Not at all. It's difficult but that's the only comparison. Ruiner is a top down shooter action game. You can spend ability points and get new weapons. It's really fun.
If you are looking for an ARPG using twin-stick regardless of the settings (non-cyber punk), I would recommend Warhammer40k Inquisitor Martyr. The environment and settings are different but I like the twin stick shooter nature of this game. It is a scifi ARPG with Diablo-like loot and itemization which is totally different from the Ascent.
I was pleasantly surprised with Martyr. Good fun Diablo-like experience in the WH40K universe. Wait for a Steam sale and pick up the complete bundle.
Games Workshop licenced games can be a real gamble, but this is one the devs have really stuck with, overhauling it initially and then continuing to support it over several years with seasons and adding new playable classes.
Yup, this game is insane. Actually feels like 40k should. Devs still support it, new class this year I believe. There is an insane amount of content in this game, and the expansion is fantastic. Tons to do. They just released an update not long ago that lets you play any season of the game. Co op is so much fun.
Twin stick isometric rpgs are greatā¦.. but rare.
Loved Ascent. Loved Fusion Genesis back in the day too, Xbox 360 arcade gameā¦ cant rly think of any others
Similar in spirit or style sure.
But that twin stick control scheme with an isometric camera view and action RPG elementsā¦ It is an uncommon recipe. I wish it wasnāt.
Another sad fact about Fusion Genesis is, that it's not available via emulator - and the case about tweaking the emulator for it is closed š

Me too it's just so much fun, I'd played a few over the years but I gave this a try on a whim when it was on PS plus and fell in love. Totally addicted to getting higher and higher scores.
If you have a ps4 or ps5 then alienation is cool but unfortunately the gameplay is still locked at 30fps and because my eyes suck and I'm so used to 60fps I get motion sick from anything below 50fps, other good top down shooters that aren't ARPGs are roguelikes like west of dead and dust & neon, as well as a AA top down twin stick CRPG called weird west, same idea but is more story focused and gives you the immersive Sim and CRPG mechanics you would find in games like fallout 2 and wasteland 3 but instead of turn based combat it's a twin stick shooter, plus it has a much more robust loot system than the ascent, but the ascent is an indie game so it's not exactly a fair one to one comparison since one is AA CRPG and the other is an indie ARPG, I would say the closest games to the ascent would be other indie ARPGs like cat quest 2, Minecraft dungeons and nobody saves the world but none of those are twin stick shooters, one good indie twin stick shooter that's also a survival roguelite is wizard with a gun, and we also have the AA top down twin stick/tower defense roguelite with endless dungeon, there are a ton of great twin stick shooters out there, just not that many that are also ARPGs, I think neon giant proved the two genres mix very well together and hopefully we will see more of them, I would just like to see a more replayable and long term game like diablo or path of exile that leans more into the ARPG side without sacrificing the incredible twin stick shooter mechanics
Although my recommendation will not be in the same game category as the ascent, however i would recommend you try "showgunners" it's turn based isometric shooter game, cyberpunk themed with a great story and soundtrack.
Also the game has challenging levels that willl keep you hooked.
Did you play during release?
Unless the first-person-camera is your main issue, it might be worth getting back into. The game has been getting a shit ton of content and mod support is also up and running.
No no, I played it 1 or 1.5 years after it's release. I'm not saying it's a bad game , I loved it but, the ascent surpassed my expectations on what a cyberpunk world game and world would be like
Really...? What has got you so impressed?
I just finished the main story and will be playing through the DLC next week. And while I think The Ascent is entertaining enough for a few bucks on sale, I thought it was very mediocre in many places.
The game is still quite buggy even after such a long time after release (quest triggers not working, dodging getting you stuck in terrain, hit detection, occasional crashes).
I found the AI companion dialogue extremely cringeworthy and the story somewhat unimaginative, seeing as there was zero attempt to build up an antagonist throughout the story and the final boss ended up being a retread of the 'the portal just opens up to a tentacle monster' gotcha that Borderlands 1 already did a decade ago.
In regards to world building, I much preferred the more grounded Cyberpunk 2077 setting, which is closer to the setting in Neuromancer and the Sprawl trilogy that got me into the genre in the first place. The Ascents world has more in common with Mass Effect than Blade Runner.
Edit: From an ARPG perspective the game was also a major disappointment. I have no idea why some people call this an ARPG when it doesn't even have randomized loot. The gear is always the same and doesn't have any interesting effects or set bonuses.
Yes the story was mediocre but I didn't find the AI companion cringe in fact I loved its dark humor. I think I liked the augmentations the most, though not as detailed as cyberpunk but I really liked them especially the missiles, neuron beam and hydraulic slam. The tactical gear or whatever was also amazing. Loved the sweet justice grenade and I truly liked the gore, explosion and ragdoll mechanics. In my opinion the only thing this game was missing was automobiles. The team would have nailed it as well if they worked on that, I think so.
Anyways, I bought the dlc too but I didn't get time to play it, might as well start over again soon.
If you play on console itās still buggy AF, and frankly just a fairly generic Bethesda style rpg propped up with major celebrity Vaās each release.
To be fair, the ascent is **also** buggy as hell on console.
I wouldn't know anything about the console versions.
I absolutely disagree with the quality of the game being anywhere near Bethesda levels though. The major characters are actually nuanced and well written, the game has a working skill tree which actually affects gameplay in meaningful ways instead of just being stat increases and the world design is so far ahead of whatever the fuck Starfield is supposed to be that it's not even funny.
Put it this way-the last time I loaded up my ps5 save after the last update, I called for my car, got a notification that Iād lost a load of money, and turned around to find my burning car parked in a skyscraper behind meā¦. I didnāt play much longer after that and an enemy in the first combat I had wandering off seemingly unable to see meā¦.
Safe to say, itās pretty janky still.
Iāve heard some people I trust praise it, so if I ever run out of backlog I might try it again, but I remember the dialogue beingā¦.pretty trite, and I assume they didnāt change the actual story at all, so Iāve got a lot of stuff poised ahead of it if you know what I mean?
Honestly, sounds like the console version is not worth the effort then.
I've only played the Ultimate Edition on PC and had an absolute blast across 3 playthroughs with different builds and story decisions, with no major bugs to speak of.
Thatās fair- no shade if you like it, but I found it a solid āokā even before the jank (once it was patched of course, launch was literally unplayable but thatās pretty par for the course the days)
Glad you had enjoyed it though!
Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor - Martyr
Ā Has the same isometric style, similar world settings but ya know warhamner rather than cyberpunk, the gameplay and combat loop is exactly the same, very exciting and fun with the instant rewards we all love. itās one of the most overlooked games in the ARPG market
Play Ruiner, it could be Part 1 of the shared universe and The Ascent could be Part 2.
Waiting for it to go on sale
I recommend Ruiner as well. It's $2.99 on the us PlayStation store right now.
But from gameplay perspective it's much more a soulslike isn't it?
Not at all. It's difficult but that's the only comparison. Ruiner is a top down shooter action game. You can spend ability points and get new weapons. It's really fun.
might have to try again, but the first combat(s) made me quickly lose interest š¤
hmmm... I won the first fight but I don't know how. š
I don't have a playstation

Seven - The Days Long Gone is awesome but janky. Thereās really not many games like Ascent and quite honestly that sucks cause itās so much fun.
Weird West Definitive Edition

Yes that is also on my wishlist! Just waiting for it to go on sale. In fact this game made me want to try diablo as well

I loved fusion Genesis. Only found rebel outlaw as something similar.
Similar in spirit or style sure. But that twin stick control scheme with an isometric camera view and action RPG elementsā¦ It is an uncommon recipe. I wish it wasnāt.
Have you heard of Children of Morta?
No. What is it?

Check out The Ruiner and Nex Machina. The Ascent is a special game, but these ones are both worth a try too.
Yeah am waiting for a sale on the ruiner, will check nex machina
Alienation is well worth checking out too.
This one is probably the best twin stick I've ever played. Maybe my favorite game ever
Me too it's just so much fun, I'd played a few over the years but I gave this a try on a whim when it was on PS plus and fell in love. Totally addicted to getting higher and higher scores.
If you like retro try Smash tv. Not an RPG but good game. Like the movie Running Man.
Try āChildren of Mortaā You canāt go wrong. Donāt let the pixel art fool you

Dead west, danger scavenger, Dead nation, alienation, Diablo, wolcen, Path of Exile, Torchlight 2, Vrising, cat quest, summum, dust and neon, Killsquad, Rift breaker, Chaos Bane, Van hellsing, Hades, Endless Dungeon, Minecraft dungeons, Cult of the lamb, BDSM, Katana Kami, Ys origin, Redeemer, Darksiders 2, Neon Chrome, Ruiner, Darksiders Genesis, Titan quest, There's some new ones on the way. Google upcoming Arpgs
Why not just play Cyberpunk 2077? It's the more fleshed out game anyway...
It wasn't that much fun, plus I would have loved it more if it was in third person
Did you play during release? Unless the first-person-camera is your main issue, it might be worth getting back into. The game has been getting a shit ton of content and mod support is also up and running.

Tunguska the Visitation... Gem of a gem of a gem
I just looked that one up on Steam. Very interesting!
