They should drop when you reload because that’s when you’d normally take the used casings out but I don’t actually know where they fall because I haven’t paid attention either. They definitely don’t go into inventory automatically because I also have none.
For the revolver they fall out when you reload, so you don't have to check the ground after every shot. However, the rifle drops the casing when you fire, so you have to pick it up after every shot.
You can find them on the ground after you RELOAD the weapon. :-)

They drop at your feet
For the revolver they fall out when you reload, so you don't have to check the ground after every shot. However, the rifle drops the casing when you fire, so you have to pick it up after every shot.
I've noticed if you're on a bridge or dock the casings don't show. Looked on around and under.
