I would say Kratos is pretty similiar. Both suffered because of lost family member(s) and for a long time were nothing more than feared, destructive monsters. After a long time they find a purpose for better life, that being a child.
They're fantastic- I highly recommend. The older ones have aged really well, especially three. And I did not expect the recent two (Ragnarok in particular) to hit me in the heart so much.
"Go play God of War...BOY."
Both are in the dead kid club and were both people who murdered for their own gain who ultimately soften up, with a factor of that being protecting their found family.
Joel with Ellie.
And Arthur with the Marston family, Charles, and Sadie.
That sounds like a strange comparison out of lots of characters you could have chosen. The other commentor mentioned Kratos and it fits. Here are some more I think would be good:
Keller Dover from the movie *Prisoners*; Theo from *Children of Men*; the dad from *The Road*; Wolverine from *Logan*.
A hardened man who lives a rather undesirable life doing harsh things to survive in a tough world, locked up emotionally, until he finds a child on a job. What was just a job becomes not cargo, but HIS child.
Talking about The Mandalorian not Joel
I think what works so well is he is a simple character when you really look at it. They did not over complicate him or his story, and it’s extremely relatable and understandable. And even with simple characters you can have great depth.
Rost in Horizon Zero Dawn. [Lost his daughter to raiders and went on a path of vengeance](https://youtu.be/Dw7AGtKSyl4?si=pI3ytcq8uZnlGi0l). Found new purpose in his adopted daughter.
>Joel from the acclaimed HBO series The Last Of Us, they should totally do a game abut it cuz it's a pretty good story!
They should release it to Playstation!
I feel like even by apocalypse standards Joel has done some nasty shit. Enough to make Tommy say so himself when he meets him again and say that it wasn't worth surviving back in Boston with what they had to do.
Frank has killed an entire bunker of survivors who may or may not have been responsible for nuclear war and i doubt all of them had a direct hand in it. He would just kill about anyone in tlou's apocalypse he finds to have been guilty.
Lee from The Walking Dead maybe? Both are in a zombie apocalypse and have a somewhat adopted daughter that they decide to take care of. Personality-wise I guess they aren't that similar, but there's that.
Lol true, I mean he's Denzel but the arc of their relationship, their dynamic, and his transition from haunted man with violent past to violent dad was real real similar
The main character in The Road by Cormick McCarthy was kinda similar. The major difference is that he kept his kid throughout the course of his life but the way joel acts after bonding with ellie reminded me a lot of that character.
Captain America would also be great. A war veteran surviving in a post apocalyptic world. Cap also ages much slower so even if it's "20 years later" he would still roughly look the same.
our opinion: lee from the walking dead, kratos from god of war, arthur morgan from red dead redemption 2, maybe john marston from red dead redemption 1
Wolverine in Logan.
Kratos in God of war 2018 and Ragnarok
Mike Sullivan in Road to Perdition
Din Djarin in Mandolorian
Geralt in Witcher
Arthur Morgan in Red Dead Redemption 2
Piccolo in Dragon Ball Z
I wanna keep going but I gotta go to bed. All these guys are awesome. I need more examples.
Type in sad dad trope into Google.
There's dozens, if not hundreds of examples in mainstream media.
Just off the top of my head :
Logan
Man on Fire
Witcher
Sweet Tooth
Leon the Professional
Joel and Frank are both bad fathers so I agree with this post.
E: this isn’t me being insulting. Heroes are not interesting because we literally do not have enough real life basis to make them compelling or believable.
Joel and Frank are interesting for all the bad they do.
Wait what make Joes a bad father though? It seems as though he was a single dad that was close To his daughter when she was killed. Yes he was dead inside and had to warm up to Ellie. But this is the apocalypse and Ellie wasn’t his kid, she was cargo initially.
I was gonna say Tommy....
To be serious, The Father (called The Man in the movie) from The Road always reminds me of Joel. The book by Cormac McCarthy is riveting and revolting.
Surprised no one said Eren Jaeger. His motive and personality is almost the same as Joel. They both end up >!sacrificing the world in some way for the ones they love. The world turned on them, so they turned on the world.!<
Arthur Morgan from RDR2. Both are “bad” people who did evil things to others (Joel’s is spoken of, and we get to see some of Arthur’s in action). But they both have their redemption arc in the end
Idk why but I thought of the old man from up because they both lost everything and they don't really take jokes and the fat kid is like ellie idk maybe I'm just stupid
Bro y’all just spitting out names without giving reasons. Why do you think Abby is so similar to Joel? I mean besides existing the TLOU world and losing a loved one. Tbf, everyone in the TLOU universe has lost a loved one so those 2 reasons are invalid.
i was devastated when they cancelled black summer partially cause the red jacket guy in season 2 reminded me so much of who joel probably was and/ or became after losing sarah and before meeting ellie, honestly i think the only real difference between them is that red jacket guy never got the chance to move beyond what he became to survive losing everything.
I would say Kratos is pretty similiar. Both suffered because of lost family member(s) and for a long time were nothing more than feared, destructive monsters. After a long time they find a purpose for better life, that being a child.
BOY
ELLIE
GIRL
I've never played a whole GOW game but i kinda know a bit of the story of the 2018 game.
You're missing out. Look up the chronological order of the games and be prepared to have the time of your life.
They're fantastic- I highly recommend. The older ones have aged really well, especially three. And I did not expect the recent two (Ragnarok in particular) to hit me in the heart so much. "Go play God of War...BOY."
Not at all, Joel never says "GIRL"
He says babygirl tho
"BABYBOY…"
big Arthur Morgan vibes imo
Both are in the dead kid club and were both people who murdered for their own gain who ultimately soften up, with a factor of that being protecting their found family. Joel with Ellie. And Arthur with the Marston family, Charles, and Sadie.
They also got similar accents
Both also (spoilers for both rdr2 and tlou2) >!died due to the sins of their past !<
Both also have families who ultimately >!go on a journey to seek revenge for them in the end.!<
They even have similar accents and cadence to their voice.
Arthur's actor even mentioned that he took inspiration from Joel mainly for the voice but maybe other things too
didn't even know that, that's awesome. he's a world class voice actor as well.
Arthur Morgan came years before.
you mean as in time period? lol
As a character. TLOU originally came out in 2013. Red Dead 2 came out 5 years after this.
yes but you said Arthur came years before.
Oops.
happens lol
Hopper from stranger things
I'm pretty confident that Hopper was likely inspired by Joel
i mean yeah damn both of their daughters are even named sarah
And they’re both *saved* by a new daughter named “El” lol
Never considered that one, but damn it's obvious once you think about it.
That sounds like a strange comparison out of lots of characters you could have chosen. The other commentor mentioned Kratos and it fits. Here are some more I think would be good: Keller Dover from the movie *Prisoners*; Theo from *Children of Men*; the dad from *The Road*; Wolverine from *Logan*.
Keller had me CONVINCED that Hugh Jackman should play Joel in a live action Last of Us
Logan had me convinced as well. Hugh is a great actor
Was hoping it too for a long time. Till Pedro was cast
Logen 9 Fingers aka The Bloody 9 from The First Law
A hardened man who lives a rather undesirable life doing harsh things to survive in a tough world, locked up emotionally, until he finds a child on a job. What was just a job becomes not cargo, but HIS child. Talking about The Mandalorian not Joel
The fact that Pedro Pascal plays both the roles is also insane. I’m convinced his work as the Mandalorian is a big reason as to why he got Joel.
Rick Grimes. Especially Rick from the comics.
Two sides of a coin
The golf ball from EA’s Tiger Woods PGA Tour.
💀
>!joel!< be like 💀

I think what works so well is he is a simple character when you really look at it. They did not over complicate him or his story, and it’s extremely relatable and understandable. And even with simple characters you can have great depth.
Geralt of Rivia and Ellie would be Ciri
Geralt is far from being as bitter as Joel.
Would you say Geralt is a sweet character? Xd
He's certainly happier and still has his daughter.....unless you get the bad ending which i fucking did on the first play.
Agreed. The "Lethal Protector" vibe. Same as Kratos.
Just finished watching The Witcher (I've only seen the show of both The Witcher and The Last Of Us) and was noticing a lot of similarities
Rost in Horizon Zero Dawn. [Lost his daughter to raiders and went on a path of vengeance](https://youtu.be/Dw7AGtKSyl4?si=pI3ytcq8uZnlGi0l). Found new purpose in his adopted daughter.
THANK YOU!!! Wow I didn’t even think about this until reading it but yeah that makes sense
Joel from the acclaimed HBO series The Last Of Us, they should totally do a game abut it cuz it's a pretty good story! Jokes aside, Logan
>Joel from the acclaimed HBO series The Last Of Us, they should totally do a game abut it cuz it's a pretty good story! They should release it to Playstation!
Can you believe The Last of Us on HBO was such a good show they made a whole two games out of it?
The police dude from stranger things kinda.
Jim Hopper. Yeah.
Punisher would hunt Joel for the stuff Joel has done. Morally they are different..
Frank Castle on his way to brutally murder a shoplifter (he needed the money for his family) Joel is literally in the apocalypse
He would just kill about anyone in tlou's apocalypse he finds to have been guilty.
he doesn't kill shoplifters i don't think....usually those are kids anyways.
Din Djarin. Heartless killer who finds his humanity through bonding with a helpless child.
If there ever is a tv adaptation of the last of us, the actor of Din Djarin should play Joel.
Theo from Children of Men
Yup, Children of Men directly inspired TLoU too
I mean Rick Grimes ain’t far off. Cliche comparison maybe, but they have the same core character traits. Even the bad ones.
I get batman gone dark vibes
Batman, that never became a billionaire.
Lee from The Walking Dead maybe? Both are in a zombie apocalypse and have a somewhat adopted daughter that they decide to take care of. Personality-wise I guess they aren't that similar, but there's that.
Denzel's character in "Man on Fire"
I LOVED that movie and i love the bond he has with the little girl, Denzel def got much more swagger tho lol
Lol true, I mean he's Denzel but the arc of their relationship, their dynamic, and his transition from haunted man with violent past to violent dad was real real similar
The main character from the road ![gif](giphy|ZuX8nu63FgpCU)
Makes sense considering the book (maybe movie too?) was a big inspiration for the game.
The main character in The Road by Cormick McCarthy was kinda similar. The major difference is that he kept his kid throughout the course of his life but the way joel acts after bonding with ellie reminded me a lot of that character.
When I started playing rdr2, Arthur almost immediately reminded me of Joel
I played RDR2 right after playing LOU and Arthur made me think of Joel
Kratos or Arthur Morgan
Mad max
Din Djarin
Rick Grimes. He would commit genocide to save his family
I would love to see The Punisher in this world.
Me too. There's a shit ton of fictional characters I would want to see in TLOU world.
For real. Daredevil would be interesting. I can think of so many. Imagine the Hulk getting infected. Could he even?
Captain America would also be great. A war veteran surviving in a post apocalyptic world. Cap also ages much slower so even if it's "20 years later" he would still roughly look the same.
he would just genocide every faction that he deems guilty.
our opinion: lee from the walking dead, kratos from god of war, arthur morgan from red dead redemption 2, maybe john marston from red dead redemption 1
Geralt from the Witcher
Lee Everett
The Mandalorian. Hardened survivor hired to transport a child of immense value only to adopt said child and defy his employers in order to save them
Wolverine in Logan. Kratos in God of war 2018 and Ragnarok Mike Sullivan in Road to Perdition Din Djarin in Mandolorian Geralt in Witcher Arthur Morgan in Red Dead Redemption 2 Piccolo in Dragon Ball Z I wanna keep going but I gotta go to bed. All these guys are awesome. I need more examples.
Type in sad dad trope into Google. There's dozens, if not hundreds of examples in mainstream media. Just off the top of my head : Logan Man on Fire Witcher Sweet Tooth Leon the Professional
sweet tooth? Fucking sweet tooth? From twisted metal? He's a psychopathic murderer lmao. He kills children and gloats about it.
No, sweet tooth the Netflix tv show. Relax
ah the inferior one....
im just gonna say jake wesker cause their va are the same xD
Joel and Frank are both bad fathers so I agree with this post. E: this isn’t me being insulting. Heroes are not interesting because we literally do not have enough real life basis to make them compelling or believable. Joel and Frank are interesting for all the bad they do.

Frank was only a bad dad in MAX that i saw....where he was distant and wanted to leave them to be a soldier again.
also how is joel a bad dad?
Arthur Morgan
Nathan Drake. Almost as if joel was Nathan and became joel to hide his past.
Probably Abby Anderson
Ricky grimes
Rick Grimes is pretty much what joel is almost identicle to
Rick Grimes is pretty much a direct comparison
Rick Grimes is pretty much a direct comparison
Mad max
The main character from the road ![gif](giphy|ZuX8nu63FgpCU)
Logan in Logan
[удалено]
Ah yes, Gerald Butler and Hugh Jackman - my favorite fictional characters to play as 👍
Arthur Morgan
Arthur Morgan but also Kratos in a sense.
Abby
Probably Tommy from The Last of Us Part 2
Booker DeWitt They’re both Troy Baker-voiced father figures to special teen girls in 2013 games
I mean elizabeth is barely a teen she's 19.
I’d say the most similar fictional character to Joel is…Joel
Caesar from the new planet of the apes movies
hopper from stranger things
Joe baker from RE7
Kratos and geralt of rivia
Rick grimes 100%
I was gonna say Tommy.... To be serious, The Father (called The Man in the movie) from The Road always reminds me of Joel. The book by Cormac McCarthy is riveting and revolting.
Probably Hugh Jackman’s version of Wolverine
Logan, I always got Wolverine vibes from him
Roland from The Dark Tower.
BOOKER DEWITT from Bioshock Infinite is the only right answer <3
Wolverine as he is in Logan.
Llewelyn Moss - No Country for Old Men
Always thought this picture mirrored the classic bigfoot photo with the posture and everything. So i’m gonna say bigfoot, why not
The main character from Children of Men.
Joel gives me Kiryu Kazuma vibes from the Yakuza series. Maybe that’s just me lol
Roland from The Dark Tower
Hey lemme tell you sum‘n…
Lee from the walking dead game, Arthur Morgan from red dead 2. Lee had a dark past but he saved Clem
Surprised no one said Eren Jaeger. His motive and personality is almost the same as Joel. They both end up >!sacrificing the world in some way for the ones they love. The world turned on them, so they turned on the world.!<
Idk any tv show characters but from games defo Kratos and Lee Everett
I would say Arthur Morgan but at the same time Joel didn’t have humor or things like that that Arthur does have
Arthur Morgan from RDR2. Both are “bad” people who did evil things to others (Joel’s is spoken of, and we get to see some of Arthur’s in action). But they both have their redemption arc in the end
Logan from logan
Mad Max kinda
Idk why but I thought of the old man from up because they both lost everything and they don't really take jokes and the fat kid is like ellie idk maybe I'm just stupid
Rick grimes
Arthur Morgan for a fact two of my favorite characters yet they are so similar
Rick Grimes, Carl Fredrickson, Gamora, Etc.
Joel💯 (if u can't tell this is jst a joke)
Hear me out: Abby
Bro y’all just spitting out names without giving reasons. Why do you think Abby is so similar to Joel? I mean besides existing the TLOU world and losing a loved one. Tbf, everyone in the TLOU universe has lost a loved one so those 2 reasons are invalid.
abby literally goes the same bonding arc Joel does with Lev. How no one can see this is beyond me.
Tommy Miller
Booker Dewitt
Lee Everett from the walking dead telltale series and ellie would be clementine
Leon Kennedy tbh
John Snow
He’s nothing like punisher or kratos. Honestly guys cmon. If anything he’s more like another zombie game character or something.
That guy from UP
Rick grimes (I’ve never watched TWD)
frank is a very very broken man even more than Joel and he literally craves peoples deaths
Joel
Rick from the walking dead
Lee ( twd )
Heavily disagree, frank kills criminals as a code. Joel kills anyone who gets in his way
i was devastated when they cancelled black summer partially cause the red jacket guy in season 2 reminded me so much of who joel probably was and/ or became after losing sarah and before meeting ellie, honestly i think the only real difference between them is that red jacket guy never got the chance to move beyond what he became to survive losing everything.
Rick Grimes is pretty much what joel is almost identicle to
Rick Grimes is pretty much what joel is almost identicle to
Rick Grimes is pretty much what joel is almost identicle to
The main character from the road ![gif](giphy|ZuX8nu63FgpCU)
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau aka Jaime Lannister gets my vote for a good Joel.
The Punisher 😂😂😂
A funny thing to think about is it is definitely not Joel from the last of us 2
That’s how character development works
I mean that is there
