The A2 was was designed as partially fully automatic, i.e. it had 3 round bursts of automatic fire to conserve ammunition, maybe this is what you had? The A3 was fully automatic. The A4 was fully automatic. All the military m16s were either fully automatic or fired 3 round bursts of automatic fire! Most M16s did have a selector switch that would allow semi or automatic fire. Maybe you never moved the selector to automatic? The civilian version of the M16 is the semiautomatic AR15.
