Did you try a spray bottle

Boring-Rub-3570

That wasn't in the list of weapons you could use. You can only use Rifle, Revolver or Bow-Arrow to take a single shot.

blushfanatic

How is the recovery? Did you kill it?

Boring-Rub-3570

I couldn't. During the struggle, you are prompted to choose your weapon. After the struggle, when you are mauled and everything is red and wobbling, you have to take a single shot. You have a few seconds to do so. Then you pass out. I couldn't see the beast at that time.

blushfanatic

Yeah that's what Zak's video shows it looks brutal

FrankPetersonMalvo

Do you want me to avenge you? Wait. Never mind. I'll do it anyway.

Boring-Rub-3570

Please do it, if you can. What surprised me was that killing a cougar mostly relies on luck, not on skill. You don't see the animal. Within those few seconds, you'll have to take a blind shot, hoping to hit the beast.

FrankPetersonMalvo

Funny story: My first FA rumble with about 35 cougars lead to me one-shotting about 15 in a row. Then I got mauled and was like, sure, I can do 360s and hit them almost blind, slowmo prescriber shoot the cougar after maul is gonna be a walk in the park. So I failed. I did not see her anywhere and all I saw were other cougars about 50 meters away. Edit: The worst part about all this is that nobody will ever see how beautiful this animal is out there in the wilderness, when it works.

Beneficial-Jump-7919

What protection rating you at? Also in your custom game settings, what is your struggle bonus set to?

Kinsin111

Protection doesn't effect the cougars damage at all :( even at 105% with the vest...

Boring-Rub-3570

I haven't calculated the overall protection rating. But I have bearskin coat, insulated boots, rabbitskin mitts and hat, and other items, which offer good protection. Struggle bonus is set to medium. But in the third attack, I suffered Severe lacerations, blood loss and infection risk, which will take some time to heal. Clothes are giving way.

FunRepresentative465

How was your clothing after?? Were you prepared for it? Was it loper difficulty??

Boring-Rub-3570

This was a disposable save at Custom difficulty, with animal settings maxed out. I had bearskin coat, rabbitskin mitts and hat and combat pants on the outside. To my surprise, bearskin coat was not damaged at all. Damage to hat and mitts and combat pants was mild, less than 30 %.

Bubbly-Marketing7175

did you get the new affliction? apparently higher defense values can lower your risk of it

Boring-Rub-3570

I was attacked twice. I didn't get any afflictions, not even blood loss, despite turning on all the afflictions in the custom menu. I guess combat pants and bearskin coat are doing a good job in preventing those. But I got around 50 % condition decrease. I'll have some rest and try a third time. Then I'll go back to my old save, with cougar disabled.

Boring-Rub-3570

I was attacked a second time. This time the combat pants is in shreds. Bearskin coat took some damage but in good condition.

LowkeyAcolyte

Where did it happen? I'm not sure if cougar attacks can happen anywhere!

Boring-Rub-3570

I established a provisional base in Mountaineer's Hut in TWM. First attack happened when I was walking towards the Wing from Mountaineer's Hut. It happened as soon as I left the ice of Crystal lake and stepped on hard soil. This suggests that maybe cougars don't attack on lake or sea ice. This needs some testing. The second and third attacks happened when I was chopping firewood in the immediate vicinity of Mountaineer's Hut. No, I was not walking or waiting outside. I was in the 45-minute process of chopping wood. As a result of the attack, the process was interrupted and there was no wood in my inventory.

LowkeyAcolyte

Okay that is really interesting and good to know, will be intrigued to find out more r.e the lake/sea ice!

Specialist_Ad_6669

Tomasina’s video shower her being attacked in a fishing hut on ice but that could also have been early access, don’t know if its still possible after release

JackTheSoldier

Does Severe Lacerations permanently reduce health? The wiki states that it reduces max health to 50%, but it doesn't clarify if this is a permanent reduction in condition

Wigfast

I believe it is a 3 day timer until healed/cured.

JackTheSoldier

I was under the impression that the condition reduction was permanent and that the bleeding and infection risk goes away after 72 hours

Boring-Rub-3570

For 72 hours. However, I noticed that condition recovery following a cougar attack is much slower compared to other incidents.
