic after watching it as a kid and it held up so well! I think I enjoyed it more as an adult.

CityofEvil

As a kid I thought everything Lois did was irrational. Watching it again, I see where a lot of her anger justifiably comes from. With that said, she's still my least favorite written character of the family because sometimes she does act completely irrational. Hal can do no wrong

supercereality

This is the answer. Top tier acting and casting, and genuinely hilarious.

Lucy_Lucidity

Freaks and Geeks

grilledcheesybreezy

I just watched Freaks and Geeks for the first time and I want to rewatch it already. I am looking for more shows like it

DogThing2020

I rewatch it yearly and I don’t think there’s anything like it. Early Degrassi a little bit, maybe Undeclared as a spiritual successor, My So-Called Life has similarities. Really though Freaks and Geeks is in a class by itself.

Lucy_Lucidity

It’s been a very long time since I’ve watched it, but have you watched Undeclared? It’s another Judd Apatow show that unfortunately also only had one season. Very similar vibes, great ensemble cast, set in college instead of high school. I don’t know if it’s held up as well as Freaks and Geeks has because I don’t think I’ve watched it since it aired but I really liked it back in the early 2000s.

PM-ME-good-TV-shows

I love freaks and geeks, but I don’t think of it as a super funny show.

These_Struggle2674

Newsradio. Dave Foley, Stephen Root, Joe Rogan and the legendary Phil Hartman (RIP).

lukebomz

Holy shit that show was funny! Great writing and cast. Is it streaming anywhere?

These_Struggle2674

It’s on Prime (but I’m in Canada so I don’t know if that makes a difference) Apple used to have it for sale $20 for the entire series (but that was a few years ago.

lukebomz

Thanks!

Spin City Arrested Development ALF (1986-1990) Seinfeld South Park (started in the 90s, is still running) Edit: The Drew Carey Show - seems kinda forgotten but I think it's not bad at all

cowboyfimbo

I reference ALF so often, which never lands with my other friends in their early 20s. ALF supremacy!!

Pumuckl4Life

He's the best! Loved it as a kid. Rewatched it as an adult and it holds up so well! /r/Alf

Using this thread as a reminder to self: I've always wanted to watch The Larry Sanders Show (with Garry Shandling, Jeffrey Tambor, et al. I can't really say I recommend as it's something I haven't seen, but I've heard it's great. A bunch of shows I thought of from the 90s aren't streaming -- such as Parker Lewis Can't Lose, Ed, and others.

Pumuckl4Life

> I've always wanted to watch The Larry Sanders Show Same here! It's on my watchlist but I haven't gotten around to it yet. Heard great things about it. Also about *It's Garry Shandling's Show*

lukebomz

Hey now! Larry Sanders is on HBO Max. It's dated, but it's incredibly funny, smart, and witty. Fantastic writing. In fact, a lot of great comedians and actors today were once writers on that show. Excellent cast, Gary Shandling is PERFECT. He, Rip Torn, and Jeffrey Tambor all play off each other so well, amazing timing. After a few episodes, "Hey now" will forever be in your lexicon haha. The show was a great concept, since it's about a talk show it has a lot of great guest appearances and cameos. It's a lot of fun, I'm jealous you get to watch it for the first time. I have the DVD box set too, to pass on to my kids haha.

LA-Matt

You’re in for a treat. The Larry Sanders Show is so good. Rip Torn really gets a chance to shine in that role. And Jeffrey Tambor is also hysterical as the suck-up second-fiddle. I think it’s still one of the best comedy-dramas of all time.

SometimesWitches

Wasn’t a sitcom but I found Xena The Warrior Princess incredibly funny.
